He added that: “A pleasing trend is evident in the increasing demand by consumers for access to their personal credit records. There were 65,082 free credit reports issued for the December 2009 quarter and consumers had to pay for 10,935 credit reports. Consumers lodged 10,573 disputes on information held on their credit records, a 1.7% increase quarteron-quarter and 17.2% increase year-on-year. The demand for access to personal credit records is likely to be sustained as credit bureaus and the National Credit Regulator continue to implement campaigns encouraging consumers to review and manage their credit information”. Based upon the NCR’s statistics, the current position in debt counselling is as follows: 1,642 debt counsellors are registered with, the NCR;160,000 consumers have applied for debt counselling since the implementation of the NCA, with an average of 7,500 new applications being received per month; There has been a significant increase in the monthly payments by consumers under debt counselling over the last six months, from R11,05 million in June 2008 to R167.9 million for the month of March 2010. When you are no longer able to pay your monthly instalments on your car or house or is unable to pay all your accounts a visit to a registered debt counsellor may be the answer. The sooner the better - before any legal action is taken against you. This may see that even though you may be granted a period of lower or even no payment by a court, you will not lose your property. It is however necessary that you are still employed and that you and your debt counsellor seek the best option suitable for your specific needs. You have to be honest with the counsellor and provide them with all the proper documentation needed. A debt counsellor will help set up a plan for repayment, talk to the bank and other institutions that must be paid and could through a court order help to set-up a re-payment plan for the client that will still allow for living expenses and help ensure that items such a car or house cannot simply be ‘taken back’. New uniformsbring joyThe Tubatse sub-district of Department of Health and SocialDevelopment in the Sekhukhune district brought joy to a largenumber of needy children in the sub-district when they handedschool uniforms to them as part of the Limpopo ProvincialGovernment’s child protection campaign.

The campaign kicked off at Leboeng’s community servicecentre on Tuesday where officials of the Department of Healthand Social Development, community leaders, learners, parentsand teachers gathered for the handing over ceremony.

A number of speakers addressed guests, explaining exactlyhow the provision of school uniforms ties in with child protection.

Speakers explained that providing uniforms to learners frompoor families, serves as encouragement to study hard and performwell so that the poverty chain may be broken by a good education. It also discourages learners from poor backgrounds to go to thestreet, but rather stay in school to be educated. Good results alsomake learners more eligible to qualify for bursaries.

The issue of the 2010 Fifa Soccer World Cup also receivedattention from the speakers, with the Police warning againsthuman trafficking, while educators warned learners to keepstuduing, irrespective of the massive sports tournament thatawaits the country.

Other issues that were highlighted included the role ofeducation in fighting the HIV/Aidspandemic, warnings against the misuse ofchild support and foster care grants, andthe importance of the social responsibilityof the ciommunity to ensure that childrenare educated in a pretective environmentand do not become involved in crime. Thehanding over of the new uniforms washighlighted by much song and dance whena number of children emerged with theirnew clothes.

Two mineworkers lost their lives last week Wednesday night whilst two others were admitted in hospital at theTweefontein shaft of Eastern Chrome Mines.

These came just a few hours after three miners had lost their lives at Buffelsfontein mine in Matlosana. TheNational Union of Mineworkers says the mine workers at Eastern Chrome died after workers were ordered to blasteven though the mine was not cleared. These resulted in rocks falling over other workers who were still underground.

“The accident could have been avoided. It is pure negligence on the part of the mining company” says GeorgeLedoaba, the NUM ‘s Organiser in the North-East Region. NUM says it is highly perturbed by the resurgence ofmining accidents. “We are very disturbed about these and we call on the Mineral Resources Department to strengthenits arm. It is true that old habits die hard” says Frans Baleni, the NUM General Secretary.

Over two thousand mineworkers downed tools last week Friday after the incident to observe a day of mourning forthe two miners who died. The operations involved are Lannex, Tweefontein and Doornbosch. “We are mourning. Wewill mourn whenever there is a fatality in our mines” said Ledoaba.

NUM appeals to all its members to continue to observe a day of mourning whenever a mine worker loses his life inthe mining industry.

Meanwhile Samancor Chrome stated in a media release last week “It is with deep regret that Samancor Chrome reports anincident at its Eastern Chrome Mines, which has resulted in two fatalities.

The company extends its sincerest condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of the deceased and will endeavour to assistthem in any way possible.

An investigation is currently under way together with members of the DMR and Union representatives in an attempt to fully understandthe circumstances leading to this tragic incident.

Samancor Chrome is committed to achieving a culture of ZERO HARM at all our operations and the results of the investigation into theincident will be used to further strengthen our safety initiatives where appropriate in order to prevent a reoccurrence.”

Samancor supplies in excess of 50 per cent of worldwide charge chrome demand. It says over 80 per cent of itschrome ore output is consumed in the production of ferrochrome in South Africa and some 85 per cent of chrome alloyproduction is exported to stainless steel producers globally.

Ardwick issue still not resolvedThe residents of Mokutung village is up inarms over a farm they say belong to them, but they receive no benefit from it. Theissue, previously reported on in PlatinumGazette, comes a long time.

Residents say the bought the farm, situated across the Shoe Caves next to theR36 between Ohrigstad and StrydomTunnel and left it in the care of acommittee elected by the community. Thecommittee members did not do their workand they were subsequently removed bythe community according to the

constitution of the association formed totake custody of the farm called Ardwick. Anew committee was elected and theystarted to develop the land with the help ofa closed corporation formed.

The problem now, according to thepeople of Mokutung, is that the committeedoes not give any benefit derived from thefarm through to them and after more thanone meeting, stubbornly refuse torelinguish controll of the land, assets andproperty on it. According to the people ofMokutung the committee says an

agreement exists between the association, comprised of the people of Mokutung, andthe closed corporation, of which some of thecommittee are members and that theycannot be forced to abandon their positionsat this stage as the agreement with theclosed corporation is still valid andongoing.

The people of mokutung, who met againwith the closed corporation’s members onthe land last week, say the contract, ofwhich they have a copy, are not valid thereare sious flaws in it, such as empty spaces

with nothing filled in. The date on signingalso does not appear on their copy of thecontract they dispute, while they also put aquestion mark behind some of thesignatures on the copy.

They resorted to go and see a legal firmwho reportedly required a large deposit.“We do not have that kind of money. We donot know what to do. The Department ofAgriculture and Land Affairs also say thatit is our internal problems, they cannotsolve it for us. Al what we can say, is thatthe situation is very tense...”

10 NEWS 14 MAY 2010

Can you see a difference inLast week Supt. Victor Lekwadu of theGreater Tubatse Municipality’s TrafficDepartment promised that they will be‘cleaning up this town’.They were to focus on problem areas, andbe strict with those who do not obey trafficrules. Some of the problems highlightedwere the illegal U-turns, drivers whoignore red lights and stop streets as well aspedestrians crossing at dangerous places.Taxi’s that stop anywhere, any time wasanother problem. We asked readers if they’ve seen theDepartment’s efforts this week. Were theymore visible? Have this week made anydifference as to how residents experiencetraffic law enforcement and where shouldthe traffic cops focus more?

Mr Nickey Mogale said: “No, this town isa mess. They have to put more trafficpeople”.

Mr Leonard Nkosi said: “No, we needmore traffic cops. The taxi drivers thatjust stop is a problem. A few weeks ago Ihad an accident when a taxi overtook onthe solid line. We need more people tooverlook this place and take actionbecause accidents happen in front ofthem and they do nothing”.

Mr Ntowane Marobane said: “There is anorm and people will take a while tochange their habits unless there are copseverywhere, all the time. How will youenforce the law upon the pedestrians? Itis difficult”.

Me. Anja van der Westhuizen sê: “Ek hethulle meer sien rondry. Daar by KFC isdie deel wat baie aandag nodig het.”By haar is Ané en JC.

Mnr. Divan Botha sê: “Daar is nog nie ‘nverandering nie. Hulle moet veral by diekruising by Spar en die rank aandaggee”.

Mr S. Patel said: “They must do the rightthing and take action. There is nodifference in town. The taxis that stopanywhere is a problem. They must takethem on”.

Mnr.

Mr Johannes Mathabatha said: “It is stillthe same. If there are more traffic officersat the old Score it might make adifference. They must focus there”.

Andries Human sê: “Hulle is ‘n bietjiemeer sigbaar, maar die robotte is nogal ‘nissue. Hulle moet meer daar fokus”. Byhom is Marinel.

Mr KuzivaMyamurowa andhis wife, Memorysaid: “Themotorists don’tstop at the redlights - especiallyat night.Pedestrians walkas they please. They must beforced to use thedesignatedcrossing points toavoid accidents. We’ve seen thetraffic cops more, they were enforcingthe law wheresomeone wasmaking an illegal u-turn”.

Mr EL Mashile said: “The unnecessaryovertaking and illegal u-turns areproblems. There is no difference in townyet”.

Mnr. Bokka de Klerk sê: “Nee, hulle hetnie ‘n verskil gemaak nie. Hulle moet kykby Leopard’s Bush se stopstraat en by dierobot by die afdraai na Marone Sentrumhoe die mense ry”.

Mr Harrison Kgwetiane said: “They’ve notdone enough yet. They must be at everyT-junction and crossing - especially inthe afternoons and on the weekends”.
