Parliamentis comingThe National Council of Provinces (NCOP), a house of Parliamentthat represents provinces at National Level, held a one day publicmeeting last Saturday at the FET College in Praktiseer.

The meeting solicited inputs from community members that willinfluence the agenda for public hearings during the NCOP’sflagship programme of Taking Parliament to the People on 22-26March 2010 in the Greater Tubastse Municipality.

The meeting provided an opportunity for the people, directly andthrough their public representatives, to raise issues they wouldlike to bring to the attention of the NCOP. In return, the NCOPwill now facilitate the processing of the issues by the three spheresof government.

The meeting will enable the NCOP to ensure that the Marchprogramme responds to the expressed needs of the people. The hallat the FET College in Praktiseer was p[acked on Saturday and themeeting was also attended by provincial governmentrepresentatives, district government representatives and thepolitical office bearers and officials of the greater TubatseMunicipality.

Despite the searing heat in the hall (with large discomfortsuffered by the visitors from Cape Town) people of the area stoodtheir ground, telling the NCOP advance team eaxactly what theythink of mostly service delivery in the area and what they expectgovernment to do about it.

Representatives of the all the government spheres attended the meeting with the two mayors,Cllr Mogobo David Magabe of the Sekhukhune District Municipality and Cllr Ralepane Mamekoa ofGreater Tubatse Municipality (photograph right) listening attentively to the proceedings.

Kutullo havewater again

Residents of Kutullo village, which forms part of Ga-Malekane (Ward 27) arehappy again (sort of) as their problems with water provision has been solved.

They staged a peaceful march on 12 January when they went to their wardcouncillor’s house to complain about the fact that the pump supplying water totheir village, was defective for almost a year now.

The villagers, although peaceful, was cross because they said they werepromised a lot of things before the elections last year, and they now have to fetchwater form the Tubatse/Steelpoort river. The allege that this water iscontaminated with all sorts of stuff since construction of the nearby De Hoop Damstarted, making people ill.

The village is situated between the De Hoop construction site and the JaneFurse turn-off on the R555 towards Steelpoort.

They are glad the water problem is now sorted out, say the people of Kutullo, but now they have another problem. They don’t have electricity ...

Sit- ins at TwoRivers andBokoniterminated

JThe two-day “unprotected illegal” underground sit-in strike at Two Rivers platinummine, which was initially said to be a hostage drama, has ended last week Friday.A separate underground mineworker sit-in at the Bokoni platinum mine also came to ahalt.

Both sit-ins ended after the serving of court interdicts.African Rainbow Minerals own Two Rivers in a joint venture with Impala Platinum,

while Anooraq owns the Bokoni (previously Lebowa) mine.ARM said in a media release that all striking employees had returned to the surface

on Thursday night after a court interdict had been served on them.A demand for additional overtime pay for public holidays worked during the

Christmas break was the reason why 55 Two Rivers nightshift employees staged theillegal underground sit-in strike, which had endured for two days.

ARM said that the demand was contrary to a pay agreement that had been signedbetween Two Rivers management and the unions.

The 100-plus Bokoni sit-in strike was also over end-year bonus pay, as well as the firingof a manager accused of being racist, National Union of Mineworkers spokespersonLesiba Seshoka said.

The serving of a court interdict also resulted in the Bokoni workers agreeing tosurface, after they had been refusing to do so since Tuesday, despite pleas from adelegation that included traditional leaders.

Can the sound of theA team of researchers from the PretoriaUniversity’s communication pathologydepartment researched the risk for hearingloss through the sound of the vuvuzela. The team found that a premier soccerleague match attended by 30 000 fans withvuvuzelas will measure at 140dB(decibels).The team’s Dr de Wet said that he wouldnot recommend that anyone, even whenwearing ear plugs should be exposed tomore than 137dB.According to the South AfricanOccupational Health and Safety Act,employees and visitors to companies can beexposed to 85dB for eight hours before theymust be given hearing protection or stepsbe taken to reduce the noise levels. It isrecommended that a person exposed tomore than 100dB a day should not beexposed to the noise for more than 15minutes.The research was done with soccer fanswearing sound exposure metres to analyzethe exposure and frequency spectrum ofthe vuvuzela. The lowest recorded decibels in a stadiummeasured in at 113dB with 140dB beingthe peak. After a heated debate the vuvuzela willnow be allowed at games during the SoccerWorld Cup later this year. Local organisingcommittee chairman, Mr Danny Jordaan isalso encouraging local fans to use theinstrument as a welcoming, friendly one atthe matches. We asked readers whether they think thesound of the vuvuzela can cause damage totheir hearing and if they loved or hated thesound.

Mr Brown Letageng said: “The vuvuzela isan African rhythm. We’ve grown up withit. It cannot cause damage. We areaddicted to it.”

Mr figo Maphalla said: “They just want toget rid of the vuvuzela. I like the sound”.

Me. Gerda Jansen van Nieuwenhuizen sê:“Dit is waar dat dit skade veroorsaak. Dis‘n irriterende geluid”.
