Schools opened on Wednesday and the first

timers (no longer grade ones - they already

know the drill) flocked to schools in the area

with their stiff new clothes and sometimeswith just a liitle bit of apprehension. Schools

the newspaper visited yesterday had no

    problems accommodating those who pre-

registered and plans were quickly made for

those who did not. The little ones, adaptable

as the are, quicly assimilated into their new

environments. One boy was accompanied by

his dog Monday (because we got it on a

De Hoop Dam is filling upDe Hoop Dams visible level had been rising quicklyover the past few weeks after heavy rainfall in thecatchment area. The dam is due to be officially

opened soon. (Openings had been postponed morethan once in 2013).A request for information on water levels and otherquestions regarding the future of the dam had not

received a response from the Department of Water

Affairs by the time of going to press. The dam is notyet listed on the official lists with the status of damsby the Department. The last official feedback status

the dams level at 6%, but much rain has fallen afterthat.Seeing the water level rise and being able to view thedam from the R555 is at the moment as good as

    residents will get.

Storm damageOn Monday this week a heavy wind and rainstorm flattened hawkerstalls and damaged business signage. Lucky the hawkers wonthave to wait too long for properly constructed stalls asthe tender

process for its construction is underway.

    4 NEWS 17 JANUARY2014

Ms Nelly Mogowane said: Yes, they will beable to keep the promise to get rid of

corruption. We have come a long way with

the ANC and that is why I believe it.

Mr Likon Makofane said: No, they wont beable to do that. South Africa is too corrupt. No party will be able to root out corruption.

Mr Jan Mphogo said: No they wont be able

to keep that promise. They are electedthrough corruption. No organisation will beable to do away with corruption. Just look atthe EFF, they want to compete, but there arestill court cases against some of them.Corruption is in the blood of politicians.

Mr Sam Molapo said: They have beenpromising that since 1994. Come elections

they will promise anything. They can do a bit

of what they promise, but definitely not all ofit. Maybe we can look at the EFF and the DAto root out corruption. They must fight to be

    tops.

Me Liezel Venter s: Nee, ek dink glad niehulle sal by daardie belofte kan hou nie.

Mnr.

Mr James Zwane said: That is not a goodpromise. Maybe another party will do better.Well never get another person like Mandela.

Mr Collen Mahlo and Mr Kgaogelo Mpethi said: No, the ANC is a big organisation so theywont get rid of corruption. We think corruption is just a part of South Africa, nobody can takeit back.

Ms Karabo Mphogo said: I believe itbecause I trust the ANC.

2014 is the year of general elections and

political parties are scrambling to ensure asmany votes as possible.

Each party is in the process of launching theirmanifesto that contains the promises they maketo the people. Last week in Mbombela the ANClaunched their election manifesto. It contains

various promises, but also touch on the issueof corruption.

President Jacob Zuma told the crowd at the

launch that the party will act againstgovernment officials found guilty of corruptionby a court of law. He added that they will aim toestablish a tender adjudication board to try andcurb corruption when it comes to awardingtenders.

According to the organisation CorruptionWatch, the public in South Africa has becomeincreasingly intolerant of corruption. They

warned that while anti-corruption actions takenby the Department of Public Service iscommendable, it is being countered by

continued impunity of those who are politicallyand financially powerful.Anti-corruption actions has been part of electionpromises since 1994 when the ANC said: The

ANC will encourage private citizens to use theindependent public protector to investigate

corruption, dishonesty or violation of rules ofconduct on the part of government officials -those found guilty will be dealt with.We asked readers if they think this anti-corruption promise of last week is one the ANCwill be able to keep and whether they think anyparty in South Africa has the ability to root out

    corruption.

    Do you believe in anti-corruption

Mr Ben Madigage said: They tried but

theyve failed. They wont fix it the next timearound. They just keep on promising. Nopolitical party will be able to do it. Everyone is

just promising, but it is not easy to reducecorruption. With him is Kedibone.

Mr MW Mathebula said: It is a promisetheyll keep. It is the only party who will beable to do that. Theyve recognised that therewas corruption before they came into power

and that they will have to fight it when theystarted as the ruling party. We mustremember to be factual. Dont just say there

is corruption. Report those who are corruptand provide the evidence. We must come upwith facts to help the state.

Mr Fidel Dube and Mr Jabulani Mkhondo said: No, it is not a promise the ANC will be able to

keep. You cannot say you will drop the rate of corruption. We heard Zuma tell the people ofKanyamazane that he will slaughter cows for them if they vote for him. What promise is that? That will not bring a difference to this country. No, we are not sure that any party will be ableto lower corruption, but maybe give them a chance and see what they can do.

Ms Tryphosa Malahlela said: No, they wontbe able to root out corruption. It is part of thesystem. We are used to them promising usbut not delivering.

Mnr. Danil Khotle s: Hulle sal nie daardiebelofte hou nie.

Daar is

Dis so in diepolitiek, in industrie, dis oral.

Regs: Me. Carien Purcell s: Het hulle dit alooit gedoen? As hulle track recordwys dathulle korrupsie kan uitroei, by all means, dan

ondersteun ek daardie belofte. Dalk as almal saamstaan.

Mr Saul Maphosa said: Ja, I believe it100%. Theyve been in power long and haveseen what is wrong and what is right.

Opposition is needed to put pressure on theruling party, but Im not sure if another partywill be able to root out corruption.

    election promises political parties make?
