On 02 December 2009 Modikwa Platinum Mine reached a remarkable safety milestonein achieving 6 Million Fatality Free Shifts.

It is not many mines, which in their history can achieve this remarkableachievement, and Modikwa has joined an elite band of a few who have excelled in theirsafety achievements. According to the mine the beginning of this success story was backin 2006 when Modikwa achieved the fist million fatality free shifts in its history.However, on 13th April 2006 an employee tragically died on duty, but, seven monthslater, on the 26th November 2006 the start of the current series of consecutive millionshift achievements at Modikwa continued with recording the first million fatality free.

The second million followed in July 2007, the third in February 2008, the fourth inAugust 2008, and the fifth in March 2009. This remarkable achievement has resulted inthe mine being awarded the Mine Health and Safety Council and the Department ofMineral Resources awards six times, and in September 2009 an industry award forexcellence. It took the mine almost 9months to achieve its sixth millionconsecutive fatality free shifts andequates to 44 months without a fatalinjury for the mine.

“We are truly setting a benchmarkfor the platinum mining industry! Onlyour employees’ and contractors’unconditional commitment to our totalcompliance to safety strategies, and thededication shown by them towards theelimination of unsafe acts andconditions has made this possible”, saidMr. Sean O’Connor, Business Leader ofthe Mine. He further stated thatModikwa’s core ideology “Caring for ourpeople” coupled to a zero mindsettowards injuries, prevention of re-occurrence of injuries, and set safetystandards and rules is the foundationthat is taking Modikwa to the forefrontin injury prevention. The mine’s goal isto prevent not only fatalities but alsoinjuries as a whole.

This exceptional achievement of 6million fatality free shifts wascelebrated with a road show by theleadership of the mine visiting thedifferent business areas, personallycongratulating and thanking everyemployee for their contribution.

Burgersfort Police Station went big this week when they actively launched the 16 Days ofActivism against Woman and Child Abuse at the morone Centre in Burgersfort onWednesday.

Tents were pitched on the parking area of the centre where people were made awareof this serious problem in society. Policeman and other servants of state, together withmembers of the public and the youth participated in a 5 km fun run and walk. Apun theparticipants arrival at the finising point at the Morone Centre, the tents were filling upwith members of the public , while a Police band from Polokwane was merrily playingaway under one of the tents. This band proved to be hugely popular and entertained allpresent, those under the tents as well as those preferring the shadows of the nearbytrees.

The municipality also took active part in the proceedings and the Mayor of GreaterTubatse Municipality, Cllr Ralepane Mamekoa did his part in addressing the crowd onthe issue. Several senior police officers from Polokwane also visited to give impetus totheir local colleagues’ efforts and various structures, such as the community policingforums did their part to make the campaign a succes.

There was a surprise for the almost 200 HIV Aids orphans and their foster mothers atDriekop on World Aids Day when Thorburn Security Solutions treated them differently thanprevious years – the early Christmas gift this year included an Aids Day T-shirt from thecompany and an environmentally friendly soccer bal.

The foster mothers this year also received 100 kg of maize and they also shared in theT-shirts that were available.

Ellence Monyela, Steelpoort based Operational Manager for the Eastern Limboperations of Thorburn, rightfully pointed out that the weak economy in 2008/2009 causedby the recession influenced support to the People Against the Spread of HIV Aids andStarvation (PASAS) in Driekop. However the proceeds from the company’s annual charitygholf day at the Tubatse Chrome Golf Club in March 2009 relaxed a bit of the financialburden and allowed for more than in previous years. Monthly maize donations continuedand will continue in 2010, Monyela confirmed. There will also be a Charity Golf Day in March2010.

The idea to “adopt PASAS” became a reality in 2007 in a joint initiative from ModikwaPlatinum Mine Protection Services who introduced Thorburn management to PASAS. In hisaddress on behalf of the Modikwa Platinum Mine management, Protection Services LeaderDarren McDonald praised the HIV Aids counsellors at PASAS for their efforts and workamongst the orphans and foster parents and he also committed Modikwa to provide someform of support to PASAS.

For many a HIV orphan this was an early Christmas. The challenge for the children is tofind enough plastic bags to fill the soccer ball as the ball can only be used when filled withplastic.

ASA Metals - Know your statusASA Metals focussed on getting to know your HIV status on World Aids Day on Tuesday, 1December. The Aurum Institute and Burgersfort clinic was on hand to help employees get tested andproperly counselled.At an official function the COO, Mr Herman Smith encouraged the employees to participate and getto know their status. He also applauded them for the low rate of HIV positive prevalence amongstthem. According to Smith only 6% of those employees tested were tested HIV positive while theaverage prevalence in South Africa is around 20%. He praised them for taking care of themselves andtheir loved ones and in turn being a strong workforce for the company. When employees get testedthe results remain confidential. The only figures released to management is an amount that testedpositive and an amount that tested negative.Peer educators, home-based caregivers and a motivational speaker also formed part of the day’sprogramme. The ASA Metals’ choir entertained the audience with items between the variousspeakers.

A large number of villagers in Dresden outside Burgersfort foundthemselves stranded on Tuesday when the river in the village floodedbecause of the rain and people could only cross after a few hours. Accordingto some villagers the pipes seen on the photograph was meant to be part ofthe construction of a low water bridge, but the project was never completed.

Miss Spring 2009winners collectgifts for needyMs Magda Reyneke and the Miss Spring 2009 winners are collecting Christmasgifts to distribute to various home-based care centres. From there it will beredistributed to Aids orphans and needy children this Christmas.

“We are challenging all businesses to join forces with us,” Ms Reyneke said.They are aiming to collect 50 small gifts from each business. “Fifty might

sound like a lot, but the idea is not give expensive gifts. It is to give a child thejoy of opening a present and even if it is a chocolate wrapped in Christmas giftwrapping it will bring joy,” she explained.

Some of the items on the list for collection include sweets such as chocolates,toiletries such as a bar of soap, linensuch as face cloths or even a smallblanket.

The finalists will visit the variousareas with centres taking care of aidsorphans and hand out the gifts beforeChristmas.

This week the world once again took stockof how the HIV/Aids pandemic is affectingvarious countries and what can be done tohelp prevent the spread of HIV/Aids.One of the major messages was thateveryone should know their HIV status.According to various sources statistics inSouth Africa remains shocking.An increase in the prevalance amongstpeople with a higher income and studentswere some of the statistics released.It is estimated that 10% of people in thehigher income group are now testing HIVpositive compared to only 8.5% in 2005.Some laboratories also found that up to40% of new HIV positive tests are fromwhite people. Especially universitystudents who do not take the pandemicseriously are vulnerable.According to a report by the BBC SouthAfrica has the world’s largest anti-retroviral (ARV) programme. This will beexpanded even further after presidentJacob Zuma announced that all babiesyounger than one year with HIV willreceive ARV treatment.The infection rate amongst pregnantwomen increased from 0,7% in 1990 to2,3% in 2008. Most of these women arebetween the ages of 20 and 39 years.To boost the programmes even further theUnited States has given 120 million dollarsto help South Africa buy more ARVs.Some of the warnings that were soundedthis week was of the high mortality ratedue to the infection and diseases such asTB. In 2007 an estimated 500 000thousand people had been living with TB.It is feared that by 2015 up to 5.7 millionchildren could have lost one or both oftheir parents due to Aids. Currently SouthAfrica has 1.4 million Aids orphans.45% on new infections during 2008 camefrom girls in the age group between 15 and24 years of age. This is despite theirincreased knowledge of HIV and how toprevent it.In a nation of about 50 million people 5.7million people are infected with HIV. Eachyear 59 000 babies are born with HIV.In South Africa 35% of the sick leave takenby employees is due to HIV/Aids and TBand 57% of all deaths of children under 5are due to HIV/Aids and related diseases.The worst hit provinces are Kwa-ZuluNatal, Mpumalanga, Free State and theNorth West.This week we asked readers whether theybelieved the HIV problem is truly as big asshown in the media and if the statisticsgiven can be true? Tubatse Gunners tops of 16 teamsTubatse Gunners took first place in Xstrata Lion Ferrochrome’s tournament for localteams. A total of 16 teams competed for the top position.They won their game with one goal against Liverpool on Sunday, 29 November.The team also won themselves a full soccer kit including soccer boots, three soccerballs, shin guards, a whistle, soccer jerseys and R15 000 in cash. All the top teamsreceived various soccer kit items. Liverpool took home R10 000 for their second place.Third place was taken by Juventas and fourth by Masokolare. The cash prize for thirdplace was R5 000 and the cash prize for fourth place was R4 000.Juventas won 4-1 to Masokolare on Sunday. The matches were played at the TubatseGunners home ground in Longtill.

Masokolareplayed in thegreen andwhite and AllStars in theblue andwhite.Masokolaremade it to thesemi-finals ofthetournament.
