(NAPS)—Tires are the only thing betweenyou and the road, so it’s imperative motoristsstay on top of tire maintenance. Proper tiremaintenance is important all year, but espe-cially in the summer months as the tempera-ture starts heating up and the frequency of tireblowouts increases.

Improper tire care contributes to 195 fatal-ities and 6,300 injuries each year, accordingto the National Highway Traffic SafetyAdministration. The agency also estimates thatabout 11,000 tire-related crashes occur annu-ally. Simply checking your tire pressure canhelp you and your passengers stay safe dur-ing your next summer journey.

To get the most from your tires this summer,here are five maintenance tips from theworld’s largest independent tire and wheelretailer—Discount Tire:

1. Get Pressure Right— Low tire pressurecan decrease fuel economy. Tires may lose upto one pound PSI (per square inch) of air pres-sure per month. The specific inflation pressurenumber may be found on the vehicle placardlocated inside the driver’s door. Don’t forgetthose trailer tires. Checking the tire pressurefor boat, travel and utility trailers is as impor-tant as your car or truck.

2. Don’t Overload—Overloading yourvehicle or trailer decreases fuel economy dueto increased cargo weight. Handling, controland braking are also negatively impacted.

3. Rotate Before You Go—Regular rotationhelps achieve uniform tire wear and improvesroad performance. Tires rotated every 5,000

miles have longer life and will help maximizeyour tire investment.

4. Straighten Up—Proper wheel alignmentprovides safe, predictable vehicle control andhelps tires wear evenly and last longer. If yourtires squeal when you turn or if you noticeyour steering wheel veers to one side whiledriving straight, it’s time to get your wheels re-aligned.

5. Bald Isn’t Beautiful—Lack of treadaffects the tire’s ability to grip the road, espe-cially in wet conditions. Make sure tires don’thave uneven wear, which indicates somethingis wrong with the tire. High or low spots orunusually smooth areas may decrease tractionand increase the risk of road accidents.

“Maintaining tire pressure is one of themost critical things motorists can do toimprove road safety while getting the mostfrom their tires,” said Mark Marrufo ofDiscount Tire. “Improperly inflated tires leadto decreased steering and braking control aswell as excessive tire wear and fuel consump-tion. Taking five minutes each month to inspectyour tires will go a long way in keeping youand your passengers safe.”

A Five-Minute FixChecking tire pressure and tread is easy

and can pay dividends when it comes to fueleconomy and handling. Don’t go by appear-ances. Use a tire gauge to check the pressuresince a tire can be 50 percent underinflatedbut still not appear flat.

Make it a habit to check tire pressureevery month and always before a long jour-

ney. Use the vehicle manufacturer’s recom-mended tire pressure and don’t forget tocheck the spare and trailer tires.

“Most people forget to check the pressurein the spare tire and come to find that whenthey need it, the spare is flat,” said Marrufo.“This simple check could keep you from a cost-

ly tow if you get stuck with a flat.”Road trippers should also check tire tread

FIREWORKS SAFETY The best way toenjoy fireworks is to attend a public fire-works show put on by professionals. Hereare five safety steps for people setting fire-works off at home:

Never give fireworks to small children,and always follow the instructions on thepackaging.

Keep a supply of water close by as aprecaution.

Make sure the person lighting fireworksalways wears eye protection.

Light only one firework at a time andnever attempt to relight "a dud."

Never throw or point a firework towardpeople, animals, vehicles, structures or flam-mable materials.

GRILLING SAFETY Every year peopleare injured while using charcoal or gasgrills. Here are several steps to safely cooktreats for the backyard barbecue:

Always supervise a barbecue grill whenin use.

Never grill indoors – not in the house,camper, tent, or any enclosed area.

Make sure everyone, including the pets,stays away from the grill.

Keep the grill out in the open, away fromthe house, the deck, tree branches, or any-thing that could catch fire.

Use the long-handled tools especiallymade for cooking on the grill to keep thechef safe.
