Every autumn as the last leaves begin tofall, thousands of homeowners take time outof their busy schedules to clean out the gunkfrom their gutters. Those long, aluminum

troughs along your roofline and the down-spouts they connect to are essential forkeeping rainwater moving away from your

house and preventing all sorts of water-relat-ed issues.

Fortunately, cleaning gutters is not hard.All you need are a good pair of gloves, agutter scoop, a bucket, a ladder and a gar-den hose. Set up the ladder so that you can

see into the gutter running along yourroofline. Make sure you set the ladderagainst the house, not the gutter, as it won'tbe strong enough to support the weight.Then, using your scoop, remove all of thedebris that has collected inside the gutter.Toss it into your bucket and continue movingdown the length of the gutter until all isclear.

Depending upon the nature of thedebris, you may need a few more tools. Ifthe debris is mostly dried leaves, you maybe able to use a leaf blower to remove it. Ifyou have a lot of mud, you might need atrowel to scrape it up. Just be careful that

you don't damage the gutter.Once the gutter is clear, you will need toensure the downspouts are clear. To do this,connect the hose to a spigot, turn on thewater and fill the gutter with water. Watchthe downspout. If it is clear, the water shouldrun through it and into your yard. If it isplugged, try running a hanger or a plumb-ing snake up it to dislodge the clog. If thatdoesn't work, you may need to remove onesection of the downspout at a time until youresolve the clog.

generally do not get as dirty as gutters. Allkinds of debris can fall into the trough-likegutters from dead insects to dried out leaves.It is important that you clean them regularlyto keep the channels clear and t he rainwatermoving. If you don't, all sorts of problems

can arise. Water can pool in the gutters, pro-viding the perfect breeding grounds for rust,mold and insects. As the debris builds up, itcan cause the gutters to sag, which canallow the water to overflow down onto thehouse and into the foundation. Over time,

this can damage the siding, windows andfoundation. It can also cause roof rot. If leftunchecked long enough, the gutters may rustout and fall, pulling the downspouts awaywith them.

They may not look like much, but guttersand downspouts do a lot to keep your homein good condition. Don't leave the cleaningof them to chance. Take time out to do ityourself or hire a professional. Inexpensivegutter guards are available which you caninstall yourself to reduce the amount ofdebris that gets into your gutters and mini-

mize cleanings. If budget permits, you mightalso want to look into having some type ofgutter guard system installed, especially ifyou live in a home with multiple stories. Thiswill keep your gutters clean and your feet onthe ground for a long time to come.
