After finishing school and landingtheir first jobs, the furthest thing onmany young professionals' minds isretirement. Although the day youngworkers will cash their last paychecksand bid farewell to the workplace maybe decades down the road, it's never tooearly to begin saving for retirement.

The sooner a person begins savingfor retirement, the more time his or hermoney will have to grow. As moredeposits are made and interest is com-pounded, retirement investments cangrow considerably.

Ideally, workers should begin savingas soon as possible. Compounding inter-est produces a better return for profes-sionals who start saving when they areyoung than for those who delay theirretirement savings. Unfortunately, many of today's new workers are notprioritizing retirement. According to astudy from Hewitt Associates, just 31percent of Generation Y employees(individuals born after 1978) who areable to deposit money into a 401(k)retirement plan actually do so.

The easiest way to save for retire-ment is to make the process entirelyautomatic. One can achieve this by

signing up for an employer-sponsored401(k) or another retirement plan. When opening a 401(k), workers will

have a predetermined portion of their earnings deducted from theirpaychecks and deposited into theretirement account. Such contri-butions are made prior to beingtaxed, adding even more incentiveto begin saving as soon as possi-ble. Money deposited into a401(k) will then be available forwithdrawal when the employeereaches retirement age. If theemployer has a matching program, even better, as that means thecompany will match employeecontributions up to a certain per-centage.

A person may also want toestablish an IRA (individualretirement account). IRAs, whichare available as traditional IRAs orRoth IRAs, are typically offeredthrough financial establishmentsand provide tax-friendly ways tosave for retirement. There are dif-ferences between traditional IRAsand Roth IRAs, and these differ-ences are related to taxes and maydepend on when contributions aremade as well as when withdrawals aremade. Speak with a financial planner to

help you determine the IRA best suitedto your personal needs.

    Young professionals may want to

keep more of their retirement funds instocks and aggressive accounts to earnmore. As one gets older and closer toretirement, a conservative approach is

more prudent. Advisors may suggestolder professionals then begin investingin bonds and other less volatile oppor-

    tunities.Professionals of all ages ca

with a financial planner for mormation regarding retirement sav

addition, options to invest throemployer can be discussed withresources personnel.

    Drs. Richard and Bruce Winter

Dear Dr. Winter, I see advertisements for discountimplants in the paper what are the differences in treatmentwhen people offer such discounts?

First of all I would ask what the dentist’s training is andhow many implants they have placed. Does your dentisthave a specialty status such as being an oral surgeon, aperiodontist or are they board certified in implantology bythe American Board of Oral Implantologists? Do they haveFellowships in the American Academy of ImplantDentistry or a Diplomate in the International Congress of Oral Implantologists? I am an advocate of any dentist beingable to place implants within their scope and training. Youas the consumer can ask questions to insure your dentist isadequately trained. You may visit the ABOI.ORG, theAAID.COM to see the rigorous credentialing process thatexists in implant dentistry. As a graduate of the MischInternational Implant Institute, I can say there are somerigorous training courses for implant education and fordentists performing complex implant treatment thistraining is invaluable.

Next realize that not all implants are the same, not allchimneys are the same and not all laboratories making yourcrowns and bridges are the same. While dental implantsmade by reputable companies all work, there can always bediscussions as to why a certain implant was selected over

others. Sometimes standard abutments or chimneys can beused and sometimes-esthetic zirconia (white) chimneys arepreferable. The selection of a custom abutment caninfluence the costs of implant treatment. Lastly, dental labscharge different amounts and that charge can mean you arehaving a master laboratory technician making your crownsunder microscopes to insure the best fit or they can havetheir crowns shipped to China to have them done infactories that don’t have the same quality control standardswe have here. The dentist should be able to discuss thelevel of quality you are receiving.

I think all dentists want to help control costs as thisallows more patients to say yes to needed dental care. Butwhen someone promises a low price and says they can doit for X they often have to change that price when theyevaluate the patient’s lack of bone, need for grafting, sickand failing teeth that increase the complexity of therestoration so often a discount price is used in advertisingto get you in the door!

I would be wary of people that promise prices in anewspaper and trust the dentist that gives you prices basedupon your medical and dental history, a truly thoroughexamination and x-rays as well as a cone beam scan or 3dimensional imaging if needed. I always offer discountsto help people get the dentistry they require as insurancecompanies are not comprehensive for dentistry.

I offer complimentary implant consultations and second

opinions. I offer discounts on implant examinations and x-rays for people that want firm costs outlined at their visit. That is how health care should be run—not by offeringbargain basement prices without seeing your particularsituation.

Negro History Week proved inspiringto communities across the country, whoorganized local celebrations and estab-lished historical clubs to study the histo-ry of black Americans while educatingothers as well. Negro History Week provedso popular that, by the late 1960s, it hadevolved into Black History Week. Manycredit the Civil Rights Movement for the
