Smoke alarms can help make the dif-

ference between life and death in a fire,but they need to be working, said LorraineCarli, NFPAs vice president of Outreachand Advocacy. This years Fire PreventionWeek campaign reinforces the importanceof testing smoke alarms each month, andworks to ensure that people have the need-

ed protection in the event of a home fire.Working smoke alarms cut the risk of

dying in a home fire in half. While researchshows that most U.S. homes have at leastone smoke alarm, almost two-thirds ofhome fire deaths result from fires in homeswith no smoke alarms or no working smokealarms.

The common presence of smokealarms in the home tends to create a falsesense of security, said Carli. Simply hav-ing smoke alarms isn't enough. They needto be tested and maintained properly.

In addition to monthly testing, smokealarms should be installed and maintained

as follows: There should be at least on

alarm on every level of the home (ithe basement), outside all sleepinand in every bedroom.

By Melinda MyersYou can see and feel the change of sea-sons. Fall color is starting to appear, pan-sies, mums and asters are in the garden cen-ter and your thoughts are turning to prepar-ing your landscape for winter.

Those in warm climates are switching towinter annuals, while those in colder

regions are fortifying their landscapes forthe cold winter ahead. No matter whereyou live, invest some time in preparing yourlandscape for the change in seasons.Dedicating some time now will pay off withhealthier more beautiful plants next spring.

Continue to mow the lawn high as longas it continues to grow. Theres no need tocut it short unless that is the look you prefer.

Fertilize the grass with a low nitrogenslow release fertilizer like Milorganite ). Fallfertilization provides the greatest benefit toyour lawn and gives you the best value forthe time and money invested.

Those in cooler regions growing blue-grass, fescue and perennial ryegrass shouldfertilize around Labor Day when tempera-tures start to cool. Then make a final appli-cation between Halloween andThanksgiving before the ground freezes.

Those in warmer climates growing cen-tipede, Bermuda and zoysia should also fer-tilize around Labor Day. However, be sureto make the last fall application at least onemonth prior to the average first killing frost.

Shred leaves as they fall. Leave someon the lawn to add organic matter and nutri-ents to the soil. As long as you can see thegrass blades through the shredded leavesyour lawn will be fine.

Use the rest of the shredded leaves inyour compost pile, as mulch on top of thesoil or as a soil amendment. Just dig a twoto three inch layer into the top 12 inches ofannual or new planting beds. These leaveswill break down and add organic matter. Byspring the leaves will decompose and thegarden bed will be ready to cultivate andplant.

Plant a few bulbs now for a colorfulearly spring display. Incorporate compost,aged manure or other organic matter intothe planting area. Add a low nitrogen slowrelease fertilizer at the time of planting. Ingeneral, plant bulbs two to three times theirvertical diameter deep. Follow specificplanting and spacing directions on the pack-age or tag.

Select animal-resistant bulbs to avoidsquirrels digging up the bulbs and deer andrabbits eating the blooms. Daffodils,hyacinths, grape hyacinths and squills are afew to consider. Little Tommies (Crocus tom-masinianus) tend to be more squirrel resist-ant than other crocus varieties.

Those gardening in mild climates needlow chill bulbs that will thrive and flowerafter a mild winter. Or purchase precooledbulbs for winter planting and spring flower-ing.
