Don’t pack away that shovel andtrowel. Fall is a great time to plant afew new additions in the landscape. Here are just a few ideas for addingimmediate and long term beauty toyour garden.

Add cool season annuals like pan-sies, snapdragons, ornamental kale andstocks to brighten the fall garden. Those in milder regions will enjoy themthroughout the winter. Consider addingcold hardy pansies. They provide colorin the fall garden, survive most winters, and are back blooming in the spring just as the snow melts.

Fall is also a good time to plantperennials, trees and shrubs. The soil iswarm and the air cooler, so the plantsare less stressed and establish morequickly. Select plants suited to thegrowing conditions and be sure to givethem plenty of room to reach theirmature size.

Plant trees so the root flare, theplace where the roots curve away fromthe trunk, is even with the soil surface.Dig a hole, the same depth as the root-ball, and two to five times wider.Roughen the sides of the hole and back-fill with the existing soil. Water thor-oughly and spread a two to three inch

layer of mulch over the soil surface, keeping the mulch away from the treetrunk.

Follow a similar planting procedurefor shrubs. Plant these so the crown, the place where the stems meet theroots, is even with the soil surface. Andbe sure to keep the mulch away fromthe stems.

Plant daffodils, tulips, hyacinthsand other bulbs in fall for extra colornext spring. Set the bulbs at a depth of two to three times their height deep. Then cover them with soil and sprinkleon a low nitrogen slow release fertilizer, like Milorganite (milorganite.com).This organic nitrogen fertilizer pro-motes rooting without stimulating fallgrowth subject to winter kill.

Start planting spring flowering bulbsafter the nighttime temperatures hoverbetween 40 and 50 degrees. Be patient– waiting until the soil cools reducesthe risk of early sprouting that oftenoccurs during a warm fall.

Those gardening in the far south

and along the gulf coast can purchasepre-cooled bulbs to compensate for thewarm winters. Or the chilling can be

done at home by storing the bu

The new MRF began operating inMarch which is now sorting and process-

ing recyclables from approximately270,000 households served by singlesort recycling programs in the 25 partic-ipating Waukesha County communitiesand the City of Milwaukee. The MRF isdesigned to process 35 tons per hour or60,000 tons per year of recyclables.

If boots, a warm hat and a tuned-upsnow blower are the only items on yourwinter preparation list, your home main-tenance plan may need a makeover. Thesesimple home maintenance projects canhelp lower your energy bills, prevent morecostly repairs and/or increase the lifespanof your home.

    1. Heating & Ventilation - Examineyour fireplace and chimney system toensure that no soot or creosote has col-lected. Any cracks or voids could poten-tially cause a fire. Before you turn thefurnace or boiler on, replace the air filterand hire a professional to inspect the unitmore thoroughly. These steps will improve

the efficiency and life of your furnace andwill ensure stable indoor air quality.

    2. Seal Windows and Doors - If notproperly sealed, windows and doors canbe a major culprit for heat loss. To keepthe warm air inside, inspect the weather-stripping around your home's windowsand doors for leaks, rot or decay. Repair orreplace structural framing, and caulkinside and out, if necessary.

    3. Insulate well - One of the easiest

and most effective defenses against heatloss is proper insulation. Prevent colddrafts from entering and the loss of heat-ed air through basement headers, which, when left exposed, can make your furnacework harder. Look for a moisture-resistantproduct offering high thermal perform-ance, such as Roxul Comfortbatt insula-

The insulation will help improveenergy efficiency as soon as it's in placeand provide savings over the lifetime of your home. Comfortbatt can also be usedto top or replace old attic insulation. Aimfor an R-50 or a depth of 16 inches.

    4. Backyard Care - Save your property

from potential damage by trimmigrown trees and shrubs to prevladen branches from thrashing electrical wires and your home's Drain/shut off any exterior faucsprinkler systems to prevent fEnsure rain or snow drains away fhouse to avoid foundation proble

Those tired of battling the animalsmay want to plant resistant bulbs suchas daffodils, hyacinths, Fritillaria, alli-ums, Camassia, glory-of-the snow, snowdrops, squills, and grape hyacinths. Youmay find it is easier to avoid the prob-lem than battle the animals with repel-lents and scare tactics.

Plant a few short season vegetables

in your garden for fresh-from-the gar-den flavor this fall. Simply count thedays from planting to the average firstfall frost to determine how many grow-ing days are left in your area. Selectvegetables that will mature and can beharvested in that amount of time. Leaf lettuce, spinach, mustard greens, radishes and carrots are fast growing, cool weather tolerant vegetables thatmake great additions to the fall gardenand your dinner plate.

Get these vegetables off to a good

start with a side dressing of low nitro-gen fertilizer. Incorporate it into the

soil prior to planting or sprinkle a nar-row band along the row of plants. Thisorganic nitrogen will provide needednutrients without damaging the tenderseedlings.
