True to its mission of nurturing localtheatre artists, Milwaukee ChamberTheatre presents Montgomery DavisPlay Development Series staged read-ing of “500 years” by Michelle Lopez-Rios Monday, May 4 at 7:30 p.m.

“500 years” explores the memory ofa 500-year-old Latina as she reflects onher life and the people she has knownalong the way. Among the charactersare a 16th-century Spanish court cook,the wife of a Mexican fighting at theAlamo, and an activist in Milwaukee.The piece incorporates song and dance,navigating the collision of Spanish,Mexican, and American cultures.

The playwright herself will performthe reading of this one-actor piece andher husband Alvaro Saar Rios willdirect. Lopez-Rios is an AssociateProfessor of Voice and Speech andhead of the Acting program at UW-Milwaukee. She is also an actress, direc-tor and vocal coach. She is a co-founder of The Royal Mexican Playersand has also worked with RenaissanceTheaterworks, Houston Shakespeareand Unity Theatre. She received her BFAfrom the University of SouthernCalifornia and her MFA from theUniversity of Houston.

“[500 Years] is an homage to my

family, my history, and in particular thewomen,” says Lopez-Rios.

The play will be performed on in theSkylight Bar & Bistro, located on the sec-ond level of the Broadway TheatreCenter, 158 N. Broadway inMilwaukee’s Historic Third Ward.Tickets for the reading are Pay-What-You-Can at the door. Seating is first-come, first-served.

Waterwise is not just about growingdrought tolerant plants or eliminating plant-ings. It is a holistic approach to managingwater to avoid flooding that overwhelmssewer systems, improper watering thatwastes water, and poor landscape designsthat generate too much work and requiretoo many resources.

Make this the season that you incorpo-rate a few waterwise habits into your gar-dening. You’ll find it is good for your gar-den, the environment and your pocketbook.Start with one or more of these strategiesthis year.

Select the right plant for the growingconditions. Plants that thrive in normal grow-ing conditions for your area will be healthi-er, require less care and need less water.Look for drought tolerant plants that require

less water once established.Keep water out of the storm sewers and

in the garden instead. Prevent floodingwhile improving your garden. Adding sever-al inches of compost to the top 8 to 12 inch-es of soil increases the soil’s ability toabsorb and retain water. This means lessrunoff into the storm sewers and less fre-quent watering.

Use plants to prevent runoff and con-serve water. Plant trees, shrubs, and ground-covers to slow the flow of rainwater,increase the amount of water that stays inyour landscape for your plants, and to filterwater before it enters the groundwater.Install one or more rain gardens to interceptsurface water runoff for use by rain gardenplants and to help recharge the groundwa-ter.

Provide plants with a healthy diet. Usea slow release non-leaching organic nitro-gen fertilizer like Milorganite(milorganite.com). You’ll encourage slowsteady growth, so your plants will requireless water and be less prone to insect anddisease problems. Plus, the slow release

Water wisely. Water plants thoroughlyand only when needed. Water the soil, notthe plant, using a watering wand, drip irri-gation or a soaker hose so less water is lostto evaporation. Water early in the morningwhenever possible to reduce water loss dur-ing the heat of the day and diseases causedby wet foliage at night.

Manage your lawns to reduce wateruse. Select drought tolerant grass varietiesto reduce watering needs. Prepare the soilbefore seeding or sodding or aerate andspread a thin layer of compost over existinglawns to increase water absorption andreduce runoff. Mow high to encouragedeep roots that are more drought tolerantand pest resistant. Allow lawns to go dor-mant during hot dry weather. If irrigating,water thoroughly when needed, that’s whenyour footprints remain in the lawn.

Conserve water and reduce time andmoney spent on plant care. Mulch the soilaround trees, shrubs and other plants withseveral inches of woodchips, shreddedleaves, evergreen needles or other organicmaterial. Mulching reduces watering fre-

quency, prevents soil compaction fromheavy rainfall thus increasing water absorp-tion. It also adds organic matter to the soilas it decomposes.

Repair leaking faucets, fittings and gar-den hoses. A slow leak of one drip per sec-ond can waste up to nine gallons of waterper day.

Look for and use wasted water. Collectthe “warming water” typically wasted whenpreparing baths and showers. Use a five-gallon bucket to collect this fresh water anduse it for your containers and gardens.Collect water from your dehumidifier andwindow air conditioners for use on flower-ing plants. Do not, however, use this water ifenvironmentally harmful solvents have beenused to clean this equipment.

Check with your local municipality ifyou are considering using gray water. Onceyou wash clothes, dishes or yourself, wateris classed as gray water and most munici-palities have guidelines or regulations relat-ed to its use.

Harvest rainwater if your municipalityallows. The ancient technique of capturingrainwater in jugs, barrels and cisterns hasmade a comeback. Collecting rain when it isplentiful and storing it until it is needed isone way to manage water for the land-

scape. But first check local regulationsbefore installing a rain harvesting system.Several states have banned rain harvesting,while others offer rebates or rain barrels ata discount to gardeners.
