NORTH Pondoland residents have occupieda land in Mizizi locality after they felt thatthe land was wrongfully used by the Commu-nal Property Association (CPA).

The residents claim that the CPA, is de-stroying their land by turning it into a sandmining area for their own benefit.

The residents from three locations beingMfolozi, Hlolweni and Tyeni were movedfrom the land many years ago to make wayfor the sugarcane plantation that was estab-

lished in the area. After the project was laterterminated, the land was left with no activeprojects.

Elliot Mditshwa, Chairperson of Mizizi De-velopment Forum said that they have decidedto re-occupy their land that they gave out fordevelopment but is now being vandalized.

“While the land was still used as a sugar-cane plantation, many jobs were created mak-ing it easy for the locals to feed their familieswhile working locally and building schools, community halls and constructing accessroads,” said Mditshwa.

He added that they are calling for the inter-vention of the provincial government because

even though they are occupying their land, they are protecting it hoping that it could

be used for developmental projects for thebenefit of everyone.

Traditional leader Chief JongamampondoMditshwa said that the problems there start-ed when some government officials inter-vened showing interest in the development ofthe land while giving ownership of the landto the wrong people.

“They formed the CPA with the wrongclaimants to the land who vandalized the landso badly that the offices and buildings thatwere there were destroyed,” said ChiefMditshwa.

He said that he will meet with the communi-ty and convince them to save the land for de-velopment as he is already in talks with poten-tial funders to develop this piece of land.

FARMERS in the rural village of Ntshiqo, be-tween Tsolo and Maclear, are working with theInstituteofNaturalResourcesNPC(INR)totestrainwater harvesting techniques in theirhomestead gardens.

This participatory action research is part ofa Water Research Commission-funded projectentitled: “Up-scaling of rainwater harvestingand conservation on communal crop and ran-geland through integrated crop and livestockproduction for increased water use productivi-ty” (Project no. K5/2177/4/).

The project is investigating how rainwaterharvesting and water conservation can im-prove crop and livestock water productivity.

Water productivity is a valuable tool formeasuring how effectively water is used. Itmeasures the total beneficial outputs in rela-tion to the amount of water used. This is partic-ularly important because South Africa is asemi-arid and water-scarce country.

“Rainwater harvesting is any system thatcollects and stores water; for example, a dam isa rainwater harvesting system, as is a roof wa-ter collection tank (‘JoJo’ tank),” says JonMcCosh, project leader, Institute of Natural Re-sources.

“The basic elements of a rainwater harvest-ing system are a collection area (for example,a water catchment or a roof top) and a storagearea (a dam or a tank),” says McCosh.

With so many different techniques to choosefrom, the researchers sat down with farmersand discussed the different options available tothem and selected the preferred technique inparticipation with the farmers.

The farmers chose contour rainwater har-vesting, probably because this is what they arefamiliar with. Working with four farmers tostart with, they implemented micro-catchment(in-field) rainwater harvesting and conserva-tion. This means that the field itself is used to

collect and store rainwater. Contours arespaced at two- to three-metre intervals on theslope. The space between the contours gener-ates runoff when it rains. The water collects onthe contours and goes into the soil, where plantroots can use it.

To test the effect of rainwater harvesting onyield, farmers divided their fields and planteda portion of the field the way they would nor-mally plant (the control) and the other portionwas planted using the rainwater harvestingtechnique. Results from the first year of re-search show promise.

Baweni Sokhombela, whose garden is 0.2hain size, almost doubled his yields by introduc-ing rainwater harvesting (440kg of maize com-pared with 264kg using his normal practice –this is equivalent to an increase from 1.2t/ha to2.0 t/ha).

Gloria Quvile farms 0.3ha of land near herhomestead. Her harvest from the control was1 500kg, while her harvest from the rainwaterharvesting treatment was 2 300kg. This isequivalent to an increase from 5.1 t/ha to 7.8t/ha, an increase of more than 50%.

“Unfortunately not all farmers got good re-sults. Weeding fields is difficult work and somefarmers couldn’t control weeds adequately, re-sulting in poor yields. At a farmers’ day, suc-cessful farmers showed off their fields andshared their experiences with rainwater har-vesting. This generated a great amount of inter-est with farmers and the farmers who did notget good results were encouraged to try again, said Mr Nongcawula of the Eastern Cape De-partment of Rural Development and AgrarianReform.

“The results from the first year of researchsuggest that rainwater harvesting in fields candramatically increase crop yields for farmers.Byintercroppingwith fodderplants, soilhealthis improved and there is additional feed availa-ble for livestock in winter. Our research willcontinue to double-check that the results fromthe first year are repeatable,” says McCosh.

IMPORTANT infrastructure improvementprogrammes in the Amathole District Mu-nicipality have been suspended only tempo-rarily, because of a shortage of funds, East-ern Cape Premier Phumulo Masualle hassaid.

He was responding to questions from theDA leader in the legislature, Athol Trollip, regarding the suspension of the projects.

Masualle said some projects had pro-gressed faster than expected and this had re-sulted in the municipality spending its2014/15 Municipal Infrastructure Grant al-location before the end of the financial year(April 15).

This had affected the 2015/16 budget andplans and requests had been made to theprovincial Treasury and the CooperativeGovernance and Traditional Affairs Depart-ment for additional funds, but no positivefeedback had been received.

“The projects are not terminated, they aresuspended for a while until the municipality

is in a better financial state to continue withthem.

“Service providers already appointed willcontinue with projects until they have beencompleted,” he said.

IN an attempt to improve environ-mental management, the Wildlife andEnvironment Society of South Africa(Wessa) has forged a partnership withschools throughout South Africa withthe introduction of a programmecalled Wessa Eco-Schools.

The aim of the programme was to

encourage schools to improve theirenvironmental management, said An-diswa Mbanjwa of Wessa. This mes-sage was expected to spread to the sur-rounding communities and get peoplereally “caring for the earth”.

Wessa worked recently with Qum-bu Village Junior Secondary Schoolteachers and pupils to clean up theMzeke River.

The river has been neglected by the

community and as a result the wateris no longer consumable.

Wessa, teachers and pupils spent anentire day cleaning the river banks, finding abandoned animal carcassesandmanyotherthingsthatweredirty-ing the environment and spoiling thebeauty of the river.

The provincial Department of Wa-ter and Sanitation contributed plasticbags, gloves and rakes. Teacher Nom-

bulelo Lokhwe said the river’s poorstate was due to the lack of a properrefuse collection strategy and the ab-sence of public toilets.

She questioned the Mhlontlo mu-nicipality about its support in thismatter.

“The municipality needs to take anactive role, by building public toiletsor perhaps a fence around the river,”she suggested.

She expressed gratitude to Wessaand all involved in the initiative.

“There should more programmeslike this until the whole of society getsits hands dirty in cleaning the envi-ronment.”

She said the pupils had learnt a lotin this initiative and the importanceof caring for the environment wouldremain in their minds.

PARENTS of autistic children havecalled on the Department of Educa-tion to build a school in Mthatha toaccommodate their children as atpresent they have to travel long dis-tances to find such schools.

Autistic pupils are easily dis-tracted and need special classes, with one-on-one teaching.

The only government school ofthis type in the Eastern Cape is theQuest Special School in Port Eliza-beth.

Nomaza Nkohla, the leader of theOR Tambo Autism Spectrum Disor-der task team, said the absence ofa school for the autistic in Mthathawas badly affecting children in thearea who had this disorder.

She said the Quest school in PortElizabeth was always full, which re-sulted in a long waiting list and di-minished the chances of autistic

children getting a decent education. She said the school in Port Eliza-

beth needed people who could af-ford to go there, but those in the ru-ral towns of Transkei found it diffi-cult to send their children therebecause of the distance and cost.

Nkohla said they had held meet-ings with the department andraised the matter.

“We need a government schoolthat will accommodate advantagedand disadvantaged children whohave autism throughout the Tran-skei.

“And it must have a boarding fa-cility so that such children do nothave to travel when they attendschool.

“We would love the school to havean occupational therapist, dietitianand speech therapist,” she said.

Nkohla called on all parents withautistic children to come forwardand join the battle to get the school.

“We need to ascertain the num-

ber of parents who have such chil-dren and submit it to the depart-ment in an endeavour to make ourproposal strong,” she said.

Bandlakazi Bambeni of Mthathawas the first parent to write a letterto the national Department of Edu-cation appealing to it to build aschool in the area.

Bambeni mentioned the distan-ces she had to travel to look for aschool in Port Elizabeth for hereight-year-old child.

“Yes there are private schools, but they are very expensive, aboutR3 200 a month, and they are not inUmtata but in East London. Thatmoney is too much, especially for asingle parent and unemployed per-son like me”, she said.Express is in possession of

e-mails in which Bambeni commu-nicated with the national Depart-ment of Education. She was re-ferred to the provincial depart-ment.

WALTER Sisulu University (WSU)celebrated its students’ hard workand dedication by awarding 734 de-grees, diplomas and certificates todeserved graduands during the insti-tution’s 2015 September graduationceremony at the Mthatha campus.

An overwhelming majority of 418women were capped, 321 men re-ceived the honours, and 31 of the totalgraduated cum laude.

A total of nine PhDs, 25 master’sand 39 honours degrees were award-ed.

Six of the PhDs were conferred up-on students in the university’s edu-cational sciences faculty and thehealth sciences faculty received thethree remaining accolades.

The total number of WSU gradu-ates for this year is therefore 5 273,with the total number of doctoral de-

grees conferred standing at 16.This was a good number of doctoral

degrees compared with previousyears, despite the fact that the uni-versity was an institution in transi-tion, where doctoral degrees/PhDswere only offered in education andhealth sciences, the university said.

The university also announcedthat the Department of Higher Edu-cation and Training had just ap-proved the offering of doctoral de-grees in natural sciences at the insti-tution.

“The university is to make a sub-mission to the Higher EducationQualifications Committee and thento the South African QualificationsAuthority for registration of thequalification,” the university said ina statement.

“So, those of you who want to doPhDs in natural sciences at WSU, theopportunity for that is coming soon.

“Watch this space. This productiontrend will definitely improve the fi-nancial situation at WSU in the yearsto come.”

GAUTENG-based Port Elizabeth gospel mu-sic producer, Sizwe Zako, has unearthed newtalent from the dungeons of Libode in Nyan-deni in the Transkei.

This musical treasure with the hoarsevoice, isOzayoNdamase (26). His album“Ndi-celeNtonye,” showsZako’s golden touch, sim-ilarly brought by great stars like RebeccaMalope and Vuyo Mokoena. It is through Sizwe Zako Production that

music fans were blessed by Eastern Capegroups like Bantu Church of Christ, theLord’s Comforters and Youth with Missionfrom where artists such as Veliswa Skeyi,Malibongwe Gcwabe and Khanyisa – to men-tion but few – had been able to cut their teeth.Through Ozayo – who was born with de-

formed feet and who is blind and could notspeak properly for a long time – Zako has dis-covered a true worshipper with great talent.Meeting Ozayo was by sheer chance, remi-

real talent. Ozayo told me that for him it wasnot about the competition. He asked me torecord him, because there was this thing boil-ing inside him which wanted to get out. Andthe rest, as they say, is history,” said Zakoproudly.Zako used “the best engineers” to work on

Ozayo’s sound and he is happy with the finalproduct – great praise and worship songssung with sincerity by someone who did not

just sing, according to Zako, but who also isa believer who trusts in God.“I have never been to school. I was born

with a disability. I suffered from fits and bothmy parents (Magadi and Sicelo Ndamase)died while I was still young,” said Ozayo, theeighth of nine children. He said he startedsinging from an early age.He said he joined the Assemblies of God

Church and sang from hearing other peoplesing. People paid him R20 to buy bread.“I want to thank God for tat’ uSizwe Zako.

The Lord bless him,” he said.He added that he wanted to thank Bishop

Tsepho Machea too, for giving him his firstbreak at cutting a CD.He sold the music himself until he heard

of the talent search competition which gavehim the break to sell his music in all musicstores in the country.

There is light at the end of the tunnelYou know what, when you see someone

who looks like he or she is seized by alcoholor wrong practices in this world, don’t throwin the towel over that particular person. It’sjust that God is still paving his or her wayif not moulding his or her part. There are people out there who are regard-

you will never blind God above. Why boys? It’s just that there are people who act in

front of our eyes as living pure lives but be-hind the scenes they are Satan uqobo lwak-he.You can even blind the people by wearing

a nice church uniform if not a suit and carry-ing a very advanced Bible with the word ofGod, but if ukholo is not in your heart or ifit is not a calling you are just playing andGod will reveal that. Okay, here is a story. There was a guy whom we lived with at

Khwezi township in UTA a couple of yearsago. Actually he was a yard-mate.The guy claimed he had been saved and he

prayed about half of the night - even the mid-dle of the night.Okay, we had no problem with that even

though his action was a bit tormenting be-cause he always disturbed us in our slumber. But ke nothing esasingayenza the guy wasaccepted the calling and ethetha nenkosiyakhe. Every weekend he was not in UTA,

stating that he was going to spread the wordof God in other places particularly Idutywa.Okay son of God. You remember we said Godwill reveal if your ways are not as we seewhen you are in front of us.In January we met the man again pushing

the word of God very strongly in UTA.As you know we travel a lot and sithanda
