Finding a parking slot at TJ’s became a shopper’s versionof the 1959 Kingston Trio recording of a wonderful tunenamed “The M.T.A. Song,” better known as “Get Charlie offthe M.T.A.” Charlie didn’t have a nickel for the fare increaseso he couldn’t get off the train — “He may ride forever‘neath the streets of Boston. He’s the man who neverreturned.”
Of course, all those occupied spaces meant other people
were happily shopping, and Foothill Partners probably con-sidered that evidence of their success, but I thought theinconvenience was too much. Sometimes, when I was one ofthe shoppers doing the circling, I even wondered if I coulduse my cell phone to call a barista at Peet’s to bring me a cof-fee. There were even rumors that if your insurance carrierlearned you were shopping at Trader Joe’s, your rates wouldincrease.

POLES SHOW me to be the front-runner in the race formayor of Carmel. That’s right, poles, not the polls they’realways talking about on CNN and Fox News. My informationcomes from a couple of Polish friends of mine. If truth betold, I may not be leading in the polls, but I’m leading withthe Poles.
Thus, as the front-runner, I believe I should state myviews on issues that affect the residents of Carmel. The storyin the Oct. 2 edition of The Pine Cone about a proposed newshopping center going in on Rio Road had me bristling withanticipation. The story indicated that either Trader Joe’s orWhole Foods would occupy a 30,000-square-foot building onthe site. When I lived on the other side of the hill, I shoppedat both markets in Monterey. I know some people believeWhole Foods’ prices are too high, but when shopping foronly one person, the prices at Whole Foods don’t affect thefood budget that much. However, I stopped shopping atTrader Joe’s on Munras Avenue because parking therebecame a nightmare.
There is plenty of parking at Whole Foods at Del MonteShopping Center, although I think the lot in that part of theshopping center is one of the more dangerous places to parkon the Peninsula. There is not enough room between rows. Ittakes lots of maneuvering to back out of a space, because therear end of your car gets so close to the rear end of the car inthe row behind. My car was rear-ended twice there — bothtimes by pick-up trucks large enough to be hauling cattle.Neither driver left contact information. “The truck actuallylifted your car off the ground,” a witness told me.
But I digress. Back to the Rio Road shopping center. Myexcitement dropped faster than a botched facelift when I readthat the firm developing the new shopping center is FoothillPartners. This is the same company that developed the TraderJoe’s shopping center on Munras.
One of the principals of Foothill Partners said the newshopping center will reduce traffic on Highway 1 becauseshoppers in the Carmel area won’t have to “drive over thehill” to get to Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s. That was sup-posed to be the case at the Munras Avenue shopping center.That is, until Peet’s Coffee, r.g. Burgers, Ike’s Delicatessen,Chipotle and several other popular businesses opened storesthere.
station on Rio Road at Highway 1, from the road at theCalFire Station, and from a connection to the Barnyard.That’s a pretty busy area now. Cars traveling west on RioRoad could simply turn right into the center. Cars going easton Rio Road would have to turn left into it. Meanwhile, driv-ers coming out of the Crossroads shopping center fromStarbucks and Bank of America have to turn east on Rio andthen make a U-turn at the traffic light if they want to go westto get to Highway 1. There’s a bottleneck just waiting to hap-pen — especially if the new center proves to be popular,which it surely will.
The anchor store at the new center could be either TraderJoe’s or Whole Foods. But there will also be 14,500 squarefeet of other retail space available. Naturally, the plan wouldbe to rent the space to retailers who would attract as manyshoppers as possible.
As a candidate for mayor I applaud any idea that bringsnew businesses to our area. As mayor, though, I would wantto make sure a serious traffic nightmare isn’t created. Eventhough it would be outside the Carmel city limits, I would tryto use my influence to make sure the shopping center wasplanned as carefully as possible, because I know that if youbuild it, they will come.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: A loose dog was cap-tured in the area of Junipero and 10th, and thefinder attempted contact with the owner viainformation on the collar. Animal control offi-cer responded and secured the dog, and the areawas searched for an owner. Contact was madewith the dog walker, who had let the dog offleash. Information was obtained and the dogwas returned with a warning.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Person turned in apurse found in a business at Junipero andOcean. Returned to owner.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: A 38-year-old malewas contacted on Seventh Avenue at 1954 hoursand found to be unable to care for himself dueto intoxication. He was also seen drinking alco-hol in public. Subject was arrested and laterreleased with a citation at Monterey PoliceDepartment.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Subsequent to a trafficstop on Ocean Avenue at 2333 hours, a 17-year-old driver was found to be driving with a provi-sional license, with a 16-year-old passenger.She was also found to be in possession of mar-ijuana and tobacco products. She was releasedat the scene and the case forwarded for juvenilediversion.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Verbal domestic dis-pute between a husband and wife on CaminoReal; husband had been drinking and wasenraged when she poured his alcohol down thesink.
Carmel Valley: On Laguna Robles, a 15-year-old male under the influence of marijuanaand also in possession of marijuana was cited.
Pacific Grove: Theft from a locked hotelroom on Lighthouse Avenue.
Pacific Grove: Report of a subject actingsuspiciously in a business on LighthouseAvenue. Contacted a subject who had been pre-viously advised not to return to a store.Confirmed with employees that the subject isstill not welcome in business. Issued a warningcitation.
Pacific Grove: Documentation of an assaulton 17th. No prosecution requested.
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 4
Carmel-by-the-Sea: While conducting anarea check of Del Mar and Scenic, the officerobserved property on the slope on the west sideof Scenic just south of 11th Avenue. There wasno person around the property, and the officerwas unable to locate the owner. Officer collect-ed the property for safekeeping. Owner latercontact police department to collect the proper-ty. The subject was warned for violation ofmunicipal code section 12.32.1658, walking onthe slope, and the property was returned.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Responded to a reportof chemicals in a residence at Santa Fe and Firstafter a tenant was evicted. Multiple agenciesresponded and mitigated the hazard.Investigation turned over to PRVNT.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Vandalism to a busi-ness on Sixth west of Dolores.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Vehicle towed fromMonte Verde and Fifth for blocking a driveway.

The partieswere contacted and said theywere involved in a heated ver-bal argument, but there was nophysical abuse. Carmel-by-the-Sea: An unknown citizenfound an out-of-state driver’s license andbrought it to the police department for safe-keeping pending owner notification. Ownerwas located, and arrangements were made topick up the found property.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Investigated anattempted burglary on Junipero.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Person requested areport to document the loss of a cell phone onthe beach. The report is for information in theevent the cell phone is located.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: A traffic stop was con-ducted on a vehicle at Junipero and Second at2251 hours for a vehicle code violation. The 26-year-old male driver, a chef who lives inSeaside, was unlicensed and in possession ofmethamphetamine, and had an open alcoholicbeverage container inside his vehicle. The driv-er was arrested, and the vehicle was towed andstored.
Pacific Grove: Fire department requestedpolice response because a dead body was foundon Briggs. Victim died of natural causes. “Donot resuscitate” on file.
Pacific Grove: Animal control officer wascontacted by a Congress Avenue resident abouta sick cat in his yard. On arrival, the officerlocated an old cat that appeared to be malnour-ished and matted. The cat had a tag, but thephone number was not accepting calls. Officer
