Prime Carmel real estate for free – but there’s a cache to itIT’S NO secret that real estate in

Carmel-by-the-Sea is valuable and highlydesirable. Surprisingly, some of the mostsought after pieces of property are not onlyas small as a sardine can — they are free forthe finding. But here’s the cache ....

These little gems of property are all partof an international scavenger hunt called

Geocaching, where “geocachers” use GPSdevices, or smart phones, to hide and seekcontainers called “geocaches” anywhere onPlanet Earth. There are more than 5 milliongeocachers looking for 2,069,529 geocachesaround the world. There are enough geo-caches in Carmel and on the rest of theMonterey Peninsula to keep you hunting fora long time.

A usual cache is a small waterproof con-tainer, such as a Tupperware piece, or some-thing as small as an Altoids box. Inside is a“log book” where the geocacher enters thedate he found it and signs it with his estab-lished code name. After he’s signed the log,the person who found it must place thecache back exactly where it was found.Leave no trace is a guiding principle of geo-cachers, who take great care not to disturbthe environment.

Many caches contain insignificant trin-kets such as golf tees, buttons or paperclips. The finder may remove a trinket but mustreplace it with something equally as inscon-sequential.

I went on a hunt, not for a geocache, butfor a geocacher. “Ynots4,” asked me to useher code name.

“Any geocacher who sees my code namewill know who I am,” she said. Y, my nick-name for her, told me she has been geo-caching for 10 years. She has located 1,068caches and hidden another 62. She said theactivity is great fun for kids. Her son, a BoyScout, just earned a Geocaching MeritBadge.

Most caches are single site locations.Others are multi-sites, where finding onegives you clues leading to another location.“Y” said there are multi-site hunts that covermultiple states.

Geocachers get together to swap stories

and trinkets. Rarely do they complain aboutcaches being too difficult to find (no geo-kvetching). CITO (Cache In Trash Out) is anongoing environmental initiative. Since2002, geocachers have been dedicated tocleaning up parks and other cache-friendlyplaces in their communities as a public ser-vice.

How better to understandthe activity than by trying itout? Off I virtually went to mysmart phone’s App Store todownload a Geocaching App.There were several there, so Idownloaded the one that isfree. Geocaches are rated by

degree of difficulty. It is mandatory that the seeker not need a

tool, such as a trowel or shovel, to find thecache — remember the leave no trace prin-ciple.

Once you select a cache, you are present-ed with a screen that identifies your location, tells you how far away the cache is, providesyou with a description and a compass, point-ing you in the right direction.

As you approach the cache, the distanceis reduced to feet (327 more feet, 159 morefeet, etc.) until you are within two feet of thecache. Then you have to use your eyes. If youstill have trouble you can check a “hint” thatjust about gives it away.

The name of my first cache was “In theGarden.” Since I recently wrote about thegarden at the Church of the Wayfarer, I fig-ured that would be a good start. I found it,but I won’t give away where the cache is.

My next one was easy, too. It is called“The Valentine,” which I know is the nameof the bronze sculpture of a couple seated ona park bench at Lincoln and Sixth. A historylesson was included along with a biographyof the sculptor, George Lundeen.

The third was more difficult, since it wasin an area of Carmel I don’t get to, often. Itsname is “The Jane Powers Walkway.” Again, history was provided.

This walkway honors Jane GallatinPowers (1868-1944) whose husband, Frank, was one of the real estate developers whofounded Carmel. She played a key role inluring artists to the village after the SanFrancisco earthquake of 1906.

I learned from the clue that Jane Powerswas the daughter of Albert Gallatin, whobecame rich during the Gold Rush and builtthe Governor’s Mansion at 16th and H inSacramento.

inexpensive fun, good clean exercise andlearn things about your own town that youmay not know. Not only is it free, there’s nocatch to it.

Jerry Gervase can be reached [email protected].

The website is www.geocaching.com.Once you register with a user name and pass-word, you can log your successful hunts andlook for geocaches anywhere in the world, not at sea, so there is no geo-ketching.
