right around the corner I thought it appropriate to writesomething about books and ideas. I read an article recentlyabout the difficulty people have in getting rid of books whentrying to reduce clutter. I confess to being one of those per-sons. Whenever I attempt to weed out books from my shelvesI can feel their spines stiffen as they stand firm, ready toresist my eviction notices.

What surprises me when trying to control my clutteredshelves is looking at titles and not remembering why I pur-chased a particular book in the first place. Many wereacquired because I was going to read them someday. Myculling out process usuallybegins with reference books. How many books on gram-mar, usage, and style can onehave? Apparently not enoughto cover the writing mistakes Imake every day. Yet, if youwant to learn grammar whilelaughing your head off, hang on tightly to Karen ElizabethGordon’s “The Deluxe Transitive Vampire – the ultimatehandbook of grammar for the innocent, the eager, and thedoomed.”

Some books are simply indispensable. For instance, my“Reverse Dictionary” leads me to words that are on the tip ofmy tongue by directing me from the word I know to the wordI need.

“Schott’s Original Miscellany” is beyond trivia. It isessential to discovering useless information. Who can predictwhen I’ll need to know the dessert choices on the Titanic onApril 14, 1912? (Waldorf Pudding, Peaches in ChartreuseJelly, Chocolate and Vanilla Éclairs, French Ice Cream.) Orcarry on a conversation about some notable Belgians(Audrey Hepburn and/or Jean Claude Van Damme). I don’tknow why I have “The Business Guide,” published in 1890,but it is the 18th edition, so it must have sold very well.

Laugh if you will, but I cannot live without H.E. Jacob’s“Six Thousand Years of Bread.” It is a historical compendiumof bread’s role (roll?) in politics, religion, and technology forthe past six millennia. If you want to know how bread causedNapoleon’s defeat, it’s all there. (Poor Bonaparte – bread was

Unbearable Lightness of Being. Thus the box to tote awaybooks sits empty by the book case. It is not the fault of thebooks. I am so attached to them that displacing even onewould be like condemning my own child to some Dickensianorphanage. I usually end up leaving them alone so their inter-nal versos and rectos can face each other while facing anoth-er day secure in my care.

Jerry Gervase can be reached at [email protected]

Getting rid of books would be like sending my children to an orphanagethe yeast of his problems.)

It is a complete mystery why I own “Surgical Nursing,”since I don’t remember where it came from, and I can’tunderstand a word of it because it is written entirely inChinese. How about 10 cook books for a guy who thinksman’s greatest inventions are Kraft Singles, those little boxesof cereal you can pour milk into, and the wireless can open-er.

Certain books like, professional athletes, have no-cutclauses within them. One untouchable is the “Dictionary ofImaginary Places. It is my irreplaceable Baedeker wheneverI return to Xanadu, Shangri-La, or Narnia.

I would be lost in an ento-mological wasteland withoutmy Encyclopedia of Wordand Phrase Origins. And ifyou wanted to know whoAchilles’ parents were, youbetter have a “Short Historyof Mythology” handy

(Peleus and Thetis). If someone asks me about Fubin’sTheorem or Euler’s Laws of Motion I just leaf through my“Dictionary of Theories.”

I wonder if the exercise to cull books from the shelvesmight be a pretense to reconnect to each book, a chance tomeet and greet old friends such as Billy Collins, LawrenceBlock, Nelson DeMille, Dunne and Didion, Eco and Oates. Ican hold their thoughts and ideas in my hands recallingsomething I gleaned from their pages — perhaps a discoverythat made me shout “Eureka” with all the enthusiasm ofArchimedes leaping from his bathtub. However, in deferenceto my readers’ sensibilities, unlike that great Mathematician,I shall remain fully clothed.

Still, I believe there is a more intimate reason why it is sodifficult for me to get rid of books. You see, they are safewith me, sustained and lovingly tended, protected from theelements so neither dampness nor mildew infest them.Watchful bookends stand like silent sentinels, keeping theassembly orderly lest Anne Lamott impishly poke CormacMcCarthy in the spine.

In the stillness of the shelves I can hear a Horse Whispereror Snow Falling on Cedars and I can almost feel the
