There is a lady with the improbablename of Gladys Georgiana Green wholives on Carmel Point. She’s had a homehere since 1937, and she very seldomleaves it. She’s about 5 feet tall, has mis-chievous blue eyes and a voice you willnever forget. When her long-time friendand director, Frank Capra, called her somemonths ago and asked her to be his specialguest at a luncheon given in his honor, sheturned him down without hesitation; notthat she doesn’t adore Mr. Capra, but shehates publicity. In her long career, she hasplayed opposite Gary Cooper, JimmyStewart, Cary Grant, Clark Gable, theBarrymores, Alan Ladd and other headlin-ers. You’ll remember her in Shane, YouCan’t Take it With You, Mr. Smith Goesto Washington and dozens of other films. And you’ll remember her as Peter Pan onBroadway, as a professor of drama atVassar and North Carolina State, and as atelevision actress. She was born inPlattsburg, N.Y. in (the record is blurredhere), started a modelling career in NewYork, and accepted a contract inHollywood. Her first hit was TheSaturday Night Kid with Clara Bow. FoxFilms and Paramount missed her appeal, and it took MGM to make her a major star. It’s a pleasure to salute JEAN ARTHUR,one of Carmel’s proudest legends.
Just a short stroll from Carmel Beach yet convenient to all is a quaint, shingle-sided cottage simply dripping with charm. This wonder-ful 3 bedrooms, 2.5 baths, home offers three fireplaces, plaster walls, hardwood floors, a spectacular kitchen adjacent to a formal diningroom. Upstairs we find a private master suite with limestone bath featuring shower and tub and accented with evening sunsets streamingthrough the Monterey Pines. Yes….. this and more and all…..on a cozy corner in Carmel. $1,650,000

By CHRIS COUNTS
BIG SUR homeowner Bill Burleighwould have been forgiven for feel-ing discouraged after watching his
dream home burn down in the 2008 BasinComplex Fire.
But instead of feeling sorry for himself, the retired judge and founder of the Big SurInternational Marathon wasted no timebefore launching into the planning processfor his next dream home in the exact spotwhere the earlier one once stood.
“I started the process of rebuildingbefore the embers of the fire died,” Burleighexplained.
And less than two years after the blazedestroyed his first Big Sur home, Burleighstood on the deck of his new home andlooked out a familiar sight — an unob-structed bird’s eye view of Point Sur, whichis located eight miles to the north along thecoast.
Love at first sightBurleigh’s introduction to Big Sur came
in 1961. “I was in law school and I had abreak,” he recalled. “My wife and I decidedto see what Carmel looked like. We took adrive down the coast to Big Sur, and it’sbeen a love affair ever since.”
A decade after his first journey downHighway 1, Burleigh was ready to make BigSur his home. He found the perfect locationalong the Coast Ridge Road, just a shortdistance past the Ventana Inn. Situatedabout 1,700 feet above sea level — and 700
feet above the resort — the property offeredpanoramic views of Big Sur Valley, the PostRanch and Point Sur. “We bought the landin 1973,” he explained. “It took us two yearsto get the permits and build our originalcabin. That house was finished in 1975.”
For more than three decades, Burleighenjoyed the view from his eagle’s perchabove Ventana, but all that came to anabrupt end in June 2008, when a bolt oflightning touched down on Grimes Point, about three miles south of Burleigh’s home. The spark ignited a blaze that eventuallywould merge with another fire, consumingmore than 250,000 acres and destroying 26homes.
“I got a call from Ventana saying a dan-gerous fire was coming our way,” he remem-bered. “My partner and I went down thereto monitor the fire, but nature was biggerthan both of us.”
Before the ashes cooledSifting through the remnants of his for-
mer home, Burleigh resolved to rebuildimmediately.
“I was anxious to get back there,” he said.“That’s where my heart is. It’s my favoriteplace in world.”
To help expedite his return to Big Sur,Burleigh hired designer Denis Wagner andcontractor Bill Aspinwall.
“Denis did a brilliant job,” he suggested.“I told him what I wanted and he created

sive than the former one. “I had code upgrade insurance on the first house,” he said.
“Thirty-five years ago, we didn’t need an engineer. This houserequired six engineers to build. The code upgrade policy paidfor them and all their materials involved in bringing the houseup to current building standards. This was a major part of thecost of the project. It’s a very important part of your insurancepolicy.”
Overall costs for the new project, Burleigh said, came to$420 per square foot. His old home cost just $93 per squarefoot.
The tax assessor is lending a hand, too. Before the fire, hisproperty taxes were about $3,400 a year. After the houseburned, they were reduced to $2,400 a year. Now, the taxes willbe raised back to the $3,400 level, Burleigh suggested. But if hehad built the new home without the old one being destroyed, the new taxes would have been closer to $10,000 each year.
A second honeymoonThe new home received its final OK from the county build-
ing department in April — one year after the contractor brokeground on the project. Understandably excited, Burleigh was

this wonderful design. He incorporated everything I wantedinto it.”
Burleigh conceded, though, that Wagner’s work created a lotof extra work for Aspinwall and his crew.
“It was huge challenge to build,” he said. “I don’t care muchfor right angles and neither did the designer. The house has a lotof curves in it. I’m a contractor’s nightmare.”
In the effort to rebuild his home, Burleigh received a bigassist from the Monterey County Building Department.
“The county was very good to the people who lost theirhomes in the fire,” he observed. “They waived fees and gave ustop priority.”
Burleigh’s insurance company, meanwhile, lived up to itsmotto, “State Farm is there.”
“They were really good to me,” he noted. “I couldn’t havedone anything without them.”
Specifically, Burleigh was able to take advantage of his codeupgrade policy to build a new house which is much more expen-

ready to move in that night. “I had my toothbrush in my car,” helaughed.
Burleigh’s new home, which occupies the same building padas his former house, was built to stand for a long time.
“I think it will outlast everybody,” he predicted. “It’s wellengineered and it’s well insulated. It has real walls and realfloors, and there’s steel everywhere. Because of the new buildingcodes, the footings are 4 feet wide, 6 feet deep and made of steeland concrete. And it’s as fire-resistant as a home can be.”
The new house is also energy-efficient, Burleighexplained.“It has radiant heaters, and it’s plumbed for solarenergy. It has double-pane tinted windows and 7 inches of insu-lation in the roof.”
Most of all, though, the new house feels like home. Adorningits walls are colorful Big Sur landscapes by Erin Gafill and CeliaSanborn, which complement Burleigh’s striking photographs ofBig Sur landscapes. Meanwhile, curiosities like a petrified woodsink (“It’s possibly the only one in the world,” he suggested.)and an antique trash compactor add an eclectic and personaltouch to the decor.
“I love it,” he added. “I wouldn’t trade it for any house in thecountry.”

Eco Carmel: CHS grad goes green ... and then some
Kristi Reimers looks right at home in her new store, Eco Carmel. And she should, consid-ering she’s thoroughly researched every product her San Carlos Street shop carries.
By MARY BROWNFIELD
IN SELECTING items to sell in her newbusiness, Eco Carmel, Kristi Reimersdidn’t simply look for interesting, envi-
ronmentally friendly products that would bepopular with customers. Instead, she consid-ered every aspect of every single one from sev-eral environmental angles before decidingwhether she wanted to carry it.
As a result, the shop, which opened inAugust on San Carlos Street in downtownCarmel, is stocked with green products inwhich she’s entirely confident — and whichare not available everywhere else.
“I’ve always loved natural health and greenliving, and I’ve always wanted my own busi-ness in something to do with that,” saidReimers, who grew up in Carmel. A year ago, inthe midst of a recession, she decided to takethe plunge and began researching how to opena store that would do well in a down economy,
embody her passion for the environment andallow her to give back to the community.
“I had it in my head that I wanted to be agreen hub and basically have everything,” shesaid. But she didn’t want to compete withother sellers of environmentally friendly prod-ucts, such as Passion Purveyors, which sup-plies packaging and foodservice materials torestaurants and markets.
As a result, Reimers’ store specializes inpaint, hardware, fixtures, cleaning and garden-ing supplies, mattresses and pillows, babyproducts and other eco-friendly items. Shescrutinizes everything for its durability, price, sustainability, recyclability, low carbon foot-print, ingredients and toxins, and the amountof water/energy/resources used in its manu-facturing. She also considers how the peoplemaking the product are treated, how it com-

pares with similar products, and how it reduces energy andwater use or cuts VOC and toxins.
Reimers is thrilled with what she’s found, evidenced by theexcitement in her voice as she extolled the virtues of the onlyorganic mattresses available on the Monterey Peninsula and thepaints that aren’t just free of volatile organic compounds, but ofcarcinogens, too.
“Yes, they are eco-friendly, but they are also things that real-ly work,” she said.
She mentioned garden supplies that benefit plants via theirroot systems, cleaning products with all organic ingredientsthat are highly concentrated as well as effective — and enoughitems for babies that an expectant mother recently completedan entire baby-shower registry at Eco Carmel.
“I use all of the products,” Reimers said of the items she car-ries, and she mentioned a few of her favorites. Fire & LightOriginals is a partnership with the Arcata CommunityRecycling Center that produces glassware from recyclables. Theabsorbent and reusable People Towel replaces 17 rolls of waste-ful paper towels. A gadget called the Kill A Watt can be pluggedinto any outlet to show how much energy an appliance con-sumes, even when it’s not being used. A low-flow shower headstill manages to offer a luxurious dousing.
“Each product has a great, unique story to it.” she added.Reimers also created a system to cut down on customers’ use
of bags while benefitting environmental nonprofits.“We encourage people to not take a bag or to use their own
bags, so we charge 25 cents per bag, like they do in Europe,” shesaid. “And if people choose not to take a bag, then we give thema little wooden token that says, ‘25 cents,’ on it.”
The customer drops the token into one of three bins bearingthe names of environmental charities, and Reimers donates themonetary equivalent quarterly. Right now, the bag saving israising money for Save Our Shores, the Carmel RiverConservancy and StepUp2Green, though Reimers plans to fea-ture other charities from time to time.
“It’s been such a success, I think we’ve only used about 15bags in the last month-and-a-half,” she said. “I’ve had a coupleof shop owners ask if they could steal the idea. I hope everybody

steals this idea.”Eco Carmel is not just a store, but a resource center for any-
one seeking information on living a greener life, in any respect, according to Reimers.
“I have plenty of things, but also I have connections to
whomever is doing the green building in town or the greenpainting in town,” she said. “When someone walks into the

created several paintings that hang in the hotel.“Carmel was the world renowned artist and writ-
ers’ colony, and this was in keeping with the artistictheme of the town,” Theis said. “Carmel also has areally European feel, and Hofsas House blends in withthat.”
Two coats of arms grace the street-side of the hotel, and those were designed by Fred Hofsas, who “hadsome artistic background” as a photographer, accord-ing to Theis. Its symbols represent hospitality andCarmel in the form of a key, an outstretched hand, acypress tree and a fireplace. The Latin motto reads,“Leisure with dignity,” she said.
The Hofsases soon divorced, and Donna Hofsasretained the business — a somewhat unusual situa-tion for the times.
In the 1960s, when Theis was living in ManhattanBeach with her family, they would come up during thesummers to visit.
“I always had some type of affinity with the hotel. At age 8, I would take guests to their rooms, and evenyounger than that, I would sit in the lobby,” Theissaid.
She and her grandmother were very close, “and Iknew one day I would come to Carmel and run thehotel, because it’s really in my heart,” she continued.“I worked with her in the summers, and she and Iwould run around town together. I learned the busi-ness from her.”
In the mid-1960s, Hofsas added another hotelwing on the north side of the property that containslarge rooms, many of them an unusually luxurious900 square feet. A pool and meeting room had beenconstructed earlier.
In high school, Theis and her family moved to
Saratoga, and she continued spending her summersworking in Carmel.
“I did everything, from maid work, to front desk, and of course she had a vision for the hotel, and shealways extended herself,” Theis recalled. “I have peoplewho come back today who knew her and rememberwhat a dynamic woman she was, and that she wasalways hospitable.”
In the mid-1960s, Hofsas commissioned RalphStean to design an unusual house for the property. Itsroof is an “hyperbolic parabaloid.”
“It’s very unusual,” she said of the house, the roof ofwhich is visible from the surrounding hotel. “Becauseit’s not exactly a Carmel cottage, it took several yearsfor the planning commission to finally OK it.”
Hofsas lived in the house until she passed away in1981, and Theis and her family live there, now.
After Hofsas died, she left her share of the hotel toTheis and her brother, Scott. Their dad had helpedpurchased the land for the north wing, so he wasalready involved, and he ran the hotel until he died in1996. He left his share to Theis’ mother, Doris, whostill helps at the Hofsas House.
Theis — who was living in Stockton, had obtaineda master’s degree in biology, was skilled in computersand had worked for the state — took over full-timeoperation of the hotel a decade ago.
“You have to like people to be in this business,” shesaid. “You have to like taking care of people and want-ing to make them happy.”
And she enjoys the help of her mother and brother.“She’s really good about decorating and color,” she
said of Doris. And of her brother, “He has an engineering back-
ground, which is really helpful, because we have beenconstantly doing something: roofing, rebuilding stairs, making repairs....”
Theis said she is “living a dream,” continuing thevision and business her grandmother launched andworked so hard to grow. “It’s in my heart that way, andI love it.”

Amazing, colorful garden in the midst of fog and drought■ Succulents are hearty alternative
By KELLY NIX
THOSE WHO live in foggy and chilly Pacific Groveknow that cultivating a garden there can be a chal-lenge. If the fog and lack of rainfall don’t stop your
plants from growing, the deer will eat them when they do.But one P.G. man has shown that, with a little dedication, it’s
actually not that difficult to have a colorful, robust and exoticgarden.
Tom Kester, a hair designer who lives with his partner, EarlViau, in a house on Asilomar Boulevard, decided about six yearsago to plant succulents.
“I want people to know that anybody’s succulent garden canbe as beautiful as mine,” Kester told The Pine Cone. “And it canbe low, low, low maintenance, even for somebody without agreen thumb.”
Kester’s garden is full of aeonium, sedum, echevarria andother colorful succulent varieties Kester said are almost self-maintaining.
“They require the least care, and they have the biggest visualimpact,” he said.
Kester’s fascination for succulent plants began in his teens. “I began loving succulents about 30 years ago,” he said. “I’m
47 now. Something just drew me to them.”Today, Kester’s garden is full of exotic-looking plants that
look like they should be in a tropical rainforest, not the often-
their thick leaves that retain water. In fact, one of the problems that beginning succulent gar-
deners run into is that they are too fussy with the plants andover water.
“When in doubt, if you arenot sure you should water, let itgo for a while,” Bloss said.
There are lots of varieties ofsucculents out there, butKester and Bloss said justabout anything offered at localstores and nurseries will workon the Monterey Peninsula.
The best thing to do is tak-ing the plants out of their orig-inal container and put theminto another pot, or in theground, with good soil.
“If you put them in a yard and have a clay soil, you want toadd drainage material,” such as such as pumice or pearlites,Bloss said.
Before planting the succulents in his garden, Kester installedweedcloth to prevent weeds from growing around the plants.
Kester also surrounded the plants with river rocks, whichnot only look great, but discourage weeds and provide drainage.
dreary P.G. One of the nice things about succulents is they can also work
for those who don’t have a large garden. There are tiny succu-lent plants that can fit into small vases, planters, boxes andpots. There are even frames that fit onto a wall that hold theplants.
Kester has many small vases and boxes of small, multicol-ored succulents on the porch of his house. Some of the smallervarieties look like sea anemones or other tidepool creatures.
“You can have a small space and grow them,” he said. “Youcan do it with a 1-foo-by-1-foot area. It can be minimal.”
Succulent Gardens in Castroville — where Kester hasobtained lots of plants and advice — sells vertical frames thatcan be mounted to the wall for “living pictures,” and wreathsmade of succulents. They can also be grown inside.
Succulent Gardens’ owner Robin Stockwell on his websitesays, “Succulents are the conservationists of the plant world.”And that’s another reason Kester was drawn to the plants.
“We wanted something that was drought-resistant but hadmaximum [visual] impact,” Kester said.
Perfect for the PeninsulaMonterey Bay Area Cactus & Succulent Society past presi-
dent Naomi Bloss told The Pine Cone succulents are an idealplant for the Monterey Peninsula’s mild weather.
“They adapt very well to our climate, for the most part,”Bloss said.
And they even get along with the water shortage, thanks to

They also act as natural climate control.“If it’s hot, like Carmel Valley in the summer, the
rocks help keep the soil cool,” Bloss explained. “Andin the winter, the rocks keep the soil a little warmer.”
Though succulents are exotic in appearance and
have the look of pricey plants, they are extremely rea-sonable in cost. Kester said he doesn’t often spendmore than $10 to $15.
“They are not expensive, and you can take cut-tings of most of them and grow more,” Bloss said.
Kester hopes more would-be gardeners on theMonterey Peninsula consider succulents as an alter-native to other plants.
“If you just plant a few succulents and put outsome rocks, they can be unusual and beautiful,” hesaid.

Tom Kester’s fascination with suc-culents began when he was ayoung man. Now, he has a won-derful garden full of them at hishome near the ocean. The plants, which look like they could onlysurvive in tropical rainforestsbecause of their intense colorsand exotic shapes, were pur-chased locally for reasonableprices. Kester (right) is trying tospread the word that anybody, even those with little space, canhave a succulent garden.
