THIS PAST Monday I sat at the table outside one of myfavorite coffee houses, the Carmel Coffee and Cocoa Bar inCarmel Plaza. I was in the company of four gentlemenfriends, drinking coffee and enjoying the weather and thebeauty of the locale.

One of the gentlemen asked me what my column wasgoing to be about this week.

“I haven’t a clue,” I replied. They all laughed, not quitebelieving me. But I was telling the truth. I told them I hadseveral ideas but nothing was coming together.

Our meeting was not by chance. We meet most Mondaymornings, depending on weather and health. I mention

health, because our combined ages would surpass 400 years,so we are all subject to felonious ailments, which we hope wecan plea bargain down to misdemeanors.

Our conversations cover a myriad of topics — local, inter-national, historical, you name it. Whatever the conversations, though, the fact we are having them, and conducting themwith civility is worth mentioning. If you subtracted our com-bined ages from the current year, 2015, you would place usin the 17th century.

This is important because a couple of columns ago I said:Social cultural critic, Steve Johnson, writes, “the Englishcoffeehouse was crucial to the development and spread ofone of the great intellectual flowerings of the last 500 years, what we now call the Enlightenment.”

It is almost impossible for anyone who writes a column ona regular basis to resist the urge to moralize. The undeniablefact that most persons detest being preached to is a naturaldeterrent against giving in to the urge. One covers oneself byclaiming to be an observer of the human condition, simplycommenting on the failures and foibles of society by actingas a style guru — an arbiter of propriety.

Therefore, at the risk of sounding like Mr. Manners, today’s lesson is on charm. Charm is an elusive quality thatis difficult to define but is noticeably in short supply in ourhigh-tech society. Charm has several synonyms, such asallure, charisma and magnetism, but none quite capture theessence of the word.

I like Sir James Barrie’s definition: “Charm is that which,if a woman has it, she doesn’t need anything else; and if shedoesn’t have it, nothing else helps.”

I have always equated charm with impeccable manners, soI attribute the lack of charm in our world to the disintegrationof good manners. I cannot pinpoint the exact date in history

their heads in their Apples. There is no WiFi at the Carmel Coffee House and Cocoa

Bar. People sit and talk to one another. They comport them-selves in a mannerly fashion. The place is dripping withcharm.

Barrie’s definition was exemplified by a couple of movieactors of my era, Fred Astaire and Cary Grant. Charmseemed to emanate from Astaire as effortlessly as he glidedacross the floor when he was dancing. Even when he wasn’tdancing his movements were so stylish that he made lightinga cigarette as graceful as a ballerina doing a port de bras.Cary Grant had an aura so pleasing that he was almostimpossible to dislike. Both had that indefinable je ne saisquoi. Charm was so intrinsic in them that it never needed tobe asserted.

There is not an Astaire or Grant among our little coffeeklatch. (Ouch, I can hear them complaining now.) Yet all areinteresting, affable, and able to converse in a mannerly andcharming way about topics that can alter and illuminate ourtimes. And they’re pretty good at helping someone write acolumn, too.

Jerry Gervase can be contacted [email protected].

Coffee at Carmel Plaza with a visit from Mr. Mannerswhen good manners began their slide down the list of attrib-utes desirable to possess. Perhaps it was August 1969, whenhalf a million uninvited guests dropped in on a dairy farmnear Woodstock, N.Y., introducing us to a counterculture thatbelieved in “free everything,” except the freedom to bathe.

Last week, Starbucks’ CEO, Howard Schultz, asked baris-tas to write the words, “Race Together,” on customers’ coffeecups in the hopes of engendering conversations about racerelations in the U.S.

Comedians, along with serious media outlets, treated Mr.Schultz in a most unmannerly way. He was criticized exten-sively. I believe Mr. Schultz had a good idea. Why not havecoffee houses be the place where important issues are dis-cussed with the same fervor they were in the 1650s?

Most baristas are way too busy to engage customers inanything more than friendly morning chitchat. Race relationsare a difficult subject, but why can’t customers who don’thave to grab their java and run to their cars sit and talk tosomeone about something important?

If Starbucks’ CEO wanted us to converse about importantsocial issues while in one of his establishments, he shouldhave done away with free WiFi, which would get customerstalking to each other rather than having sitting there with

Coldwell Banker DelMonte’s office at501 Lighthouse indowntown PacificGrove (right) hasbeen extensively ren-ovated, even as thecompany preparesto relocate its Mouthof the Valley officeto updated newdigs at 126 ClockTower Place.

MAJOR CONGRATULATIONS are in order for TimAllen at Coldwell Banker Del Monte — he’s been named thetop realtor in Northern California! Allen’s $157.6 million insales for 2014 surpassed 3,900 other agents from Montereyto Lake Tahoe for the honor. The kudos didn’t stop there, either. Allen also ranked number three out of 86,000 agentsfor Coldwell Banker in this country and around the world. In

fact, Allen has ranked among the top Coldwell Banker agentsworldwide since 1997.

Coldwell Banker President Mike James called Allen, “oneof the most talented and respected luxury real estate profes-sionals in the industry,” and local manager Todd Porteousreferred to him as “the ultimate professional.”

Allen was recognized at a company ceremony earlier thisyear and has been invited to attend the brokerage’s Top 1Percent Retreat at Pelican Hill Resort in Newport Beach.

Top achievers honored, big numbers tossed around and technology installed In addition to Allen’s honors, Porteous noted that the com-

pany has renovated its offices at 501 Lighthouse and had aribbon cutting on March 10 to celebrate. Also, they’re mov-ing from their Via Nona Marie office at the mouth of CarmelValley to 126 Clock Tower Place — a location Porteous saidwas “gutted to the studs” and has undergone a major trans-formation with plenty of spiffy technology to supportCBDMR’s more than 130 agents in the area.

They’re not the only agency with bragging rights thisweek, though. Sotheby’s is rightfully proud of its own JanetReilly, who’s been promoted from brokerage manager to sen-ior vice president of the firm’s four local offices. Reilly’s pro-motion came after she led her team to a 100 percent increasein closed sales since 2010. Sotheby’s said her leadershipattracted numerous other agents, leading to a 37 percentincrease overall. She was also credited with the acquisitionsof Bratty & Bluhm and John Saar.

“Janet is a deeply respected and seasoned real estate pro-fessional with 35 years’ experience in the business,” saidFrank Symons, Executive Vice President and ChiefOperating Officer of the Western Region of Sotheby’sInternational Realty.
