‘Yakety yak’ — Junipero Serra School alums do talk backPERHAPS SOME of the girls in the

1958 8th grade class at Junipero SerraSchool were agog over Elvis Presley’s induc-tion into the U.S. Army. Maybe some of theboys were knee-deep in excitement about theSan Francisco Giants’ 8-0 victory over theLos Angeles Dodgers in the season opener atSeals Stadium. Maybe their parents wereconcerned about the arms race that was infull swing between Moscow andWashington.

Regardless of what was going on in theworld, Victoria Smiser (nee Hutchison), whonow lives in San Francisco, remembers the1950s as a safe and innocent time to grow upin Carmel.

Victoria was one of the eight members ofthe 1958 graduating class of Carmel’sJunipero Serra School who gathered atCasanova Restaurant for a reunion this pastColumbus Day. Back in 1958 a postagestamp was four cents, gas was about 24 centsa gallon — and tuition at JSS was $10 persemester, payable in advance.

“Children walked to and from school,carried armloads of books from the library,

and sold Girl Scout cookies door to door,”Victoria said. “We had a carefree childhoodand were able to explore our charming citywithout fear.”

Of course, Carmel is just as safe today.But life has changed and the realities oftoday’s more dangerous world have causedparents to be more cautious.

The one place the eighth graders from1958 remember being in physical dangerwas at school — because the nuns were firmbelievers in corporal punishment as a formof discipline.

Alex Robison remembers that SisterMary Vincent used her wooden ruler like aterrible swift sword.

“She would lash out with it and rap ourknuckles if we misbehaved. But I think itwas just the boys who were on the receivingend. And the nuns used clickers with aban-don to control the students.”

Victoria remembers that one click was thesignal to stand. Two clicks might mean to sitback down.

“The clickers were very effective,” shesaid. “Oh, and I remember how the nuns had

outside of school. Many of us hadn’t seeneach other since graduation. Yet our liveshave remained intertwined because of ourcommon experiences such as the green uni-

forms and the beanies. And we all playedvolleyball. It was wonderful to get togetheragain.”

Along with Victoria Smiser, AlexandraRobison was one of the driving forces in get-ting everyone together.

“Organization is my forte,” she said.From her home in Madrid Spain, she mailedhand-written invitations to people who didn’thave email. The whole process took aboutseven months to put together.

“I remember playing King of the

Homework was a fact of life in 1958,though no one remembered being overbur-dened with it. The studentsunderstood that much wasexpected of them at JSS, bytheir parents as well as theteachers.

They didn’t think thatsmoking was an issue amongeighth graders in 1958. Itbecame more of one in high school.However, everyone’s parents smoked. It was-n’t until 1964 that the Surgeon Generalissued his warnings on smoking being haz-ardous.

In 1958 no one had to worry about textingand driving. There were no cell phones andthe Internet didn’t exist. So plain old tele-phones were the standard method of keepingin touch after school.

“We didn’t even have a telephone,” TinaDominici said. “My mother didn’t drive.Sunday mass was a real community gather-ing place where we could all see each other

teachers, especially Sister Kathleen Marie,and Sister Mary Timothy.”

The mission was still undergoing restora-tion while the class of 1958 was at JSS.Everyone remembers Harry Downie totingadobe bricks in his wheelbarrow.

“He wore an old felt hat pushed back onhis head,” said Charlotte Wilgress. “I remem-ber the beauty of the mission and the sur-rounding courtyard, and the freedom we hadto explore it all.”

Charlotte is the one Junipero Serra studentwho has lived off the grid since graduation.She resides on Lummi Island, Wash., a smallisland at the southwest corner of WhatcomCounty that’s home to about a thousand resi-dents. Her family moved there in 1966.

“We raised much of our own food, milkedJersey cows and built our own home, whichtook about a dozen years. There were only

150 residents when we arrived there,” shesaid.

Constance remembered the wonderful, butsmall, library, along with the cold bathroom.

“There were magnificent gardens in thecourtyard between the school and the church.And singing at midnight mass is such a beau-tiful memory,” she said. “We used to baby sitfor tourists at the hotels and motels for 75cents an hour.” Later she worked at Em Lee’sas a waitress.

All the girls knew former mayor SueMcLoud’s mother, Gladys, who had a girls’and teens’ shop on Dolores near Ocean. In1951, Constance bought two blouses, a beret,and a jumper for $13.67.

The graduates all agreed that Carmelremains clean and familiar after the passageof so much time.

“It’s still a magical place,” said Victoria.

“It is easy to see why it always attracted somany talented people. But in the old days, itwas a real community. The people who livedhere actually lived here.

“It was a very precious time,” said Tina.“It was an idyllic childhood. This reunion hasmade me stop and reflect on who we are,where we are in life, and where we aregoing.”

The class of 1958 has moved on, ofcourse, and some of them have suffered dur-ing their adult lives.

But they all benefited because they stud-ied at a school that “instills in our studentsthe confidence to face challenges and suc-ceed in an ever-changing world.” Andthey’ve carried with them those tart valuesthat are the essence of character.

Constance Cate lives in Santa Barbara.Her parents started Cate Electrical Companyin 1960.

The company, on Dolores Street, is still inthe family and won a 2014 Golden Pine Conefor Best Electrician.

“I used to take horseback riding lessonsfrom Betty Greene, who had a stable onJunipero right downtown. I remember the
