DID YOU know that Ernest Hemingway stayed at (andfamously enjoyed the charms of) Monterey’s Del MonteHotel during the Roaring Twenties? And that is not his onlyconnection to the Monterey Peninsula.

In the novel, “The Sun Also Rises,” this paragraphappears while Hemingway is writing about the backgroundof Robert Cohn (the character played by Mel Ferrer in themovie):

“The divorce was arranged and Robert Cohn went out tothe Coast. In California he fell among literary people and, ashe still had a little of the fifty thousand left, in a short time hewas backing a review of the Arts. The review commenced

publication in Carmel, California, and finished inProvincetown, Massachusetts.”

Did Hemingway have any other connections to Carmel?Probably not, but isn’t it pretty to think so?

July is my own personal Ernest Hemingway month. Hewas born on July 21, and died by his own hand on July 2. TheSan Fermin Fiesta in Pamplona, Spain, where the famousrunning of the bulls takes place, runs from July 6 – 14. It wascelebrated in “The Sun Also Rises.”

I’m a huge fan for many reasons. The reading ofHemingway novels was de rigueur when I was young. Morethan a dozen movies I’ve enjoyed during my life were basedupon his books. I fell madly in love with Lady Brett when Iread “The Sun Also Rises,” and then madder in love with AvaGardner, who was perfect for the role when the movie wasmade in 1957.

I loved Hemingway’s sparse, simple writing style, andeven once entered a “Bad Hemingway Writing Contest” witha story, “Un-moveable Fiesta,” about my Ford compact thatnever ran very well.

“Today is Friday,” the doctor said, “Why do you ask?”“The soldier and the girl reminded me of when I was in

another country. I met some summer people on a Friday. Agirl was with them. It was the last good country I was in.” Hisvoice trailed off as the memory left him.

“I guess everything reminds you of something,” the doctorsaid to break the silence. The old man did not answer.Perhaps I should get a seeing-eyed dog, he was thinking. Aseeing-eyed dog would be a good thing to have.

Did you recognize them all? In that case, congratulations!You get an “A” in 20th Century American Literature.

The sun also rises on the old man and his columnBut now, I’ve decided to go one better. To express my

admiration for this great American writer, I’ve written a storythat’s not only in his style, it contains 22 of his short storytitles. See how many you can find.

It was late. The shop was empty except for the old man.He sat in the shadow where the light from the glass cases didnot reach. Outside, the three-day blow left the street dustyand dark. The old man liked to sit inside this shop. A clean,well-lighted place was good for his failing eyesight.

The old man was like the clothes he wore, out of date, outof season. He sat patiently waiting with the doctor and thedoctor’s wife. It was late. He knew they wanted to go home.They would not close up until someone from the soldier’shome came for the old man.

The old man was used to waiting. It was a day’s wait justto get someone to take him to the optical shop. Sometimes hewould complain with little sympathy from anyone. Being oldis a banal story, one that is not popular with the current gen-eration.

Young people did like to wait. They believed theydeserved everything now. The old man did not have muchwaiting time left. Young people thought nobody ever dies.

The door opened and a cold wind raked the old man likea cross-country snow. A girl and a soldier came into the shop.The lights shone on the brass buttons of his uniform. To theold man, the uniform looked like one the revolutionist worewhen he fought in Spain. The girl wore no head covering. Sherubbed against the soldier when they walked.

“We are closed,” said the doctor’s wife.“I know,” the soldier said, “I have a simple enquiry.”“Yes, go on.”“Is there a Chinese restaurant nearby?”“Yes, cross the street. At the corner turn right. You will see

it. It is called ‘The Good Lion.’”“Is it really good?”“Take one trip across the street and you will find out.”The girl and the soldier left. The old man heard them

laugh. It was a laugh that did not foretell good times. Theylaughed like it was the end of something. The old man knew

Carmel-by-the-Sea: A records check on a vehicle in the areaof Del Mar revealed it was stolen. The vehicle was recovered, andthe owner was notified.

Pacific Grove: Dispatch reported a possible burglary at a res-idence on Willow Street at 0200 hours. The resident came homeafter being out and noticed that the lights were on in her bed-room, and the window was open. The resident said she left therear door open so her dog could come and go. Officers clearedthe home upon arrival and no evidence of a break-in was foundat the scene.

Pacific Grove: Resident said that on June 26 underage drink-ing took place at a home on 17 Mile Drive, with an adult onscene condoning the activity. Resident requested the officer con-tact the adult and admonish him regarding the noise ordinance.The officer called the resident by phone and left a voicemailadvising him of the ordinance, as well as advising him of thereport of underage drinking.
