MARKETUPDATEApril continued to build momentumacross both Pebble Beach and Carmelwith 18 closed escrows and 20 new sales.Velocity in Pebble Beach continues to bedominated by the MPCC area, accountingfor approximately 70% of all activity inPebble. Inventory below $1.5M in PebbleBeach continues to dwindle with just 13properties currently listed in that bracket, down considerably from the 35 that werelisted in the second quarter of 2013. TheCarmel market is the tightest we’ve seenin several years with just 37 currentlylisted in the Golden Rectangle andCarmel Point. Demand for newer construction is particularly strong rightnow in Carmel with an average days onmarket of just 54 days. Somewhat surprisingly, there aren’t any Carmel listings above $8M currently – somethingthat hasn’t happened in over 5 years. For further market commentary, please visit

Hospice Foundation: Reminding us that at the end no one should go it aloneI HAVE not seen the movie, “Heaven is

for Real,” so I do not know whether it provesthe existence of paradise. I do know that it isinevitable that someday each of us will findout. I also know that End-of-Life issues arenot commonly discussed among familymembers. And I know from personal experi-ence that they should be.

“We are in a unique position to be part ofa community-wide dialogue on end of lifeissues,” Siobhan Greene told me when I vis-ited her at the Monterey Hospice Foundationoffices on Garden Court. Siobhan is thepresident and CEO of the HospiceFoundation, an organization I didn’t knowexisted until recently.

“That is a problem,” she admitted.

“People don’t know we exist.”Of course, people know about hospices.

However, many don’t know that there is afoundation behind a network of hospice carein our area.

Simply put, the foundation raises money, grants money, and focuses on end-of-lifecare. On a much deeper level, when youcombine the principles, support, and ideas ofa foundation with a community of peoplewith common interests, the HospiceFoundation is more richly defined.

“Aside from fundraising, education is animportant element of what we do,” Siobhantold me. “People have options with regardsto hospice care. They are eligible for sixmonths of hospice services,” another fact I

the Central Coast HIV/AIDS Services,Jacob’s Heart Children’s Cancer SupportServices, the Central Coast Visiting NurseAssociation and Coastal Kids Home Care.

The foundation lets donors know that it isa good steward of the monies it receives. It

has comprehensive assessment and vettingprocedures. Siobhan showed me figuresindicating the amount of money that wentout in the form or grants and awards waspretty close to the amount that came in.

The Hospice Foundation’s majorfundraiser will occur next September. However, one of the group’s more popularfundraisers, the Big Spring Raffle, is under-way and runs until May 8. The Grand Prizeis three nights in a house at Northstar, LakeTahoe, that sleeps 12, plus $500 cash.

There are also wonderful getaway pack-ages (each valued at $300 or more) offered. One includes an overnight stay for two atRipplewood Resort in Big Sur, a $100 giftcertificate from Nepenthe, and breakfast atDeetjen’s Big Sur Inn.

There’s also an overnight stay for two atthe Monterey Bay Inn, two tickets to theMonterey Bay Aquarium, plus a $50 gift cer-tificate for Alvarado Fish & Steak House.

And there’s an overnight stay and break-fast for two at Carmel Valley Lodge, plus a$50 gift certificate from Quail & Olive.

Raffle tickets are reasonably priced at$10, and at even lower prices when pur-chased in multiples. A form for orderingtickets and more information is available onthe foundation’s website: www.hospicegiv-ing.org.

Is heaven for real? Please support a localorganization that can ease your way intofinding out.

Jerry Gervase can be contacted [email protected].

did not know.“People have the right to ease into the

end-of-life process so that the entire proce-dure is more peaceful,” she continued. “Weencourage families to have more thoughtfulconversations regarding end-of-life issues.”

When she used the phrase– “We take the messy stuff outof it” – I knew exactly whatshe meant. My own experi-ence with hospice was not in afacility such as WestlandHouse, but with in-home hos-pice service, which is themore common experience that people have.

Anyone who has gone through the finalweeks, days, and hours of a loved one’s lifeknows how confusing and chaotic that periodcan be. One should never go through thatalone.

Even with other family members present, nobody is experienced enough to handle allthe situations that can arise. Situations suchas medications, dosages of medications, changing medications, ordering hospitalgrade paraphernalia, and professionallymonitoring the physical changes a dying per-son goes through. So much. So much.

This is when hospice personnel shouldtake over — not in the sense they shunt youaside. On the contrary, hospice personnel arethe most caring, understanding, compassion-ate people I have ever met. But they do take“the messy stuff away from you.”

“People need to know the breadth of serv-ices we offer. We encourage better familyplanning along with more meaningful dis-cussions among family members of end-of-life care,” Siobhan said.

All of this takes money So, of course, another important function of the HospiceFoundation is to raise funds for all that theydo. The money the foundation receivestouches many lives.

Among hospice services are children’send-of-life care, grief and bereavementcounseling, hospice care, family supportservices, palliative care, and communityeducation. Grants are given for specialtygroups such as the Alzheimer Association,

The Perfect Place To Play A Round

Preferred Properties

If walls could talk they might tell you about the legendary parties in this house hosted by Sam Morse,Bing Crosby and their cronies back in “the era”. In the early 1990s this home received a complete remodel down to the studs. It was rebuilt emulating the same classic architecture of the original 1928home, including hand-plastered walls, arched hallways and windows, coved ceilings, wood and tileflooring. Enjoy the romance and architecture of the era without the worries and surprises often associated with maintaining these vintage homes. The home and rear yard are filled with warmth and sunshine due to the south facing exposure. All this, plus the home backs to the 18th fairway at Monterey Peninsula Country Club. Ace! $1,850,000
