IT IS almost impossible for anyone who writes a columnon a regular basis to resist the urge to moralize. Most peopledetest being preached to, which usually is enough to deter mefrom giving in to the urge, but sometimes I cover myself byclaiming to be an observer of the human condition who issimply commenting on the failures and foibles ofsociety. However, even those flowery terms do not hide thefact that every once in while I hang the consequences and getup on my soapbox and preach. Therefore, today’s sermon ison charm and good manners.
I was motivated to take on the subject after watching theU.S. Open on Father’s Day. Not only was I Lord of the Manor,I was Lord of the Remote, wielding it like a scepter andexerting my control of all things televised.
Part of golf’s uniqueness and charm is that the spectatorsare on the playing field. They line the fairways and greens,becoming part of the action when an errant shot sails intothem, whereby they scatter, then surround the dimpled golfball and stare at it with reverence that should be reserved forthe Holy Grail.
I believe that golf spectators, once the most polite in all ofsports, have lost much of the respect for the game that used
is noticeably in short supply in our high-tech society. Allure,charisma, and magnetism are adjectives used to definecharm. But no description quite captures the essence of theword as does Sir James Barrie’s definition: “Charm is thatwhich, if a woman has it, she doesn’t need anything else; andif she doesn’t have it, nothing else helps.” Sorry, guys, this isnot a male chauvinist thing — the same principle applies tomen.
Barrie’s characterization was exemplified by certainmovie personalities of my era, specifically Fred Astaire andCary Grant, Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn. Charmseemed to emanate from Astaire as effortlessly as he glidedacross the floor. Even when he wasn’t dancing, his move-ments were so stylish that he made lighting a cigarette asgraceful as a port de bras.
Grant had an aura so pleasing that he was almost impos-sible to dislike. Kelly was a Hollywood princess who becamea real princess. Hepburn was a Hollywood princess who wasso charming I always considered her to be a real princess.
I have always equated charm with impeccable manners,
A word from Mr. Manners about charm, good and bad behavior, and golfto be considered sacrosanct. This dissing of the game beganseveral years ago when unruly yahoos, seeking their 15 sec-onds of fame, began yelling, “In the hole,” when a golferstruck a putt. Now the progeny of these yahoos yell, “In thehole,” when a player tees off on a 479-yard Par 4. Therehaven’t been many holes-in-one from that distance. What
utterly boorish manners! Why do we put up with it?Shouldn’t a USGA Marshall rub the yahoo’s lips with thewire brush device golfers use to clean their cleats?
Imagine watching Act V, Scene III of “Romeo and Juliet”and some klutz yells from the balcony, “Don’t drink the poi-son, bucko, she ain’t really dead.” I think we can safely saythat such a person would be completely devoid of charm.
Charm is an elusive quality that is difficult to define but

history when good manners began their slidedown the list of attributes that are desirable topossess. Perhaps in this country it was in the1960’s when we were introduced to a counter-culture that believed in “free everything,”except the freedom to bathe.
Maybe manners began to disappear inFrance in 1789, when the revolutionists
began lopping off heads, or even earlier inhistory when the Israelites began lopping offforeskins. I like God a whole lot, but neverthought that was one of His better ideas.
Good manners really took a beating withthe introduction of the “menu system” intelephone communication. Cell phones, blue-tooth, texting and a populace wearing ear-buds to drown out the cacophony of the city— and to distance itself from the necessity ofspeaking to anyone — have made this a farless charming era than I grew up in.
The four aforementioned movie personal-ities had that je ne se quoi that made themcharming without ever needing to draw atten-tion to it.
Our society, on the other hand, recognizesassertiveness as a virtue — the kind that isexemplified by in the “I-got-mine-the-heck-with-you-in-your-face-in-the-hole” mentalityso prevalent today.
Charm and manners emanate from goodbehavior. Forgive me for the curmudgeonlystatement that many things were better whenI was young. They were. We were graded on“deportment” in both grammar and highschool. Do not think for a moment thosemarks were not scrutinized by parents asseverely as were our other grades. The pun-ishment teachers meted out for bad behaviorin school was nothing compared to what wasadministered at home when our parentsfound out about it.
I do not know why a man should removehis hat indoors, especially in a restaurant or atthe dinner table, but had I worn a hat to din-ner my father would have given me a “stinkeye” that would have soured my food.
My mother would have resorted to theFrench solution and removed my head.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Driver stopped at Highway 1 andOcean Avenue for expired registration but did not immediatelystop for police vehicle lights or siren. He was found to have asuspended license. He was cited and released.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Report of graffiti located on a publicsign near the parking area at the beach at Ocean and Del Mar.Markings were completely removable, and the sign was notdamaged. Markings did not match any known monikers.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Male said he left his laptop on top ofhis vehicle while visiting the Vista Lobos parking lot. Upon real-izing he left the laptop on the roof, he pulled over, but the laptophad already fallen off. The male wanted a report in case the lap-top was found and turned in for safekeeping.
Carmel area: Citizen reported an unknown suspect hadentered an open, unlocked patio door of a residence on CarmeloStreet and had stolen a few clothing articles.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Person found an unattended checklying on the sidewalk in front of his business at Fifth andDolores. The check was brought to the station for safekeeping.A phone number was located for the owner of the check whoconfirmed the check was for an employee who worked for theCoachman’s Inn. The employee was later contacted and came tothe PD to pick up the check. Nothing further.
Pacific Grove: Person accidentally backed into another per-son’s vehicle while at a stoplight on Forest. She started to pullover, but she saw the other person was angry, so she continuedto drive. She had her young daughter in the car, and they bothwere afraid of the male, so she continued to drive until the otherdriver stopped following her. She had contacted police. She toldpolice she was scared at the time, but admitted she was at fault.She provided all required information for exchange.
SATURDAY, JUNE 11
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Report of an intoxicated subject whotried to get into his hotel room at Lincoln and Ocean at 0049hours and smashed the window to the room. The subject left thehotel after not getting into the room, but also himself on the bro-ken window, and there was a large amount of blood at the scene.He was eventually located and treated by paramedics. He wasthen escorted back to the hotel, and no charges were desired.
