Tim Allen (831) 214-1990 • DRE#00891159 • www.TimAllenProperties.com

Written in 1987 & 1988, and previously published in The Pine Cone

We keep a little file of legendswhich we wish had happens, but didn’t.Among them is the non-visit to Carmelof SIR ARTHUR SULLIVAN on July24, 1885. He had come from London toNew York to conduct The Mikado, tofight against piracy of Gilbert andSullivan operas in the States, and princi-pally to visit the children of his deceasedbrother in Los Angeles! His train jour-ney from New York to San Franciscotook 9 days, including stops in Chicago,Iowa, Denver, Salt Lake City andSacramento. Of Iowa he wrote; Noliquors to be sold in this state. Shall notdine in Iowa.”“ He hated the food inLincoln, Nebraska; he played the organin Denver’s opera house; repeated thatimpromptu recital at the MormonTabernacle; visited Chinatown andAlcatraz in San Francisco; and took theovernight train 428 miles to L.A.Presumably he by-passed Carmel in thenight, probably a few miles inland. Weare distressed that he lacked a betterguide, especially because he did visitMadera, Fresno and Yosemite during histime in California. But maybe he wasright; we had no opera, no GoldenBough, no Sunset Center and no ForestTheatre in 1885. But what a differencehe might have made in Carmel History! His “Pirates” might have operated fromCarmel Bay instead of Penzance!

Just completed this 2945 sq. ft. home offers 4 bedrooms, 5 baths, 3 fireplaces, eat-in country kitchen with Sub Zero, Viking range andknotty alder cabinets. The home literally surrounds one with warmth and comfort. Touches such as beamed ceilings, wine cellar, lime-stone, white oak & carpeted floors, Point Lobos, Carmel River Beach and ocean-view decks and brick patio with fire-pit simply accent theultimate richness of the entire property. There is no question...”incomparable”, says it all. $4,995,000
