but my husband, Stanley, is the best support. He’s been therefor me for 37 years.”

You can tell by the way Hastings and Holly greet Debiwhen they see her that they think she is a very special person.I can only add my personal arf-firmation.

Health care delivered with a enthusiasm, unconditional love, and a cold noseTHERE ARE patients at the Community Hospital of the

Monterey Peninsula who receive treatment not covered bymost insurance plans. Not to worry, though. If your doctorjumps up on your bed and licks your face, it’s free. Such anunusual bedside manner has nothing to do with malpractice, but everything to do with pal-practice, or treatment from apatient’s best friend, a therapy dog.

CHOMP has more than 30 volunteers in its Therapy DogProgram. The dogs are vaccinated, clean, on leash, and certi-fied by Therapy Dog International. They navigate inpatient

units at the hospital and are available upon request.Debi Cassan has been in the program for about a dozen

years.“Nothing reaches people more than a dog that provides

unconditional love and is eager to please,” she said. She and her two Golden Retrievers, Hastings and Holly,

are among the 30 volunteers with f44 dogs that visit patientsat CHOMP, local hospices, and nursing homes.

“I think Golden Retrievers are the most social dogs andthey have the sweetest dispositions. But the group includesdogs of all sizes from Toy Poodles, to Mastiffs, to GreatDanes. My dogs love the program. As soon as their identifi-cation vests go on, they sense they’re going to work and getvery excited.”

Dogs in the program must complete a rigorous trainingprogram and be certified through Therapy DogsInternational.

“The dogs have to pass thirty different tests. Obediencecommands are very important, of course. They must negoti-ate an obstacle course so they can maneuver around wheelchairs and walkers,” Debi said.

The trainers do everything to startle the dogs such asdropping metal objects that make loud noises. It is importantthat the dogs remain calm throughout. Food is put down onthe floor and the dogs have to stay away from it with the com-mand, “leave it.”

The dogs must also become comfortable working withpersons who are not their owners, and they have to be goodwith children and other dogs.

Hastings is 7 years old and weighs in at 85 pounds, Hollyis 3 years old and weighs about 70 pounds. They are taken toall the floors except maternity, nurseries, or any surgicalareas. Debi and her two dogs concentrate their visits in theCancer Center.

“Naturally, not all patients want canine visitors. Some areallergic, others are simply afraid. So we always ask first,”Debi said. “Ninety percent of patients gladly welcome thedogs.”

Debi was a volunteer in a group that visited patientsin convalescent homes. Once she had a patient who hadno family and no visitors. She was unresponsive formore than six months. One day Debi saw a huge cat sit-ting on a washing machine in the facility’s laundryroom. She scooped up the cat in her arms and broughtit into the patient’s room.

“That’s one damn big cat,” the patient exclaimed. From then on she was quite responsive.

“That made me realize what a positive impact ani-mals could have on people who are ill,” Debi said.

That story is not the only reason Debi Cassan under-stands the impact animals can have on patients. Yousee, she is one of those patients, herself.

“I receive therapy here at CHOMP and then I get itat home from my dogs, too.”

Debi was diagnosed with breast cancer eleven yearsago. She underwent surgery and radiation therapy, andwas given a “cancer free card” after the treatment.

Then, in January of this year, she was diagnosedwith cancer on the other side.

“It did not metastasize,” she said. “It was a com-pletely different cancer.”

More surgery was followed by three months ofchemotherapy. She’s been receiving radiation therapyfor almost four weeks.

“The three of us, Hastings, Holly, and myself, meetcancer patients of all ages. Let’s face it. It can be a ter-rifying time for people,” she said. “Patients recognize that Iunderstand what they are going through. We can share expe-riences in a unique way.”

How are you doing, Debi?“Hey, I’m fine. I’m back to running on a regular basis. My

goal is to run in the New York City Marathon in 2015. I’verun three marathons: two Big Surs, and the Marine CorpsMarathon in Washington, D.C. And I have the best supportgroup anyone can have. I brag about my two wonderful dogs,

■ “I would like to express my appreciation for the consistently scrupulous and noteworthy editorialstandards I have been privileged to enjoy while reading The Pine Cone for the past several years.Succinct, ethical, and straightforward journalism at the local level is a thing to be celebrated in anage wherein a responsible and effective editorial hand seems to have been dismissed as an encum-brance in countless newspapers (online and otherwise) across the multimedia spectrum. One oftengets the sense that editors no longer care about the quality of their copy, and are almost cavalierabout offering us articles rife with poor spelling, grammar, and outright unethical reportage. It isindeed a sad and condescending state of affairs. Therefore, how refreshing it is to see the reliableexcellence of The Pine Cone stand as a superior, small-town counterpoint to such disturbing declineas evidenced by the blatant ineptitude of so many subpar contributors in our national news outlets. Again, Iwould like to thank you and the entire Pine Cone staff for such perennially diligent work and attention todetail. It is a pleasure to behold, a most valuable contribution to our community, and I am only too happyto actively seek-out and support your advertisers with my business whenever possible. Keep up the finework!”

■ “I want to thank you for providing our community with a real local newspaper. While I may notalways agree with all of the content, I do always enjoy reading The Pine Cone. Thanks again for keep-ing our ‘news’ small town.”

■ “I have nothing to offer as far as advice except to tell you I can’t wait until Friday to read The PineCone, and I can’t wait to read your editorials! The Pine Cone is ‘must read.’ I especially enjoy thefood/wine section, but virtually every thing you report is greatly valued by me, a life long Carmel/CarmelValley resident! Great work! Please keep doing what you are doing.”

■ “As a former editor of many years, with a few as a publisher/editor, I always like to let a colleagueknow how much I enjoy their publication, if it is worthy of such enjoyment. Yours is.”

■ “I appreciate your paper and the online format you have that let’s me browse Carmel from Sonoma where I live. I alwaysenjoy reading The Pine Cone with my morning coffee when I’m in Carmel, and you’ve done such a great job with the onlineformat that I can smell the ocean from the Sonoma town square on Friday mornings when I open my email from The PineCone.”

■ “Just a note to tell you how much I enjoy The Pine Cone. Carmel is fortunate to have such a fine paper serving the commu-nity. We spend a couple of months in Carmel each year. Of course, we always pick up a copy of the paper. But we read itcover to cover throughout the year. It is so wonderful to be able to keep up with the community we love so much. Pleasekeep up the good work.”
