PRAYER CHAIN:
Beautiful Savior Church has an active prayer chain sponsored by LWML and the BSLC Stewardship
Committee.
Men and women can be members of the Prayer Chain. To request to be a member of the Prayer
Chain, and/or request a prayer, please call or email Gladys Meyer (480 897-2236, [email protected])
or the church office (480 967-2660, [email protected]). Members will receive the
prayer requests by email unless their preference is to receive them by telephone. A small email
devotion is sent out to all prayer chain members every Monday.
Prayers can be praise or adoration (Psalm 136), thanksgiving (Psalm 118), request for God’s help
(Psalm 22) and intercession in which we pray for others (Psalm 82), (From Luther’s Small
Catechism).
God our Father hears the prayers of His children and answers in His own way and in His own time,
“Before they call I will answer; while they are yet speaking I will hear,” (Isaiah 65:24). PRAYER IS
POWERFUL!
CAPMAKERS - BSLC
CAPMAKERS - BSLC originated February 12, 2014, sponsored by BSLC’s LWML and Stewardship Committee, with eight women meeting for the first time.
Some women were not able to knit because of arthritis in their hands. To begin, we practiced by knitting caps for every member of our families. Our first donation was 34 preemie and baby caps to Gateway Banner Hospital. Through the years, donations were given to Banner Desert Hospital, Maricopa County Hospital, Maricopa Burn Unit, Children’s Cancer Network, Ironwood Cancer Center, Contempo Tempe Rehab, Gililland Middle School, Camp ALOMA, Phoenix Rescue Mission, Grace Lutheran Church, Lutheran Ministry at ASU as well as to individuals going through chemo treatments. Over 900 caps (preemie, children and adult) have been donated. During one meeting, Pastor Misch modeled a red cap and he looked so good, we gave the cap to him.
Kathryn Odle came to Beautiful Savior Church in 2016 from Gethsemane having been crocheting caps for many years. She has crocheted and donated 302 caps to our group at BSLC. Since her retirement she crocheted and donated 50 caps to JUSTA Center, Phoenix, for retired and senior military homeless, 50 red caps to Arizona Heart Association and 1036 caps to Cardon’s Children Hospital plus matched sets of blanket, cap and booties for preemies. Kathryn was forced to take a break when she fell breaking a wrist, but is back doing her thing - crocheting caps and baby sets. Bobbie Littou knitted 40 baby caps while sitting with her daughter in the hospital. Chris Mahler, a member of Christ Lutheran Church, is one of our knitters. Our group of ladies knit/crochet at home during our spare time.
Knitters and crotchetier have taken a break for awhile after donating 150 caps to Lutheran Ministry at ASU but we are still making caps, expecting to get back into it in the fall.
Anyone interested in knitting or crocheting caps is not required to be a member of BSLC. YOU are more than welcome to come and help us.
SOLA FAITH, Grace, Scripture. Ministries New Semester, New Opportunities, and New Challenges
Dear Peter & Cristina,
As the new college semester at ASU begins, the ministry is excited to welcome some
amazing new opportunities and ready to overcome new challenges!
Sola Ministries is ready to do this because of your amazing prayers and support.
New Semester
As one of the largest universities in the United States opening, we are excited to greet
thousands of new students!
Please pray that God will lead these new students to the ministries' Bible Studies and
events.
New Opportunities
Thanks to your amazing prayers and financial support, Sola Ministries is going to be
expanding!
Previous semesters, the ministry has only been able to work the mission field of the
ASU Tempe campus.
But thanks to you, the ministry is going to be ministering to the ASU Glendale campus!
Thank you again for your faithful support!
New Challenges
The COVID-19 pandemic is still impacting our lives, but Sola Ministries is continuing to
adapt to these ever-changing times.
We currently have been meeting with the students via Zoom, an online video
conference website, to host our Bible Studies.
These are special times where the students can share and express their Christian faith
and most importantly bring the students' burdens to the LORD in prayer.
But, we are continuing with our plans to outreach to those who haven’t heard about
the saving Grace of Christ in alternative and safe ways!
We are not only getting reading for engaging and safe events but also relief efforts for
our fellow students.
Please continue to pray for our missionary efforts!
Thank you again for being the Hands and Feet of Christ on Arizona State University
campuses! NEW Website: https://solaministries.org/
Norton Family Newsletter - Serving in God’s Mission in Navajo, NM
Dear Friends in Christ, Well it has been quite a few months for all of us. As you may have heard the COVID-19 pandemic hit the Navajo Nation particularly hard. At one point in time the Navajo Nation had more per capita infections than New York. Although 527 people have died of COVID here on the Reservation since March, none of them were members of our congregation. We did however, have 2 people infected with the virus, but they recovered after hospitalization, and are doing well now by God’s grace. Just as elsewhere the virus has disrupted life here. Originally, we had a very full summer planned, with lots of volunteer groups and two college interns slated to stay. But as the time approached everything was cancelled. There was really no other choice since the tribal government issued curfews, and people were not allowed out of the house from 8:00 pm on Friday evenings until 5:00 am on Monday mornings from April-August. The tribal government also discouraged (and still does) visitors to the Reservation. Again, as elsewhere this meant that we couldn’t meet face-to-face for worship, so we conducted worship through Facebook live. Finally, on the 22nd of August we had our first face-to-face worship service pictured above. As you can see, we met outdoors and had people socially distance. It was a hardship on everyone not to be able to meet for those months, but the joy of gathering together again was underscored by a baptism that took place that day. A week afterward we held the first wedding ceremony since I have arrived here 7 years ago. I have met many young couples on the Reservation that chose to live together without marriage. So, it was a nice turn of events to see this couple make promises to each other with the help of God for the benefit of each other, their children, and their community. Although the past months have been very challenging, it has been amazing to see the help and support we have received from friends both near and far. We received donations of masks, clothing,
food, and gift cards from congregations and LWML groups. On more than one occasion I was able through those gifts to help people who had nowhere else to go. It was a great demonstration of God’s mercy toward people in need. One other benefit of the changes due to the pandemic is that I was able to produce Bible Studies with Rev. David Sternbeck of Lutheran Indian Ministries on a weekly basis. They go back to the 21st of April, so we have covered quite a bit of material. It has been a joy to spend time in the Word of God with a great teacher in our Ministry Organization.

PASTOR SPALLEK:
Let the Children Come
And they were bringing children to him that he might touch them, and the disciples rebuked them. But
when Jesus saw it, he was indignant and said to them, "Let the children come to me; do not hinder
them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the
kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it." And he took them in his arms and blessed them, laying
his hands on them. (Mark 10:13-16)
“Let the little children come to me, for to such belongs the kingdom of God.” What a beautiful lesson
we learn here from our Lord. What comes to mind when you hear the phrase “little children”?
Innocence; trust; wonderment? Yes, children are a blessing. Sometimes they can be exasperating,
but mostly they brighten our lives with their cheerfulness and positive outlook.
So how is Jesus using children as an example of membership in God’s kingdom? Certainly, there are
many who have come to faith later in life. It’s not as if there is some maximum age limit to entrance
into God’s family. No, what our Lord refers to is receiving the kingdom “like a child.’ In other words,
with a trusting faith that worries not about how or why, but just believes.
Think about it. A child doesn’t worry about paying the bills or balancing the budget. Even if he or she
knows nothing about such matters, they still trust their parent or guardian to provide a safe and
secure environment. They simply trust that their present and future is well cared for. And what’s more,
they reach out in love to their providers. This is the way Jesus says we are to approach our Father in
heaven. With love for His goodness to us, and trust that He has provided for our needs, here and for
eternity.
None of this is to say Christians should check their brains at the door. We have a mission here on
earth to help and assist one another and to defend and spread the gospel. We also study God’s Word
to learn more about Him and to have our faith grow stronger. But it is not the strength of that faith that
gets us entry into His kingdom. It’s the childlike trust we show, the knowledge that He alone (and not
we) are the source of our salvation. And like a little child that is eager to explore and learn, it is that
whole attitude of trust that make us want to grow in Him and serve Him through our neighbor.
In God’s kingdom, to trust like a child is gain. “And He took them in His arms, and blessed them!”
Pastor Peter
