Here I am, Lord

Today we hear the wonderful story of the call of Samuel. It took several attempts for him to realize that the Lord was calling him in the middle of the night. The seasoned mentor Eli acted as a kind of spiritual director for Samuel and helped him to discern the voice and message of the Lord. Finally, Samuel was able to respond, “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.” This text is one of the inspirations for the familiar song composed by Daniel Schutte in 1981. It is used quite a lot in Catholic liturgies. Here is the refrain: “Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night. I will go, Lord, if you lead me. I will hold your people in my heart.” During this time when we cannot sing in church because of the pandemic, we might especially find ourselves humming along with this stirring hymn. When have you felt like Samuel? When have you responded to God like Samuel?

Fr. Yo iré, Señor, si tú me guías. Mantendré a tu gente en mi corazón ". Durante este tiempo cuando no podemos cantar en la iglesia debido a la pandemia, es posible que nos encontremos especialmente tarareando este himno conmovedor. ¿Cuándo te has sentido como Samuel? ¿Cuándo le has respondido a Dios como Samuel?

Our Call Is To Love And Serve We here at Risen Savior are blessed by our Prayer Shawl Ministry and Peacemakers. These faithful artists create quilts and shawls that have provided consolation, comfort and also joyous blessings to so many people both here in our community and beyond our walls.

From Baptismal quilt squares to shawls given to youth at St. Joseph's Home, to people in grief and people who are ill, these reminders of God's warm love are an inspiration to many. Now our quilts and shawls are being utilized by the Spiritual Care Department at Fairview Ridges. The chaplains have said that these creations are so deeply appreciated by patients and their families in times of illness and recovery.

On behalf of the chaplains, ‘thank you’ to all who participate in this ministry. Your generosity and creativity are deeply appreciated.

God bless you as God blesses us by your gifts!

Shape the future of Risen Savior - together we can make it happen! Over the past 50+ years, thousands of people have offered their time, talent, and treasure to build our Risen Savior parish community. Now it's our turn to reach into the next 50+ years.

Plans are underway to re-create our current signage to include an electronic sign on our campus along County Road 42. This dynamic memorial of our anniversary and our parish family will: provide an updated, high-powered presence along a busy street, invite others, announce Mass times, parish events, announce emergency messages and cancellations, provide encouraging messages of hope, just to give a few examples. Check out the mock-up on the right.

Together we can impact people within and outside of our doors in our call to love and serve Christ and one another. Watch for information in the coming months about ways you can make a difference with your financial contribution. Please plan ahead now and consider ways you can offer your financial support for this one-time 50th Anniversary project; fundraising campaign begins in March 2021.

Let’s move forward, take a step into the future . . . let’s make it happen! Contact: Marianne Brass [email protected], (952) 698-1714 with questions regarding this exciting 50th Anniversary project.

DYNAMIC MEMORIAL TO COMMEMORATE 50 YEARS OF RISEN SAVIOR

The Knights of Columbus are sponsoring a virtual Novena for Life starting Sunday, January 17 and continuing through Monday, January 25. This time period coincides with the 48th anniversary of the Supreme Court decision to legalize abortion in our country. Since we cannot meet in person at this time due to COVID-19 restrictions, you are encouraged to pray the novena daily at a time of your own choosing. Prayer cards are available in the back of church.

What is a Novena? (From Catholic Straight Answers) A novena is a nine day period of private or public prayer to obtain special graces, to implore special favors, or make special petitions. (Novena is derived from the Latin ‘novem,’ meaning nine). As the definition suggests, the novena has always had more of a sense of urgency and neediness.

Pope Francis’ Latest Encyclical Fratelli Tutti: On Fraternity and Social Friendship On October 3, 2020, Pope Francis released the social encyclical Fratelli Tutti: On Fraternity and Social Friendship. Encyclicals are documents that the Pope issues to a particular audience with a focus on a topic or issue of importance. Pope Francis addressed Fratelli Tutti to all people of good will who are open to dialogue. Inspired by St. Francis of Assisi’s way of Gospel-living, Pope Francis calls for a renewed commitment to respond to the challenges of our day with love for all people and our earth —regardless of how near or far to us they are. Over the next several weeks, look for brief bulletin articles discussing each of the 8 chapters of the encyclical. You can find the entire document at http://www.vatican.va/content/francesco/en/encyclicals/documents/papa-francesco_20201003_enciclica-fratelli-tutti.html. Over the next several months, the Center for Mission will host a series of events on Fratelli Tutti with a variety of speakers helping break down the themes and applications of the encyclical. The first presentation will be January 26 from 7:00-8:30 p.m. with speaker Bernie Evans, Professor at St. John’s University. More information to come!

360 Communities Needs Your Help! Are you or someone you know looking for practical ways to serve? Many of 360’s regular volunteers have had to step back from volunteering due to COVID, which has created a need for new volunteers to help fill shifts to pack and distribute food shelf orders through a drive-up model. Learn more and sign up to help, visit https://risensavior.org/volunteer-opps/360-communities-temp/.

Volunteer from Home with Prison Ministry Video Project! Have you been wondering how you can reach out to those in need from home? Risen Savior needs volunteers to join our team working on sharing the Gospel with individuals who are currently incarcerated. Because of COVID restrictions, volunteers are no longer allowed in corrections facilities, but Twin Cities Prison Ministry (TCPM) has put together a video project you can do from home, which then gets sent to corrections facilities for those “on the inside” to be fed spiritually! We are looking for people to record brief segments for the video project, which include introductory remarks, prayers, a proclamation of the Gospel, and reflection. All of these segments are scripted for you. Instructions are provided. Commitment can be as little as 10 minutes to record a segment or longer if you have skills and desire to help with creating music or processing the DVDs. Learn more at https://risensavior.org/volunteer-opps/prison-ministry-video-project/ or contact Grace.

Volunteer Tutors Urgently Needed Mary’s Place Homeless Shelter tutoring program, of Sharing and Caring Hands, desperately needs volunteers ages 16+ to help our homeless youth with their homework/reading. No teaching/tutoring experience required. We provide you with training on your first day. We have a COVID-19 safety plan in place and easy parking for volunteers. We are located at the southwest tip of Minneapolis and downtown driving is minimal. Open Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays from 4:00-6:00 p.m. Volunteers pick one day per week to attend for the duration of an academic semester (January-May). Interested? Contact Kathy Klement (612) 596-3418 or at [email protected]. More information also at sharingandcaringhands.org.

Reimagining the Future for God’s Creation: Virtual Event on February 1 InterFaith Creation Care South Metro (ICCSM) invites you join their online discussion Monday, February 1 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. The event will include a Climate Reality presentation showing the environmental destruction impacts we are experiencing today, how we got to this point, and what the future may hold. Following that, participants will use En-ROADS to imagine together what our future could be. En-ROADS is a “choose your ending” simulation that uses some of the best available science to compute and present the results of choices in energy, food production, land use, and consumer behavior that society can make today. January 17, 2021 Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Christ is anything but ordinary. We are about to dive headlong into week two of Ordinary Time, and we need to admit, after the hustle and bustle of the holidays, things are indeed looking more . . . ordinary, at least in our spiritual lives. The transcendent highs of the Christmas season are flatlining a bit and the vivid imagery of the Nativity scene has faded. The solemn anticipation of the Advent season is by now a distant memory. Are you bored yet? Here’s a secret: I think that Ordinary Time can actually be quite extraordinary, if we’re really living out our baptismal call. In today’s Gospel, Jesus point-blank asks Andrew, who is following him after hearing John the Baptist’s testimony: “What are you looking for?” He’s asking us the same question. What are you looking for? Why are you following me? Is it for the Christmas cookies and the Advent carols? Is it for the King ’s Cake on the Epiphany? Is it for the feeling we get on Christmas when we just know God has done a wondrous thing? None of those things are bad, but they are not what Andrew was looking for, and they were not what Christ promised him when he said, “Come, and you will see.” Andrew was looking for the Messiah — the One who makes even Ordinary Time extraordinary. The One who can sanctify the longest and dullest of to-do lists, on the longest and dullest of days. The One whose peace can reign in our homes on January 25, not just December 25. Remember what you are looking for. Come, and you will see. - Tracy Earl Welliver, LPI

BAUTISMOS
