PRESENTS:

God’s work. Our hands.

MONTHLY The Mission of Our Savior: That all may know Christ, grow in Christ and joyfully go with Christ.

FROM OUR PASTOR…

What shall I return to the LORD for all his bounty to me? I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the LORD.

Psalm 116:12-13.

Every family’s thanksgiving celebration looks a bit different yet I venture to guess that for most these celebrations include pretty much the same food – Turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, some sort of vegetables and, of course, pumpkin pie. I also venture to guess that the arrangement of the dining room looks a bit similar in each household as well. Grandmothers, grandfathers, parents and perhaps an aunt and uncle or two around the main dining room table. Children eat at the card table or kitchen counter. Maybe football is on the television? Or perhaps a Thanksgiving movie – The Great Pumpkin featuring Charlie Brown? Whatever, it’s a day to relax and visit and eat way too much. Did I mention a nap? I do wonder though. How much of our celebrations have anything to do with giving thanks? On December 21, 1620 the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth

rock in Massachusetts and they didn’t have it easy right from the get go. Here they were, in a new place and it was the dead of winter. No way to grow crops during that season! No way to investigate their surroundings. The winds off the Atlantic are freezing and biting that time of year – they were chilled to the bone. Add to this the strenuous labor of building shelter in adverse weather conditions, meager food, poor morale and finally disease and you have a recipe for disaster. And disaster happened – nearly half of the 102 Mayflower passengers did not live to see the beautiful Spring come to Cape Cod. If it were not for the Native people – Samoset, Squanto

and Massasoit the remaining people wouldn’t have survived either. They helped them to recognize unfamiliar vegetables, plant crops, hunt and fish. The bountiful harvest that autumn led Governor Bradford to invite the Natives to come for a day and celebrate with them. WORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES!

November 4 & 5—All Saints’! On this weekend we celebrate All Saints’ Day. Some denominations call it “All Souls’ Sunday” but in the ELCA we know it differently. It is customary on this day that we remember the names of people who died in our congregation this past year and we will ring a bell as their name is said as part of the prayers. Pastor Jeanne at OSLC and Chaplain Deb Hammer at St. Peter’s will name each person individually in their sermon and raise up their own unique saint like qualities. At OSLC, the choir will be singing. November 11 & 12—Gospel for the day is Matthew

25:1-13. Today the prophet Amos calls for justice to roll down like waters. Paul urges us to encourage one another with the promised coming of the Lord. Jesus tells the parable of the wise and foolish bridesmaids. Surrounded by the faithful of every time and place, we celebrate Christ’s coming in our midst in the word of life and the feast of victory – the marriage feast of the lamb! At OSLC, the Joyful Noise handbells will be ringing on Sunday! November 18 & 19—Gospel for the day is Matthew

25:14-30. Our readings during November speak of the end times. Zephaniah proclaims that the coming day of the Lord will be filled with wrath and distress. Paul says it will come like a thief in the night and urges us to be awake and sober. Jesus tells the parable of the talents, calling us to use our gifts, while we still have time, for the greater and common good. In a world filled with violence and despair, we gather around signs of hope – word, water, bread and wine – eager to welcome the good news of Christ’s coming among us! November 19—Community Thanksgiving Service

with our Ecumenical partners in faith! This annual event is the gathering of many of the congregations here in Wayne. This year’s service will be held here at Our Savior Lutheran Church beginning at 7pm with Pastor Teresa Bartlett of First Presbyterian Church preaching. A soup and pie supper will follow. Hope to see you there! November 22—Thanksgiving Service, 7pm. At

harvest time we join the psalmist in offering thanksgiving to God: “You crown the year with your goodness, and your paths overflow with plenty.” We are grateful for the abundance of the good things of God’s creation. Paul

reminds us that our thanksgiving overflows into generosity. As the body of Christ in the world, we give ourselves away as bread for the hungry. November 25 & 26—Christ the King Sunday! Christ the

King Sunday is the New Year’s Eve of the church year. We conclude this 2017 church year remembering that Christ is the beginning and end of all life – we have followed his story for an entire year and the next weekend December 2 & 3 we begin all over again with a new year as we watch and wait again for the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ during our Advent 1 service!

Once again, Our Savior and CoCo (College Connections) Ministry, will share Christmas greetings with our college students and WSC students who attend worship here. To do this, we are asking you to help us gather the items required to make up the packages. A list of items needed will be listed in the weekend bulletins or at the information desk. Please indicate what you would like to share and how much of each item.

Items need to be brought to the church office by noon on Wednesday, November 29 so they can be assembled and distributed the first week of December.

C# P!

This year’s Christmas Program will be different than in past years. Why? Because ALL ages will help with the presentation! That’s right! Parents with young babies, children, youth, middle aged, those stuck at age 39, senior citizens and even those who refuse to let anyone know their age! Everyone will have a part. Keep looking for more information. You won’t want to miss this!

ATTENTION:

SR. HIGH YOUTH!

• Youth Group is invited to meet every Wednesday night during the school year at 6:30pm at the Front Porch with Pastor Kristen.

• The Lutheran Youth of the Nebraska (LYON) are gathering for a fun weekend in Grand Island November 17th – 19th. Talk to Pastor Kristen if you would like to attend.

• The 2018 ELCA Youth Gathering is less than a year away!!! Anyone who is ready to register talk ASAP to Pastor Kristen. “This Changes Everything!”

FROM PASTOR KRISTEN...

I have been meeting for the past two months with the youth group on Wednesday nights from 6:30pm-7:30pm. We have been having a great deal of fun, but I have pointed out to them, that the whole point of our youth group is not to simply be another club. There are plenty of clubs at school and in the community that do great things. Rather, a senior high school youth group is made up of all those kids who have finished the confirmation program and have been confirmed. I asked them all at one of our meetings if they remembered what promises they had made on the day they were confirmed. They didn’t remember, but to be fair, perhaps most Lutheran adults don’t remember the promises they made either! To jog your memory, I’m listing them here:

• to live among God’s faithful people • to hear the word of God and share in the Lord’s Supper

• to proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed

• to serve all people, following the example of Jesus • and to strive for justice and peace in all the earth

As I explained to the senior high youth, their group time is about them, as confirmed disciples of Christ, experimenting with ways that they might fulfill the promises they made. The Spirit calls all of us baptized people of God to adopt these promises in our daily lives. As teenagers, the youth are no longer children, and not yet adults, whose task is to wrestle with what kind of disciples they are going to be.

That’s why each youth group meeting I encourage the kids to explore a topic or activity that fits in with one of the promises they made. So far, they have been most interested in learning about world-wide hunger and development issues in other countries. I am hoping that this will inspire them to want to know more about the mission work of the church and our various relief organizations (ELCA World Hunger, Lutheran World Relief, Lutheran Disaster Response, Lutheran Social Services).

So adults, how are you fulfilling your confirmation promises? Please consider sharing your answers with the youth! -Pastor Kristen

The 2017 Lay Leadership Academy will take place Saturday & Sunday, November 18-19 at the Swanson Center at Camp Carol Joy Holling in Ashland! This year’s event will focus on “Leadership is Living (Your Christian Vocation)” and will feature the Rev. Dr. Dave Daubert, ELCA pastor and congregational consultant.

Dave Daubert, DMin., PhD has served in congregational, synodical, and church wide ministry. Today he leads Day 8 Strategies throughout the US and Canada. He is recognized as a leader in the fields of church renewal, leadership, strategy, and stewardship. The Lay Leadership Academy will utilize Daubert's writing, "Luther's Priesthood of Believers"; a look at what practices are beneficial for forming a simple pattern of Christian Living as disciples in the 21st Century.

Cost for the event is $149. Registration closes November 6; please register online prior to that date. If you’d like more information about this event, please see the flyer on the kiosk or check out the event page on the Nebraska Synod website here: https://nebraskasynodorg.presencehost.net/news-media/you-are-invited.html/event/2017/11/19/2017-lay-leadership-academy/175372.

Ladies, I want to tell you a little bit about my experience as your delegate at the Nebraska Synod WELCA Organization

Convention, I attended September 28, 29 & 30 at Carol Joy Holling Camp. The Theme was “Changes, Challenges & Choices”. We registered late Thursday afternoon at the Swanson

Center, which is where we resided and where most of the convention was held. The Servant Room was open each day from 8am–5pm to work in as time allowed you. We could help make Fleece Blankets for LWR. There were 35 made by Friday night! Thursday at 4pm we were given a tour of the 300 acre

campsite, which has a camping grounds, NLOM has an office there, lots of places to hold events of different sizes, day campsites, swimming pool, a lake, an outside church service area where the Holling family remains are buried, maneuver exercise areas, etc. The Chef there, prepared us a delicious Roast Pork supper in

the Dining Hall. We had Carrot Cake for dessert and then returned to the Swanson Center for an old fashioned sing-a-long with our Christian sisters. Lisa Kramme, Director of Faith Foundation with the Nebraska

Synod, entertained us dressed as “Katie Luther”. She kept our attention and gave a great presentation. We were then treated to German refreshments. Some of us ladies played cards and reminisced, before we retired to our rooms and had our in-room devotions. Friday, after breakfast, we had Voting Member Orientation

and Opening Devotions with Pastor Paula Lawhead, Pastor for NLOM, who resides on the site with her family. The first Business Session followed with the Appointment of Committees,

first Ballot for NSWO President, a video from Bishop Maas, and a talk from Churchwide Past Treasurer, Ely Smith. She reported that giving is down by 73% at churchwide. Nebraska is the biggest contributor to the Women of the ELCA. She thanked us for our support and asked us to support Katie’s Fund, Human Trafficking, U.N. Leadership in Liberia and for our Thank Offerings. We then submitted the second and third ballots for President

and ballots for other officers. Nancy Johnson was re-elected as President and Elysia McGill was re-elected as Vice President. I then went to a workshop on Human Trafficking with

Federico Vincente of the Salvation Army’s “Fight to end Trafficking”. He told us that age and sex don’t matter to these people. They look for little children, teens and adults. Anyone

was given by Ann Schultz. She showed us a film of barefoot children in Uganda, who get Jiggers in their feet. They are not the Chiggers we have here! These bore into their feet and lay eggs and are very painful. The only way to remove them is with a pin. The shoes we made were from recycled denim jeans, cardboard and plastic milk jugs. These shoes will protect them in the future. We were able to make 100 pair of shoes. The Executive Board of the Nebraska Synod WELCA, presented a check for $100, to ship them to Uganda. It made me feel grateful to help and thankful that our children don’t have to go without shoes. After a supper of Salmon and Shrimp, we returned for a

Bonfire and Music by “2 Gals & a Guitar”. However; those little black bugs were thick and biting, so it was moved inside for those who didn’t care for that environment. We had a Chocolate fountain with Angle-food chunks, fruit, etc. to dip and to eat while we enjoyed the music and visited with our Christian Sisters. We ended the evening again with devotions in our rooms. Saturday we awoke to cool and breezy weather. The

camp is active this morning, with young people attending weekend camps. After breakfast Pastor Paula led us in a Bible Study. My workshop that morning was on photography “Seeking God in unexpected places”, with Candy Pflaster. We walked to different stations on the camp grounds, paused to take in the moment, and then expressed what this area brought to our minds. We then read a devotion and prayed together before moving to the next station. It was very inspiring and I came away feeling fulfilled. The Chef again prepared an outstanding dinner for us. We

gathered on the hillside for a group picture of all the convention attendees. There were seventy-seven plus presenters. When we returned to the Swanson Center we found tables piled with ribbons, collected at the last convention two years ago. We were instructed to make ourselves a “Stole” out of these ribbons and wear it. It was a fun time, laughing and finding the right colors.

We then had installation of officers and the final worship service with communion, lead by Pastor Paula. At the end of the service, the 2½” x 44” strips of cloth we

each brought, had been pinned together and rolled into rolls. One roll was opened and strung through the room so that each person there had a hand on it. Pastor Paula gave the blessing for these strips and a quilt will be made of them to be auctioned at the Carol Joy Holling Camp Quilt Auction later on. Another workshop I attended was the Lutheran Family

Service – Nebraska Immigrant – by Lacey Studnicka. They have people from Burma, Somalia, Sudan and Syria placed in Nebraska. They get a family and arrange a place for them to live and give them $925 to live on for 90 days. They get them their Social Security number, doctor appointments, children into school, language learning classes and a place to work in the first 90 days here. After 90 days, they are on their own with occasional check-ins. She told that during the Iraq and Iran Military missions, an officer now stationed at SAC in Omaha, had an Iraq Interpreter helping the U.S. military and they became close friends. This put the Iraq Interpreter and his family in a life-threatening position. The SAC officer has since set up a home here for the Iraq family and they are so thankful he saved their lives. There were other interesting workshops to attend; but time didn’t allow me to go to every one. Thank you for sponsoring me to attend and for your

contributions of craft supplies for Carol Joy Holling Camp. There were 3,569 sheets of Construction Paper, 549 Markers/Sharpies; 108 Dry Erasers; 370 Socks for kids; 1,131 Skeins of Embroidery Floss plus 15 big spools; and $20 in cash. The Mission Contributions at the end of the first session

was $1,860. There was no report available for the offering taken after our Worship and Communion service. I hope you will see what an inspiring adventure this is to

attend a WELCA Convention and consider going as a delegate or attendee in two years. Once you go, you will want to go again and meet up with the friends you made there.

Blessings,

Dorothy Wert

WELCA President

Note: November’s Joy Circle meeting will be the annual Memorial Service and will include a Thankoffering Service. Please remember to bring your Thankofferings.

Sleeping mats are made from plastic shopping bags. This is a great way to recycle all those plastic grocery bags! (A basket is available in the narthex to collect CLEAN bags.) There are several steps to preparing the bags before the mats can be crocheted…so there are opportunities for all to participate!
