The Parish Messenger JULY/AUGUST 2017 NEWSLETTER THE EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH OF OUR SAVIOR HADDONFIELD, NJ 10:30 WORSHIP TO END BY 11:40 OR EARLIER EVERY WEEK – GUARANTEED! “If we knew that worship would end by 11:30 we would be there all the time.” The parent who shared that comment wasn’t necessarily opposed to worship services and Sunday faith formation classes that last over an hour. The prob- lem had to do with Sunday morning schedules. “If we have a game or event to be at by noon or even 12:30 we have to be out of church by 11:30 if we are to make it on time. But if there is a baptism, or a faith blessing event, or multi- ple choir anthems we usually don’t get out until 11:45 or later and that just doesn’t give us enough time to prepare and arrive at our next event on Sunday’s busy schedule.” In response to these and similar concerns over the past years, the Worship and Music Committee and worship staff, discussed how worship might be able to end by 11:30 on a regular basis and in extreme cases no later than 11:40. Over the last four weeks the 10:30 worship service has ended no later than 11:38 and as early as 11:25. In those last four weeks there has been a baptism, a confirmation of 13 youth, a graduate blessing, and one Sunday with multi- ple choirs singing anthems. Here’s what made the difference and will be followed throughout the summer and going forward. Announcements will begin promptly at 7:55 and 10:25 followed by the Prelude. Confession and Forgiveness will begin at 8:00 and 10:30. When there are baptisms, blessing rites (e.g. Confirmation, Senior Blessing), or multiple choir anthems, the music staff will insure hymns remain around 3 minutes and Pastor Wayne will insure his sermon ends by 11:00 or earlier. If on those Sundays the sacraments and blessing rites are anticipated to take a significant amount of time, the Confession will be omitted for that service and an extra communion assistant will be stationed at the rear of the church to expedite communion distribution. PLEASE NOTE: The overall quality and content of our worship will not change! What we have observed is simply by starting worship on time and making some slight changes we are confident the 10:30 worship will end by 11:30 almost every Sunday and no later than 11:40 on any given Sunday. The Worship and Music Committee hopes this will enable a greater portion of our congregation to integrate worship and faith formation back into their busy Sunday schedules so they might be fed with God’s word and food of faith and equipped for ministry each week. VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL Maker Fun Factory sparks imagination! At VBS this year, kids discover they’re lovingly crafted by God. On this interactive ad- venture, curious kids become hands-on inventors and experience God-the ultimate Maker-in new and wildly creative ways. They learn one important Bible point each day through Bible adventures, key Bible verses, songs, snacks and hands-on exploration. VBS is July 24-28 from 9:00 AM-noon. For more information about how you can vol- unteer to be a part of VBS please contact Jack Broomell, Director of Youth and Fami- ly Ministry: 856-889-1718 or [email protected]. VBS VOLUNTEERS NEEDED July 24 th to 28 th from 9AM to Noon is our annual VBS here at LCOS. As we get closer and closer to those dates we are looking to fill our final volunteer spots. We can always use help with crew leaders who bring the kids from station to station. We also have spots in the movie room, music, recreation and bible stories. If you or someone you know is interested please contact the church office or email Jack at [email protected] to let them know how you can volunteer as soon as possible! Even if you can only do a day or two any help is greatly appreciated.

“SUMMER READING AND STORIES TO SHARE” By Pastor Wayne Zschech

As a teenager I hated to read. In fact, I am so glad I grew up in a time before required summer read-ing. However, after a Bachelor’s, Master of Divinity, and Doctor of Ministry degrees and serving as a pastor I now enjoy reading, both for ministry and for pleasure. Last summer, while on sabbatical, I listened to seven audio books while driving on my 4,800 mile trip out west and read a few more when I got home. This summer I hope to read some of the books I purchased years ago while writ-

ing my thesis project but never got around to reading the entire book. They include; After You Believe: why Christian charac-ter matters by N. T. Wright, Consuming Religion: Christian faith and practice in a consumer culture by Vincent Miller, Shopping Malls and Other Sacred Spaces by Jon Pahl, and Starting Small Groups: Building Communities that Matter by Herb Miller. Then there is Conscious Capitalism by John Murray and some fiction novels I’ve been itching to read, as well as, finish the last two books in the Chronicles of Narnia anthology I own. What’s on your summer reading list? Fiction novels? Biographies or historical accounts of events? Self-help or improve-ment books? Whatever is your pleasure I hope your reading is a source of refreshment and renewal in how you live your life and the perspective from which you live it. I also hope you might share your discoveries with others. Share the sto-ries you’ve been reading about and how it has impacted your life. We often do this after reading an inspiring or enjoya-ble book in the hopes they too will read it so that it may have an impact on their lives as well. Isn’t that what the stories we read and hear from God’s Word in the Bible and hear from God’s faithful people are also intended to do? We read the devotional reading for the day from Christ In Our Home and the reflection that accompanies it and reflect on how that impacts our life. Then, we might share that story with a family member, friend, neighbor, or co-worker later in the day in the appropriate moment. We might do the same after hearing a thought-provoking sermon either at Our Savior or a congregation you visit while on vacation, or even TV (while I do not hold a lot of respect for the theology of most televangelists I do believe God can speak through anyone!) The point is, do we share God’s stories and our faith stories with others with the same passion as we share the latest New York Times bestseller we just fin-ished? Often times not. I’ve been officiating and attending a lot of funerals in the last two months (fourteen in all) and we often hear the de-ceased’s faith story shared during the reflections period by family, friends, and clergy. Yet, is this the only time our faith story is to be shared? I hope not. In fact, no one can tell our story better than ourselves! So this summer I encourage you to also consider how you might share your stories of faith with others. Begin with your family. Talk to your spouse, sib-ling, son or daughter about how the stories of faith in the Bible impact your relationship of faith and trust in God. And when the moment presents itself, be encouraged by the Holy Spirit to share it with your friends, co-workers or neigh-bors. You don’t need to be preachy. Just share your story. Who knows? It may just be what the other person needs to hear to check out the Bible or reconnect with God through worship in a congregation near them. If so, don’t forget to invite them to Our Savior with you!

REV. SARA LILJA (JUL 2) & REV. KIMBERLY VAUGHN (JUL 9) TO SUPPLY PREACH AND PRESIDE Pastor Wayne Zschech will be away on vacation and away on the Youth Mission Trip for the first two Sundays of July, and has lined up two excellent pastors to provide worship leadership during his absence. Here is a brief description of the role they play in NJ Synod ministry.

Rev. Sara Lilja has served as director of the Lutheran Episcopal Advocacy Ministry in NJ since 2011. LEAMNJ partners with coalition partners around the state of New Jersey to advocate on issues related to hunger, housing, economic empowerment, immigration and community violence. In addition, Rev. Lilja can help congregations learn more about using their voice in the public square.

Rev. Kimberly Vaughn serves as the Assistant to the Bishop of NJ and helps congregations connect their understanding of Christian discipleship and witness with God’s love for all people, so that they can find ways to include, reflect and celebrate the diversity of their surrounding communities.

JOIN YOUR NEIGHBORS HELP YOUR NEIGHBORS

For over 26 years Interfaith Care-givers has been helping people 65+ and those with disabilities live independently and stay active in their community. Our volunteers

provide rides to medical appointments, grocery stores, and social events. We grocery shop and run errands with/for seniors. Do you or someone you know need Interfaith Caregivers? If so call our office at 354-0298. Many of your neighbors are already helping our nearly 300 clients. Won’t you join them? Give as much time as you have – an hour or two a week or a month. We work around your schedule. Call us or go online whenever you have some time, or check our email list to see what we have available. Our next training is Thursday, July 13 from 9am to 11:30am at Mabel Kay senior Center, 24 Walnut Street, Haddonfield. For more details, call the Interfaith Caregivers office at 856-354-0298 or visit www.ifchaddons.org.

June was very warm but a month where we got to see 13 youth be confirmed and renew their baptismal vows along with celebrating our graduating seniors as they begin their jour-ney in college. June was a month of celebration. As we look into July we have an extremely busy few weeks. We have the mission trip, camps for Jr. and Sr. high schoolers and VBS/Youth week. It will be an exciting time but also very busy. Any questions feel free to con-tact Jack at [email protected] • July 8th to 15th – Mission Trip to North Carolina • July 16th to 22nd – Delanco Jr. High 1 Camp (Entering 7th, 8th and 9th grades) • July 23rd to 28th – Youth Week/VBS • July 30th to August 5th – Delanco Teen Camp (Entering 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th grades) • August 6th to 12th – Delanco Jr. High II Camp (Entering 7th, 8th and 9th grades)

Delanco Camp is a camp that I myself have been involved with for several years; working on staff, attending retreats and spending many hours eating their fantastic food. It is located in Tabernacle, NJ and is a Chris-tian camp that offers week long retreats for different ages each week over the summer. I personally will be at the Jr. High I camp and Teen Camp as a counselor and teacher. These are great opportunities to get away from the business of life and enjoy a week at camp with friends (and great for parents to have a quiet house for a week!). More information about camps and registration is at Delanco.org along with prices. If prices are an issue please contact Jack at [email protected] as scholarships and discounts are available, there is already a $50 discount for first time campers!

90TH ANNIVERSARY BANQUET - CAN YOU HELP?

The Anniversary Steering Committee is looking for people to help with the 90th anniver-sary banquet to be held October 29, 2017, at Tavistock Country Club. We are looking for volunteers – to create centerpieces for the tables or to assemble a slide show or to join the Steering Committee If you are interested in helping, contact Laura Oakes, [email protected], 856-429-6009 or Bobbi Newsham, [email protected], 609-828-5244.

LCOS MEMORABILIA COFFEE HOUR As part of our 90th Anniversary Celebration we are having a special Coffee Hour on Sunday, November 12. We chose 11/12 as it is near Martin Luther’s Birthday; he was born 11/10/1483. Please start gathering any items you have connected to LCOS, including pictures. These could include Confirmation at the church, your wedding picture if you were married here, Fastnacht, Mother’s Day, etc. We are also looking for any newspaper articles or items relating to the church, such as refrigerator magnets, book marks, Christmas cards, that you may have to display that day. It will be fun to see what items will be found. We will collect the items in October and keep them at the church at a specific TBD spot for safe keeping. We ask that you write details of what it is and your name on a 3 x 5 index card so everyone knows who brought the item and we will make sure it gets back to you. More information to follow in the September Messenger. Any questions, please contact Bobbi Newsham of the 90th Anni-versary Committee at 609-828-5244 or [email protected].

24 YOUTH/5 ADULTS PARTICIPATE IN GOLDSBORO NC HABITAT MISSION TRIP JULY 8-15

On Saturday, July 8, there will be 24 youth from Our Savior and the surrounding community along with five adults, who will be heading to Goldsboro NC and work with their chapter of Habitat for Humanity. This will make our 11th consecutive year appearance in Goldsboro (thanks to Lisa and Brandon Quanci going last year to keep the streak alive!) and it will also be our largest group. $4,350 was raised toward the HFH $150/participant fee with a memorial in memory of Carol Hammon providing support for ten participants and a donation from another member sup-porting two more. The Youth Mission Team is so thankful to those who supported the Spaghetti Dinner and Yard Sale fundraisers in May and June respectively. The theme for this year is “Love Is Greater than Hate” and we will explore the Great Commandment Jesus offers his disci-ples to love God and love your neighbor. While we do not know what work exactly we will be doing at this time it may range from framing, to siding installation, handicap ramp construction, painting or landscaping. Please keep our group in your prayers as we work in the hot and humid North Carolina heat this July and for safe travels there and back.

10:30 WORSHIP TO END BY 11:40 OR EARLIER EVERY WEEK – GUARANTEED! “If we knew that worship would end by 11:30 we would be there all the time.” The parent who shared that comment wasn’t necessarily opposed to worship services and Sunday faith formation classes that last over an hour. The prob-lem had to do with Sunday morning schedules. “If we have a game or event to be at by noon or even 12:30 we have to be out of church by 11:30 if we are to make it on time. But if there is a baptism, or a faith blessing event, or multi-ple choir anthems we usually don’t get out until 11:45 or later and that just doesn’t give us enough time to prepare and arrive at our next event on Sunday’s busy schedule.”

In response to these and similar concerns over the past years, the Worship and Music Committee and worship staff, discussed how worship might be able to end by 11:30 on a regular basis and in extreme cases no later than 11:40. Over the last four weeks the 10:30 worship service has ended no later than 11:38 and as early as 11:25. In those last four weeks there has been a baptism, a confirmation of 13 youth, a graduate blessing, and one Sunday with multi-ple choirs singing anthems. Confirmation, Senior Blessing), or multiple choir anthems, the music

staff will insure hymns remain around 3 minutes and Pastor Wayne will insure his sermon ends by 11:00 or earlier. If on those Sundays the sacraments and blessing rites are anticipated to take a significant amount of time, the

Confession will be omitted for that service and an extra communion assistant will be stationed at the rear of the church to expedite communion distribution. PLEASE NOTE: The overall quality and content of our worship will not change! What we have observed

is simply by starting worship on time and making some slight changes we are confident the 10:30 worship will end by 11:30 almost every Sunday and no later than 11:40 on any given Sunday. The Worship and Music Committee hopes this will enable a greater portion of our congregation to integrate worship and faith formation back into their busy Sunday schedules so they might be fed with God’s word and food of faith and equipped for ministry each week.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL

Maker Fun Factory sparks imagination!

At VBS this year, kids discover they’re lovingly crafted by God. On this interactive ad-venture, curious kids become hands-on inventors and experience God-the ultimate Maker-in new and wildly creative ways. They learn one important Bible point each day through Bible adventures, key Bible verses, songs, snacks and hands-on exploration. VBS is July 24-28 from 9:00 AM-noon. For more information about how you can vol-unteer to be a part of VBS please contact Jack Broomell, Director of Youth and Fami-ly Ministry: 856-889-1718 or [email protected].

VBS VOLUNTEERS NEEDED July 24th to 28th from 9AM to Noon is our annual VBS here at LCOS.
