Some of you are looking at this and wondering, “Is this late?” Well, we could have a discussion about the definition of ‘late’ (and my wife would be rolling on the floor laughing at anything I would say on that issue), but let us consider why this may be “later.” We say thank you to Dorothy Pederson, who after giving this congregation almost 13 years, moved on to another job at the end of May. This new job is full-time with

benefits and a new challenge for her. I look forward to seeing the things she will be doing as a volunteer going forward. We say welcome to Diane Davis, who is joining our church family with her mom and her two boys, as our new Administrative Secretary. Dorothy has been giving her some help, but Diane is on the learning curve, so the Vista is ‘later.’ Make sure you say hi and introduce yourself to her when you call or stop in the office.

This is a good time for a transition. The heat is on and things tend to slow down because of that. School is out, trips are planned, so attendance dips a little. Some thoughts for the summer: In service child faith activity: Sundays, starting June 5th, we will start a trial run of an activity for young children during the sermon time. This activity is meant for two things. One, it is to provide some further age appropriate opportunities for our younger members. And two, provide an opportunity for parents to be able to focus on the sermon knowing their little ones are ok. It may be an activity on the chancel steps, like I have done before, or they may go to the Conference Room with two adults. We are trying this out for the Summer, and if you are interested in helping, please contact Jeremy Knight. Wednesdays: We are providing a midweek service with Holy Communion every week. It is based on Taize’, so it is a simpler, contemplative service with Holy Communion and prayers at the cross. This service provides a non-weekend opportunity for worship to help get you over the hump, or to have a chance to worship if Sunday morning didn’t work. I strongly encourage you to try it out if you haven’t and see if it will help you in your ongoing journey with Jesus. God’s Work. Our Hands.: This year it will fall on September 11th. I am collecting ideas for activities and looking for team leaders. If you have an idea, please see me soon. There will be t-shirts available for purchase. Order deadline is July 24th. I understand that there are some concerns regarding donations to ACSTO. Several people I have spoken with are concerned that they won’t get the full credit against their state taxes and therefore have not taken advantage of this opportunity. Because these donations are critical in providing scholarships for our incoming kindergartners, I thought I would publish some frequently asked questions to hopefully encourage those of you who are not donating to consider it in the future.

Why should I donate to ACSTO? Arizona residents can donate to ACSTO and receive a dollar-for-dollar tax CREDIT towards their Arizona tax liability. That means that the total amount that you contribute is then credited towards your tax liability. This is a Credit and not a deduction. Simply put, it’s a way to reallocate your tax dollars to provide scholarships for our kindergartners. Yes, it really works!

I usually receive a refund from the state. Can I still donate? Yes, any Arizona resident may take advantage of this opportunity and receive a dollar-for-dollar tax credit.

Do we get a refund for our donation? Depending on how much you pre-paid in taxes throughout the year, one of several things happen when you

file your state taxes after donating: What you owe is reduced by the dollar amount of your donation, and you pay the difference to the state You overpay on your taxes, and get a refund from the state

When can I donate? You may donate at any time. There are no donation due dates, however all donations must be made by April 15th to be considered for the prior year tax liability. And you may donate several times throughout the year as long as you do not exceed the maximum allowed per calendar year.

Single taxpayers can donate $535.00 along with an additional $532.00 in overflow/PLUS for a total of $1067.00. Married filing jointly can donate $1070.00 along with an additional $1064.00 in overflow/PLUS for a total of $2134.00.

Will I receive a receipt? ACSTO mails receipts and for those who chose to donate online, receipts can be printed shortly after your donation is made.

How do I report the donation on my tax return? Donations for the original tax credit are filed using Arizona Form 323. Donations made for the Overflow/PLUS are filed using Arizona Form 348. Both forms are available from the Arizona Department of Revenue or at www.acsto.org.

Is my donation eligible for a federal deduction? ACSTO is a federally tax exempt 501C3 charitable organization. For federal tax purposes, any deduction must be claimed for the tax year in which the donation was made; the April 15th deadline does not apply. You should consult your tax advisor for specific tax advice concerning deductibility for you.

Can I still take advantage of the public school tax credit? Yes, Arizona residents are eligible to take advantage of both the Private School Tax Credit and Public School Tax Credit.

Can I identify a particular school and/or student to receive my donation? Yes, donations identifying a school will be awarded among applicants from that school. In addition, you may recommend a student who is not your child or dependent to receive your donation. Please be diligent in specifying Beautiful Savior Academy as the recommended school otherwise the funds will go into a general pool and we get very little of those funds considering our small size.

I hope this clears up some of the confusion regarding the Private School Tax Credit. I recently had a friend tell me that he contributed for the first time this

Notes on our Service of Worship

The Prayer of the Day Following the opening parts of the Service, including the Apostolic Greeting, the Kyrie, and the Hymn of Praise is the Prayer of the Day, known in earlier hymnals as the Collect. Perhaps that term better describes the Prayer of the Day, since the prayer “collects”, or gathers, the thoughts relating to the day’s theme into a brief but succinct summary prayer. Each Sunday therefore has its own theme, or focus, or thought. For example, Easter Sunday’s theme is the Resurrection of our Lord, and therefore the prayer naturally draws upon God’s action “this day”.

Liturgical churches such as the Roman Catholic, Episcopalian, and Lutheran, follow a repeating cycle of scripture readings from three gospel accounts: Matthew, Mark, and Luke. The cycle is given the designation A, B, or C, beginning on the First Sunday in Advent, and ending on Christ the King Sunday the following calendar year.

The Prayer of the Day is related to the appointed reading, and prepares us in a way for the lessons which follow.

Retired Pastor Richard Mauthe

year and couldn’t believe how easy it was. He exclaimed; “It really worked! I received a dollar-for-dollar tax credit. I don’t know why I didn’t do this sooner.” Not only does this benefit each of us, but it enables us to continue to minister to young families by providing scholarships to our incoming kindergartners. If you still have questions please contact Arizona Christian School Tuition Organization (ACSTO) at (480) 820-0403. You will also find additional

information at www.acsto.org along with instructions to complete your online donation. For those of you who prefer to mail your donation, brochures are available in the narthex. Please consider making a donation to ACSTO with Beautiful Savior Academy as the recommended school. And don’t forget to spread the word to friends, family and neighbors. Thanks for your anticipated support!

Our fall session begins on Monday August 8th. Space is getting limited! Don’t delay and register today!

PLANNED GIVING

Reasons to Review Your Will or Trust  There are many reasons to review your will or trust on a regular basis. Some major reasons include not having re-viewed your will or trust in the last ten years, a change in family situations, or a change in personal holdings. I would also have you consider the adding of a statement of faith known as a Christian Preamble, or adding a charitable component to your estate plan. Making changes to a will or trust can be expensive if you are not properly prepared. If you are thinking about adding or changing a charitable component to your estate plan, I can help you be prepared for a meeting with your attorney, or show you ways to leave a legacy gift without changing your will or trust. Contact me at 909-910-6823 or by email at: [email protected] Greg Shepherd Regional Gift Planner ELCA Foundation

Life Income Agreements Life income agreements are available for people who want to make an irrevocable gift that will benefit ELCA ministries and congregations after death, while retaining an income interest during life or for a term of years. The ELCA Foundation administers a wide variety of such life income agreements that are in compliance with federal laws and state regulations that govern the issuance and administration of these agreements. These income arrangements include: Charitable Gift Annuities, Charitable Remainder Unitrusts, and Charitable Remainder Annuity Trusts.

Hello Congregation! An update from Vice President Brian Ackerman with highlights from our last meeting. We had a little special business to take care of first. Some of you know that

Toby & Sig Smitt had a 50th wedding anniversary celebration in Werner Hall and the alcohol policy approved. The Property Team asked for approval to replace the emergency exit that was lost in our last expansion. That expense was in the budget and approved. The Personnel Team had to hire a new church secretary. We streamlined the job description and interviewed applicants. Diane Davis was offered and accepted the position. Office Hours were changed a little amd are now 9 am to 3:30 pm M-Th The Finance Team is busy getting things working correctly for us and IRS rules. No big deal, just easier to read! The Marketing Team has a new volunteer: Edie Mauthe The 2017 Festival of Books is available to bring a Lutheran/Christian presence to the event. Some details to work out, maybe other Lutheran Churches also. It's a chance to acquaint the people who stop by with our Beautiful Savior! Peace, Love, and Care Brian

COUNCIL O R N E R

CHURCH COUNCIL meets Sunday 7/31

at 10:30 a.m. in Werner Hall. All are welcome.

The May meeting was short and sweet. The property team discussed that they are working on putting in an additional exit door from the sanctuary and that they are in the process of installing changing tables in the restrooms in Werner Hall. We also discussed some big anniversary dates for Beautiful Savior and the Academy that are coming up. Exciting times! Betsy Korsmo, Council Member

NAVAJO EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN MISSION AND SCHOOL

The Campbell Soup Label program will be discontinued on July 31, 2016. The Mission receives labels from all over the country, and many more are mailed directly to the program headquarters earmarked for the Mission’s benefit. Over the years the piles of carefully clipped labels have added up to at least 8 new vehicles, along with tables, chairs, school supplies, and much, much more. Labels received and recorded prior to July 31 can still count toward valuable resources for the Mission and School. Please advise your label collectors so that everything can be sent in by July 1st. 2016. If you have any questions, contact Pastor Edward Busch @ 626 799 0961. The Campbell Soup Label program has been a God-send to Navajo Lutheran Mission. The benefits to the Navajo people are more than can be numbered. Please accept our sincere gratitude for the many dedicated individuals and congregations who have participated. P.S. You can still send the “box tops for education” from General Mills to Solheim Lutheran Home or the Mission

Thank you, thank you to the members of Beautiful Savior for the opportunity to attend the 2016 Grand Canyon Synod Assembly in Henderson, Nevada. For one day and a morning, pastors, lay members, and visitors, as many as 322, came together at Community Lutheran Church to be charged up by Bishop Steve Talmage to “get moving”. From our stadium seats in the sanctuary, we heard about the churches who were added to the synod this past year and those who had closed their doors. We learned about how 7,000 pastor positions nationwide need to be filled, with only 6,300 seminar graduating seniors to fill those positions. It was pointed out that 50 percent of the churches worldwide are Caucasian, with the common age of 22.

With a bit of business and voting out of the way, it was time to listen to five guest speakers to illustrate the “why” and “how” to get moving. We heard from Mui from Malaysia who, after going from riches to rags, almost gave up finding a church to help her daughter then herself from going astray. We met Kent from Las Vegas, who shared how the church needs to focus on the poor and not the “isms”…racism, sexism. What a difference it would make if each congregation could lift 12 families out of poverty. Ken’s story centered on his stuffed mouse, Squeaky. His food drives started with canned goods in a corner of his church to a room full of bottled water that would put Costco’s weekly supply to shame. A fourth speaker, Scott, talked about how for two hours he laid paralyzed after falling off his motorcycle, when a bicyclist came to his rescue. At the end of his speech, Scott stood up out of his wheelchair to illustrate that he chose to live and tell his story of miracles. Our last speaker was Albert, whose father lost his job when Albert was 13. He shared that because of a Lutheran pastor who went door to door to visit in his South Carolina town, he is now a Lutheran pastor in central Chicago.

After a wonderful lunch around large round tables then more business in the sanctuary, we were given the chance to meet with one of the five guest speakers for ideas to take home with us. Mui from Malaysia shared with my group the things to watch for when looking for a church: The pastor allows the lay people to share. The members are interested in knowing all of the family…kids, too. The members share their mistakes…they don’t appear to be perfect. “What you see is what you get.” Mui shared the flip side: The church wants large membership for more money. The church has its values, and if children don’t respect the values, then the pastor will have a talk with them.

On the second day, we watched on two huge screens a presentation from Bishop Elizabeth Eaton to remind us that: We are the church. We are Lutheran. We are churched together. We are churched for the sake of the world.

After breaking for refreshments and visiting organization tables one last time, a closing Eucharist service was held. Members from the host church shared their time and talents, including a woman soon to be a mother who provided lighting, a pianist whose fingers flew up and down the keyboard, and a soloist whose song of hope was complete with crescendos and diminuendos. It brought tears to my eyes. During Bishop Talmage’s closing message at the synod assembly near Las Vegas, Nevada, my daughter’s definition of a Lutheran was validated: Lutherans are saved by grace. With God’s grace we are set free so that we can do God’s work.

WE ARE FREE, SO GET MOVING! --Linda Claasen

Thanks to Karen Johnsons help we have gotten Thrivent Moneys to buy fabrics for making pillow cases and perhaps draw string bags for toiletries for this great charity that helps Tucson youth stay in school. If you’d like to help out we’d love to have you come join us at Comanche Wells Mobile Home Park (775 W. Roger Road…just west off of Oracle). We meet from 1 to 4 or so at the clubhouse each Sunday and we’re going to use each Sunday in June to do pillow cases etc. Bring your sewing machine and thread (and usual supplies…white or cream or tan thread). If you don’t sew or have a machine you can bring, you can always help with cutting, pinning and ironing! If you happen to have cotton fabrics you don’t want perhaps we could make use of those too. Also we’re collecting toiletries (even motel type sample sizes will work) so if you have any flying around, we’d love to make use of them too. Thanks much, Bonnie Graser

THANK YOU! Your donation to the ICS Food Bank has made a difference in the lives of those in

THANKS! The folks at TIHAN were very appreciative of our care package items collected over Lent. Many people living with HIV/ AIDS in Tucson will be helped. There were so many items that my car was filled! POZ CAFE It is time to think about our participation in POZ Café where 80 or more people affected with HIV/AIDS enjoy lunch and fellowship at Foothills Methodist Church. We are scheduled along with Southside Presbyterian and Good Shepherd UCC- Sahuarita to sponsor, cook, and serve lunch. The activity will put a human face and story on HIV/AIDS and be informational at the same time.

Thursday September 15

8:30 AM -2:30 PM St. Francis in the Foothills Methodist Church 4625 E. River Road (Swan and River) We will share a shopping list with the other churches. After the July TIHAN meeting, I will share details on the actual items and how purchases will occur. 3 additional volunteers are needed. My husband and I will be part of the team.
