April showers bring May flowers. What do May flowers bring? Allergies! Or, if you spell it Mayflowers… Pilgrims! May also brings a lot of other things as well. There is the Germany trip that a number are going on the first two weeks of the month. I look forward to sharing pictures and experiences along the way and when I return. The 17 th will bring a sending service for our graduating seniors from high school, blessing them on their way. The 24 th will be Pentecost (wear red!) and will be Confirmation/Affirmation of Baptism for Anyssa Hemrick, Alex Machado, and Seth Pederson. The 31 st brings our shift to one service at 9am for the Summer. So it may seem that the month of May is a time of wrapping up and winding down. Not quite since the expansion of Jeremy’s hours and the addition of Faith Formation Coordinator to his duties. Starting in June, in conjunction with our monthly Taize’ service, we will add as a trial run, a faith formation event for all ages. On June 3 rd , there will be a Taize’ service at 6pm, followed by a Faith5 based activity for all ages. We are looking at a simple dinner beforehand as well for a time of food and fellowship. Stay tuned for more information on this new thing. The hope is that during the Summer we will develop this in conjunction with the Taize’ service every first Wednesday. Come the Fall, when we move Taize’ to an every week event, we hope to provide a faith formation event every week. We shall see, so first we will try, and see how we can reach out to the community, as well as build up faith across the generations. Speaking of outreach and faith building, I am looking forward to Vacation Bible School, June 22-26 in the mornings. Everest is the theme and it will be a mountaintop experience I am sure! If you can help out in any way, please let Joan Swanson know. May and June (and even beyond that) will prove to be exciting months with amazing possibilities. May we see where God is leading us, and may we find the strength and courage to follow and trust God all the way to the top! Remember that God loves you, and so do I! WHAT’S HAPPENING

Worship with us at 9:00 a.m. beginning May 31st. Two Services resume on September 20th

Taizé is a unique worship experience that is known for its distinct and beautiful style of modern chant and song. Combining a beautiful candlelit ambience with simple meditative prayer, it is a warm and welcoming service to all who search for peace and spiritual reflection. The simplicity of the service makes it an excellent choice for experiencing “church” in a community setting regardless of your faith background. Taizé was created in the 1940s by a monastic community in France and has an international following.

All are invited to experience the simplicity and welcome of the Christian faith. To learn more about the beauty of this service please visit us at www.beautifulsavior.net

CONGREGATION UPDATE

Hello BSLC Congregation, Things are really hopping around Beautiful Savior! We’re excited about the church’s forward direction after the congregational vote to hire Jeremy as a full-time Music and Faith Formation director, as well as to

move forward in searching for an Assistant Director for the Academy. We will be having some fund-raising efforts in the future, and we ask that everyone get involved somehow. If you can raise your giving, that helps, but you can help out at fundraisers and by inviting people, too! After hearing updates on the Solar Project, the council felt that now may not be the time financially to take this project on. We would like to revisit this possibility at a later time. We would like to thank Al Steichen and Don Swanson for all of the work they did in exploring the solar power options. We now have a new, local bookkeeper for the church. The transition has gone smoothly so far. The church-wide cleanup/inventory is nearing completion. The next step will be to get a company to shred old paperwork that was gathered during the clean-up. The Council would like to give a shout out to Jodi Layton and Sandy Guizzetti for their many years of faithful service on the Personnel and Youth teams. They have helped bring us to this point of stability with our staff and we will miss their involvement with these teams as they step down to pursue other interests. Finally, we are looking forward to Worship in the Courtyard on April 26 at 10:30 and Vacation Bible School at the end of June. There is excitement in the air, and lots of ways that congregational members can get involved! Shannon Bryant Living Lutheran

CHURCH COUNCIL meets Monday

May 11, 2015 at 6:00 p.m. Meetings are open to all.

COUNCIL O R N E R

OPPORTUNITIES TO GET INVOLVED! Arts/Activity/Worship Did you like the worship intergenerational activity we did on Easter, or at the early service Christmas Eve? Or some of the other children and adult activities at sermon time? There has been positive feedback and a desire expressed that we would do more. Therefore, we are looking for crafty, creative, and helpful people (don’t need to be all three!) to help create opportunities in regular worship that are meaningful, interactive, educational. Interested in something new? Contact Pr. David if you are interested.

Deacon Program One of the most important things we do as a church is to care for people. Can you listen, visit, pray? Can you carry a communion kit? Beautiful Savior has had Deacons/ Communion Ministers in the past as a way of connecting people. We are looking for those who would serve a shut-in (or two), and those who would be willing to be ‘on-call’ for hospital visits. There is training available that will be offered. If interested, please contact Pr. David.

OTHER WAYS TO HELP

Attention Thrivent Members: You have a couple of other ways to give and be supportive 1. Are you dedicating your "Thrivent Choice" money? 2. Do you know you have TWO $250 Thrivent Action Team opportunities every

year?

The Simply Giving® Program endorsed by Thrivent Federal Credit Union

Would you find it helpful to have your offerings drawn from your bank account as you do other monthly drafts? The Simply Giving Program endorsed by Thrivent Federal Credit Union is for people who wish to have offerings transferred electronically to their church’s account. You do not have to be a Thrivent member or use their financial products to participate.

This is especially helpful for people who travel and want to keep their intended offerings up-to-date, rather than making up the difference later. Members at Beautiful Savior have enjoyed using this convenient giving opportunity for years. Contact the church office for more details. If you changed your pledge for 2015, please let the office know so that it can be adjusted.

Want an easy way to do your commitment? Offerings can be scheduled on-line through Simply Giving.

WEDNESDAY SUMMER FAMILY NIGHT 1st Wednesday of the month starting in June! 5-7:30pm

Food-Fun-Worship-Faith For the whole family (All ages) Stay tuned for more details! If you would like to be a volunteer or leader

please contact our Faith Formation Coordinator, Jeremy Knight, at [email protected]

Since the addition to my job description has significantly grown in the last couple of weeks, I find myself asking the ever important question of, "What are the best ways to implement faith formation for families at Beautiful Savior, while still reaching beyond the doors of this church and into our local community?" That can be a very challenging question, trust me, plenty of books have been written about it. The church is constantly coming up with trendy ways to make themselves attractive. The problem is, the trends and theories usually are location specific and don't always fit the needs and concerns of each community. I believe the answer for this church lies not in the trends, but within who we are. Basically, we need to just be ourselves, but do a heck of a better job at sharing ourselves with those outside our doors. In the 8 months I've been here, I have noticed three things that this church loves to do, is very good at it, and is uniquely you. The first thing is, you love to worship. There is a family atmosphere during our services that is truly beautiful. You can hear it in the music and the words being spoken. Second, you love to fellowship. When there are opportunities to be together outside a service, you all love it. I can see this during LLL, yard sale, quarterly meetings, etc. Third, you love to help people. I have been humbled at the passion of this congregation towards giving back. I can see this in ministries like Jazmyn's Blanket of Hope, Prayer Shawls, Sunday Dollars, etc.

All of the current studies of what the younger generations want in a church are surprisingly not what you would think. They don't want church to be a hipster rock concert. Frankly, we are horrible at that and the "world" will always offer it better than we can. They actually want church to look, sound, and feel like..well...CHURCH! They actually like candles, choirs, pretty memorial gardens, and communion. It makes them feel holy and special to experience something that is intentionally outside of their typical daily lives. They also want to be cared for, have a transformative relationship with Christ, and be challenged to use that relationship to care for others. Guess what, we are GREAT at these things. We have been doing them for over 2,000 years! The truth is, Jesus doesn't need a makeover and the Gift of the Gospel doesn't need to be reimagined. What needs to be reimagined and ‘trendy’ are the ways in which we share this time honored package we call "church" to the world. That is what my job is truly about. I can't wait to coordinate all of the ways in which we can work together to strengthen our ministries at this beautiful place. So stay tuned, awesome things are being planned. Blessings, Mr. Jeremy Knight Director of Music Faith Formation Coordinator

OTHER WAYS TO HELP

May 23, 2015

Plan to join us at 7:00 a.m. in the Memorial Garden for prayers and assignments.

Something for everyone.

YOU CAN ASSIST THE PROPERTY TEAM If you see something that is in need of repair or attention here at BSLC, please fill out a Green Work Order that can be found in the Office Reception area and in the

North Academy kitchen. You can also email [email protected]. We will address the Work Order as quickly as possible.

The Beautiful Savior Property Team would like to thank all of those who helped Saturday, April 11, 2015, by giving their time and talents for completing the drainage piping and installation of the three dinosaurs at the Academy sand playground area. Some who helped were parents and grandparents of students who attend the Academy, a wonderful Boy Scout troop and their two advisors, members of the BSLC Property Team, and members of the congregation. Ditch Witch excavating machines were donated and we received a $250 Thrivent Action Team gift card, which went towards the purchase of better sand surrounding the new playground equipment. Snacks, water, and pizza were provided throughout the day to keep all twenty-five volunteers hydrated and nourished! Again, thanks to all of you who made this a special day with such a wonderful outcome! Special Thanks to Green Valley Decorative Rock 520-625-2550 for helping our money go further.
