VISTAS

SUNDAY WORSHIP AT 9:00 A.M.

TAIZÉ WEDNESDAY

6:00 P.M.

AUGUST 2017

The monsoons have definitely come. According the news, this is the wettest

July on record (as in- ever). The rains have cooled things down. The

humidity is up (and the things it has done to my hair!). We have to watch out

when we are near the washes, and make sure our windshield wipers are

working (and didn’t melt waiting for the rains to come!).

The monsoons, with their moisture, have brought life back to the hills and

surrounding areas. The ocotillo doesn’t look like a dried up mean looking

vine. Various cacti are even blooming, adding bright color to prickly

backdrops.

It also has brought green to places I do not want it. I gleefully gave my

lawnmower to my neighbor in Wisconsin when I moved here, so I have no

desire for a green lawn. Yet with the rain has come the weeds.

Rain is a good thing, and yet there I am going around my yard silently hoping

that it doesn’t rain again and cause more weeds to sprout!

I remember my garden in the Midwest and hoping and praying for rain and

for green shoots to appear, and here I am hoping that it doesn’t rain and I

don’t have to deal with any more growth!

I know that sometimes there are church members who like the blessings of

more people, but don’t want too much more because someone may take their

seat!

Good news, we will be adding another service!

Over the past year, we have stayed at one service on Sunday mornings. We

recently conducted a survey asking for input as to style, time, and other items.

We now need to go through the data and discern how we will go forward

when we add another worship service later this fall.

I am seeking assistance in that matter. If you would like to help sort through

the data and consider how we can best use it, I can use your help! Please let

me know as soon as possible if you would like to serve on the team to put together suggestions to council for

us to move ahead to 2 services this fall.

We may be surprised at how this growth will come, so let us find ways to worship the one who makes the

earth bear fruit, through the Holy Spirit that helps us bear good fruit!

Remember that God loves you, and so do I!

Pastor David

W. Aaron Rice, will be our new part-time Director of Music starting August 1st. He comes to us following completion of a MFA in Composition from the UA. He is a trombonist, has conducted various singing and instrumental groups over the years, and has worked with sign language. He is teaching full-time and will be joining us in the evenings to work with handbells, FUSION, choir, Taize' and then Sundays. Welcome him when you see him and introduce yourself. Welcome Aaron!

Via de Cristo is a four day retreat meant to help each participant grow in their

understanding of God’s grace in Jesus Christ, and consider ways of

responding to that free gift. It also provides a framework for ongoing faith

development. The objective of the movement is to inspire, challenge and

equip local church members for Christian action in their homes, churches and

communities.

The next weekend is a Co-ed weekend, October 12-15 at Tanque Verde

Lutheran Church. The theme is “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to

prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11

Pr. David has agreed to serve as the Head Spiritual director for the weekend. If you are interested in

attending, please see him for more details.

Mountain Vista Unitarian Universalist has started renting space

from us while they are in a building process. On Sundays from 12-

(about 4) they will be using the facility. They are also renting the

old nursery as their office space and as a small meeting room

during the week. Like they did last year, they will use the

conference room on Thursday nights for their choir practice.

This is a wonderful opportunity for us to live out our Vision: "To become a congregation of

committed disciples growing in faith in God, and known in our community for our spirit,

hospitality, and compassion."

Let us welcome them into our space as they continue their journey in faith!

Luther Night at Roadrunner Hockey! Nov. 10th (Luther's Birthday!) the Tucson Roadrunners will be hosting a Luther night when they play the Bakersfield Condors. The first 500 signed up receives a Luther figurine. (I know I am curious to see what it is like!) Tickets are $24. Contact the office if you are interested in going.

ACADEMY NEWS

August is here and that means…its back to school! It’s always bitter sweet to realize that once

again summer has come to an end. However, the excitement of a new school year with new students and

families is always a gift to look forward to.

Our teachers are busy cleaning, organizing and arranging their rooms to begin the school year.

We will hold Parent Orientation on Wednesday August 1st and our “Meet and Greet” on Friday August

4th. Then we will be back in full swing with our first day of school on Monday August 7th. As reported in

our most recent congregational meeting our enrollment is unfortunately a little low at this time. However,

I have been busy over the past couple of weeks touring prospective families. I am hopeful that as we

continue to inch towards the start of the 2017-2018 school year we will see our numbers increase. Please

help us in our enrollment efforts by sharing information about our academy with family, friends,

neighbors and acquaintances. Below is an outline of what we have to offer.

WHAT’S NEW?

Life Line Screening, a leading provider of community-based preventive health screenings, will offer their

affordable, non-invasive and painless health screenings at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church on 9/7/2017.

Five screenings will be offered that scan for potential health problems related to: blocked arteries which is a

leading cause of stroke; abdominal aortic aneurysms which can lead to a ruptured aorta; hardening of the

arteries in the legs which is a strong predictor of heart disease; atrial fibrillation or irregular heart beat which is

closely tied to stroke risk; and a bone density screening, for men and women, used to assess the risk of

osteoporosis. Register for a Wellness Package which includes 4 vascular tests and osteoporosis screening from

$149 ($139 with our member discount). All five screenings take 60-90 minutes to complete.

In order to register for this event and to receive a $10 discount off any package priced above $129, please call

1-888-653-6441 or visit www.lifelinescreening.com/communitycircle or text the word circle to 797979

When Jesus told his disciples, “Come, follow

me,” (Mathew 4:19 NIV), it wasn’t simply a call

for them to follow Jesus on the road. It was an

invitation to life-long discipleship. That meant

learning, listening, and sharing Jesus directly

through his Word. In fact, the definition of

disciple means follower or student.

Diakonia is a call to discipleship. The invitation is to live our lives for Christ, to commune with other Chris-

tians, and to undertake theological learning that will mature our understanding of the Word and carry that

learning to others in love and service.

Begun by a Lutheran pastor to support the work of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA),

Diakonia is offered to both ELCA members and others interested in learning more about their Christian faith.

Currently active in 11 out of 65 ELCA synods.

The Diakonia curriculum, a 2-year program, consists of twelve courses, with six courses offered each

academic year. Weekly assignments and reading are designed to relate subject matter to the students’ context

of life and ministry.

More than a course of study, Diakonia is a chance to heed Christ’s call, to grow spiritually and to commit to a

life-long spiritual journey spent on the road with our Lord.

We are starting a Diakonia school in Tucson this fall. If you are interested, there is an organizational meeting

at Our Savior's Lutheran Church on Campbell, August 7th from 6:30-8. If you are interested, or if you have

questions, see Pr. David.

WHAT’S NEW?

NEW TESTAMENT CLASS

INTRODUCTION TO NT GREEK

The most important document of faith for Christians is the Bible, a compi-

lation of many books, written over many centuries, that relate the activity

of God in the lives of people. The Old Testament, more properly known as

the Hebrew Bible, was written in the language of the people---what we call

today classical Hebrew (with one book, Daniel, written in Aramaic, the

language Jesus would have spoken). The New Testament, the Christian

Scriptures, was written in the common language of the Roman Empire---

Greek, or, more precisely, koiné Greek.

In today’s Service we often use one of the remnants of NT Greek---the Kyrie, which translated means Lord!

(as in addressing the Lord). There are also some snippets remaining we use but don’t often think of: Alpha

and Omega, the Chi-Rho, ihs (which is often translated wrongly as “in his service.”).

A (very introductory) class on New Testament Greek will be offered for six classes this September and

October, beginning on Tuesday, September 12, at 7 PM. The class will consider how Greek influences our

worship traditions and symbols, and especially how Greek deepens our understanding of Scripture. The class

will go over basic vocabulary and simple grammar, and, more importantly, use that basic knowledge to

examine passages from the New Testament.

The class will be taught by Pr. Richard Mauthe. Pr. Mauthe served as adjunct faculty for Hebrew and NT

Greek at the Philadelphia Seminary. Please sign up by The Door in the narthex. A minimum of 5 is needed

to run the class.

Save the Date! Beautiful Savior Academy

Charities will be hosting a Shred-it

event on Saturday, October 21st.

Beautiful Savior Troop 241 attended summer camp at Gorham scout ranch in New Mexico.

Eleven scouts and three leaders all had a great time. The scouts all had busy schedules and

as a troop earned over 45 merit badges, learned a lot of new songs for campfires and made

some great new friends from the Great Southwest Council scouts.

The leaders passed the time helping out on the shooting range , taking pictures etc…

Summer camp was great!

Thanks to everyone at Beautiful Savior that supported the Troop and enabled us to go!

CONGREGATION UPDATE

COUNCIL O R N E R

Highlights of the July Quarterly Meeting

1. Presentations by Pastor David on some of the events of the past quarter, and invitations to get involved with God’s Work Our Hands day September 10th. T-shirts are available to be ordered until August 13th.

2. Our new Director of Music, W. Aaron Rice, will start August 1st. Taize’ will start back up August 9th.

3. Mountain Vista Unitarian Universalist will start renting space from us August 1st. They will be using the campus Sunday afternoons and utilizing the old nursery as an office and small meeting room during the week.

4. Pastor also introduced the opportunity to do a Via di Christo weekend Oct. 12-15th at Tanque Verde Lutheran Church, or to get involved with Diakonia, which is a two year series of classes that will help you learn more and go deeper into faith.

5. The two worship service survey results were presented. Pastor asked for volunteers to assist in sifting through the information and to help come up with a proposal for council.

6. Finances: the summer is a very lean time, but we were able to get through it. Still very tight, so please remember your offering!

7. We needed another member for Church Council to fulfill an incomplete term. Asher Havenhill was elected.

8. Nominating Committee members from the congregation were then elected to help recruit members who would stand for election at the Fall Quarterly meeting for a two year term. Janice Molina and Don Swanson were elected. They will join Colleen McDonald and Mary Perry.

9. Signs of the Spirit was presented to the congregation. It is a sign language ministry that helps people to learn sign language. Some of it could be used to help during our Benedictions in church, or other songs/events in worship, or just done to learn some sign language.

10. The 5 years of Sunday Dollar$ was noted with all of the good that it has done over the years. Amazing what can be done with small bills and willing hearts!

11. A special series of presentations were then done by members of the congregation to share concerns and frustrations.

A. There were concerns over the level of teacher pay at the Academy and the need to look at raising it. There was also a question if the congregation was prepared for all the effects of Prop 206 (passed last year) that included paid sick leave for all employees.

B. There were concerns over a succession plan for Rhonda that involved an assistant director that she would train. That plan is in limbo as the congregation did not retain the services of the assistant director.

C. There were concerns over how the assistant director was not retained and how a proposal to keep her did not come to completion.

D. There were concerns shared about how the mission is lived out through the decision making process, and how historical knowledge is passed on. E. There was a concern raised about having musical instruction for the Academy kindergarten. Our new Director of Music is unavailable during the day. Is there a person

with some musical abilities that would be willing to teach? F. Finally, there was a request to review the Constitution, and the Personnel Handbook, and

see what needed to be updated to both to help us move forward.

Council will meet on Monday, August 21st at 6:30pm

STEWARDSHIP

Recently, we celebrated Pentecost, the descent of the Holy Spirit in the form of

tongues of flames to a group of people in the early history of the church. For the

people of southern Arizona, this time of year is definitely fiery, given the heat and

wildfires in this area.

But the wind and flames felt on Pentecost years ago, were less about scorching heat,

and more about the presence of God somehow working in and through the

people. Any discussion of the Holy Spirit always reminds me of something Martin

Luther (the academic, the theologian, the Priest, the reformer) had to say:

"I believe that by my own understanding or strength I cannot believe in Jesus Christ my Lord or come to him,

but instead the Holy Spirit has called me through the gospel, enlightened me with his gifts, made me holy and

kept me in true faith, just as he calls, gathers, enlightens, and makes holy the whole Christian church on earth

and keeps it with Jesus Christ in the one common, true faith."

If Martin Luther can't believe on his own, then what hope do we have . . . and what does it have to do with

stewardship? It appears that Luther recognized the gifts the Holy Spirit has for us. It is these gifts that are at

the core of stewardship! Stewardship is about recognizing these gifts, and being good stewards of them. That

is to say, putting these gifts to good use to further the will of God. EVERYONE has gifts from the Holy Spirit,

and needs to participate in putting them to good use.

In the book of Galatians, St Paul has a discussion of them. He even makes a list. I like to call Paul's list the

Galatians Top Nine (no, this is not a baseball team!). Paul refers to them as Fruit of the Holy Spirit. The list

reads as follows:

Love, Joy, Peace, Patience (forbearance), Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, Self-Control

We all possess gifts such as these, and they are most useful when they are shared. When we share them, the

Holy Spirit is working in and through us. Is there a better way to be close to God than this? The church and

its ministries are wonderful opportunities to share them. Please prayerfully consider the many ways your gifts

could be shared with the greater community. Thank you.

S.O.S. has completed four weeks of lessons and are now working on a new benediction! And guess what? It is NOT too late to join us. Being part of Signs of the Spirit comes with only two requirements: 1. Have an interest in learning sign language, as it pertains to our service and to the world around us. AND 2. Come to our once weekly meetings on Thursdays at 7:00 p.m.! It is NOT too late to join. You’ll notice that neither of those two requirements include having to get up and sign in front of the congregation! While I hope there will be some members of S.O.S. willing to help present the signed c omponents of our service, anyone who wishes to learn some basic sign language for whatever reason is welcome to join! If you want more information please call Colleen McDonald at 661-4064 or email her at [email protected]. If need be we’ll hold a few short meetings before services on Sundays to catch any newcomers up! If someone needs a ride to the classes please let me know that too; we’ll do what we can to get you here (and back home again!).

IN OUR CONGREGATION

September 10th, 2017!

“God’s work. Our hands.” Sunday is an opportunity to celebrate who we are as the Evangelical Lutheran

Church in America – one church, freed in Christ to serve and love our neighbor.

Service activities offer an opportunity for us to explore one of our most basic convictions as Lutherans: that all

of life in Jesus Christ – every act of service, in every daily calling, in every corner of life – flows freely from a

living, daring confidence in God’s grace.

In years past: we have given out water on street corners; made and took cookies to first responders and

neighborhood places; helped “More Than a Bed” do a cleanup and reorganization; took meals and games to

local SPLASH kids; did a food drive for ICS; toiletries for TIHAN; and lots of other things.

What excites you? It does not need to be an event that can only be done on the 10th.

We are looking for passionate people who want to lead teams to do God’s work with our hands. If you are

interested in helping out in any way, please contact the office.

T-shirts for those who don’t have one yet, or need to replace well loved ones, will be ordered.

T-shirts are $7.25 each. 2XL is $2 more, and if you need a larger size, check with the office.

Cut off for ordering is August 13th!

Some additional ideas:

“My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.” (John 15:12) Show love to your neighbors by do-

nating new sheets (twin, full, and queen). Your generosity makes a big difference for neighbors in need at Lu-

theran Social Services of the Southwest. For our neighbors that have fallen on hard times, it can be hard to afford the basics like diapers. Bring new and

unopened child and adult diapers to benefit Lutheran Social Services of the Southwest!

Items that Lutheran Social Services of the Southwest are especially in need of

Bus passes

Bottled water

New sealed personal hygiene items (shampoo, conditioner, soap, deodorant, razors, lotion, sun screen,

tooth brush and toothpaste)

Fans

Kitchen supplies

Faith in Action

2017

"The apostles gathered around Jesus, and told him all that they had done and taught. He said to them, 'Come

away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest a while.' "

(Mark 6:30-31)

I just spent two days sharing time with middle-schoolers, adult leaders and pastors at Lutheran

Campfirmation in Payson. It is amazing to observe the power of environment. Many of the youth come

from congregations that do not have large numbers of their age group, but at camp they can see others who

share a common faith. The laughter, the chatter, the high energy devoted to the outdoor games and

activities is contagious and helps to rejuvenate an old soul like me.

In visiting with congregations seeking a new pastor they almost always are hopeful that the new pastor will

have the charisma and magic formula that will draw in young people and families with children. In most

cases, this is an illusion that I speak truth to, but one thing I do believe that has the power to change lives

and connect children and youth with Jesus for the rest of their lives is the opportunity to get away from the

familiar and busy schedules they experience and simply spend a week at camp. There is just something that

happens to folks when they sing praise songs to Jesus throughout the day, share a common meal, play

together and pray together.

Thanks to all the congregations, leaders, parents and grandparents who encourage the youth and children

we do have to go to bible camp, and thanks to all those who give of their time to support these precious

gifts from God with their presence and living witness.

Blessings,

Steve
