About twenty years ago my Dad passedaway and left us a small amount of money. My wife said I should use this to purchasethe sports car I always wanted, a MGTD.Of course my Dad, being an old Yankee, would have wanted to know why wewould waste our money on a foreign carwhen one made in the USA would be alot better. My Dad drove a Chevette. Wesearched and went to auctions but couldnot find anything in our pricerange. As I said my Dad left onlya small amount of money. I thenran across a 1953 MGTD replica. The whole idea of buying a carwas to get something we couldenjoy. It was in our price rangeso we bought it, ran and enjoyedit for eight years investing only ina new carburetor and tires. Wenever worried about rain, dings orsomeone stealing it.

During that time we had gone toseveral company sponsoredChristmas parties and each timeI was approached by a friend of a friendwho had heard that I had a sports car

and he was thinking aboutselling his Morgan andwould I be interested. Atthat time I did not know any-thing about Morgans andwas not really interested plusI did not have the free cashto invest in another car. Theowner informed me that hehad bought the Morgan as abarn-find and had done a bitof work to it. He had ownedit for about twenty-fiveyears but it had sat unused in his garagefor the last five years. He was not inter-ested in putting more money into it andhad decided that the time had come tosell. He wanted it to go to someone who

would appreciate it. During this time, myjob position had improved as I had be-come a part owner of an injection mold-ing business. So after five years (Christ-mas parties) and some research, I agreedto take a look at it and if I was interestedI would make a onetime-only offer. Twoweeks later I was bringing the Morganhome (February, 1999). I decided I wouldclean it up and run it through the summerbefore painting it in the fall.

Coming home from a car show that sum-mer I was introduced to SU carburetors.Driving along, I could smell gas. I openedthe hood and I saw gas pouring out of thetop of the SUs. The needle valve wasstuck open so I quickly shut off the en-gine and stood there a bit dumb founded.I did not bring any tools as I had assumedit was not supposed to break down, so Idid what any great mechanic would do. I

found a rock and tapped on the carbure-tors. This worked and I proceeded to drivethe remaining ten miles home with my nosein the air sniffing for the smell of gas. Thiswas the last time I was without tools or a

fire extinguisher.

I remember the first time thatI went to the High Hopes show, before the car was restored. Idrove by and parked in thespectator’s parking lot since Idid not think the Morgan wasgood enough for a car show.At that time I was not a mem-ber of BCNH. I soon learnedthat the show was in apprecia-tion of British cars and peoplelike to see what you have re-gardless of condition. I joinedBCNH at that show and havebeen an off/on member ever

since (a couple of times I forgot to sendmy dues).

In late September of 1999 we startedgetting the Morgan ready for paint. Oncethe wings (fenders, I love these Britishnames) were taken off it was plain to seethat it would need more than paint in or-der to make it look good. So, the Morganwas stripped down to the frame. Theframe was completely disassembled andsandblasted, by hand, by me in a make-shift tent inside my garage. If you haveever sandblasted then you know that nomatter how many times you shower andchange there always seem to be somesand tucked somewhere in your body fora long time. All of the disassembled parts

Prime Minister’sMusings

As we segway from a May (which hadgray skies between rain storms), to June(which seems to be continuing the sameweather pattern), I hope that you are tak-ing advantage of the rare sunny days driv-ing your British cars, even if it is just togo to work or to pick up some groceries.Personally, I have used my British car

despite the weather (they seem to runbetter in English weather).

I have a feel-good mood when I changeover from using the daily driver to “thespecial car”. I am sure that you have thesame. So, when you plan to go somewheremundane consider taking your “specialcar”, just for the fun of it.

At the last meeting we talked about start-ing a library. Peter Bland suggested that, rather than having a centralized library,we could have a member-to-memberlending system. If you are interested insharing what books/videos that you havewith your fellow members, LindaPendleton ([email protected]) hasvolunteered to start a list. E-mail or snail-mail your name along with the title, au-thor, and type of media (book, pamphlet, brochure, VHS, DVD, audio tape).

Well, that’s all I have for now. I’m Look-ing forward to seeing you all in your Brit-ish Iron out on the road!

Minutes

Director Wade called the June BCNHmonthly meeting to order at 7:00PM.There were no new members in atten-dance. But, there were 29 old membersas well as about 8 LBC’s in the parkinglot at the Weathervane. First topic of dis-cussion was the newsletter – WE NEEDARTICLES ! Please contact John Gieseor Lin Pendleton with your articles. Theyespecially need “Car of the month” ar-ticles.

The May minutes were accepted asprinted (go figure), as was the treasurer’sreport (yes, we have money). BobMitchell talked about the vendor and ser-vices list he is collecting for publicationon the BCNH website. Need a resource? You’ll be able to find it there! DianaStanley provided the Show of Dreamsupdates. We have 24 cars registered, aswell as 25 people are signed up for theWinnie Belle cruise. Thirteen people havesigned up for that scrumptious breakfaston the field. We have T-Shirt sponsors -SNG Barrett and Lovering Volvo. Wehave quite a few class sponsors and showsponsors at the $100 level. We also havevendors signed up. Meredith Village Sav-ings Bank and the Windrifter Resort paidfor our ad in the Weirs Times! If you knowof a company that you think might be ableto sponsor the show let us know. We willfollow up!

We need 2 raffle items per member fam-ily. If you can’t bring them to the showthen please bring them to one of the meet-ings and we’ll transport them for you. Youcan also call one of us and we’ll comepick them up.

Fun Masters Ginger and ChrisChristiansen have an “obstacle” course

planned for the event as well.

Dave LeBlanc gave us an update on theConcours d’Elegance that was held inNewport, Rhode Island last month. It waswell worth the drive and there were quitea few collectors showing their very high-end cars. Maybe they’ll come toWolfeboro! Sounds like a road trip for nextyear.

Bob Hartson attended the show at AmeliaIsland in Florida. His car was one of about20 Allards at the show. He took first placein the streetcar Allard class with his beau-tiful Palm Beach that he brings to ourshows. Make sure you take a good lookthis year! This concours requires a 50-mile drive to prove the road ability of thecars that are entered. Great work and

were cleaned, sandblasted and painted.

Then work was started on the body. Acomplete leather interior was orderedfrom England ($$$). We worked almostevery night and weekend because wewanted to get it ready for the road by July2000. The motor was sent to Brit Bits fora complete rebuild and balance ($$$).Gauges were sent out for restoring ($$$).

Wire harness and who knows how manyother things were ordered so nothingwould slow us down when we were readyto assemble ($$$). The hardest part aboutthe body work was the wings. Keep inmind that they are about eight feet longand, off the car, they do not lay flat. Thebulkhead had some rust issues thatneeded to be cut out and replaced but thetub and rear fenders just needed sanding. The wood frame work (note the write upin March’s The Boot, Hood & Bonnet –How to build a Morgan) was in prettygood shape. One of the most feared crea-tures to a Morgan is the Termite, but nonewere found.

After the body, wings, and other partswere painted, the fun part began. Every-

thing had to be put back together. Duringdisassemble all parts were marked, bagged or boxed. Pictures were taken.Any diagrams or other information that Icould find on line was included. As muchas I told myself, when taking the carapart, that I would remember how it goestogether I couldn’t. It took most nights, every weekend and holidays to get thisfar and by the end of July it was running. We took it on a road test and it ran likecrap! I pulled over to the side of the road, opened the hood and stared at the engine.I tried to look intelligent, waved to thepeople that blew their horns or gave thethumbs up but prayed no one would stop.Nothing seemed out of place or leakingbut when I applied power the engine justran rough. I checked to make sure it wasgetting gas and it was. It had to be anelectric problem. I pulled a plug wire andchecked for spark and that was OK. Inext looked at the book on firing order. That was OK but found that I had setupthe wires in reverse to the distributor ro-tation. I am not sure if the glow from myred face slowed traffic but it seemed to.Once I corrected the wires we were off,top notch.

Since then we have had some “memo-ries”. For instance, there was the time,2003 I think, that I was making a left handturn into a driveway. I was going too slowfor the kid on the motorcycle a few carsbehind me. He pulled out to pass (overthe double yellow line) just as I started toturn and he ended up laying his motor-cycle down and sliding into me. He waswith a group of motorcycles and hestarted yelling to them about how it wasmy fault. Then the fellow in the pickupright behind me told me to stay in my car

as he had called the police. He saw ev-erything that had happened. The driverof the motorcycle was cited and the dam-age to the Morgan was minimal. $1850.00later (from his insurance company) theMorgan was back looking like new.

During the next ten years the Morganspent just about every summer weekendat car shows. Then it was trips throughthe mountains in the fall. This past sum-mer we started going to cruz night a coupleof time a week. For some reason Britishcar folks in our area seem to stay awayfrom these cruz nights. We love thembecause we always seemed to get awarm reception. I have found that atmany classic car shows, if there is a for-eign car class it seems to be tucked in acorner some place and it is close to lastwhen it is time to call for trophies. But, Ihave also noticed that in the last coupleof years this class has really grown innumbers. At Rye and BSA in Straffordthere had to be at least fifteen plus carsin the British class. I think we are be-coming a class to be reckoned with.

Our Morgan is not a trailer queen. It isdriven. But, it did take 1st place in 2001 &2nd place in 2002 at the British Invasionand we were invited to show at theMohegan Sun in 2003 as one of CruzinClassics magazine’s top 100 cars in New

England. Over the years scratches androad chips have appeared so the wingswere sent out to be refinished this year atNortheast Auto Body (603-312-8485,Shawn Libby). The interior was removedand I am now fixing several things thathave bothered me.

A restoration project is never finished. There is always some improvement thatyou would like to make from a simpleshinny bit to a major redo. All you need islove, desire and $$$$.

If you see a red and black Morgan goingdown the street with a Jack Russell Ter-rier in back, that’s me. The Jack Russell, her name is Midge, was at High Hopes in2009 and several car shows in 2010. Sheloves to ride.

I think it is important to note that without

the support of my wife and daughter Iam not sure if this dream would have be-come a reality. The Morgan has been trulya pleasure to drive and show. Thank youto all that have stopped to admire our carsand to share their own car stories.

Feel free to contact me with any ques-tions, [email protected]

Thank you for taking the time to readabout our cars.

Note: We sold the MGTD replica for$1000.00 more than we paid for it. Eightyears of fun, $450.00 in parts and we stillmade a profit. Probably the only car I cansay this about.

Then we willtravel on to about a 2-mile stretch ofRoute 9 and South on Route 123through historical Hancock. This is

We will then turn toward Peterboroughalong my second favorite road in town.It has a jaw dropping view of the moun-tains and fantastic post and beam home.We will end back at Depot Square.

If anyone should care to, we can thengo down Route 123 and across toTemple to the Birchwood Inn.JoanMiller is usually at the Cruz-In with oneof her original cars, a Morgan, racingMGJ2 and an MGTC. 1st SundayDinner Drive

Well, the day of our first Sunday DinnerDrive came up with perfect BritishWeather for a British Car Drive. It rained, long and hard.

The drive was officially postponed to thefollowing weekend (from May 15 to May22). Since I would be in St. Louis on the22nd, I didn’t want to miss out on “thedrive” so I went anyway. Much to mydelight, I was not alone. Our new mem-ber Al Reynolds (from whom I bought myMG-TD) wanted to try out his recentlyacquired 2004 Jaguar S-Type. So he camealong on the drive with me.

We learned a couple of things right away:

1. The right hand turn signal (andstop light) on my Mark IX Jaguar did notwork. Al said that following me on lefthand turns was just fine, but right handturns were always a bit of a surprise.

2. I learned that – although youwould think that an English car would bebuilt for English Weather, the Jag’s wind-shield wipers hardly worked at all – andthe defroster just plain didn’t.

But neither of those things kept us fromenjoying the wonderful route that Tim andJoan Young had laid out for us.

The route took us up past LakePawtuckaway; through Deerfield; aroundBow Lake. In Barnstead we past some

beautiful gardens and then we continuedthrough Gilmanton Iron Works and Alton. We drove past the lower portion of LakeWinnipesaukee and on up to Patrick’ Pubin Gilford. At Patrick’s we met up witheight other members that decided to waituntil better weather to make the drivewhen they could more fully appreciate it– but still didn’t want to miss out on the“excuse” to go out for dinner with theClub.

Patrick’s Pub was every bit as good as

advertised and all present had a wonder-ful time.

If this drive happens in the fall and youhaven’t made up your mind yet aboutgoing on this drive, I strongly recommendthat you do. If it is as good as it was inthe pouring rain, it should be truly delight-ful on a “good day.”

Get those LBCs out and drive them!

Fly Fishing Anyone?

by Diana Stanley

The weekend of June 11th & 12th markedthe 25th Anniversary of the ManchesterAntique and Classic Car Show inManchester, VT.

So, several weeks ago, six of us decidedto book rooms and make the trip. (Rod

Folia, Norma, Paul & Doris Karle & Bob& Diana Stanley)

The day started early for us as we neededto travel from Barnstead, NH to Milford,NH to meet up with the group. Ordi-narily, the trip should have taken us a hourand a half but, after missing the turn forRoute 13 in Goffstown, we had to takeRoute 114 which brought us into Bedford. So, the trip took us two hours.

The weather was beautiful and warm; aperfect top down day (convertible top thatis, in case you had visions of something

else).

We arrived in Manchester at our hotel at4pm just in time for cocktails, which weproceeded to enjoy immensely.

Our personal experience with theManchester, VT show was two years ago, with 90 degree temperatures, high humid-ity and no shade to be had anywhere. So,we were expecting pretty much the same.We watched the weather reports whichsaid it was going to be cloudy with a pos-sibility of showers and we spoke to thehotel owner upon arrival about the accu-racy of the local weather reports. Shetold us not to rely on them because theywere usually wrong (can anyone spelltourist? I bet they also claim that the ski-ing is still good.) With that optimistic view,we went out to dinner to enjoy the eveningat a nice Mexican restaurant. More cock-tails involved because Bob Mitchell insistswe are a dining club.

For those of you who have not been toManchester, VT, it is a picture perfectNew England town with some beautiful,well-kept antique homes, hotels, B&Bsand public buildings. A post card pictureat every turn. Plus, it is the home of Orvisand the Orvis Fly Fishing School.

The downtown area and all the restau-rants were filled with car owners. Wehad the opportunity to see a beautiful ex-ample of a “Brass & Gas” era car parkedon a side street. If you think you have alot to care for with your car, think aboutpolishing all that brass.

After seeing some of the sites, we headed

back to the hotel for some much neededrest after our long road trip.

As we pulled into the hotel parking lot wesaw a TR6 go right past the driveway. We thought it was Rod, in race car drivermode, missing the turn, again! To oursurprise, it was a 1973 Magenta TR6owned by Craig and Connie TerBush from

NY. They attended the Show of Dreamslast year and noticed us as they passedby and decided to stop in to chat.

On Saturday morning we were all readyfor breakfast at 7 am where we proceededto order Mimosas, never mind where, wedon’t want to get them into trouble. Ap-parently, you aren’t allowed to serve al-cohol before 8 am in the State of VT.

After breakfast, we checked our cars fordamp spots (aka puddles). The cars man-aged well during the night. However, it

remained to be seen if they would staydry for the rest of the day. Off we wentto Dorr Farm for the show.

When we arrived it was raining and theroadway into the show field was alreadymuddy. The parking attendants directedus through the bad spots and onto the field. We were well equipped with a canopyand immediately, pulled it out of the bootand assembled it. Now, at least, we hada place to stand that was semi-dry.

Bob & Doris, armed with their Droids, kept vigil on the weather radar hoping tofind us “On The Edge” of the storm atsome point during the day.

For the time being we huddled under thecanopy with Craig & Connie & theirfriends from New Jersey.

The rain was not letting up at all. In fact,it was pouring. The field entrance wasgetting worse and the owner of DorrFarm began bringing in loads of gravel tofill in some of the muddiest spots. As10:30 am approached, we noticed someof the cars in attendance decided to leave.Who could blame them? At this point,we were all wishing we had brought “Wellies”. Since we hadn’t, Norma, Dorisand I decided to desert the sinking bassboat, get on the show provided shuttle busto town and “go shopping”. What elsewas there to do? After all, Rod was freez-ing and needed a sweatshirt!

Rod, Paul & Bob stayed on the field, steadfast in their duty to walk the field, talk cars, and hand out the Show ofDreams flyers we brought with us.Good Lads!

After shopping, retrieving the guys fora trip into town for lunch and more shop-ping, we decided that we had hadenough of pouring rain, wet feet andcold weather. So, we headed back tothe hotel for some rest, cocktails ( ofcourse) and dry shoes. Our eveningwas spent at a great Italian restaurantfollowed by early “good nights” to all.

Sunday morning brought more optimism,as the weather reports said the daywould be cloudy with fewer showers. So, at 7 am we headed out for break-fast at the Rooster Cafe. Rememberthat rule about no alcohol before 8 am?Well, sad to say, there were no Mimo-sas on Sunday morning. The cafe wouldnot serve them and besides that, theyran out of champagne (honestly, weeven waited until after 8 am, but no suchluck.)

We arrived at the field to find lots moregravel , but we decided to take the longway around to get to our designatedparking spots. We also decided not toput up the canopy seeing there weresome bright spots in the sky.

The new day brought out all the ven-dors. According to Rod, there werefewer in attendance than in previousyears, but, at least they were able toopen.

We set up our chairs and parked our-selves behind the cars to relax. Theshow included a great car trivia game. Most of the questions were focused onthe two featured marques, Corvette and

Mercedes. The questions were linked tosmall prizes and were really interesting. The people’s choice voting ended at 1 pmwith trophies to be presented at 2. Oneo’clock also brought the rain. By 2:15the awards ceremony had not started andthe “natives were getting restless”. Fi-nally, they began the announcements.Luckily, our class DD1(British Non-MG1970-1986) was near the top of the list.

We are pleased to announce that Connie& Craig TerBush from New York werepresented with 1st place for their 1973TR6. Bob and I were presented with 2ndplace and Paul & Doris were presentedwith 3rd place in our class. It was agood showing for BCNH.

Our drive home took us through a detouror two and some rough roads but wemanaged to get to Henniker where weparted ways to go North to Barnstead andRod & Norma, Paul & Doris headedSouth and West. The weekend was greatfun and we had a good time despite theweather.

P.S. The next time we attend theManchester Antique & Classic Car Showwe will surely plan to bring our hip wad-ers and fishing gear and a attend a classat the Orvis Fly Fishing School. We willprobably find ourselves in much drier con-ditions while standing in the river than wedid at the Dorr Farm field!
