BCNH Car RallyIreland

Ten brave and thirsty BCNH club mem-bers embarked on an epic adventure tothe Emerald Isle.

We all signed up for a car rally with“Great Road Journeys” to drive themiddle and north of Ireland. We flew intoDublin and rented cars for our tour.Note: the cost of the insurance was more

than the cost of the rental for ten days.Bob and Kim D. shared a BMW X5with Daine and I (SUV) that, along withdriving on the left side of the narrowroads proved a challenge to our drivingskills. Bob seemed a bit nervous because

when a truck was coming our way hewould exclaim“TRUCK…..TRUCK……TRUCK!!!,nearly causing a laundry problem. Ourfirst hotel, “The Royal Marine”, a fourfive star hotel, was in the seaside townof Dun Laoghaire. The Prime Minister(here after to be addressed as “Lord of

Inishowen” ) and Kim flew into Dublinas did Dennis and Prebble Eklof. NormaKarle, Rod Folia, and Bob and DianaStanley of us took the train to Dublinwhere we booked passage on the hop-on hop-off double decker buss. We vis-ited Saint Patrick’s cathedral, the DublinCastle, the Guinness, and the Jamesonwhiskey factorys. We may have stoppedat a pub or two as well.

The Second day we had a short driveto Powerscourt House and Gardensvoted one of the top ten houses and gar-dens in the world. We continued onthrough the Wicklow Mountains toKildare to the Irish National stud farm.

Dia dhuit! In case you don’t know, thatis how you say hello in Gaelic, but bewarned; it doesn’t pronounce anywhereclose to how it is spelled!!! Should yousay it to someone how it is spelled, youjust might be telling them they have amonkey up their nose! To pronounce itcorrectly you must say “Jee-ah ghwitch”And that’s just how to say hello, youdon’t want to know how to carry on aconversation, your head may explode!Needless to say, I didn’t even try Gaelicwhile in Ireland; I was far too intimatedto give it a go. Thankfully, the road signswere in both Gaelic and English, hadthey only been in Gaelic I’d still be driv-ing in circles! Bob Mitchell called the meeting to or-der at 7:00 pm with 40 members inattendance. First and foremost, wehave some very sad news to reportregarding Betty and Peter Bland. Thisparticular meeting may have beenBetty’s last official meeting withBCNH. On August 8th, 2019 PeterBland had passed to heaven. BothBetty and Peter had a strong mem-bership with BCNH for 20 years.Betty now plans to spend some ofher time in Chicago where she willhave plenty of family to help keep herbusy. BCNH extends their sincerecondolences to Betty and family, andwe wish Betty well as she moves for-ward. It goes without saying, anytimeBetty is back in the Granite State weall welcome her at any BCNH event.Bob announced the treasurer’s re-port- sounded like “ALL” accepted.New member Nick Masi joinedtonight’s meeting. Nick got the “Brit-ish bug” over 45 yars ago, and keepsa 1970 MGBGT wheeling on theNew England roads. Welcome Nick,to British Cars of New Hampshire.

The Amherst Lions Club held anevent on, unfortunately a rainyweather day and reported only 5

Well I know I have missed some detailsin these minutes I was hoping Pinchwould fill in the blanks for me at themeeting-however, he had a “old-new”pen that would not cooperate. TypicallyNorma handles the minutes-but she wasoff on the same wild vacation as a fewother club members toasting their IrishAle’s in Ireland! Here we learned about the world ofthoroughbred race horse breeding. Wecontinued on to the prettiest village inIreland. The next day found us drivingto a small village of Foynes where wevisited the Pan American Flying BoatMuseum which was sponsored byMaureen O’Hara in tribute to her hus-band who was one of the first pilots ofthe boats. The town is famous for in-

venting the Irish coffee. After the bril-liant and fascinating museum we con-tinued our drive to a ferry across theShannon River and along the wild At-lantic way to the spectacular cliffs ofMoher. Although the weather was typi-cally Irish, rain and mist, the view wasimpressive. Jumping back into our carsand remembering to look right and driveon the left we continued to the city ofGalway. We were within walking dis-tance of the town center and youguessed it PUBS! After a breakfast se-lection that included a Full Irish Break-fast of eggs, bacon, bangers, tomato, black pudding, mushrooms, and toast

we departed on the next leg of our rallyto Croach Patrick a 760 meter peakwhere in 441 AD saint Patrick, fastedfor 40 days each year. Many of the faith-ful pay homage by walking up the peak

in bare feet each year. This year in Julythey had 25,000 visitors. At the base ofthe Mountain were a statue of St Patrick

and a sculpture of a ghost ship in remem-brance of the people who died leaving

Ireland to escape the famine. Driving onto Westport we visited the National Mu-seum of country life. The next stop wasthe last working mine in Ireland. We were

escorted by a retired miner. The mineclosed in 1990 except for the tours givenby these pensioned off miners. Hebrought us through the mine and showedus the working conditions and how they

brought the coal out. It was a very diffi-cult line of work but they were glad tohave it as the pay was quite good. Soonwe entered Northern Ireland. The next

lodging was a grand affair. Five star ho-tel located on a specular golf course onthe edge of Lough Erne. We met in thepub (surprise) for a before dinner drinkand then had the most wonderful meal.We departed the grand hotel and brieflypassed back into Ireland to see the cliffsof Slieve League, three times the height

We were booked at the City Hotel. Wewalked on the oldest walled city in Eu-rope. We then drove to the GiantsCauseway to see some fantastic rockformations rising out of the sea. Some

of the group visited the Bushmills Distill-ery. We continued our drive to Belfastwhere a small fleet of taxis took us to “The

Troubles” to see the wall that still dividesthe Catholics from the Protestants. Al-

though the fighting stopped 20 years agothe wall remains and the gates are closedevery night at 10:00 pm. We toured theTitanic Museum on the very spot that it

was built. It took 1,500 laborers 26months to build. We spent over twohours in the museum. we had a drink inthe building where they drew up the plans

Wings & Wheels

Three cars (with 4 members and oneguest) met at 9:30 am at The FlyingGoose in New London, NH for thedrive to “Wings and Wheels” put to-gether by Sugarbush Soaring in War-ren, VT. Rick (a grade-school friend ofKarl’s) and Ginny Hanson hosted theevent. The ten dollar admission gavemembers a 10% discount on glider ridesas well as live band entertainment.Burgers or hot dogs, salad, dessert, abeverage and chips could be had for afive dollar donation and show cars en-trants (car or plane) were given a chanceto win people’s choice awards. Freeflights were raffled off as well as “T”shirts and the local brew pub was setup to offer four different drafts.

Wil Smith in his MGB from Hennikerjoined Nancy Rousset, and Karl, Kellieand Emily Timm (their daughter) for thetrip. The soaring was spectacular dueto strong up-drafts, high barometricpressure and clear skies making it pos-sible to see New York, New Hampshire

and Canada from over 5000 feet up.Karl’s pilot, Alex, even gave him the thrillof two wing-overs and zero-Gmanuevers. Planes (an awesomeWACO) and cars (nice Packard road-ster) from the fourties and fifties as wellas a modern kit Cobra and a kit stuntplane were all available for inspection.A long day and a lot of fun was had byall.

Northern Council Meeting Minutes

After taking the last two months, Julyand August, off from formal meetings wegathered once again at the HomesteadRestaurant in Bristol for the Septembermonthly meeting. Marty Grover did thehonors of bringing the knock off ham-mer down at 7:00pm and Minister Karlstarted off with announcing “No Quiz”this month; to which several membersresponded to bring the quiz back fornext month’s meeting.

Karl brought along a few older tools thathe had acquired from Sally Small. Sheand her husband Ron from Franconia,NH, had attended a BCNH meeting acouple of years back. Ron had passedaway in May, 2019. Ron owned andoperated Sports & Classic Cars ofLittleton, NH, from 2002-2016 and hada variety of cars, memorabilia and tools.

Page 11: BCNH Car Rally in IRELAND - TDSpersonalpages.tds.net/~johgie/bcnh/BCNH newsletter 10-19.pdfAug 08, 2019  · five star hotel, was in the seaside town of Dun Laoghaire. The Prime Minister

11

After the tools had been passed aroundthe room, we discovered that we still didnot know much about the applicationsfor them.

Moving on Alan & Judy Ballard (sanstimer, inside joke) talked about the tripthis summer to Simon Pearce inQuechee, VT. They enjoyed the wind-ing back roads that popped us out in themiddle of Hanover on the green ofDartmouth College, it was a great trip.Mark & Linda Heminway introduced usto the newest member of their family, abeautiful bright red Lotus Elan. PeteWirth also remarked on what a greatsummer it has been for so many differentdrives both by LBC and motorcycle. Healso shared a funny story (well funny now,but not at the time) about losing the clutchpedal while out for a drive. He couldhave sworn there was three pedals whenhe started the drive. Larry Rowe talkedabout his first trip to the British Invasionwhich ran from September 13th – 15th,so many cars and so little time to appre-ciate them in one afternoon.

Paul Ardito was pleasantly surprised tosee his 1967 Jaguar XKE tracked on theJag1 website. Paul also shared a frus-trating but ingenious tale of losing athrottle-shaft nut off of his Corvair whileon a drive, actually finding said nut andputting it back on only to have it fall offagain a few miles down the road. Nosuch luck as finding it a second time buthe ended up using a bungee cord as atemporary fix to get him to his destina-tion. Bob Doc shared a few details fromtheir recent trip (with several otherBCNH members) to Ireland. Just atease, the rest of the story will be in TheBoot, Hood and Bonnet; sounds like anamazing adventure! Bob also shared hisfrustration with trying to replace a flat tire

on the MG TD and where to buy tube-type tires. This conversation turned intoa tubeless versus tube-type tire tech ses-sion and Karl tapped the knock off ham-mer to move the meeting along.

Marty & Elliot had a couple of handoutsfor the members, one being a very sea-son appropriate cartoon about applepicking. The other was all the details fortheir 1953 MGTD 27565 which is forsale and the 1948 MGTC is currentlyon Bring-A-Trailer. Mary Flaherty, whowas interested in all this conversationabout selling cars jokingly said theyshould sell all of Neil’s cars so she couldhave her parking spot back in the ga-rage.

Bob M. said he would love to do thewaterfall tour again and Karl and I knowa friend who works for the State, “Danthe Dam Man” who might be able to findout when the water would be flowingagain at a higher rate so we could moni-tor the best time to view the power ofthe river.

Dave and Sally Swartz who could notmake the meeting but would like to do agroup cookout again next summer in lieuof a meeting for either July or August;more info to come on that.

Kellie reviewed upcoming events on thecalendar and Bob Doc mentionedBentley’s Saloon car show that is hap-pening this weekend in Arundel, Me.This led to a few other items that hadpopped up on the calendar; which is al-ways changing and adding new eventsso please check it often! When you geta chance, check out the fantastic videothat Sue McDuff posted on the BCNHFacebook page with all the cars comingthrough the covered bridge.

The hammer came down at 8:10 pm andfolks bundled up for the cool, top downride home. And what a ride, all you hadto do was tip your head back and enjoythe stars, what a sight!

Northern Council Meeting MinutesContinued from page 10

We will be continuing to hold the North-ern Council meetings at the HomesteadRestaurant, until they kick us out for be-ing too rowdy. It’s a good thing we haveour own room with a door we can close.

Write it in your own word (don’t worrywe have many people that review thenewsletter for spelling, grammar, etc.).It should be 1000 to 1500 words. In-clude two to four photos of the car.Front, back, side, motor, interior, resto-rations etc.
