Car of the Month

Molly and MeBy Sheryl Jabre

BCNH e-mailed looking for a short storyabout my British Car. You know the drill,“What kind of car do I have, where did Ifind it, why did I go looking and so on?”Well I will attempt to not bore you. Hereis my short story (they asked for fifteenhundred words minimum; so blame theCommittee if I do bore you) about Mollyand Me.

I happened upon this British car thingthrough a dear friend, Judy Pevine. Youmay know her. She has been a Britishcar enthusiast and member of British Carsof New Hampshire for a number ofyears. Judy asked me to join her on aride last fall with her British car club. Ihad seen her car already and thought itwas just as cute as a button. But, if I amgoing to be completely honest, in the backof my mind I was thinking, “British carclub? Are they going to be stuffy, snottypeople with expensive toys?” Well, thisis far from the kind of person Judy is so Isaid, “Sure! I will ride in your cute littlecar with you for the day.”

We met at her house and then proceededto drive to Raymond, New Hampshirewhere we met up with other membersfrom her car club. It was a glorious sunnyfall day and it started with breakfast at aquaint restaurant in Raymond and fol-

lowed with instructions, in front of an an-tique railroad car, about the day’s activi-ties. We were going on a tour of the lo-cal railroad stations while working on amurder mystery, complete with a cast ofcharacters in costume played by mem-bers of the BCNH. What a fun day in-deed! These were not stuffy people at alland they each had a British car that wasas unique as they were.

I have always been an autoenthusiast. I have had theAmerican Muscle Cars: a1967 Mustang, a 1979 Cor-vette and even a 2004 Mus-tang GT as an everydaydriver. Don’t get me wrong, Itruly enjoy automobiles and, even though I do not fully un-derstand the complexity of asouped-up power train, I en-joy the ride and the knowl-edge that if I had to get some-where fast I could. But let’sbe honest. What is all thispower good for if you can notuse it? I mean, unless you are going togo to driving school and put these cars ona race track, you can never use all thepower they have unless you are willing topay for enormously expensive speedingtickets and loose your driving license alltogether.

But these little British cars; nowthey fascinated me. The sim-plicity of their engine compart-ments (I could lift the hood andidentify parts and my husbandcould actually work on them). The memories they invoked! These were the cars all the boyswanted, and what I wished forwhen I was young. But, theywere elusive to many. Just look-ing at the different models I sawon this one trip had meooohhhing and aaahhing. A oneday ride with my friend Judy and

her car club friends was all it took. Iwanted one!

As it is with many things in life, the huntis one of the best parts of the adventure.I put the word out that I was interested infinding an MG. The hunt became an

event. Friends chimed in with their hor-ror stories of, “My MG was al-ways……..”. You can use your imagina-tion about what came after the word “al-ways”, but the story inevitably ended with,“I loved that car!” They all helped in thehunt. They would go on-line to all the carplaces they knew and they looked in thelot of every car dealership they passed. They looked on the side of the road andmade notes of any antique car they would

see along with directions and phone num-bers and so on and so on.

You probably have all been in on the hunt, but being new to this British car world, Ifound it fun, fascinating, and frustrating(and that will be all the “f” words I willuse to describe my hunt). Yet, having somuch enthusiasm from friends and fam-ily to find my British Car made the huntan event I will always remember withfondness.

In my life I have found that sometimesthe best plan is no plan. After endlesshours of researching and searching on-line; after countless rides to go see theone Chuck saw on the side of the road,or following leads from Judy who knowspeople, I was not having much luck. Thecar, or should I say “my car”, was not outthere; at least not yet. Then, in earlyspring, a neighbor stopped by and askedme if I was still looking for an MG. I said,“Yes!” She told me of one that she passedon her way to work and that it looked likeit was in pretty good shape, so she saidthat she would write the details down for

There are many - myself included - whothink we are just coming into the mostbeautiful part of the year in New England.Cool days and crisp nights and LOTS ofcolor everywhere. For those of us thatare cuddlers, the crisp nights are a greatexcuse - but I digress.

The downside is, of course, that the joysof open car touring are somewhat dimin-ished when frostbite threatens the cheek-bones. It is hard to fully enjoy the fallfoliage when it forces us to start thinkingof the annual ritual of hibernation for ourcars.

But as we wind down the season, let usreflect for a moment on just what a won-derful year this has been.

Perhaps the most obvious was the suc-cess of our 2nd Show of Dreams atWolfeboro, and first ever (for us) 2-Dayevent. The success of the Show allowedus to donate twice as much to High Hopesthis year as we did last year but, perhapsjust as important, the location ofWolfeboro near the center of the Stateattracted people from New Hampshirethat never got a chance to visit with uswhen the Show was held in the southerntier. We may have had more cars whenthe Show was held closer to Massachu-setts, but many of them were Massachu-setts cars and we are, after all the BritishCars of New Hampshire club. To me, thatis significant. Sure I like to see a wide

variety of cars, but it’s really the peoplethat make me keep coming back and, according to the latest update, we nowhave 162 Memberships with many ofthose being couples. I certainly don’tknow each and every one of those mem-bers (yet) but the ones that I have gottento know in my few years with the Clubhave become my friends.

With those new friends I have:

· Been served “Tea” at the ShakerVillage in Canterbury

· Eaten pancakes at Polly’s PancakeParlor in Sugar Hill during the LupinFestival

· Had tea at the Birchwood Inn inTemple served by the genuinely Brit-ish proprietors.

· Eaten Wiener Schnitzel at both theWilliam Tell Inn in Alton and theLakeview Inn in Wolfeboro

· Toasted the Queen at our AnnualBirthday Party in her honor

· Toasted (as in burned) myself atthe bonfire at Jon Bergeron’s beforethe Show

· Helped solve the murder of theGreat Radinski at our annual Mys-tery Tour

To me, these are the activities that makeBCNH the Club that I want to belong to.

I was pleased to see the very large turn-out at the regular club meeting in Sep-tember. We can read about UpcomingEvents in the newsletter, but it is at themeetings that we really get psyched up

to participate. And it is in participation thatI find the greatest joy. As the old sawgoes, the more you put into it the moreyou get out.

Please join us for as many meetings andevents as you can so we can get to knowyou better. We understand that no onecan make it to all of them. That’s whywe schedule so many. Join us when youcan. That’s why you joined.

So Saith Director Bob

The October meeting was held at theWeathervane on Oct 5th . There weretwenty-six in attendance. Wade calledthe meeting to order at 7:22 PM. TheSeptember meeting minutes were ac-cepted as printed in the newsletter prov-ing once again that no one reads them (oris it that by the time the meeting rollsround no one remembers them?)

Also accepted as printed in the newslet-ter was the treasurer’s report.

As usual John Giese needs articles forthe newsletter.

We had two guests at the meeting: DaveDickinson from Gilford has a 1979 Spit-fire and simply wanted to see whatBCNH was all about. Also in attendancewas Bob Patukonis from the High HopesFoundation. More about him later.

Wade had each of the attendees describetheir first British car. Gerry Cleary winsthe prize; she still has her 1959 MGA!

Past Events

Stowe was several weekends previousand we were given an update on atten-dance at Stowe. Quite a few club mem-bers attended.

Future Events

By the time you get this the fall Hallow-een Tour by Brit Bits will be over but wedid mention it at the meeting with a fewpeople indicating they would participate.

The fall mystery tour is scheduled for Oct18th. We plan to meet at the Airport Dinerin Manchester and take off from there. If it rains the tour is canceled – with norain date this year. We plan to meet forbreakfast at 7:30 AM and take off fromthere. We will end up at George andLinda Coburn’s for a Bar-B-Que as wedid last year. The price is $5 per personfor the food. Bring your own chair anddrinks. George still needs four chief in-spectors.

Next on the agenda was the holiday party.Bob Mitchell has looked into a dinner at

the Shaker Table Restaurant at ShakerVillage and for those who want to par-ticipate a candlelight stroll through the vil-lage. The price will be about $25-30 perperson. Also required is an unwrappedgift for Toys for Tots and if you want toparticipate a Yankee Swap gift. The dateis December 5th. More information on thislater.

The big event for the evening was thepresentation of the Show of Dreamscheck to the High Hopes Foundation.Bob Patukonis was visibly surprised whenshow Chairman Mike Sweet presentedBob with a check for $8000. Well done!Thank you everyone for your support ofthe Show of Dreams. In a year whendonations have been hard we were ableto double the amount we gave them lastyear. Thanks to everyone for all the hardwork. It is truly appreciated by the foun-dation. By the way, this is the 13th yearwe have supported the High Hopes Foun-dation and this is the most we’ve evergiven.

Also at the meeting the club has agreedto buy two bricks for The Nick. One foreach year of our show, the price is $125per brick.

The 50-50 was $40 and it was won byFred Goodrich.

me if I was still interested. I said I was,and so she did.

Judy and I took the directions and wentfor a ride to see it in her MG. The huntstarted last fall after one trip with her carclub and here it was Spring and I still hadnot found a car, “the car”, so I was notexpecting too much. At worst it was anice spring day and a good day for a ridein an MG with the top down. We had notrouble finding the car. Before getting out, both Judy and I looked at each other andwent, “hmm”.

The plate read, “79-MGB”. It had a newblack cloth top and the paint was not bad.We took a peek inside and saw that it hadnew mats and that the interior was in de-cent shape. Now I know all the guys aregoing to say, “Sure, the girl thing! Look-ing at a car and all they check are thecosmetics.” Well, there was a method tomy madness, so just hold on to those girlcomments. If it passed the initial eyeballtest, I would come back with my husbandto do the important check: the road wor-thiness check. If I were to get a car thisspring I wanted to be able to drive andenjoy it this season and worry about bring-ing it back to glory in the winter.

Well, my husband came out and took herfor a drive. Keep in mind that during theentire drive down to see her he was com-plaining that he would not fit in this carand he did not understand why I wanteda British Car. They spend all their time inthe shop. After an enjoyable drive (dur-ing which he discovered he does fit intoan MG) he came back and we looked overall the documentation. There was plentyof work already done on this car and, al-though it would need a few things, itseemed my car had found me.

Well all the gory details about price arebetter left up to that old saying, “It is onlyworth what someone is willing to pay forit.” With all the paperwork signed, I askedthe last question I had about my new oldMG, “What is her name?” The previousowner explained that two weeks after she

got the car (it was one of her dream cars)she found out she was pregnant. So shedid not get to drive her much. The firstcouple of years she just spent money onfixing her up and then she got pregnantagain, hence the reason I was able topurchase my MG in the first place. Herdream car and two small children just didnot add up, so she had to give her up. Ifelt sad for her in a way, but then thought,“Wait, her dream just changed. It wentfrom being an MG owner to being amother. Not a bad deal after all.” But inthe process, she never did name the carso I asked her, “What was your firstchild’s name?” She told me, “Molly”.

“That’s perfect!”, I said. “Then the car’sname is Molly, so your former dream carhas your daughters name and I will trea-sure her for us both.” That actuallybrought a tear to her eye and she saidshe was glad that I would have her carand that she knew I would take good careof her. Funny how that works, isn’t it?How attached we get to our cars.

I have had Molly for a season and wehave had a blast. She has done severalrides with friends from BCNH and hasenjoyed each of them. So, when it cametime for their “Show of Dreams”, we wentand we joined. We look forward to beinga member and sharing in the pure enjoy-ment of good people, good driving, andgood fun.

2010 Show Of DreamsUpdate

Although the 2010 Show Of Dreams stillseems so far away, much is going on withthe committee to ensure that it surpassesthe success of the 2009 show.

Sponsors and vendors are being con-tacted, but more importantly, we needyour help.

I’d like to encourage as many of you aspossible to be part of the show, whetherit’s set up / take down, raffles, parking, goodwill ambassadors, etc... More handsmake less work for all, and believe me,there’s a lot of it on show days. Considerjoining the SOD committee (join up any-time) and be part of the action. Everyonehas ideas and the show can only get bet-ter with more input. The feedback we’vereceived so far has been fantastic!

The next SOD meeting is after the Mys-tery Tour October 18, an update on thatmeeting will follow in the newsletter.

It’s getting cold out there, and there areplenty of nooks and crannies in your carfor mice to call home over the winter.Make sure your heater box isn’t one ofthem!

Cheers,

Mike

PORSCHE OFNASHUA

OCTOBERFESTAUTO SHOW

by Diana Stanley

On Sunday, October 4th, Porsche ofNashua presented their 2nd AnnualOctoberfest Auto Show to benefit EasterSeals.

The morning began with cloudy skies, fogand a fall chill in the air. The weatherreports mentioned a 30% chance of show-ers in the am with skiesclearing by noon.

So Bob & I set outfrom our corner of theworld (top up, ofcourse) to Nashua toshow our support forthis worthwhile charityand the show organiz-ers. (More on the showorganizers later)

When we arrived, there were two cars inthe parking lot: aPorsche Carrera and a’56 Chevy in the pro-cess of being restored. The show orga-nizers were still “setting-up” but wereprepared with our registration packageand our “goodie bag”.

A few minutes later, Norma & Rod ar-rived in the ’69 Jag. Oddly enough, theircar registration number was “13”. What’sup with that? Isn’t that number reserved

for Paul & Doris? When Paul ar-rived with hisStag, he was re-lieved to see thathis sister was the13th car in theshow. Does Paulh a v etriskaidekaphobia?Well, no matterwhat car numberwe were issuedour little BCNH group was complete withone Jag and two Triumphs.

During the next hour or so, cars arrivedat a steady pace to the final number of

twenty-three. The makes and models in-cluded fifteen Porsches from some prettybasic models (if that’s possible for aPorsche ) to a model set up strictly forracing. The other entries included a ’56Chevy, a ’57 Ford Fairlane 500 with a 65T-Bird interior, a ’95 355GTS Ferrari inthe midst of the restoration process, a ’69

Jag E Type, a ’73 Stag, a ’74 TR6, a ’69Saab Sonnet and a late arriving, latemodel Mustang.

The ballot was a “people’s choice” witha twist. Instead ofchoosing your favoritein each class, yourchoices were: whichcar would you choose tomake a “get away”,which car would youdrive across country and which car didn’tneed a stimulus pack-age? With six questionsof that nature, it madefor interesting discus-sions around each ve-hicle.

The show was spon-sored by a local office of Ameriprise Fi-nancial and 92.5 “The River” radio sta-tion. There was a silent auction with someupscale Porsche regalia and items do-nated by various local sponsors and araffle. A local meat market provided theburgers, dogs and sausage.

The time passed quickly as we mingled

with the other car owners discussing theneed for parts and what area of the carwould be the focus of the next restora-tion project. One of the highlights wasthe carry-on luggage testing hatch (akathe trunk) on the ’69 Saab Sonnet. Talkabout packing light! Norma & Rod’sunique, 1”x3”x2’ pine, boot support wasquite the topic of conversation as well. Does anyone know of a company that canfix that for them? (Sorry, guys I couldn’tresist)

As usual, there were many stories; someto laugh about and others just made yousay, “Wow!” All unique.

As the sky cleared around noon, we all

took some time to hand out “Save theDate” cards for the 2010 Show ofDreams to the other attendees. In theprocess we acquired information on thevarious clubs and websites where we canpost the information about the show andsend out invitations to the members.

We all had the pleasure of meeting LoriConnolly. Lori is the Marketing Directorat Mini of Peabody, BMW of Peabodyand organizer of the Octoberfest AutoShow at Porsche of Nashua. Mini ofPeabody was a “Show sponsor” for the2009 Show of Dreams. It was great tofinally meet Lori after so many e-mailsand phone calls between Norma, Lori andmyself.

We were, also, introduced to Ray Sousa, sales manager of Porsche of Nashua. Wementioned the “Celebration of the Euro-pean Motorcar” aspect of the Show ofDreams. Ray is very interested in get-ting involved with our show along withthe PoN Auto Show sponsors. We cer-tainly look forward to discussing the pos-sibilities for 2010.

The show ended at 3pm under very sunnyskies and much warmer temperatures.

In case you’re wondering, the BCNHcontingent did not take home any trophies.

We all came away from the show betterfor having supported a good cause.
