Car of the Month

A Rearended CrashCourse to a Frogeye

By Chuck Connors

As a teenager I had two friends that hadBritish Cars, one had a Hillman the otheran Austin Healey Bugeye Sprite. It wasthen that I got the bug (pun intended). Ihowever never found my way to acquirea British vehicle, although I did comeclose in the late sixties with a JaguarXKE and a Lotus Elan. In the spring of2001, I saw a 1965 Austin Healey Spriteat a service station in Londonderry, NH.

The 1965 right hand drive Sprite and wasin very poor condition. However it wascheap so I bought it and began the longcostly spiral down the rabbit hole of rustand big Moss Motors invoices. In 2001we went to the British Invasion and theprevious owner recognized the car as his,

because he had been rear-ended and hehad replaced the back of the car with

the back from a MG Midget. (Strikeone). In August of 2002, I was working onmy 1965 in my garage under (split levelhouse) and had the Sprite up on jackstands it was very hot, so I took a breakand went upstairs to cool off. After a fewminutes heard a loud crash and the houseshook like a bomb had gone off. Ourneighbor, who is a mason, lives on a steephill across the street. He came home inhis small dump truck, parked the truck, got out to greet his son in law, daughterand granddaughter. The truckstransmission had not fully locked intopark. He left his door open as he got outof the truck. The truck started to rolldown the hill/driveway just missingwedging his granddaughter against hisson in law, new SUV. The door of thetruck was flattened against the truck andcontinued scraping all the way down theside of the SUV. Then it continued toroll across the street, mowed down mymail box, and shrubs, and continueddown my driveway and the entire dumpsection into my garage. It hit my 1965Austin Healey knocking it off the jackstands crushing the rear end and pushingit into my work bench. I was under theSprite just minutes before, I would havebeen crushed had I still been there.(Strike Two)In October 2005, I was rear endedwhen making a left hand turn. The fullsize Chevy driver never even hit hisbrakes. My 65 was a right hand drive

and when he hit me on the right rear ofthe car he broke the fuel fill pipe spillinggas all over the ground he pushed me

into the other lane but luckily no cars werecoming. His front left tire rode over the

rear of my car and just missed my head.My wife and I were not injured but thecar was totaled. I attribute our lack ofinjuries to the fine job Clark Taylor ofHistoric Motor Sports did when he

welded in new floors in the car. (StrikeThree)In the fall of 2006 with the insurancemoney and the money I got for sellingthe 1965 (I bought it back from theinsurance company) I was able topurchase a 1958 Austin Healey Bugeye

Once again, as Prime Minister of yourClub I am overwhelmed by what a vi-brant group we have become.

Here we are, in the “off season” whenour cars are all still tucked away waitingfor Spring. Our calendars tell us it is al-ready here, but that not what we see andfeel. And yet, 92 Members attended our24th Club Birthday Party ; 54 Membersattended the Regular March Meeting(now held at Moe Joe’s on the east sideof Manchester) and 24 members attendedour first ever Regional Sub-Group meet-ing – that of “the Lakes Regional Coun-cil” held on March 19 at the Common ManRestaurant in Plymouth.

If we get this kind of turnout in the “offseason” we certainly have reason to ex-pect a great new year for BCNH Mem-bers in 2015.

Note that I DID NOT say it would be agreat year for THE CLUB – I said itwould be a great year for THE MEM-BERS.

I have often said that the primary pur-pose of our Meetings is to meet. Thatis also the primary purpose for having aClub at all. We are a very social club andall of our activities are focused on givingMembers as many opportunities as pos-sible to spend time with others that shareour common interests.

As a demonstration of just how impor-

tant that “sharing” is, at the first Meetingof the Lakes Region Council, at least halfof the 24 members that attended werethose that already attend the Manchestermeeting regularly. They were in Plymouthfor two primary reasons. 1) because theywanted to meet and get to know theseMembers that we have not often seenin Manchester (because it’s too faraway for them) and 2) because theywanted to be sure that those Members(some of whom have actually been inBCNH for years) genuinely feel thatthey are part of “the Club” and notsome “splinter group.”

One of the 24 Members there was MikeSweet, the original founder of BCNH, andthe attendance at this Meeting was abouttwice as many people as the original groupthat Mike pulled together to start BCNH24 years ago. It doesn’t get much betterthan that!

But it Might!! If this works – and moremembers get to enjoy the comradery ofthe Club, then we may also try a Sea-coast Council and maybe even a Monad-nock Council – once Members in thoseareas see that this actually works.

I want to give a huge shout-out to Karland Kellie Braconier. If it weren’t forthem, the Lakes Regional Council wouldstill be “an idea” and not a real group. We are much more about “play” than“work” – but there still is some work –and somebody has to do that work. ABIG Thank You to Karl and Kellie.

But to carry this one step further, we haveoften observed that, the Members that

have the most fun are the membersthat do the most. I encourage you totake a look at the Club website atwww.bcnh.org. Click on Events justunder the banner and the Events Calen-dar should pop up. You will see that SueMacDuff – the Club’s “Calendar Girl”has been hard at work entering the ac-tivities that our Club Members (andother club’s club members) have alreadyplanned for this season.

When you get to any month’s “page” inthe calendar, you will see dates wherean entry is shown. Click on the entryitself and more detail will pop up. If it isa listing from another club (or the LarzAnderson or Owl’s Head) there may bea link on the event pop-up that will takeyou to more detail supplied by the orga-nization actually staging the event.

We all owe Sue a great deal of apprecia-tion for the time she has put into this!!You will see that there are A LOT ofevents on the calendar – more than anyof us can possibly attend. Our goal is tobe sure that there will be at least somethat you will be able to attend.

At each month’s regular meeting wewill talk up each of the next month’sevents. We do this so you can hearmore about those events from othermembers that have actually been tothem before. But if you can’t make ameeting, and you find an event of inter-est, feel free to call other members tosee if they are interested too.

Keep in mind that “the Club” doesn’t or-ganize these events. It is Club Mem-

The March monthly meeting was held atour new for now “clubhouse” Moe Joe’sin Manchester off the Massabesic trafficcircle. Prime Minister Bob called it toorder at 7:00PM.

We had 4 new members in attendance.

,Dominic and Diana Metreaud made thetrip from Eliot, ME and have a TR250and an MGA.

Also in attendance were members Kellieand Karl Braconier who we normally onlysee at the car show. They are headingup the northern / lakes region council –thank you! Also from Derry was ScottRevis who has a 1980 MGB. We werejoined by Lisa Sasser and Betsy Hahnwho joined us on the covered bridge tourin the Keene area.

There were also several other memberswho had not attended a meeting in awhile. Pearl Colby now has no excusenot to go since she lives nearby, John Boweattended and Wayne and Cindy MacLeayalso showed up.

we reached a new record number of at-tendees – 54. It must be the food or ev-eryone has cabin fever.

The treasurer and secretary reports wereaccepted as printed in the newsletter.

First topic of discussion was the newLakes Region Council which will be meet-

ing monthly at the Common Man in Ply-mouth. Easy to find and easy to get to. Check the calendar for the date and timeif you wish to attend. We really hope thatour northern tier of members will find thetime to make it to the meeting.

Last month our only event was the clubbirthday party at the Tuscan Kitchen(sometimes referred to as the TuscanChicken).

Check the calendar for the future eventsthat are coming up. I know we’re allwaiting for the snow to melt and for mudseason to come and go. The calendar waslaid out at the January planning meetingby those who braved the cold and snowto make the trek to the wilds ofChichester. We discussed the JANEMagical Mystery Tour. This is a Jaguarof New England event that is held everyother year. It is a gimmick rally. It’s amystery because – you only know thestarting point – not where you will endup. It is an overnight event. You showup do the tour and then end up at a hotelfor the night. They have a dinner/ awardsbanquet and breakfast in the morning andthen you are on your own to find yourway back home. If you’ve never doneone of these events this is a good one totry. Most of these are single car teams;in this case you can work with other carsand do the rally as a team. It is less in-timidating for novices.

You can sign up at J-A-N-E.org. If youwant additional information call BobMitchell, me or Bob and Diana Stanley.

There are a couple of tech sessions thatwe are invited to in April and May. Checkthe calendar if a tech session is in yourfuture.

The British By the Sea Show is Memo-rial Day Weekend. There is a group plan-ning to go down on Friday, tour aroundon Saturday and attend the show on Sun-day and come home. There are alsomembers who plan to stay until Mondayand then return. We have a block ofrooms at the Hilton Garden Inn in Grotonbut they are going fast so make your res-ervations soon.

For Sale: 1972 MGB runs but needswork-floor boards.John Monahan 603-253-7614

Sadly selling my 1977 MGB because Ihave too many! I have driven this car forthree seasons and it was just inspectedagain this week.It has a great look and a very nice interior. It runs and drives well. It has always beengaraged and the top is new. It has a fewblemishes that are cosmetic, which areminor and overall, not obvious; a trunkcrease and minor rust on one rocker. Thiscar is really fun to drive, as MGs are, andis quite attractive, turning headseverywhere! priced to sell at $5,[email protected] , (603) 472-8005

part of the state to meet and socialize. This group being an extension of the clubwith the intent of making monthly meetingsaccessible. Karl asked for a show ofhands for people who plan to make thenext meeting which will be Thursday, April16th. Also ideas for some future eventshad been tossed around with many of themembers offering encouragement andsupport for developing road trips north andparticipating in the drives.A rowdy version of “Happy Birthday”was sung in honor of Bill Greenan’sBirthday.

Neil Flaherty made a great suggestion forpeople taking turns, maybe two or threeper meeting, to share past British carexperiences.Meeting was adjourned about 9 PM withmultiple discussions around the roomgoing on until almost 10.Respectfully submitted,Kellie & Karl Braconier

SHOW OF DREAMS MEETINGNOTESMARCH 7, 2015

Thank you to Bob Mitchell and ClarkTaylor for hosting the March 2015 SODmeeting at Historic Motorsports inCandia. It was a great opportunity tomeander through all the great cars invarying stages of restoration andhibernation.Twenty one committee membersattended. Chuck & Diane Connors (newadditions to the newsletter productionstaff) attended the meeting for the firsttime. Welcome Chuck & Diane.

All of the artwork for the posters/flyers,tee shirts & dash plaques for the showhas been completed by Kat Paquette (Paul& Doris Karle’s daughter) Thank you,Kat. Doris will send the images to JimMunro so the committee may acquire thefinal costs for the regalia items to beordered for the show.

The Police Detail to control traffic at theshow has been reserved with the HudsonPolice Department. The cost is $375.00for 5 hours ; one police officer and cruiser.

The agreement has been signed withDave’s Septic for the Restroom Trailerand Handicapped port-a-potty unit. Thedeposit of $200.00 has been paid with abalance due of $1,726.00. Norma Karlewill order a banner or banners to directpeople to the restrooms.

The Town of Merrimack PoliceDepartment will be attending the showthis year with the Seat Belt Convincerdisplay.

Pinch & Suzi Polenchar have started theBCNH wine. (Thank you, Pinch & Suzi)

Dave Corbett has made 44 wine glass

holders. (Thank you, Dave)Bob Mitchell has ordered the wine carrierfor the Best in Show trophy.Doris Karle will order the 2nd Place BreadBoards and 3rd Place cheese boards thisweek.

Last year, the question came up abouthandicapped parking on the field. Thecommittee has designated some spacesaround the front of the Alvirne Hills Houseto accommodate those in need ofhandicapped access. Bob Mitchell has aHandicapped Parking Only sign availableto use at the show.

The registered show vendors are asfollows: Good News Garage, Five StarBarbeque & Catering, Rae’s GourmetSpecialty Foods ( Lemonade, Kettlecorn),Bruster’s Ice Cream and Brit Bits.

Pinch Polenchar will speak with DaveAlukonis (Pres, Hudson HistoricalSociety) about possible tours of theAlvirne Hills House on the day of theshow. He will also ask the Society ifthey would be interested in having avendor tent on the field to give outinformation about the Alvirne Hills Houseand the Historical Society and to sell thesouvenir items which helps to support thecare of the house and grounds. The committee discussed the BCNHRaffle with regard to the large volumeand variety of items received at eachshow.

Suggestions: Please do not donate useditems to the raffle table. If the item isused and car related, please speak withWill Bernstein to determine if the item isappropriate for the club parts table.

Since there is always a large number ofGeneral Raffle Table items, raffle ticketnumbers for those items will not beannounced individually as they have in thepast. Those numbers will be pulled andwritten on the board for ticket holders tocheck as they walk through the show field. This will decrease the time it takes JimGeorge to announce each number andwait for the winner to pick up their prize. This new method will be announced

several times before and during the raffleevent. Jim will announce the numbers forthe high value items only. (that wouldbe the items which have theindividual ticket containers on theraffle table). It is the hope that thesechanges will allow more time for musicentertainment, High Hopes and the FoodBank representatives time to speak aboutthe services they provide andannouncements about the variousattractions on the field.

Other discussions: The 2016 20th Showof Dreams: Prepare save the date cardsfor the 2015 British Invasion, Changethe type of trophies for 2016, Find asupplier for BCNH Car Badges as aspecial item for the 20th SOD.The date for the April SOD meeting hasnot been decided. Bob Mitchell willcontact Moe Joe’s to inquire aboutscheduling the April meeting there. Moreinformation to follow via email.
