Car of the Month

MY MG STORYby Rudy Krueger

Growing up as a kid in Milwaukee, Wis-consin, I never saw a British car in town.

It was 1957 while hitchhiking in the ser-vice (US Navy) that I got my first ride ina MG, TF.

I liked the looks of the car and thoughtthat some day I would own one. Was1966 when I bought my first Britishsports car, a “bug eye” 1959 AustinHealey Sprite. In 1969 I bought a 2nd

1959 Sprite, which I still own and drive. In 1971 I bought a 1965 MG Midgetand drove that as my daily commutervehicle for some six years. I loved thatlittle car but it was rusting away, so in1977 my wife Barbara bought me abrand new 1977 MGB. A real sports carand a dream car to drive. Drove it as mydaily vehicle for some 165K miles, nowretired.

In March of 1980 I finally bought a 1950MGTD that was in terrible shape; but itwas all there.

It was late summer of 1980, while pass-ing through North Conway, New Hamp-shire, that we saw a bunch of old MGsdriving around. Barbara and I followedthem to a MG event where we met somereally friendly people. We were ap-proached by the MG T Party to join andso we did. In 1981 we also joined theNEMGT Register.

Our TD was still waiting for attention. Ididn’t start the restoration until later thatyear and it wasn’t completed until thespring of 1988. I took the car apart andcompletely rebuilt everything mostly bymyself. The following is the history of thecar.

If I’m not mistaken, you will see a num-ber of pictures of our 24th Club Birth-day Party on other pages in this issue. If that party can be considered to be thekick-off of the new BCNH year, thenwe are certainly off to a great new year.Ninety one members were at the partyand from what I could see, they all had apretty good time!!!

And, we had the additional bonus of a“private viewing” of the Restored SalemTrain Station that’s right next to theTuscan Kitchen complex. That restora-tion was a personal project of BCNHmember Dianne Paquette – with a littlehelp from several friends. Kudos toDianne for her efforts.

One of the topics of conversation duringthe party was the closing of the BedfordWeathervane that has been our meetingplace for many years. We have talkedfor several years about a possible changein location – now we have no choice butto act.

We have started the search, but in someways there are almost too many possi-bilities. The trick is to find a venue that1) can put us in a separate room – 2)without charging a room fee; 3) will al-low us to “order off the menu” instead

of being limited to an often more expen-sive Events Menu. 4) accepts the factthat our meeting is NOT actually a “Din-ner Meeting” and that some memberschoose not to order anything at all; and5) oh yes, a liquor license would be agood thing too. Look for an e-blast an-nouncing the venue for the March 2nd

meeting soon.

On the subject of our meeting NOT ac-tually being a Dinner Meeting, let metake this opportunity again to remindthose members who do not attend regu-larly that our meetings are not really“Business Meetings” either. The pri-mary purpose of our meetings is tomeet. We are a very social club andour meetings are just one of the manyopportunities we use to spend time withothers who share our common interests.

We are also working on a possible sitefor a Lakes Region sub-group to meet.Thirteen members from the Lakes Re-gion have indicated an interest in a Re-gional Meeting there. That’s twice asmany people as the original group thatstarted BCNH, so we hope we will beable to make that work. We may alsotry a Seacoast Region group, but onlytwo members from the Monadnock arearesponded so we may wait on that groupuntil more enthusiasm develops there.

I also encourage you to take a look atthe Club website at www.bcnh.org.Click on Events just under the banner

and the Events Calendar should pop up.You will see that Sue MacDuff – theClub’s “Calendar Girl” has been hardat work entering the activities that ourClub Members (and other club’s clubmembers) have already planned for thisseason.

When you get to any month’s “page” inthe calendar, you will see dates wherean entry is shown. Click on the entryitself and more detail will pop up. If it isa listing from another club (or the LarzAnderson or Owl’s Head) there may bea link on the event pop-up that will takeyou to more detail supplied by the orga-nization actually staging the event.

We all owe Sue a great deal of appre-ciation for the time she has put into this!!You will see that there are A LOT ofevents on the calendar – more than anyof us can possibly attend. Our goal is tobe sure that there will be at least somethat you will be able to attend.

At each month’s regular meeting we willtalk up each of the next month’s events,

Due to the snow on Saturday, January24th, the SOD meeting was postponedto Sunday the 25th. Twenty two com-mittee members attended the dual pur-pose meeting which combined a plan-ning session with our “Calendar Prin-cess”, Sue MacDuff, and the Show ofDreams meeting.

Details of the club’s calendar will beavailable on the website shortly and alsoin the club newsletter.

The SOD meeting started off with dis-cussion of the poster, flier, dash plaqueand tee shirt artwork which is being cre-ated by Kat Paquette (Doris & PaulKarle’s daughter). Kat has been the “goto” person for the club artwork for sev-eral years now. She has created so manywonderful images which representBCNH and the Show of Dreams so welleach year. “Thank you Kat” for all youdo!!!!!!!!!

So far, Kat has completed the work on

the poster/flier and the dash plaque. TheShow tee shirt image is in progress.

With artwork in mind, we also discussed“Car Badges” with Jim Sambold, long-time member of BCNH, and the Presi-dent of JANE. Jaguar Association ofNew England is purchasing Car Badgesfor their club. It has been about 15 yearssince BCNH has presented a car badgeto the club members, so, this might be agood time to bring them back. If theprice is agreeable, the club will haveBCNH car badges made with the imageof the new logo which will be part of the

club regalia inventory and available forpurchase at the club meetings and theSOD.

For the past few months the committeehas been discussing a new supplier forthe BCNH and SOD regalia. (Our con-tact with the previous supplier no longerworks for that company.) Bob Mitchellhas been discussing this matter with clubmember, Jim Munro. Jim owns MunroGraphics and is the supplier of the club’swine glass and 1st place self-stickplaques for the SOD. Bob M. willpresent the artwork for the various re-galia items needed for the show and clubto get pricing from Jim.

Dave’s Septic (supplier of the restroomtrailer) has been contacted to verify the2015 price for July. The price for thetrailer is the same as last year,$1,728.00,and the cost for a handicapped acces-sible port-a-potty is $220.00. The com-mittee will contact Dave’s Septic to re-serve the units.

Pinch & Suzi Polenchar, will begin thewine making process for the 2015 SOD1st Place trophies. The wine variety is“Malbec”. “Thank You, Pinch & Suzi”.

Dave Corbett will be making the cherry

wood wine glass holders for the show.“Thank You” Dave.

On that same note, the club has 72 wineglasses in stock to be used as the 1st

place trophies.

The committee needs to order one WineCarrier to be used as the “Best in Show”trophy. The show inventory shows threewicker wine carriers available for the“Best of Featured Marque” trophy.

Doris Karle will order 20 bread boardsfor 2nd place and 15 cheese boards for3rd place.

Doris will also ask the bread board pro-vider if he wants to be a vendor at theshow. Considering the quality of thebread and cheese boards, we would liketo see the rest of the products he cre-ates.

We have 171 plastic goodie bags avail-able this year along with 100+ 4 oz.spray bottles of Dash-Away InteriorDetailer received from Surf City Garage.

The suggested list of raffle items waspresented by Wayne & Maggie Bolen.

Wayne will be submitting an article to thenewsletter to explain the ideas behind thesuggested list. In short, we are lookingfor fewer items on the General Raffletable and more higher dollar value items. The higher dollar value items sell moreraffle tickets which allows the club toearn more for the charities we serve. Also, fewer general raffle items reducesthe time DJ Jim George will spend an-nouncing raffle ticket numbers and allowhim more time to play music and enter-tain the field. Club members can eitherdonate the item or contribute to a fundso the committee can purchase the highervalue items.

Advertising has been an important butexpensive part of the Show of Dreamsfor a long time. For several years, online advertising, posters, fliers, contactwith other clubs and free press releasesin various publications have been the

by Sue MacDuff

Before the Show of Dreams Meeting inJanuary we had a meeting to plan nextyears events. I brought a list of ideas andJerry Griffin brought a booklet that hegot from the state with many interestingdrives and activities. As it turned out, somany ideas were presented by the groupthat they were not needed! As of now,all our BCNH dates are filled with theexception of two. On July 11, there is ashow at Castle in The Clouds. A volun-teer is needed to do the drive there. Thedrive could start in the Concord area andhave a stop or two along the way, per-haps the Wright Museum in Wolfeboro.Members could attend the show asspectators, tour the “castle” and have abite to eat there. We have a SaturdayDrive in October that has not been filled. The date is October 10 which is Co-lumbus Day Weekend but that date canbe changed to a more convenient one. Itis looking to be a full fun filled season! We will again be doing the Cruise Ins atthe British Beer Company in Manches-ter. Many drives are planned as well asa few overnight adventures. We have ouryearly Queens Birthday as well as ourShow of Dreams and Spring Tech Ses-sion. I hope a lot of you will come andenjoy the effort put forth by others. Weare so lucky to be a part of such a spe-cial group of LBC enthusiasts! Be sureto check our on line calendar for updatesand additions.

most affordable way for the club to ad-vertise the show. Jim Sambold and DaveLeBlanc will be working to find new pub-lications in which to advertise the show.Paul Karle will make contact with WhipsWheels as well.

More signs are needed for various areasof the show field. In particular, direc-tions for the spectator entrance to thefield, guiding the show cars to pre-regis-tration verses day-of-show registrationand guidance to the restrooms. NormaKarle will order a “Restroom” banner forthe trailer and we will contact Wade tomake additional signs for pre-registra-tion and day-of-show registration for theroadway. We will also speak with theTown of Hudson to see if they have anysigns available to alert traffic along theroadway.

The committee will order more pennantflags to create an entrance way onto thefield for the spectators.

We will contact the Town of Hudson toarrange a police detail for traffic control.

Jerry Griffin will contact the State LiquorCommission to reserve the DUI Com-mand Center and Town of Merrimackto reserve the Seat Belt Convincer forthe show.

Doris Karle is researching a dumpsterfor the field. More details within the nextfew months.

Norma Karle will have the 2015 Regis-tration Form ready in the next couple ofweeks.

The February SOD meeting has not beenscheduled. Please contact Diana Stanleyor Bob Stanley if you are interested inhosting the next meeting.

Happy 24th

Birthday BCNHA Gala 24th for

BCNH

by Bob Mitchell

photos by Dianne Paquette

We have often observed that: 1) BCNHis a Social Club and 2) that cars don’tjoin car clubs – people do.

The proof of those observations is nevermore apparent than at our annual ClubBirthday Party held in February of eachyear. We have a larger turn-out for the

Annual Birthday Party than for any otherevent except the Show of Dreams and– surprise, surprise - the party is in themiddle of winter when our cars are alltucked away waiting for Spring. Not thatwe don’t talk about cars you understand, but it’s clear that it is our fellow car own-ers who we really want to see.

And we certainly did. 91 Membersmade the trek down to the TuscanKitchen restaurant in Salem, and it wasworth the drive.

The Tuscan Kitchen opened just fouryears ago and they have certainly earnedthe good reputation they have developed.

The room was just the right size for ourgroup, the food was great and the ser-vice certainly lived up to expectations.

But, that’s not the reason we had a blast. As important as a good venue is, it isobviously not the key factor. We had agreat time last year at Fratello’s inManchester; an equally good time at theMile-Away in Milford the year beforeand at the Bonta in Hampton the yearbefore that. The message is clear here,it’s not “them” that makes us have a goodtime; it’ s us!!!!

The other thing that I thinksets us apart is the factthat, although there werenew members there whowe have not seen before– and other members whowe may only see this onetime each year – I did notsee any “wall-flowers.”We are an inclusivegroup, not an exclusive

one. I saw conversation groups form-ing and reforming as Members renewedold acquaintances and made new ones.

You can see in the picturessome of those who at-tended – and you can seeon their faces that theywere glad they did.

Oh, and let me not forgetto mention that we arealso a generous group. You opened your hearts –and opened your wallets– to help those who gettheir birthday dinner notfrom the Tuscan Kitchen, but from the NH FoodBank. You donated $320for those who need it themost.

As an added bonus, afterthe Party we had a “pri-vate viewing” of the Re-stored Salem Train Sta-tion that’s right next to theTuscan Kitchen complex. That restoration was apersonal project ofBCNH member DiannePaquette – with a littlehelp from several friends.Kudos to Dianne for herefforts.

Now, put your thinkingcaps on for a venue fornext year!!

TO ALL CLUB MEMBERS:

The Connecticut MG Club will present their annual British by the Sea car show on Sunday,

June 7, 2015 at Harkness Memorial Park in Waterford, CT. For the past few years, several

club members have traveled together to enjoy a day or two before the Sunday show to take

in the sites of the historic areas of Mystic, New London & Groton, CT. During the past two

years attending BBTS, a number of us have found a nice hotel which will accommodate the

needs of our group. That hotel is:

Hilton Garden Inn

224 Gold Star Highway

Groton, CT 06340

860-445-6800

www.mysticgroton.hgi.com

Since so many club members attend British by the Sea, we have contacted Hilton Garden

Inn’s Director of Sales, Nisha Parekh to propose a more affordable hotel rate for our

group of travelers.

Nisha has prepared the following for BCNH club members:

Room Rate for Friday June 5 & Saturday June 6, 2015 $139.00p/n plus tax

Rate for Sunday June 7, 2015 $119.00p/n plus tax

Group Code: BCN

Cut off date: May 6, 2015

Please contact the Hilton Garden Inn by the phone number listed above to reserve your

room. Please give the hotel representative the Group code of BCN to receive the room

rate for BCNH members. If the hotel representative does not recognize the Group

Code, ask to be transferred to Nisha.

Remember, you cannot book your room with Hotels.com, Travelocity or any other

reservation agency. These entities will not have the Group Code.

The people who own and operate this particular Hilton Garden Inn have been most

gracious to our entire group. We asked for a garden hose to wash our cars. It was

provided without hesitation. The hotel also has a really good restaurant with a creative

chef. The food was so good, we all decided to eat dinner at the hotel both nights of our

stay. What could be better; a way to wash our cars and a good place to eat, drink and

relax.

If you are planning to attend “British by the Sea”, please contact Hilton Garden Inn,

Groton, CT as soon as possible. Registration forms are available at:

www.ctmgclub.com.

The car made its first appearance at the1988 GOF in Andover, MA and took1st place in the TD class. It was an ex-citing day for us. Since 1982, we werevery active in the T Party and have hadlots of fun participating in the yearlyevents. We have gone to many GOF’sand met countless wonderful friendlypeople from all walks of life and mademany lasting friendships.

Our most memorable MG event was alap of the New England states driv-ing1500 miles while cruising around with

84 other MG cars and staying at so manyspecial places. The car has been toCanada many times, the north easternUS and now has gone over 25K milesand still looks fantastic and drives almostlike new.

I joined BCNH in July 2010 after com-pleting a restoration of my 1959 MGAwhich was written up in the October2010 issue of the BOOT, HOOD andBONNET.

It’s the cars that bring the great camara-derie of friends together.
