Car of the Month

by Jeff Abbe

When British cars were made they musthave had me in mind. They were cer-tainly made for the tinkerer. My love af-fair began at a very young age. My firstmemory of riding in a 1955 MG TD wasprobably around 1962. My Mom & Dadwould go away for an extra long week-end and have an elderly lady, namedLibby, come stay with us at our home.At the time there was just myself and twobrothers. Twins followed shortly after tomake a total of five children. No wondermy parents needed to get away. My re-membrance was that Libby would roll intothe driveway. I would be so excited tosee her and this fine red 1955 TD pullinto the garage. I can remember sittingat the steering wheel making lots of en-gine and screeching rubber sounds with-out ever leaving the garage. My mindwould race, thinking of all the placesshe could take us. She had hardlyunpacked her bags and we would tellLibby we needed something from thestore, or anything just to take a ride. Bythe weekend we had been to the top ofMount Uncanoonuc, gone to Pulpit Rockand toured all over southern New Hamp-shire and beyond. Libby was as thrilledto see my folks come home as we wereto see her arrive. I think we wore her outdriving every place we could imagine.

Fast forward ten years; I was a junior atWest High School and a member of thetennis team. My older brother had afriend who had just bought a 1969 MGB– GT and also played on the tennis team.I remember riding in the back, going to

Goffstown on Wallace Road much fasterthan the speed limit. What a ride! Oh boy!I knew then that if I ever grew up I wouldhave to have an MG. After finishing col-lege at UNH in 1975 my life long dreamof moving to Colorado also came true. Iwas a “ski bum” and lived the life of driv-ing Snow Cats at night and powderskiing by day. What could be finer, living at 8000 feet and working at Pur-gatory, in Durango. The “wild west” hadwon my heart. Eventually, I married andraised a daughter. My work was mainlyin the construction field, working lots ofovertime and skiing all winter.

Finally, at the age of forty-six (midlife cri-sis), I started looking for an MG on-line. Ialmost bought a red one from Virginia andthen realized there was no good way forme to get it back to Colorado. A car bufffriend at work learned about my searchand told me of a 1971 MGB GT sitting ina hangar at the Durango airport. I con-tacted the owner and met him out atthe airport. The car had four flattires and ran sort of “rough”. It hadbeen parked for six years or so. Havingsome Yankee ingenuity, I saw no reasonwhy this car should not be mine. I messedwith the carbs and put some fresh gas inmy new best friend. That’s all it took. Ibought this car one week before 9/11/2001. That was a memorable time foreveryone. A week after 9/11, a collegestudent living in our rental house causeda fire that destroyed that source of in-come. The world was crumbling allaround us. But “Ol’ Yeller” and I werebonding nicely; nothing could separate us.This car and I would go yard selling ev-ery Saturday. With this small car, I nevercould buy anything too big and that was

good. I became a member of the BritishCar Club of Albuquerque. Their club ismuch like ours. They have an annual carshow and many nice get-togethersthroughout the year. I participated in acar show in Gallup NM, about two hourssouth of Durango, this was the first longtrip away from home. Heading out acrossthe desert in Navajo country is not theplace to have any kind of break down. With fingers crossed, Ol’ Yeller ran like atop. I even won third place in my divisionbecause there were only three entrants. This situation seems to repeat itself again.

The following Summer my wife’s familywas having a family reunion , Forth ofJuly in Branson, Missouri. I had plentyof vacation time accrued, so I decided totry a long distance tour of Kansas, Okla-homa & Missouri. My wife and daugh-ter flew while I drove. Again everythingwent very well; no events worthy of men-tion. Round trip was a thousand miles, temperatures in the high nineties andall smiles. The temperature gaugenever came off the N in normal. Ifound the Ozarks Mountains very satis-fying to tour. Many winding roads andhills like you wouldn’t think about in theflat mid west. Upon arriving back homein Durango, I was made a believer thatBritish motoring in the USA can make fora very exciting vacation. That fall I at-tended a car show in Las Vegas, NewMexico. I brought a good friend with me.He later bought a 1973 MGB and then aparts car that has since been rebuilt andis better than his first car. Another be-liever was born.

In 2004 my Mom passed away here inNew Hampshire. I came HOME for herFuneral with my daughter. That is when I

We will not have a general meeting onthe first Monday of the month (Decem-ber 7), but rather, as tradition, we will behaving the December meeting during ourChristmas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa Party onthe night of December 5th.

The Flu Season disrupted some ofNovember’s general meeting. In particu-lar, nominations for Office. So, atDecember’s meeting we will have a con-densed version; all positions will be of-fered. Those positions that have morethan one member running for office willbe voted upon by written ballot. Thoseoffices not contested will be voted uponin bulk by voice vote.

The next Director will be asking mem-bers to take appointed positions. Currentappointed positions have first choice be-fore other members. If asked, please donot give a knee-jerk “no” answer. Thinkabout it first.

I still would like to see a special January/February issue of the newsletter. I havea few new

ideas. If you have any ideas, please letBob or me know about them.

December5th Holliday Party

The November BCNH meeting was heldat the Weathervane on Nov 2nd. Themeeting was called to order at 7:00PM. There were no new members in atten-dance. As a matter of fact, there wereonly eleven total members in attendance. The previous month secretary’s reportwas accepted as printed in the newslet-ter as was the treasurer’s report. Wereceived a Show of Dreams update withthe news that the next meeting of thecommittee had been scheduled.

By the way, there are plenty of jobs avail-able on the show of Dreams committee. Come to a meeting or call one of us tovolunteer. We also had an update on theholiday party. The date is Saturday, De-cember 5th from 2:00 - 4:30 PM at theShaker Table. There is aoptional candlelight stroll after the event. The price is $13 per person for the stroll. You can see a description of the event onthe www.shakers.org web site. Theprice for dinner is $25-35 per person de-pending upon the entree selected. Theclub will be picking up a portion of thedinner. We voted on it but the amount theclub would kick in was left open and de-pends upon the attendance and the cost. We will not be responsible for a roomfee. Please bring a Yankee swap gift anda Toys-for-Tots unwrapped toy.

reached at [email protected] or at603-772-1116.

It’s that time of year; your yearly $30 duesare expected in December.

Many members have requested a copyof the membership list. If anyone wouldlike one they can contact me or LouBelanger for the latest version.

We discussed what activities we shouldplan for next year. Among the events werea Lobster Bake run, more Sunday drives,a July 4th run to an old fashioned July 4thcelebration like they have in Harvard, MA,a long weekend trip to Bar Harbor oranother area, and group attendance atBritish Invasion. Since then I havelearned that the 20th British Invasion willbe next year. We would like to know howmany members would like to attend andsee if we can make reservations as a clubat one of the hotels.

There is a JANE event on Nov 14th atContemporary Chrysler in Milford NH. There is a 1948 Jaguar Masrk IV beingunveiled after a complete restoration.

We have also been informed by theWeathervane that they are now on win-ter hours. The restaurant now closes at8PM. This is a result of the bad economyand a lack of patrons.

SHOW OF DREAMSMEETING NOTES

OCTOBER 18, 2009

The committee members in attendancediscussed the following items:

1.SAFETY STATION:

As the numbers of spectators, partici-pants and volunteers increases with eachshow, the committee discussed the needfor setting up a “Safety Station” on thefield.

It was decided that we would speak toWade and, possibly, the Red Cross forassistance with project.

Considering that we have removed thefire extinguisher requirement from theregistration form, this would also be thearea where fire extinguishers would belocated on the field.

2.PRIVATE LABEL WATER ANDROOT BEER WILL BE AC-QUIRED FOR THE 2010 SHOW.

3. MONTHLY ARTICLES FORTHE BRITISH MARQUE:

We discussed the idea of sending a shortmonthly article to the British Marque tokeep the SOD on the minds of all the otherparticipating car clubs.

4. POSTERS:

Features for the 2010 poster were dis-cussed.

Featured Marque: MG

Saturday hours are being changed to 9am- 3pm to accommodate those who mightwant to leave early to freshen up for theCocktail Cruise.

Sunday hours will remain 10am to 3pm.

We decided to list information on the post-ers for the scavenger hunt and any selfguided rides.

The Celebration of the European Motor-car event name has been changed to:

“Cars of the Continent”

5. CAR CLASSES:

In light of the fact that MG is the fea-tured marquee for 2010, we decided tokeep the MG classes as they are withMidgets moving to a new “MGOther”class.

Also, Sprites will be placed in the “HealeyOther” class.

This will reduce the classes to seventeeninstead of twenty-one+.

We are adding a “Survivor” class whichwill include cars that are un-restored,daily drivers. This will be for folks notinterested in the “People’s Choice”classes on the field.

We are adding a “Master Class” for thosecars who have taken 1st place in theirclass for the last two years. This will giveothers in the PC classes a chance to havetheir cars recognized.

6. TROPHIES:

In order to reduce the cost of trophies(2009 $1432,00), we discussed the ideaof having more practical, useful prizes.

The suggestions were: Bread Boardswith the show name, date and 1st, 2nd or3rd printed or burned into them. BobMitchell is looking into this.

Tall Glass Beer Steins etched with theshow information. They would be etchedwith 1st, 2nd or 3rd . No class designa-

realized I needed to return to New Hamp-shire to be closer to my aging dad. Also Iwanted to bring my little British car (LBC)to these fun twisty roads to tour. Mymarriage ended and a new chapter in lifebegan. I towed my MG back to NHon a U-Haul trailer. I had the interiorloaded to the max with all my belong-ings. Again, this cross country trip wasflawless with Ol’ Yeller in tow. Upon myarrival I was never so happy to unloadand start driving these roads I grew upon.

My life also had a new beginning; my highschool sweetheart eventually became mynew bride. Judi & I honey-mooned inNova Scotia on a camping trip with theLBC. We took the Cat Jet Ferry (vomitcomet) from Portland to Yarmouth, NovaScotia. Upon arrival we decided to graba nice supper at a nearby restaurant. Af-ter quenching our thirst and having somefood in our bellies we went to the parkinglot. I turned the key and nothing happened;no dash lights, no power anywhere. Weunloaded all our gear in the parking lotand began elimination strategies. Onefellow came by and was very helpful giv-ing us advice and contacts that couldmaybe get us on our way. Eventually theproper wire was wiggled just right andVRRROOOOM we were on our way.Quickly loading all our stuff back in thecar, Judi wasn’t sure if we should pro-ceed. I said, “Hop in. We’re going.”

We met some of the nicest people alongthe way. We met the president of theNova Scotia British Car Club. Anotherguy gave us the name and location of alady who owns an Antique Store andkeeps her MG out back. She was on herthird husband but kept her LBC throughall of them. We had the best time, know-ing it might be a little dangerous bringingmy new wife on a MG camping excur-sion. One night was spent on the Bay ofFundy, known for the highest tide in theworld. It was incredible. The area lookedlike a moonscape at low tide and then tookon the force and magnitude of high tide.

The bird life was outstanding too; sandpipers by the thousands. Needless to saywe made another successful journey withno mishaps, just lots of great sea sideviews and winding roads. As we age,our adventures haven’t been so grand butwe still enjoy puttering around NH in ourMG built for two.

The BCNH club has been a nicesocial club for anyone wanting to getthe support and camaraderie that en-sues with all our gatherings. You will al-ways find a conversation, whether youwant one or not. I wish that I could bemore active with the club, but life’s crazi-ness and other commitments take prece-dence over our wishes. This year’sShow of Dreams at Wolfeboro found mewith two more awards. I won first placein my division, and also “diamond in therough”. Again I was the only entrant inmy division. Ol’ Yeller is very proud tobe a “driver” and looks pretty sharp fromtwenty feet away. But officer! There was a low flying

pellican and I dropped my cell phone andmy poor million dollar Bugatti Veyron.

3. The Strawbery Banke Croquet Clubhas been contacted for the 2010 show. You have all received the recent e-mailfrom Jim McLaughlin. The SBCC isready to the two days of the show withus.

4. We will contact Bob Hartson regard-ing the Penny Farthing Bikes.

7. We will be preparing a “VolunteerSchedule” for both days so no one has toremain at a job for the entire show.

We will need more volunteers tomake sure we have good coveragefor each task. We especially needmore help for “Parking” .

8. Diana will be speaking with DavidLawton from Weirs Times. He sug-gested (after the 2009 show) that wecould be receiving more support from theMeredith Village Savings Bank. Thecommittee would be interested in moreadvertising in the WT for more than twoweeks.

9. We will be setting up an “INFORMA-TION TABLE”.

Show of Dreams Notes continued

10. The Town of Wolfeboro does not wantthe “Special Event” and “Raffle” appli-cations until after the first of the newyear.

At this point, the town has a “certificateof insurance” from BCNH which is validuntil May 2010. They will accept theapplication with that certificate in placeuntil the renewal is acquired in May.

11. Mary DeVries and Derry from theWolfeboro Chamber of Commerce wouldlike us to e-mail them any info we haveon the show as we get plans in place.

They will update thechamber website as newinfo is sent. They arevery interested in the fam-ily aspect of the show. Parents visiting the areaare always looking for“free” activities for thechildren. Mary and Derrybelieve the show is a per-fect venue to attract thesefamilies.

12. Diana has spoken toRay Sousa, sales manager,Porsche of Nashua. Raywill contact all of the carclubs affiliated with PoNto notify the clubs of theSOD. He will forward allof the info to the parentcompany as well.

Ameriprise Financial hasbeen contacted. MikeClark is on board for a

$500.00 sponsorship and possible vendorspace(schedule permitting).

Bob Patukonis of the High Hopes Foundation wasvisibly surprised when show Chairman Mike Sweet

presented Bob with a check for $8000.

A Happy Coincidence

by John Giese

Last weekend my wife, Joan, and I hadto fly down to Florida for the wedding ofmy sister’s one and only son. We arrivedat Orlando airport on Friday afternoon, where my sister and her husband pickedus up and drove us to their home inMelbourne. Melbourne is a communitythat is laid out on a grid of squares thatare one mile on a side, or roughly six hun-dred and forty acres. The square for thecommunity that my sister and brother-in-law live in is next to one that is a townpark. The park has hiking and biking trailsas well as horse stables, recreational clubhouses, a camp ground and places forvarious events.

Saturday morning I decided to take mybrother-in-law’s bicycle and go exploring. When I was packing for the trip I threwin my bag a couple of tee shirts, shortsand a baseball cap, not looking to seewhich ones they were. As it so happened, the cap was my MG cap and the first teeshirt I grabbed was my BCNH tee shirt, not thinking much about them. The firstplace I went was to the park to see whatwas there. Riding around to the far sideof the park I spied a parking area andsaw a few LBCs. It turned out that theMG Car Club Florida was having theirannual car show in the park that very day. What a happy coincidence. After intro-ducing myself to a few of the people set-ting up the show (it was early), I rodeback to my sister’s house, grabbed mycamera and scooted back to the show. There I met the editor of the club news-letter, Norman Ridgely.

I also met Joe and Pheona Kaiser. Joe isretired and he and Pheona are the editorsof newsletters for four British and oneAACA car clubs that do not have theirown newsletter. Joe told me about anorganization of some twenty clubs whoshare newsletter stories. Any of the clubscan reprint stories from the other news-letters. Talk about a find! This was theanswer to my prayers. Joe also makes

clocks featuring the car club logos andpictures of LBCs that clubs use a awardsat car shows. This is something that ourShow-of-Dreams committee membersmight be interested in looking into as areplacement for the award trophies.

As the morning went on more and morecars showed up. Pictured here are someof the cars that really caught my atten-tion. The MG Car Club Florida has a website where you can see an extensive setof pictures from the show.

http://www.mgcarclubflorida.org/

The show had a very good turn out con-sidering that all of the Minis were at acompeting Mini show nearby. Later thatafternoon, as we drove to the wedding,we passed a long line of Minis. Their carshow over, they were heading for the MG

1967 Daimler SP250-1

2004 MGZT-T

Car Club Florida’s show.

The car that really caught my eye wasthe 2004 MGZT-T. From a distance Ithought it was a BMW. It is the onlyone of it’s kind in the US and it is forsale. There are a lot of great pictureson the for sale web site.

http://www.wirewheel.com/2004-MG-ZT-T-260-ESTATE-WAGON.html

One thing I came to realize while talkingto the club members is how lucky we arehere in New England to have great sportscar roads. While the Florida LBC own-ers have good riding weather all year long, the roads are long and straight, places arevery distant from each other, and you getfrom place to place by riding on highways. They do not get to participate on the Sun-day tours through the New England coun-try side that our club members enjoy.

Another thing I learned while talking tothe two newsletter editors was how luckyour car club is to have members who con-tribute their stories to our Car-of-the-Month articles. Many of those stories willnow appear in the newsletters of otherBritish car clubs.
