Car of the Month

By Ray Boas

On Tuesday, January 26, 2010, I finallymailed my membership application to Brit-ish Cars of New Hampshire. Although Ihad printed it from the internet back inNovember, it sat on my desk until now. Recently I had renewed my quest for arestored TR3 and all the books I had pur-chased said to join the local clubs and letthe members know you are looking. I ama passive person, not a networker, but fi-nally in filling out the application I addedthe note that I was looking for a restoredTR3. The next day, Wednesday, I boughtmy 1958 TR3A. On Friday I thought Ishould email the club that my search wasover. I added the link to the ShutterflyAlbum and journal I had started to docu-ment my new adventure ( http://raystr3a2010.shutterfly.com/ ). John thenasked that I contribute this “car of themonth” story. However, this story goesback much further than the events of thepast few days.

During the 1950s, my dad worked as anauto mechanic and became an avid col-lector of old cars. He really loved them. Many unique automobiles, all with inter-esting stories, passed through his hands. And, since I grew up with them, I cameto love them too. There was the 1920something Lincoln limousine that was toobig to turn around in the driveway, and asa result he was thrilled to sell it immedi-ately for $75, making a $25 profit in a fewdays. I remember the 1929 LaSalle7 passenger touring car (radiatornever held water for long) that couldeasily carry a TR3 in the rear pas-senger area. But Model “T” Fordswere his first love. The first one hecompletely restored was a 1919Touring. One day, when I wasmaybe fourteen, we were drivingdown US Route 7 in our home townof Wilton, Connecticut. Suddenly mydad turned to me and said, “Ray, takethe wheel.” Thus it was that Ilearned to drive on a Model T Ford,a fact of which I am very proud.

His prize, however, was the 1910 Tour-ing, and he was the cranking champion atall the shows and meets. It was in myblood. I loved following him around, dig-ging into barns and seeing original cars. But as my Dad always told me, “Ray, youare not mechanical.” I knew he was right, but still to this day, I wish I had insistedhe teach me to work on cars.

In the late 50s, or early 60s (I was not ofdriving age yet), our neighbor bought twoTR3s; one for each of his sons. One wasblack and the other white. The boys of-ten would switch tops back and forth forvariety. I will never forget my first ridein one of their TR3s. I loved it!

In 1961, the year before I got my driver’slicense, my dad bought an un-restored1929 Model “A” Ford roadster for specu-lation. Because I loved this car so muchI pleaded with him to sell it to me for the$350 he had paid for it. Finally he gave inand it was mine. I think he always re-gretted that he did not make a profit onthat sale. That car was my life throughhigh school. When I left for college in1964, it went into storage. After gradua-tion, I earned a commission in the US

Navy Supply Corp and then begantwenty-two years of active duty.

Key West, Florida was my first duty sta-tion. I commuted to the ship on a Honda50 motorbike. However, soon an MGBcaught my eye. These were the dayswhen base pay was $343.20 a month, andyou would still have money left at the endof the month. I think I bought the MGBfor $600. Soon I was transferred toCharleston, SC, and the MGB became mydaily transportation. But I wanted myModel “A” back, so I had it trailered downto South Carolina. I sold the MGB to asailor. I later saw it torn apart in a park-ing lot – he had blown the engine.

Next I was told that I needed to attendfuel school in Virginia in preparation forduty in Antarctica. This was too far tocommute in the Model “A” even in 1972,so I began to look for another car. Therewas a TR3 advertised for sale on theCharleston Air Force Base, for $600 as Irecall. I almost bought it. But for somereason I ended up buying an Opel StationWagon for the commute. Not a badchoice for it lasted over 150,000 miles in-cluding a number of miles towing theModel “A” during moves, and two oceanvoyages on the fantail of the USS LUCEDDG-38. In 1978 I got the “bug” againand almost, almost bought a TR3 whilestationed in Philadelphia. But it did nothappen. Sadly, after over twenty yearsthe 1929 Roadster was sold and gone forgood.

Fast forward about twenty years. In 1995my late-wife, Cathy, and I married andwe moved back to my home state of

Connecticut. She understoodmy love for Model “As.” Oneday a car enthusiast customermentioned a Model “A” pickupthat was for sale. We were onour way to New Hampshire fora break and to buy books, so westopped along the way to see thepickup. It was stunning, sittingin a private airplane hanger un-der the wing of one of the lastDC3s. We bought it at once. However, it was not the same.

FIFTY YEARSLEADING TO MY

TR3A. IT WAS MEANT TO BE!

Car of the Month continued

It was not my roadster.

On eBay in 2001 a rare Model “A” twodoor phaeton showed up in the next town.My Dad had restored one. It was ex-pensive, but I went to see it, and next to itwas a beautifully restored 1930 Model“A” Roadster. This car had come fromthe original owner’s barn that was justmiles from our home and book shop inNew Preston. Not overdone, the carlooked as if it was just months out of theshowroom. I bought itimmediately. It turned out thatI was only the second owner, not counting the fellow who re-stored it for speculation or theintermediary. A month later wedrove the car to WestCornwall, Connecticut, and Itook a picture of the 1930 inthe same exact spot of my fa-vorite picture of my 1929 road-ster that was taken almost fortyyears before. Those imagesare on my website: (http://www.rayboasbookseller.com/neverchange.htm )

In 2002 Cathy and I moved toNew Hampshire. We sharedthis wonderful event, our “miracle story”,on our website ( http://w w w. r a y b o a s b o o k s e l l e r . c o m /message.htm ). Sadly, I lost Cathy andour two Westies in a car accident in May2008. Life will never be the same! InAugust, 2009 I visited my step-motherand step-sister in Florida. For some rea-son I caught the “TR3 bug” when I wasthere. I saw a restored TR3 on Craig’sList nearby, but did not check it out. (It isstill for sale today. Makes you wonder.) We went to St. Augustine for an after-noon, and while the ladies were in a craftshop I stopped in a die-cast model shop. There I spotted a highly detailed modelof a TR3A made by KYOSHO. It wasexpensive, but I bought it, and later foundout that I paid less than what it is worth. Returning to New Hampshire, the desireto purchase a TR3 continued. In Octo-

ber and November I began to actively fol-low what was for sale on eBay, Craig’sList, Hemming’s, and other internet ven-ues. I was getting educated as to whatwas being offered, and at what price. Onecar that showed up turned out to be just afew hours drive. I was almost sold be-fore I saw it, because when I called I wastold that it had been disassembled and re-stored. Was this a frame up? Wow, wasI deceived. Remember, I am not “me-chanical” but my Dad did teach meenough to be dangerous, and I do knowwhat I am looking at. This “frame-off”restoration had paint over dirt underneath,

misaligned panels, a door that would notclose. (“Oh, it is only a hinge pin prob-lem,” he said. No, I know what a hingepin problem is from my 1929 Ford!) I wastold that the foam insulation I discovered(the kind you use to seal gaps around win-dows during construction) was to keepwater from entering between the innerand outer rails. I am not that dumb!

In November I stepped up my efforts andposted a “want ad” on Craig’s list. I re-ceived an email from a gentleman in Ken-tucky offering a TR3 that he had re-stored. I asked how he saw my ad. Ithought Craig’s list had to be searchedlocally, but he directed me to an unaffili-ated site called www.Craiglook.com thatsearches all Craig’s list locations and pro-vides the results. We struck up an emailexchange, but I was still watching every-

thing, especially with the tip he gave me. A car showed up on eBay that only neededpaint. The body had been redone. Itseemed to be a bargain, but before bid-ding I needed to become even more edu-cated.

I headed across the river into Vermontthinking that a VW shop there could helpwith repairs. The owner said I had to gosee David at Sports Car Services inPutney (David Clark – 802 387-4540). Ihad heard of David before, but being “low-key” I had not pursued the tip. This timeI headed off to meet him. He changedmy life (at least my TR3 life) with his

wisdom and advice. I felt animmediate connection andtrust. “If you buy a restoredcar, you don’t know what is un-derneath,” he told me. “But,”he continued, “if you find a carwithin 250 miles I will be happyto look at it with you.” Hetoured me through his shop anddairy barn packed with close to30 British sports cars. I was im-pressed! That afternoon thecar on eBay that had promptedmy visit sold at well over$17,000.

December was beginning andI was producing and directingA CHRISTMAS CAROL for

The Walpole Players as our gift to thecommunity and as a benefit for the FallMountain Food Shelf. The fellow in Ken-tucky emailed me, and I replied that I hadto back off at this time because of theseother commitments. The new year ar-rived, and I started checking what TR3swere for sale “on-line” several times aday. Then my Kentucky email friend con-tacted me and asked, “Ray, still inter-ested?” We began a more intense inter-change, asking for more photos that wouldshow the panel alignment photos, etc. Iasked David for advice. He asked for stillmore photos that would show panel align-ment, since much of the rear of the carhad been replaced. By now, I was get-ting desperate. I really wanted a TR3 tofill my time and travels in 2010. Eventhough I was close to making a commit-ment for the TR3 in Kentucky, I contin-

Page 7: March, 2010 - TDSpersonalpages.tds.net/~johgie/bcnh/BCNH newsletter 03-10.pdf · 1964, it went into storage. After gradua-tion, I earned a commission in the US Navy Supply Corp and

7

ued looking to see what else was out there. If it had not rained that weekend in Ken-tucky, preventing the car from being takenoutside for the detailed pictures of thepanel joints, I probably would have boughtthe car. But fortunately for me, the rainscame.

I do not know why (Yes I do, God inter-venes.) but I checked Craiglook.com anhour earlier than usual on Wednesday,January 27th. An original unmolestedTR3 had just been listed in Connecticut. I emailed the seller for more pictures, Istewed about it for a few moments be-cause I want a restored car. David’swords haunted me, “You do not knowwhat is underneath the paint, or how theyreally redid the mechanicals.” I called theseller and talked about thirty minutesclosing the call saying I would like tocome down later. But first I wantedto call a friend. I called David. Hewas not in the shop yet. A tense thirtyminutes passed. I was reaching fora phone to call the seller to take thecar sight unseen when my other linerang and it was David. “Sounds likeit is worth a look,” he said, “comepick me up.” I replied, “Why don’twe go in your truck and trailer, it mightsave a trip.” He agreed, and twentyminutes later we were on the road.To make a short story shorter – highspeed run to Connecticut – look atthe car – lunch break – back to makeoffer – accepted – time to pay. I hadabout half the cash, and had my check-books. I did not stop at the bank to casha check, I was in a rush and whenever Ihave bought books in the last twentyyears, checks have never been a prob-lem. Not this time, so we jumped into theseller’s car, off to his bank just in time tohave the door locked behind us. Out ofstate check – NO, wire transfer, fine, butwill not be in his account until tomorrow. Ugh! It may have been David who said, credit card? The bank checked andagreed to process a cash advance. Well, there was a $126 fee, but that wascheaper than another trip, or losing thecar. We loaded it up and were back toDavid’s shop in Vermont at 7 PM. Tenhours had passed since I first saw thiscar “on-line”. Now, instead of the restored

one I had first considered, I was the proudowner of an original, unmolested TR3!

The next morning, Thursday, we pushedthe car into David’s shop and took a look. With each inspection it looked better andbetter. It was more solid than I had imag-ined. This TR3 had been in a barn since1969. Supposedly, the original ownerparked it there. The 1969 license platestill hung on the rear. Now the ironies of“meant to be” set in. I mentioned beforethat my Model “A” Ford roadster origi-nally lived in a barn a few miles from myhome and shop in Connecticut. Well, ifyou go over the hill in the opposite direc-tion a few miles to Kent you will find an-other barn where my TR3 sat for forty-one years. I now have two cars, both

from barns just miles from where I hadlived. Both black, unmolested and, notcounting the speculator middle-men, I amthe second owner of both. David and Ispent a few hours discussing our plan ofattack. I love to keep old cars in theiroriginal condition, if possible, and this par-ticular car has a really good body. I defi-nitely wanted the reliability that a com-plete engine and mechanical restorationwould bring me, but was not sure what todo about the body. So the next step wasfor David to call his body restoration ex-pert, Jason Marechaux of Mount Holly,VT (phone 802 259-2452). He agreed tomeet us on Saturday to examine the car.I said that I wanted to conserve the en-gine compartment, cockpit, and boot area, and have the refinishing match the exte-rior finish. “Time for a road trip,” Davidsaid. He wanted to move a TR6 to

Jason’s shop and I tagged along to seework-in-progress there including a guttedbare metal TR3. “Oh no,” I thought, “Ican’t do that to my Black Beauty!” Weadjourned for lunch, and Jason talkedabout full body restoration. David wascoming to my aid emphasizing originalconservation. Jason saw our point, andthe challenge.

Four days into this adventure (I was wor-ried about what would occupy my time in2010 – no longer) and I was heading offto The Balsams for a break. David hadtold me about his friend Mike and said Ishould visit him on the way home so Istopped for a visit. David had filled Mikein on our project, and shared the pictures. Mike was envious of my car, emailing

David saying, “don’t touch that car, anyone can restore one, no one canage one like that.” For decadesMike has specialized in TR3s andparts. He showed me through hisbarn - all three levels and aroundthe property. But, we did not get tothe house across his fields that hebought to store more parts in. Whata resource of used parts and newold stock from Triumph dealers thathe has bought out over the years. Who would ever want to buy anoverseas repro when NOS is avail-able? Keep him in mind (MichaelBuonanduci, Corinth, VT 802 439-

5815), I will find what I need in his vastunbelievable stock.

As I am finishing this story, I have ownedmy 1958 TR3 for less than two weeks, and am more excited than the first day. Iam a “shunpiker” and love to traverse theback roads and explore. I know wheremy “black beauty” and I will tour, picnic, and head for overnights. I don’t want toown a show car, I enjoy fun cars so I donot have to worry about scratches. I wantreliability, and I will have that 100%. Therest will be a conservation effort, as weare really custodians of these old cars. They should be preserved for future gen-erations to enjoy. Do follow my progresson the Shutterfly site, and email me ([email protected] ) if you would likeme to add you as a member. Reflectingback, this was “meant to be.” See youon the road soon!

E-TypeBoot Hinge Repair

by Norma Karle

Yes, we were embarrassed into fixing theboot hinges on the E-type. Thank youDiana for the lovely photo in the newslet-ter showing our custom designed bootprop. Since we own a company that re-builds hood hinges, door hinges and trunkhinges it was not a good advertisementfor us.

So, we sent Mo off to determine whatwas wrong. Being a British car mechanicfor many years we suspected he’d be ableto fix them easily. It wasn’t somethinghe hadn’t seen after all. He crawled intothe boot and told us we had a bigger prob-lem than we thought (how many of ushaven’t heard this before?) but, that wehad caught it in time. It turns out that thetrunk hinges have these flat sharp steelsprings on them and that several of thesprings had broken and were now chew-ing through the wiring. The really badnews is that there is a wiring harness neareach spring. Oops! It is simply a matterof “when” it would complete devouringthe wires, not “ if” it would.

The spring that is sticking up shouldbe wrapped around the post. This is

what was chewing on the wiringharness.

Deciding it would be good to avoid a melt-down of the wiring harness, ala WayneBolen, Mo wrapped the wires so theywere protected. On a warmer day hewent back and removed one of the boothinges and brought it to the shop. We

were able to get the springs from SNGBarratt in Manchester. Yes, it takes fiveof them per hinge. They are these tightlyrolled flat spring steel pieces. The nextquestion was how do you get them on thehinge? Very carefully! All five are woundtogether and then attached. Of course, being British, they do not comepreassembled. You might not need to re-place all five and then you’d end up withextra pieces. Best not to waste a $5 pieceof spring steel. Much better to make themechanic figure out how to assemble themwithout losing fingers. Yes, they cancause severe finger damage.

Five new finger removers,I mean springs.

Looking around the shop for some kindof tool Mo discovers the steering columnstand. (This is the device he uses to holdsteering columns during disassembly andreassembly. Yes, we rebuild steering col-umns for classic cars.) The metal post isjust the right size to wind the springs on.

Mo wrapping the springs aroundeach other. Then attach them to the

hinge with the bolt.

Spring installed now it needs to bewrapped around the post. Mo placed thehinge in a vice and then used a long screw-driver to pull the spring back and wrap itaround the post. Below you can’t see itbut Mo still has 8.5 fingers.

9

All done with nice new springs. Paintthem up to look pretty, reinstall on

the car and we’re good to go.

The only problem now is that you don’twant to be leaning over the boot whenyou pull the release. You’ll get your nosebroken when it springs up. Hey Rod,come here! Want to see something?

Hint #1 - Those of you with E-types mightwant to take a look at your hinges. Ifyour boot lid does not stay up you mayalso have broken springs that need to befixed.

Hint #2 – You can fix your own, but thesprings are very sharp and it could meanthe hinges get a bit slick with that red stuffthat leaks from your fingers. It does notmake the hinges work any better so it isbest to avoid this.

Hi Everyone,

Have you wondered what happenedto Bill and Linda Cagan? Well, we’refine and on to new adventures. Letme catch you up on why you haven’tseen us at many of the events.

Over the past twenty years, I haveheld many roles in the car club. I havewas one of the founding members ofthe club, director, founder and direc-tor of the Show of Dreams, and I amcurrently one of your membership di-rectors. During the past two yearsour careers have changed greatly. After forty-five years, Bill retired fromthe vending business and I decided togo back to work full-time.

Two and half years ago, I became aprofessional dog trainer with Petsmartin Manchester, NH. For those of you,who know me; know that my passionhas always been kids and animals. After being a Professional Nanny inBedford for fifteen years, it was timeto pursue my other passion, caring foranimals. To get started on pursuingmy passion, Bill and I started dog sit-ting for our friend’s dogs while theywent on vacation. Knowing that car-ing for dogs is what both Bill and Iwanted to do, we started an in-homeboarding service, Bedford K-9 Re-sort. When your dog is boarded withus, your dog is not boarded in a ken-

nel; they live as a member of our fam-ily.

Bill is the resident innkeeper and Ipamper and spoil them. We both sharetime playing, caring, and loving yourpets while they are with us.

We’d like to extend an invitation to youto consider having your pet(s) visit orstay with us anytime. Along withBoarding, we offer Doggie DayCare, Socialization and NatureWalks. These services are availableby the day or by the week. Too busyto housebreak a new puppy?Housebreaking is also available.

Please check out Bedford K-9 Resortonline at www.bedfordk-9resort.com

We are now taking reservations forFebruary break spring break and forthe summer of 2010.

Why men shouldn'twrite advice columns

Dear Uncle Walter

I hope you can help me here. The otherday I set off for work leaving my hus-band in the house watching the TV asusual. I hadn't gone more than a miledown the road when my engine conkedout and the car shuddered to a halt. Iwalked back home to get my husband'shelp.

When I got home I couldn't believe myeyes. He was in the bedroom, in our bed, with a neighbour.

I am 32, my husband is 34 and we havebeen married for twelve years.

When I confronted him, he broke downand admitted that he'd been having an af-fair for the past six months. I told him tostop or I would leave him.

He was laid off from his job six monthsago and he says he has been feeling in-creasingly depressed and worthless. Ilove him very much, but ever since I gavehim the ultimatum he has become in-creasingly distant. I don't feel I can getthrough to him anymore.

Can you please help?

Sincerely,

Mrs Deidre Usk

Dear Deidre:

A car stalling after being driven a shortdistance can be caused by a variety offaults with the engine. Start by checkingthat there is no debris in the fuel line. If itis clear, check the jubilee clips holding thevacuum pipes onto the inlet manifold. Ifnone of these approaches solves the prob-lem, it could be that the fuel pump itself isfaulty, causing low delivery pressure tothe carburetor float chamber.

I hope this helps.

Walter
