Car of the Month

continued page 13

by Tom Varney

My car is a 1962 MGA 1600 Mk II whichI purchased in 1968 for $800.00. It wasin good condition with average mileageand no problems. The color was red, as itis now and it had white leather seats, tanroof, red interior and an AM radio. Theserial number is 105,000 which was at thevery end of MGA production. The whiteleather seats indicate to me that the carmay have been a special order.

In 1968, I was 19 years old and RichardNixon was the president. It was the sum-mer after my freshman year at UNH andthe sixties movement was in full swing. Idrove this car for four years until I had afull time job on road construction andneeded a more regular car. As I was testdriving a newer car, a salesman took theMG for a spin and afterwards offered me$100.00 as a trade in. As soon as thewords were out of his mouth, I knew Iwould never trade it in. I bought a redToyota for $2,400.00 that day, but theMGA went home with me too.

So the car was stored in my grandfatherscellar/garage, in Rochester in my parentsopen sided shed, and finally in my newlyconstructed barn in Alton, NH. I alwaysknew that I would someday bring it backto life and now, ever so slowly, it is re-gaining its lost stature of forty-one yearsago.

In the intervening years, the car has beenpart of my history and has continued tosurvive despite my wife of thirty-twoyears, my four children, and a few reces-sions. In reflecting on this, I know that

foreign sports cars run deep in my blood.Attending the British Invasion in Vermont, without a British car, and seeing all thesports cars driving up and down the roadbrings back the days in the sixties wherethese cars were in their prime. In thosedays, walking around the UNH campusseeing Triumphs, Jaguars, Morgans,Porsches, and Alpha Romeos in the park-ing lots, along the sidewalks and on theroad was as enjoyable to me as studentprotests. Driving my MGA was alwaysfun, even when having to push the car tostart it and freezing on cold nights. I ac-cepted these things without complaint.Good times were had in this car.

In the 1950s my uncle, who lived nextdoor, had a Jaguar XK120 that he racedat the Dover track. After a few years hetraded it for a bug eye Sprite and died inhis first race when it flipped over, crush-ing him. There were no roll bars in thosedays. I was eleven and old enough to belearning to appreciate these cars despitethis family tragedy. My older cousin wasdriving an MG Magnette and when Iturned sixteen I bought 1959 Nash Met-ropolitan, which I drove for a summer.

When I was a junior In high school, a se-nior classmate had an MGA which I of-ten admired in the school parking lot. Otherclassmates cars were American but I wasdrawn to foreign sports cars. After my1961 Valiant rusted out I needed a newcar and looked for a sports car until Ifound my MGA.

Over the years I experience the normalBritish car problems. While in college theclutch slave cylinder popped out twice;once at the Rochester Toll booth. Whenthis happens the car doesn’t move andhas to be towed. I always worried aboutthis afterwards and but I was able to drivethe car to Army Officer School at FortEustis, Virginia for without a problem. Anearlier summer, I pulled out the engine andtransmission to change the synchronizerrings in the transmission. A few dentsaccumulated in the front and back fend-ers.

Fast forward to around 1980 when I gotthe car running briefly for a summer. Mywife scrapped the rear fender with our

pick-up (not on purpose) and ripped agash out of it. Later our goat jumpedthrough the tan colored roof(might havebeen on purpose). More dents accumu-lated. A small timber fell from the upperfloor in the barn and dented the hood. Thefour girls used to play in the car and Idon’t know haw many kittens(wild &domesticated) were born in it.

In 2002, I pulled the car out of the barnwith the exhaust pipe remaining on thefloor and the wheels seized. With gas flow-ing out of the leaking carburetors, anti-freeze out of the water pump, I set to re-placing gaskets and parts. I was able todrive it for two summers in a somewhatreliable mode, which was fun. The nextstep was to restore the body. I consid-ered doing this myself, but decided to takeit to a local body shop where I could get agood deal on the work and a great paintjob. Three years later, the car emerged, looking new with great paint, grill, mir-rors, etc. After this frustrating time pe-riod, I was able to drive it in the springuntil May 31, when it needed to be in-spected. I took it to a mechanic to inspectit and re-adjust the carburetors. Hecouldn’t resist taking off the head to ex-amine the head gasket which, as I sus-pected, was leaking. From there it wasthe bearing, oil seals, radiator, leaking gastank, etc. which took him all summer. Ifinally got the car back in the fall and hadfun driving it until November. It was agreat thrill bringing me back to myyounger days. After the long winter I wasreally looking forward to the 2008 sea-son. I wanted to attend the British carevents, as advertised in this news letter, with my very own car!!! I rolled it out ofthe barn and down the ramp to jump start

Well, it looks like spring really is gonnacome. Those of you, like me, who haven’tyet gotten their cars out of winter’s hi-bernation are no doubt chomping at thebit in anticipation of “the day.”

Members are coming out of hibernationtoo. It was very pleasant to seeseveral faces at the April Meeting thatwe haven’t seen recently and a couplethat we have never seen. For those ofyou that haven’t come out yet let me en-courage you to do so. As I have statedbefore in this space, our monthly meetingare really not so much “Business Meet-ing” as they are just an excuse to get to-gether with our friends. The purpose ofour meetings is to meet.

On that front I strongly encourage you togive special attention to the Calendar ofEvents. Norma Karle goes to great ef-forts to be sure that we know of as manyopportunities to get together (and to showoff our cars) as possible.

I further encourage you to “organize” oneof those “events” yourself. We are allvery busy people with very full sched-ules. It is not possible for all of us toattend all of the events that are sched-uled. That means that, if we only havetwo or three of our own Club eventsscheduled, then there’s a good chance thatsome members may not be able to attendmore than one of them. However, if wehad six or eight events scheduled, then

even if you can only get to half of them, itwould still be three or four opportunitiesto get together with other members. Af-ter all, that’s why you joined, isn’t it?

“Events” do not need to be a “big deal”with a lot of serious organization involved. Just pick a place that you like to go orsomething that you like to do and “invite’the rest of us to join you. Not everyonewill, but my guess is that the ones that dowill be glad that they did.

I, for one, am looking forward to seeingas many of you as possible on the “LupinFestival Ride” to the Sunset Hill Housein Sugar Hill on June 13th. Please lookelsewhere in this issue for further details.

Let’s get out there and drive these cars. That’s what they were made for.

Bob Mitchell

Director Wade called the meeting toorder at 7:10 PM. There were 29 mem-bers in attendance. Potential new mem-ber Jim Freeman was seated at the tablewith yours truly and other Show ofDreams planners – this might be a mis-take on Bob Mitchell’s part – we im-mediately started drafting him for tasks. He has an MGA he’s restoring with histwo daughters– and might join. An oldmember who rarely shows for meet-ings was there – Jon and Ann Bergeronwho have seven British cars. Jon isbrave enough to invite us to his homethe Friday night of the car show for aget together involving food, adult bev-erages (bring your own) and a bonfire.Other recent members Bob Fallier whohas a Lotus and Gil DeCosta with a1966 Sunbeam Tiger were also in at-tendance. Welcome to all – we hopeto see you at future meetings.

Dean Webber announced that he knowsof TR6 in parts that is for sale at areasonable offer in Pembroke, NH. Thebody has rusted out but there are lotsof good parts. Please call 226-4933 ifyou’re interested.

John Giese presented the treasurer’sreport in the last newsletter. Thesecretary’s report was accepted asprinted in the newsletter since no onecould remember reading it (even theperson who wrote it).

BCNH goes Hollywoodby Dave Herrick

Last Spring a friend told me he was pro-ducing a movie to be set in the 1930’sand asked about using our 1936 Rolls inone of the scenes. To make a long storyshort, that is how I found myself leavingMont Vernon, NH at 5 am on September16th headed for the heart of Marylandhorse country. The Rolls was beingtrailered by another friend who, as a side-line, delivers vintage car parts from oneend of the country to another. To my sur-prise, we only made it to Peterboroughbefore making the first delivery of the day(a set of bumpers for Charlie Bass)! After a few other stops along the way,we pulled into Moncton, MD at about 4:30pm where shooting was in progress at abeautiful Victorian inn.

The entire inn had been rented by the pro-duction company for a 24 hour period andwas now a beehive of activity. Our scenewould be filmed at nightfall so we wereinvited to watch the shooting that wasgoing on inside. “Shooting” was the rightword as we saw an actor being shot overand over again until the director was sat-isfied! We learned that this was the sameactor who would later drive the Rolls and,not to worry, they were just shooting thescenes out of order.

We had been told very little about the plotin advance and found out that the movieis titled “The Last Breath.” It’s a mys-tery/thriller that starts out in the 1930’sand ends up in present day. From a driv-ing standpoint our scene was simple. Theactor just had to storm the Rolls down

the circular driveway, stand on the brakes, exit hurriedly, and then run into the inn.The “exit hurriedly” part took some prac-tice, however, as the driver’s door (on thisright hand drive car) is obstructed by thefloor mounted hand brake and gear shiftlever. Normally this is not a problem asyou can just slide across the seat andgracefully egress through the left door.Unfortunately this did not work for theintended camera angle and required a lotof agility to accomplish quickly andsmoothly!

Our scene began with the silhouette of awoman appearing briefly at a second storywindow. She is being filmed by a cam-era mounted on a long boom reaching upto the second floor. As she disappears, our car is cued to proceed down the drive-way. Meanwhile, the boom mounted cam-era is slewing smoothly from the secondstory window down towards the ap-proaching Rolls ending up level with theopening door as the car screeches to astop. Synchronizing the timing betweencar and camera took half a dozen tries.

Actually, the Rolls does not “screech” butrather “squeaks” to a stop. Its brakescan sound a bit like a school bus whenheavily trod upon. The crew loved thesound of the brakes and had me drivealong while repeatedly stomping on thepedal as they chased me with big furrymicrophones and 28-bit digital recorders! They also recorded every other sound thecar makes: pulling on the handbrake (click, click, click); slamming the door (the“thunk” brought a grin from the soundguy as if it sounded exactly as he hadexpected), revving the engine (recordedfrom the front), revving the engine (re-corded from the rear), etc, etc. Theseeffects will be overdubbed as part of thefinal editing and I can’t wait to hear how

they will sound.

The crew finished shooting our scene at12:30 am, a long day as we had an earlymorning start). Because the entire innhad been rented for the duration we wereable to spend the night for free in luxuri-ous $400 a night accommodations. Get-ting up at 7 am, we loaded the Rolls andheaded north once more. After makingmultiple deliveries along the way, eatingat a “Choke & Puke” in Bushkill, PA, anddoing time at a D.O.T. weigh station, wefinally pulled in to Mont Vernon at 11:30pm on the 17th. All in all, we had driven1500 miles to shoot a scene in which theRolls drove 150 feet about six times! Suchis show biz!

The Last Breath is scheduled for releasein June. Wouldn’t it be neat if it came tothe Milford Drive-In for BCNH night!!!

Lupin SeasonNorth of the

NotchJune 13 (and 14?) 2009

At the end of this article you will see alink to “Our Favorite Back Roads” writ-ten by Nancy Henderson. I foundNancy's description of that route so ap-pealing that I immediately wanted to "takethe tour" - so I called Nancy.

Nancy is the current Innkeeper of the his-toric Sunset Hill House in Sugar Hill, NH.Built in the late 1800s the original grandhotel would accommodate 350 guests. What remains is much more modest – butthe setting, surrounded by the GreenMountains, remains spectacular. Andmid-June is Lupin Season.

So, I propose that BCNH takes a ride onNancy’s Favorite Back Roads – and visitNancy while we’re at it.

Along the lines of the Shaker Village ride,I suggest two separate routes – one upthe eastern portion of the State, with asecond group going up a western route.Members are free to join up anywherealong the way. If you look at the routemap, you will see that most members livewithin 10 or 15 miles of one of the tworoutes.

In fact, since the two starting points areonly about 25 miles apart, some mem-bers from the southeast might want to dothe western route – since they don’t getto see that part of the State so often –and some “westerners” might want to dothe eastern route for similar reasons.

Each route is about 130-140 miles, so atMG-TD speeds – and with multiple stopsas additions members join along the way– it should take 3 ½ to 4 hours for eachgroup to complete their route. If we startat about 9:00 we should get to Nancy’sPlace at around 1:00.

Nancy is psyched about the idea of hav-ing 20 or 30 British sports cars arrive andserving High Tea to the occupants. Withthe Shaker Village run we learned thatHigh Tea (as opposed to Low Tea) is amuch more substantial meal.

Those that would like to stay in the areafor the weekend – maybe there at theSunset Hill House – are encouraged tomake reservations well ahead of time –Lupin Season is a big draw up there. Beaware that many inns in the area – in-cluding the Sunset Hill House – have atwo night minimum on weekends duringLupin Season.

Joyce and I plan to “make a weekend ofit” and stay at the Sunset Hill House.

Those that chose to just make this a daytrip will be welcome to head home afterTea – doing any additional touring theychose along the way.

Please do contact Bob Mitchell ([email protected] or 772-1116) with atleast and Indication of Interest. If thereisn’t much interest, then we may need tobag the High Tea idea and those of usthat do go can just catch lunch as we canwhen we get there.

it and drive it up and down the road withmy wife. We did this often after supperin the spring to get her warmed up for alonger trip. On the first out-of-town-tripto Dover, the oil pressure went down andstayed down. We made it home, but off itwent to the mechanic. He parked the carin his shop, got real busy, and its beenthere ever since. Guess we got a year offree storage.
