Carl’ s 1962 MGBMy 1962 MGB was the 850th manu-factured during the latter part of 1962.The car’s life began in California, with a18-year stay in Ohio and 5 plus years inits current home in Hampton, NH. In2012 it was the Marque in SOD 50years of the MGB. The car was restoredin 1992 in San Diego to the specs of theoriginal ads for the B, in the November1962 Car and Driver. The last ownerliked the blue interior that was not origi-nal to the car. That detail was correctedby me as a former upholsterer during highschool and college.

My fascination with British cars beganin 1958 while helping my uncle at hisupholstery shop in Hyannis, MA. I spentthe next seven summers and weekendsworking in the shop eventually installingconvertible tops, tonneau covers, recov-ering seats and panels, and installing car-pet on many foreign sports cars. I alsolearned how to use a heavy duty sewingmachine, the most important tool in carrestoration.

In 1964 I purchased my first British car,a 1959 MGA 1500. The car was black

with a red interior, black top and wirewheels. The car ran extremely well andthe only tinkering that went on was withthe interior, top and side curtains. Thecar needed paint to be perfect. I wasable to swap an interior redo on a Fordtruck for a new paint job. I drove thiscar until I traded it in for a brand new1965 MGB at Gracia’s Motors in NewBedford, MA our local British Leylanddealer. The 65 exterior was white withblack leather and white piping, but thiscar was a bit more civilized, it had win-dows and a heater that actually kept youwarm in the winter months.

By the end of 1967 my family expandedand I needed to get back into a largercar. So Chevrolet cars were part of mylife through the early seventies. Thesports car bug never really went away, just lay dormant for a while. As my ca-reer advanced, we were able to afford asecond car sometime around 1978. Ifound a Triumph TR-3A at my localDatsun dealership and closed the deal.

I sold the TR-3 in 1982 and over thenext 16 plus years experimented with acouple of Corvettes and three 911Porches. These cars were powerful andhandled extremely well but, after a fewspeeding tickets, and a stack of expen-sive repair receipts I was ready to getback with something British.

While on a trip to Manchester late sum-mer 1999, I spotted a 54 TF that lookedgreat from a distance, so I stopped tohave a closer look. The dealer had thiscar on consignment, selling it for a friend.

The car was solid, had an acceptableinterior, and relatively nice paint. After a30-minute test drive and a look under-neath on the lift I was impressed. Theprice was quite high so we continued tonegotiate over the next several weeksuntil we settled on a figure. The car waspicked up the following weekend, andwhile driving from Manchester to Hamp-ton in late November I realized that thiswas a car for the warmer months.

Having owned a few MGs a friend ofmine asked if I would look at an MGBthat was stored in a barn in Hampton. The owner had passed away and his wifecould not drive a standard shift andwanted to sell the car. As it turns out, theB was a 1963 that needed a completerehab. Rust was evident in the floors, thepassenger outer rocker, as well as thepassenger rear outer and inner panels. There was no top and the remainder ofthe interior was trashed. I thought the carshould be stripped for parts, until westarted the 18G up and drove it downthe road. It ran well and drove straight,so I suggested that she sell the car for$2,500 which would allow a personsome space to invest in refurbishment.Well the car sat around for two moreyears with a price of tag of $7,500 with-out even a nibble. I eventually purchasedthe car at my original price.

The car was painted old English whitewhich from close examination was theoriginal color. As a retiree with nothingto do I installed the carpet, interior, top

So Saith the Prime Minister

Well, spring is officially here.

You will find pictures of the BCNHSpring Tech Session elsewhere in thisissue. Held at the Historic Motor Sportsfacility (aka the BCNH Clubhouse) at174 Raymond Road in Candia, therewere between 40 and 50 BCNH Mem-bers and T-Party Members (and otherinterlopers) in attendance to get a com-prehensive review of carburetion andother fuel related issues – courtesy ofour own Club member KlausSteinbrueck. Klaus has been building,Servicing, Driving and Racing Britishand “other European cars” for most ofhis life and his depth of knowledge wasobvious to all that attended.

You will not be surprised to hear thatmany of those attending stayed aroundfor several hours after the formal TechSession was over. It was interesting towatch as the various “discussion groups”formed – and then re-formed – duringthat time. As I looked around the build-ing there were usually several separategroups in animated conversations, butthe people in each of those groupswas constantly changing. It was in-teresting to watch as every few minutestwo or three people would break offfrom one group and wonder over to joinwith another.

Of course some of that “movement” in-cluded moving over to the “buffet tables”that were laden with all kinds of pot-luckgoodies brought by the Members. Spe-cial thanks go out to Paul & DorisKarle. Even though they are nolonger here in body (they havemoved to Arizona) they were here inthe spirit of their gas grill which wasused to cook the burgers and dogs thatNorma Karle bought and brought andthat were paid for from the T-PartyClub treasury (thank you JudyKrongelb.)

Check out the Events calendar on thewww.BCNH.org website to see all ofthe “opportunities” that there are to gettogether with fellow BCNHers – andmembers of other car clubs – to enjoyyour car(s) and their fellowship. We haveat least one event scheduled for everyweekend of June – and two or threethings scheduled for some weekends. Iinvite you to pick the ones that are ofmost interest to you and to participate inas many as possible. I specifically rec-ommend the British-by-the-Sea gath-ering in June 5 because Rolls-Royce/Bentley will be the Featured Marque andyou will have an opportunity to seemore Rolls-Royce/Bentleys in oneplace than you probably have everhad – including those owned by Clubmembers Mark Harrison & AmyBailey and Dave & Liz Herrick .

You should most certainly not miss TheQueen’s Birthday Party at ElliotMor e & Jaimee Walters’ on June 18.That is always a great time. A ProperBritish Lawn Party with Croquet andBadminton – and lots of food and liba-tions.

I’ll also put in a plug for the Lupine Fes-tival Drive on June 11th – because that’sone that I particularly enjoy.

As we have said many times before, thereason this club has so many interest-ing things to do is because its mem-bers do so many interesting things. Please help us to keep that interest levelhigh.

The Members that have the most fun arethe ones that are there to get in on it.

The secretary’s report and thetreasurer’s reports were accepted asprinted in the newsletter which simplymeans no one read them or read themand didn’t remember what happened atthe meeting anyway.

We had two new members at the meet-ing. We welcomed Larry Tibbetts fromLee, he has an MG-TD and has ownedMG’s since he was 16. Jeff and IanWolf were the other two new membersfrom Merrimack. They have a RollsRoyce which was on the cover of thelast newsletter. Welcome to all!

Prime Minister Bob passed aroundsamples of the car badges that he is inthe process of ordering.

The next order of business was to talkabout upcoming events. Coffee andCars, the May tech session at HistoricMotorsports, John Bowe planned andhas since conducted a ride. Membersattended the Blessing of the Fleet (ofcars) in Alfred, Maine that our new mem-bers from the New England MG CarClub put together.

And the craziness of the season beginswith something planned for most week-ends. Forget about painting the houseand mowing the grass! Who needs togo to another graduation? Just sendthem a check! Come out and play withyour BCNH friends and have a greattime.

Coming up we have a full calendar soplease check out the calendar – some ofthe highlights are the British by the Seashow in Waterford CT. There are agroup of us going down on Friday, wewill spend the day in Newport on Satur-

Jim Blackford won the not quite 50-50 and donated the $40 back to theporta potty fund, Thank you ! Weadded another $190 to the fund so wecan have those great rest stations forthe car show. Show of Dreams Tee Shirt

The “feel” of the monthly Cars & Cof-fee event is starting to change dramati-cally as we go into the Summer Season.During the winter months, peopleseemed to be happy to “come early andstay late” because they were really look-

ing forward to getting together withfriends that they didn’t get to see muchduring the winter – and (to be honest)because there wasn’t much else to do.

Now, as the seasons change, we areseeing that more people just stop in foran hour or two to touch base and “tosee what’s new” – but then move on toother things. One member mentionedthat just about every house they droveby on the way in had at least one personout working in the garden – and that theyneeded to get out there too.

But there were lots of new things to lookat. Not so much in the building, but inthe parking lot. It is no surprise that thepeople that were driving the SUVs tothe Cars & Coffee in previous monthsare now bringing their own toys, andthere was more to see in the lot than inthe building.

We had a greater variety this month. Wenow seem to be “on the program” forthe Alfa-Romeo Club and the Mini Cluband the Porsche Club and the CobraClub to name a few with a pretty good

Spring Tech Session

smattering of American Cars out theretoo; I saw several Corvettes. There wasenough eye-candy to satisfy most eyesand my guess is that a number of peoplenever made it into the building at all.

We really don’t know how many peoplecame through because so many chosenot to take Raffle Tickets because theydidn’t expect to still be there for thedrawing, or they came in after the draw-ing was over. Raffle Tickets have beenthe best method that we have had forcounting attendance.

We have had to increase the “CoffeeService” to two 100 cup coffee makersof “Hi-Test” and 36 cups of “Un-leaded”– and we went through it all, sothat tells you something. I don’t thinkthat anyone when away disappointed.

Hope to see you next month on Satur-day, June 11.

Many thanks to BCNH Member KlausSteinbrueck for being the Presenter atthe 2016 BCNH/T-Party Spring TechSession. Klaus has devoted his life tothe proper “care taking” of British and“other fine European” cars.

This Session was focused on carburetion.Carburetors are both simple and com-plex. They have a job to do that is moredifficult than you might think. Gasolineonly burns correctly when the Air-to-FuelRatio is very close to 15 pounds of airfor every one pound of fuel. With notvery much “extra” fuel, it is too “rich” anddoes not burn well. With not very much“extra” air, it is too “lean” and the “extra”oxygen in there looks for something elseto burn – like pistons or valves.

Klaus talked about the advantages of theVariable Venturi design of the SU Car-buretors used on most British Cars andof the wide-open throttle advantages of

the Weber Carburetors used on manyrace cars – and also on street cars.

This Tech Session was scheduled forimmediately after the Cars & Coffee,so we also had some non BCNH/T-Party folks that stayed for the Session. All seemed to get a good bit out of thepresentation.

As usual, we had a pot-luck cookoutafter the Session with Burgers & Dogsprovided (this year) by the T-Party cluband all the rest of the goodies providedby Members. A good time was had byall. By Bob Mitchell Prime Minister

On April 24th, club member John Bowehad his Annual Spring Tour. The seasonkicked off nicely with perfect weather. We had 25 cars with 35 occupants. Hereis what John wrote about the drive:

Thanks to everyone for coming today, quite the group we had showed up, arecord number of cars and people.

Just finished closing up the shop and wewent through almost three carafes of cof-fee, a dozen donuts, nearly all the “do-nut holes” and all the other goodies thatpeople brought. Thanks to all thatbrought the “extras”, they must havebeen good, just about all disappeared.

A very well behaved group today, onlya couple cars strayed from the route, butthey soon found their way back to thegroup. Overall, I think it went very well. The weather was just about perfect, bluesky, light breeze, maybe a little coolerthan what we wanted, but warm enoughto have the tops down. The roads werefor the most part, clear and empty ofother traffic. Maybe the mild winter keptthe roads from getting all beat up and

full of pot holes.

Our cars ran well, no side of the roadrepairs.

The Green Bean restaurant was morethan capable for our group. For thosewho returned to the shop after lunch, thatpart of ride was a little shorter, but alsogood.

Thanks to Debbie and Stan for goingwith me last Thursday to help do the“trial” run. Really, they did all the techni-cal work, GPS, note taking, writing andprinting sheets. All I did was drive thecar.

Thanks again to all for coming. Hope youenjoyed the First Drive of 2016.

See ya, John Bowe

The third meeting of the BCNH North-ern Council was held at the CommonMan in Plymouth on Thursday, May 21st.

The meeting was called to order by Min-ister Karl at 7:02 pm with 23 currentand hopefully a few new members at-tending. The secretary’s and treasurer’sreport were accepted as printed in thenewsletter.

Karl started off with a story of taking aride to Massena, NY to meet a gentle-man that ended up having more than justone car for sale. In fact, he had eight

motorcycles, three Triumphs, two MGs,two JEEPs and an assortment of manyparts and tools for sale.

We next met a couple new to the group,Ron and Sally Small from Franconia.Ron had owned his own business forover 30 years working on British carsand he still has his sense of humor. Theyhave an Austin Healey, an E type and aBentley amongst their collection of cars.

Shirley Splaine gave us an update on her33 MGJ2, Maggie, which is in the pro-cess of getting a new dashboard fromEngland. The repairs are not quite com-pleted, but Shirley did make it clear thatMaggie needs to be ready for the up-coming Castle in the Clouds show whichwill be on Saturday, July 11th. Shirleybrought her sister Joan, and Russ wasthere to drive the ladies.

Several people brought their cars, topdown and collars up for the chilly ridehome. Prime Minister Bob brought hisMGTD and Neil Flaherty brought hismodern MGTD. Marge and ElliotGrover brought their MGTD as well.Beverly Bonner arrived in her SunbeamAlpine and Pete Wirth brought his TR 8.

Don Margeson told a very funny storyof his adventure with his 67 Austin Healybreaking down, hitchhiking to Washing-ton, DC in the middle of the night, andtowing the Healy home with his 67 MGB.Well you can laugh now but at the time itprobably was not a lot of fun. He didluck out and find a board on the roadthat said Washington, DC, which madethe hitchhiking a little easier (what luck).

Bob and Diana Stanley passed aroundregistration forms for the Show ofDreams coming up on July 25th. Theyalso provided information for sponsor-ship for the upcoming 20th Annual Showof Dreams to benefit the High Hopesfoundation of NH and the NH FoodBank. The British Beer Company inManchester has donated $500 to theShow of Dreams, a cruise in is on the

schedule for June 9th to tour the beercompany.

Willy Lutz told us about his good friendthat worked on his MG and RobMedynski, owner of British Vacuum Unitwas able to join us along with his MumJeanne and his sister Alice. Paul andDoris Karle made the trip up with Normawho was introduced as the President andthen as our Club Secretary, she doeswear many hats!

Prime Minister Bob did an overview ofseveral upcoming events including Brit-ish By The Sea, June 7th and BritishMotor Car Festival, June 10th – 14th. Hethen turned the floor over to Diana whofilled us in on the details for a “Show andTell” event scheduled for Sunday August9th at the Taylor Community in Laconia.More information to follow. Please comeout for this great event if you can, a cook-out is planned.

Minister Karl adjourned the meeting at8:04 pm and everyone had a chance toappreciate the cars in the parking lotbefore departing for the evening. Anyerrors or omissions are due to incorrectcorrections from Minister Karl.

Respectfully submitted,

Karl & Kellie Braconier

24 Members (12 cars) from all partsof the State (Bill and Sue MacDuffwere there from Peterborough) gath-ered at the “Recycle Store” of Habitatfor Humanities in Plymouth to go on thefirst Drive organized by the Mem-bers of the Lakes Region and NorthCouncil. In this case the Organizerswere Bob & Kim Dougherty, Thankyou Bob & Kim.

Oh, on the subject of Members fromall over the State, Lee and ShirleySpencer drove all the way over tothe Starting Point in Plymouth eventhough the Chocorua Camping Vil-lage (KOA) that they own and oper-ate is about ½ mile from Hobbs.

This was a “Gimmick Rally” where youhad to keep your eyes open to find thenames of Revolutionary War and CivilWar Generals; to spot Pink Flamingosand Covered Bridges – and to identifyone of the Prince of Darkness satelliteoperations in NH. Oh, and also to re-member that Hobbs was the name ofthe toy tiger in the Calvin and Hobbscartoon series.

A great time was had by all, but thereseems to be some irony in the factthat Elliot Mor e and Jamie Walterscame in with the highest score whenJamie openly admits that she has no ideawho Lucas was – or why she shouldcare.

Hobbs Tavern put on a great spreadfor us with a “limited” menu – but some-thing for everyone.

Again, many thanks to Bob & Kim. We are looking forward to manyfuture events organized by thisenergetic subset of BCNH.That’s all for now, Bob M

Car of the MonthContinued from page 2

and tonneau. This work brought the Bback to its original state with a totalproject cost of $8,100 plus the purchaseprice of $2,500, bringing the total invest-ment to $10,600. I drove the car for acouple of years and eventually turned thecar over to Sam at “Brit Bits” to sell. The car sold rather quickly and, with themoney in hand, the TF could receive afull restoration.

I was beginning to understand our rolewith these “little British cars” not only asan owner/driver, but a caretaker of apart of history. My search began to findan MGB that had some historical value,in good condition, and could be drivendaily in warm weather. The goal was tofind an early pull handle that was manu-factured 1962-63, that required littlework to be a good driver. While usingand enjoying the car, we would developa plan to continue to make improvementsaimed at enhancing the car’s longevity. The search was rather difficult as manyof the prospective cars needed lots ofwork and consequently a huge dollar in-vestment to bring them to that state.

Two years went by and finally a car withgood credentials appeared on theHemmings website. The advertiser wasa fellow named Chas from Cincinnatiwho had owned the car for 18 years andwas selling it to make room in his ga-rage. He had what he called a small col-lection: another MGB, a 120 Jag road-

ster, a 140 Jag drop-head, and a Mor-gan. As we corresponded back andforth, I got the impression he was hon-est and straight forward in his descrip-tion of the 62 MGB he referred to as#951. He purchased the car from theformer owner/restorer Tim in San Diegowho built the car to Chas’s specifications. The car was iris blue, navy interior andcarpeting, all gages are Jaeger. Chas andI came to a price agreement and the carwas shipped to Hampton. A gentlemannamed “two lane” Larry was the deliv-ery person. My hope was that he wouldstay in one lane as he drove from Ohioto New Hampshire.

My research continued as I finally in-vested $40 for the Heritage Trust Cer-tificate that would tell me how the carwas equipped when completed. The car/chassis, engine and body numbersmatched as well as the exterior color. Theinterior colors were not correct for seats, trim and carpets which were blue andneeded to be the original black. The con-vertible top, that had never been installed, was a navy blue which was correct forthe car. The only missing item were ablack tonneau cover and an ashtray. Thecar was assembled in late August, earlySeptember 1962 and shipped to Cali-fornia in November 1962. To date, myinquires have found eight cars with car/chassis numbers lower than 951 andgreater than 101, the first manufacturedMGB LHD was to stay in the UK.

Over the next several months I becamean upholsterer and brought the car backto its original state. In 2012, it was cho-sen to be the Marque in the SOD andhas placed in a few shows. The intentionhere is still to enjoy the car, maintain itscondition, and make improvements thatkeep the car as near to original as pos-sible.

The future for 951 over the next fewyears will be a new paint job, wiring har-ness and dash.
