Car of the Month The Nine Lives of Maggiethe MGA (and Her Owner)

continued on page 9

Maggie and I go a long way back, 54years to be exact. It has not always beena smooth relationship, but then I guessno relationships that last that long everare. She has been treated nobly butsometimes shabbily. There have beenperiods of prominence, but also timesof neglect. There have been times whenwe almost split up permanently. Yetsomehow, with Maggie into her ninth life,we are still together and entering our oldage very much in sync with each other. This is our story.

Pride 1964-68

I first got the car bug when I was 13and someone gave me a 1928 Chevroletthat had been in a barn for decades. Igot it running, but had to give it up whenwe moved to a new place with no space.

My next endeavor, at age 15, was a1940 Ford 5-window coupe that Ibought for $105 from a classmate. Evenback in 1956 you didn’t get much for$105, so it was in need of a body-offrestoration. In the end, it had a modified1949 Cadillac engine, a LaSalle 3-speedgearbox, and a bunch of Mercury run-ning bits. By the time I sold it in 1959 itstill needed paint and upholstery, but ranlike crazy between replacing rear axlekeys.

When college came, I had gotten thesports car bug, and the introduction of

the E-Type really got me going, though Iwasn’t to have one until about 40 yearslater. I tried to convince my father that aBugeye Sprite was a practical commut-ing car, but that of course went nowhere. So I settled on using family cars until mynew wife and I bought a practical 1958Ford in 1962 and I put dreams of asports car to bed, or so I thought.

In 1964 I was working part-time for alarge chemical plant in Baltimore andsettled down to concentrating on schooland the practicalities of the daily life of amarried student, but then fate interfered. When I went to work one day there wasan absolutely beautiful red MGA with aFor Sale sign on it in the parking lot. Cer-tainly this was a sign – I should have thatcar!

So I made inquiries and found that it be-longed to a co-worker who had boughtit new as his present to himself on gradu-ating from college and getting his prom-ising first job. The car was 15 monthsold with about 12,000 miles on theodometer. Of course the first questionto be asked was why was it for sale? The owner was a bit coy about it, butsome checking around produced the real

reason. It seems he had also rewardedhimself with some tumbles in the haywith one of the company secretaries, andthe impending increase in passenger re-quirements meant the car had to go.

So in March of 1964 I managed to buythe MGA (later to be named Maggie bymy second and current wife, Prebble)for $1600 with payments of a whop-ping $56 per month. The original ownerwas so distraught over parting with thecar that he had his mother close the deal.

I was in heaven. It was a great little carand I was smitten. My wife also likedthe car, but less so when the Prince ofDarkness seemed to always frown onher and not me, particularly with respectto the Lucas fuel pump.

I remember driving to her mother’shouse to show off our new toy on a chillyrainy evening in March. My mother-in-law approached this tiny car with sometrepidation, advanced to the passengerdoor and stood there hesitantly and said,“Where are the door handles?” So Ishowed her how to slide open the sidecurtain and pull the cord. The next ques-tion was “How do you lock it?” “Youcan’t,” I replied. I was not quite pre-pared for what came next “What goodis a car if you can’t lock it?” she de-manded. That pretty much summed upthe relationship between my thenmother-in-law and Maggie.

For the next four years Maggie was ouronly car. It was used for everything, inall kinds of weather. We adapted todrafty winters, leaky rain storms, andwisps of snow on the seats on snowymornings. Maggie hauled our firstdaughter, baby cribs, baby furniture, youname it, she did it. She also went rally-ing, did some autocrossing, traveled allover the central east coast, and providedthe opportunity to get into all kinds offun car stuff.

Prime Minister ’sMissive

For the love of all that is holy will youjust stop it with this weather! I managedto pick up the MGB from storage in ashort window when it wasn’t freezing, snowing or raining, although it certainlywasn’t MG driving weather. As I writethis it is snowing and with freezing rainand sleet predicted for tomorrow withrain the day after, I’ll then have one clearand cold day to pick up the TD beforemore freezing rain comes in! I have alist of things I want to do to both MGs;LED lights, new flashing units, upgrad-ing both cars’ horns along with springtune-up and wash and wax but the darngarage is too cold to work in! Do weeven have a spring anymore?

Wet and cold weather notwithstanding, the driving season is in full swing. By thetime you read this we will have alreadydriven to Zorvino Vineyards andWoodman’s in Essex, MA, motoredfrom Hampstead, NH, to Exeter, NH,for lunch and checked our cars over atBrit Bits Lift Day. A good start…buthold onto your hats for May and June!

Right out of the gate, we have not one,but two Tech Sessions on May 5th! AtHistoric Motor Sports in Candia we willhave the manager for Spectro Oils give

us a run-down on all things oil and lubri-cants. The Monadnock Council will behosting a tech session 75 miles west inKeene, NH, at Sports Car Services.Owner Gary Gammons will brief us ongetting the cars ready for the season andprovide a lift to demonstrate various top-ics. I’m not sure you can go wrong witheither…pick the one closest to you!

No rest for the wicked. The next dayfinds us motoring to a place where thewicked are not welcome, The NotreDame Spiritual Center in Alfred, ME!After a nice brunch at the Oak StreetBistro, we will motor up the hill to haveour cars blessed against the demons ofLucas for the 2018 driving season. NowI’m just sayin’ last year we had the MGBand MG TD blessed and both led theNew England British Reliability Runwhere they completed the 500 milecourse unscathed along with 22 follow-ing British cars that completed the coursewithout a major breakdown. Call me silly, but I’m not messing with success. I’ll bethere!

If you don’t like rallies, race tracks andbreweries, you better stay home May12th, because that is where the Hobbsrally is headed! We’ll meet at the CircleK/Irving Station just off of I-93 exit 24in Ashland for a 10:00 am drivers’ meet-ing. After a 10:30 am start we’ll travel

40 miles from Ashland to the BearcampValley, ending at Hobbs Tavern AFTERa few escorted laps around ClubMotorsports! Along the way there willbe questions to answer from signs andobjects along the route. First, secondand third place prizes will be awardedbased on points accrued during the rally.

May 20th brings us a new event whichbegan its life as a winter project, a tourof some of the lesser known antiqueshops around the area. When an-nounced, the snowbirds from Floridapointed out that they wouldn’t be ableto take the tour, so then it became aspring event, allowing the folks with thetans who enjoyed the Florida weatherwhile we shoveled and froze to comealong!!!

Rest up all of you, because June is burst-ing all over! I invite you to peruse theBCNH calendar for June; we are busyevery weekend! June 2nd the Monad-nock Council will have a drive to Frye’sMeasure Mill in Wilton, NH, for a tourand picnic, followed by the British bythe Sea Show outside New London,CT, on the 3rd. The 8th-10th is the Brit-ish Motorcar festival in Bristol, RI, ourown Seacoast Council seashore drive onthe 18th, of course, the annual Queen’sBirthday party in Deerfield on the 23rd,

First Morgan Aero 8 GTrolls off the line

https://www.motorauthority.com/news/1116100_first-morgan-aero-8-gt-rolls-off-the-line#image=100648742

The “Nautical but Nice” drive began atnoon from Historic Motor Sports inCandia with six cars and about a dozenhearty souls. As it turned out, the daydeveloped so wonderfully that hearty

was not actually needed for most par-ticipants. Notable exceptions, the Bobs;Bob Dougherty in his, TD sans win-dows, was as snug as a bug without therug. Bob Mitchell was the most disad-vantaged with neither roof nor Joyce tocombat temps of a spring that just hasn’tsprung.

As it was the first drive of the season, the first drive for some of our newermembers and the first drive this authorhad organized, I assembled the faithfulfor some basic tips and instructions andwe were off. Our first stop was the

Zorvino Vineyard in Sandown, NH. Af-ter a 30-minute meander over the kindof roads we love we arrived at the Vine-yard. To my great pleasure, we werejoined by three additional cars and theirowners. We were warmly greeted byRob Ozoonian who, after some welcom-ing words, handed the group over to

Laura who ran a wine tasting of whichmost to of the group partook.

I expect the vineyard was very happyto have us as during the time we werethere I think we conservatively doubledtheir attendance and their business asmany items were purchased. This wasreported to me by my wife, Audrey. It isworth mentioning that she was critical to

whatever our “team of two” contributed

to the success of the day.

As we departed Zorvino we saidgoodbye to a few of the group that, bythe way, had swelled to 10 cars andabout 18 members. Evidence that it isnot necessary to commit to the entiretyof a drive to enjoy the company of the

When our second daughter was on theway I had finally finished school and hadsome money, so we broke down andbought another car and Maggie enteredher second life.

Abuse 1968-71

Early in 1968 we moved to New Jerseyand Maggie took a back seat to the newcar and the new passenger requirements. She was driven in all kinds of weatherand by multiple people.

In late 1968 our family moved to Eu-rope on a business assignment. I leftMaggie in the care of one of my bach-elor friends, who continued to use herhard. After a six-week return to the US,we went to Spain for a year, and Maggiewas again left behind in the care of someof my co-workers. After again returningto the US in mid-1970, Maggie was mycommuter car, during which time she sus-tained considerable front-end damage inan ice storm (she had already had onepoorly repaired front-end collision yearsbefore). By this time Maggie had about80,000 miles on the clock and waspretty long-in-the-tooth.

Then in 1971 my company again sentme on another temporary assignment, this time to Houston, Texas, for whatwas to be 12 months. Thus Maggie be-gan her third life.

Abandonment 1971-74

It made no sense to take Maggie toHouston. She was ratty, had no air-con-ditioning, and was prone to overheatingeven on the east coast. And besides, there were now five Eklofs to haularound. So Maggie was left behind onan open parking lot in northern New Jer-sey. For a while, some of my co-work-ers would drive her occasionally, but asthey too were sent off to the hinterlandsby the company, even that attention dis-appeared.

As for me, the 12 months came and went, and then a nine-month stay in Australia, and it became clear that I was not re-turning to New Jersey any time soon.Maggie sat forlornly on that New Jerseyparking lot, rusting away on four flat tires.

Eventually, the company demanded thatI do something about Maggie. By thattime we had a new house, two cars, andlots of family activities. Maggie no longerfit our lifestyle and was expendable. Asluck would have it, at about the sametime I got a call from a co-worker sayinghe knew of someone who was interestedin Maggie. We cut a deal. If the inter-ested party was willing to haul her away,I would send the title; divorce was immi-nent – I even got the title from the safedeposit box. But it was not to be. Thusbegan Maggie’s fourth life.

Resurrection 1974-1979

When it came time to lick the stamp onthe envelope, I couldn’t do it. A flood ofnostalgia for Maggie clouded my vision.I looked into acquiring another MGA,but it just wasn’t right – they were notMY MG. So in a fit of insanity, I renteda tow bar, threw it in the back of thefamily Chevy, and headed for New Jer-sey.

On arrival, I got one of the shocks of mylife. It was hard to believe just how badthings were. The rockers were gone, much of the car was rusty, and the up-

holstery in tatters, the grill missing, thechrome flaking off, and all the tires wereflat. Also, the brakes were completelylocked up. The fronts, being discs, wereeasy, but freeing the drum brakes andpulling off and taking all four tires to getthem inflated took all day. I reallydoubted my decision of insisting on MYMG, but I was committed.

I think it was about mid-1974 when wegot back to Houston and rolled Maggieinto her new home. She was not toemerge for nearly five years.

Things were bad. Bottoms of front andrear fenders were rusted out, A pillarsgone, B pillars gone, inner and outerrockers gone, floorboards and mount-ing channels gone, frame full of rustholes, battery boxes gone, front cowlsection beyond repair due to an acci-dent in the early sixties. The list went onand on.

It was either junk it or restore it, but af-ter taking the trouble to retrieve it andflatbed tow it for 1600 miles, logic didn’tfactor into the decision and the emotionalchoice was obvious. So I started. It wasstripped to the bare frame, which wasrepaired and galvanized (no more rustthere), body parts procured or repaired, and every mechanical bit rebuilt. Manyof you know the drill. Once the mainbody had been completely redone, it wasoff to the sand blasters for the first stepto a new paint job.

Then disaster struck. The company Ichose to do the sand blasting turned outto have no experience with car restora-tion. During the blasting they severelyoverheated the panels, so when I gotMaggie’s bits back, just about every flatpanel was badly warped, including thecowl, scuttle, and the sides of the frontfenders. I was crushed. After a coupleof years of hard work I had a mess onmy hands. I was so discouraged I let itsit untouched for about a year.

Eventually I got back to it, and we didthe best we could with the body, gave ita stunning hand-rubbed lacquer paintjob, redid the complete interior with afresh hide from Bridge of Weir Leatherin Scotland, and got it all back together,so Maggie entered her fifth life.

Winning 1979-83

During the restoration I had joined theHouston MG Car Club (eventually serv-ing as President) and when Maggie’sresurrection was finally completed shewon numerous Best in Show trophies, participated in club rallies and drives, andwas used occasionally for long-distanceclub tours. But mileage was limited, if youhave ever been to Houston in the sum-mer, you will know why.

I dropped out of the MG club for a va-riety of reasons, and that, combined withchanges in my personal life, including anew wife (who actually named Maggie),a new house, and new job, meantMaggie was about to enter into her sixthlife

Rare Usage 1983-91

I continued to drive Maggie occasion-ally, but as they say, life got in the way.My new job meant heavy travel and timecommitments, and I had a growing in-terest in motorcycles and motorcycleenduro racing. Then trouble, and Ibought a “project” house with limitedgarage space, and we got a boat. Com-bining all these things, Maggie faded intothe background of our lives and largelylanguished in a friend’s spare garagespace, in 1987, relocation from Hous-ton to Boston, another project house, more motorcycles, and an even moredemanding job led to a continuation ofMaggie’s low-priority use. Total mileagesince restoration was a paltry 8,000, andeven that low rate of use went down andMaggie ultimately entered her seventhlife.

Neglect 1992-2016

Sometime in 1992 I drove Maggie forsome unrecalled reason, arrived homeand put her in the garage. She was to situntouched in a corner for the next 24years. She was moved once, when webought a new house, but it was just anexchange of one neglected corner foranother. In addition to still traveling in ademanding job, still riding motorcycles(I had as many as six bikes at one point),I also finally got the E-Type I lusted forin 1961 – in fact two E-Types – and acouple of other Jaguars. Also member-ship and eventual Presidency in the Jag-uar Association of New England wereother diversions. No time for poor oldMaggie and then came Maggie’s eighthlife.

The Second Coming 2016-17

For several reasons, we decided in 2016to sell our E-Type (though we still havetwo other Jaguars), but I couldn’t dowithout an old British sports car andthere she was, still waiting patiently forme to again notice her.

I rolled her out of her corner and intomy shop and got to work. She was dirty, but still in amazingly good condition con-sidering her years of neglect. Of courseall the usual attention was required, newhoses, belts, brakes, clutch hydraulics,a carb overhaul, fuel system cleanout,

Submitted By: Dennis Eklof

etc. Also replaced some of the chromeand added a set of minilite’s, but most ofthe cosmetics look remarkably good, given that the restoration is almost 40years old. Sure, the paint job has somedefinite patina, and there are some cracksin the epoxy that was used to repair thewarped panels, but she still looks goodto me. It’s great to have her back andthus Maggie enters her ninth life.

Touring and Shows 2017-??

In 2017 we entered Maggie in British CarDay at Larz Anderson Auto Museum, aBay State MGA Club tour, the BritishCars of New Hampshire British CarReliability Run, and drove her to BritishInvasion in Stowe, Vermont. We are alsonow just driving her for fun and day-to-day errands when the weather is good. Iguess we put at least 1500 miles on herin 2017, and she is performing beauti-fully. I can’t believe I neglected her forso long. When I get into the driver’s seatI can’t say I feel 22 again, but I can atleast remember back that far. Maggie andI have been together for a very long time.I expect I will give out before she does.

With sixteen members, including one newmember in attendance at the HomesteadRestaurant in Bristol the knock off ham-mer came down at 7:03pm. Minister Karlmentioned that this was the NorthernCouncils third year this past March andhe still gets a little anxious getting up andtalking in front of a crowd. But when youlook around the table and see so manynew and good friends it all melts awayand the fun begins. Karl apologized forputting away the snow shovels thinkingthis is “Spring” only to have severalsnowier, icy days in April... we callUNCLE!

Karl also mentioned a new business cardbeing added to the fold, Tom’s Tops N’Trim Auto upholsterer in Laconia, NewHampshire, Addr ess: 54 Bay St,Laconia, NH 03246 Phone: (603) 528-4275. Several members have usedTom’s services and highly recommendedthis shop.

Karl also shared a short story regardinga fellow worker who wanted to improvehis gas mileage in his F150 truck (park-ing it would be a good start). The truckowner ended up switching over to Syn-thetic from Mineral natural aromatics oilwhich caused all of his seals to shrinkand leak. The poor guy had to go backto the Mineral based, the seals swelledup and his gas mileage went back down.

This story was a great Segway into theupcoming Tech session being held atHMS on Saturday, May 5th. Intercon-tinental Lubricants Corp, John Dunne, their Brand Manager for Spectro Oilshas agreed to be our Presenter for theSpring Tech Session. Bob M. sharedsome of the tech talk’s high points andKim Dougherty told him not to give up a“spoiler alert” as many people aroundthe table have already planned to attend.Bob M. brought along his basket of

goodies containing the very beautifullydone club car badges. They sell for $20each and Bob has both types ofmountings depending on your needs.

Bob also mentioned some of the firstupcoming events of the calendar and weencourage everyone to peruse the cal-endar and start planning your BCNHtrips. Hats off to Sue MacDuff, our cal-endar girl for all the fantastic work shedoes!

We then started our customary aroundthe table introductions and quick updateson what everyone is working on. Wealso welcomed a new member from theMeredith area, Andrew McCue whodrove over in his white TVR 280I, healso owns a couple of Alfa Romeo’s.Several folks from the restaurant wentout to the parking lot for a look as this isnot a car you get to see on a daily basis.Everyone seems to be working on onecar or another getting ready for dust off, which we hope is right around the cor-ner.

Paul Ardito is working on his Jag, andBob Doc has replaced all the lights inthe MGB with LED which makes things4-5X brighter. The LED’s require posi-tive ground or the car needs to be po-larized. Ask Bob the next time you seehim about his new horns. Russ (drivingMs. Shirley) and Shirley Splaine, oursnow birds have arrived home safely fromFl. They are planning to take Maggie tothe British by the Sea coming up on June3rd. Reservations are needed for thisevent to stay over and Bob M. en-courages you to get your reserva-tions in now.

Helen Nickel accompanied DonMargeson whose Healy is in the shopfor some body work and hopes to beback on the road very soon. LarryRowe is seeing light at the end of thislong restoration tunnel and hopes to havethe Jag done by the end of May! It was

the longest continually operating boatshop in the country. This information andmore was imparted to us by the avuncu-

lar Dennis as he walked us around theshop and soaked in the history of thisamazing trade. As we prepared to de-part Rosamond was treated to a bit ofhistory lesson herself as she followed usout to examine our” four-wheeled” crafts. She was most taken by Bob M’s TR-2000 and was allowed to step in to therumble seat area to relive some child-hood memories.

As we readied to continue our south-easterly trek in to Massachusetts for anearly dinner we bid goodbye to a fewmore members as we proceeded to hugthe coast on our way to Woodman’s inEssex. This was another pleasant drivewhich made up the final leg of our jour-ney together. At this point we were com-prised of four cars and seven membersbut resulted in no shortage of fun as wepartook of the best of what both sea andland had to offer at the “in-the-rough”style dining that is a signature ofWoodman’s and has proven to work sowell for us when it is available.

After a satisfying dinner and some greatcompany, we headed our separate ways

Bob M. is still working on the overdrivein the Riley, with a bit more CAD workto be done. That’s cardboard aideddesign for those old school mechanics!Bob and Di Stanley brought us up to dateon the fantastic progress being made forthe upcoming Show of Dreams. MikeSweet will be doing some British signsto be placed on the field at SOD.

Di gave us several white T’s from the2017 BCNH show which has the re-ally nice graphics, including an MGon the front. If anyone is interestedwe have an assortment of sizes fromsmall to XL for only $10.00. Pleasecontact Kellie [email protected].

Bob and Di are getting the GT6 readyfor The Boston Cup 2018, September23, 2018, from 9:00 am-2:00 pm, theBoston Common, the Parkman Band-stand. This is a by invitation only eventwhich features a unique field of 100 ve-hicles representing well over $100 mil-lion in value.

Kellie then reviewed some of the manyupcoming events on the calendar andBob Doc shared a handout of informa-tion regarding the Hobbs Brewery Rallywhich is on Saturday May 12th. Thisreally fun rally will include the infamousQ & A section of the drive and end up atthe Hobbs Tavern & Brewing Co. forlunch, but we get desert first which willbe some escorted laps around ClubMotorsports track!! Again this eventwill need a head count to Bob for thetrack runs and Hobbs Brewery.

Kim won the 50/50 raffle and graciouslydonated all the funds to the air condi-tioned porta potty fund for SOD. Thankyou Kim! Kim also shared an idea forclub members to each have a name tagmade up and as she noted this should bean idea to present to the BCNH boardfor consideration.

Doc brought us up to speed on the Re-liability run which are 25 cars and 600miles in 3 days to benefit the BostonChildren’s hospital, the theme this yearis Lobster and Lighthouses you can’t gowrong with that combination. The dateon the calendar for the Reliability run isSeptember 7-9th.

Winding down we had a few commentsworth sharing; Karl talked about springcleaning and had a great suggestion forfolks to put together a list of car partsthey would be interested in swappingwithin the club. We can put items in thenewsletter and discuss at the May meet-ing to see you who has what for swap-ping.

The last item on the agenda was our everevolving meeting place. The Homesteadwas happy to host our meeting and weare in talks with the owner to continuethis arrangement. The down side is theyare going to beginning some great bigrenovations on the Homestead which willtake approximately two months. Whilewe are working directly with one of the

owner’s, Mark we are also checkingback in with the Common Man inAshland as a backup meeting venue. Sostay tuned and as always, Karl and I willdo our best to keep all the folks “in theknow” for upcoming meetings, we’ve gotyour numbers.

Enjoy the Sunshine when you can andget ready for a top down, wind in yourhair, great driving season!
