How to ship a car to the UK

by Harry Parkinson

After several years of various starts andstops, my Jaguar MK IV DropheadCoupe restoration project was down to avery slow pace. I’d finished most of themechanical work with the chassis, motor, transmission, suspension and brakes com-pleted. The body and fender work wasalso done, but needed final fitting andpainting. I had most of the parts, new orreconditioned, ready to go. It was downto the putting the body, trim and interiorback together. My son volunteered someof his time to help, but with his family andbusiness taking it’s fair share, the workpace was still slow.

I started to look for some professionalhelp. Several shops were willing to takeon finishing the car, but I wanted the carto be ready for the summer of 2008 forseveral reasons……I wanted to be in theJANE (Jaguar Ass’n of New England)2008 Concours, to lead my 50th class re-union parade in my car, and to attend theBritish Invasion at Stow, VT. My niece isalso getting married next summer and sheis looking forward to having it as the bridalcar.

I had to have the car for the 2008 sum-mer season!

A very good shop in the US that had beenused by other JANE members gave mea good estimate to complete the work, but

couldn’t guarantee to finish for May/June2008. Plus, he had no experience withMK IV Jaguars even though he does greatwork.

Fast forward to March of 2007, the timeof the semi-annual Jaguar autojumble(flea market) at Coventry in the UK. In-cluded was a visit to Davenport Cars, theworld’s best restorer of SS1, SS2, SS, andMKIV cars. After visiting his shop, it waslooking more like a David Davenportcompletion of my restoration was a realpossibility. I asked him for a “ballpark”estimate for the project.

By late summer, I decided to have Dav-enport Cars complete my MK IV. Onebig item was shipping the car and parts tothe UK from Nashua, NH.

I got estimates from several shippers. Iwas shocked at the range of prices, whichvaried from $3250 to $10,500. A coupleof estimates were close to each other, oneat $5175 and one at $5600. My son wasalso in the export/import ocean freightbusiness for several years and he helpedme a lot. There was a big difference inthe services provided. I wanted door todoor shipment from my Nashua home toTetworth in the UK via one twenty footcontainer. The services quoted were alldoor to door, but there was a big differ-ence in the services provided. One quotedsending a crew up from Elizabethport, NJto put the car in a container and pack andsecure the boxes. I would also have topay for tolls and “on road” expenses.Another company would send a car trans-port van from Intercity Lines from myhouse in Nashua. The low bidder wouldallow me to transport the car and theboxes to East Boston to a warehousewhere they would pack it in the container. The container would be shipped toElizabethport for customs inspection and

then loaded on a ship for the UK. Theshipping schedule is weekly sailing toFelixstowe on the east coast of England,100 miles northeast of London. My ship-ment was classified as a terminal to door.In England, the container would be deliv-ered to Davenport Cars for unloading ofthe car and parts. Total quoted price forthe shipment, including insurance, was$3,050.

The MK IV was transported to the ware-house via a local flatbed truck. My sonand I packed the boxes ourselves. Thoseand other loose parts such as the doorsand hood (bonnet) were taken there inmy son’s pickup truck. The flatbed com-pany quoted $200.00 to get the car to theEast Boston warehouse from Nashua,NH.

The insurance for the shipment that wasincluded in the quoted shipper’s price onlycovered total loss (they’re all the same). If the container gets lost, falls overboard, gets destroyed or the ship sinks, you getpayment. Anything in between, there isno loss coverage. For $640, I picked up asupplemental policy from Hagerty Insur-ance to cover partial loss or damage thatcovered up to $125,000 in losses. Thisinsurance coverage would be the samewith any shipper, but was less expensiveas some shippers who quoted a percentof total value, some as high as 2 percent(the shippers make big money on addedinsurance)

The flatbed arrived to pick up the car righton schedule and was promptly loaded forthe short trip to East Boston. We actedas a pathfinder for the flatbed with thepickup truck, the back full of boxes and

BCNH Newsletter:US Mail or E-mail?

At one of the monthly meetings in the fallof 2007, one of the items that was dis-cussed was the desire by some membersto receive the newsletter via E-mail in-stead of US Mail. When I sent out therenewal forms and questionnaires for2008, there was a question on it concern-ing which method the individual memberwould prefer in the future. We will sendit via the individual member’s preference. Thus far, 37 members have elected toreceive the newsletter via E-mail and 71via US Mail. Some members did not in-clude the form with their dues or did notcheck a preference. If you’re one ofthose members, please E-mail me at80mgbman@ Comcast.net or call me at603-424-7835 so I can update the mem-bership list with your preference.

March brings with it the promise of springand we all know what that means. Ea-gerly anticipated, it marks yet anotherbeginning, another new season of tinker-ing with and tooling around in our belovedLBCs. This year it also marks a newbeginning for me, that of a club director. So I thought I would take a brief momentto thank everyone who voted for me andto give you all an insight into some of thechanges I would like to work on for theclub.

For one thing, Wade and I will both bewriting articles as directors. I would liketo focus more on both the macro as wellas the micro issues which all clubs likeours face. On the macro side, I have beencaught up for some time now in wonder-ing what the future holds in store for ourhobby. When you attend a club meeting,go to one of our car shows, participate ina tour and so on, it doesn’t take a verykeen eye to see that there are a lot ofgrey beards around and not too many“youngsters”. What does that bode forthe future of LBCs? Most kids today haveno clue what our cars even are. In fu-ture newsletters, I would like to delve intothis issue and, to that end, I invite any andall comments, suggestions for articles andwhatever else moves you to write.

On the micro side, I’d like to see moreinformational programs for our members.I think hands-on clinics are invaluable tothose of us who, like me, weren’t gifted

with a high mechanical skill level. I alsowould like to work on share-ware typeprojects for the club. Do you have anybooks or other written material that youmight like to share with your fellow clubmembers? How about those tapes and/CDs that you watched when you werespiffing up your wheels? Are you plan-ning on watching them again or would youlike to make them available to other mem-bers? Need a special tool like a rotis-serie? Maybe the club has someone withone.

These are the types of issues that inter-est me and that I would like to pursue onbehalf of all of us. So please, feel free tocontact me with your thoughts, commentsand/or suggestions on ways we can im-prove the club or on the types of articlesyou would like to see in your newsletter.

And thanks again,

And, of course, the Show of Dreams Carshow. We met with the organizers of NickField in Wolfboro. This is an athletic fieldabout 1.5 miles outside of town on Route28 - past the boat museum. Severalmembers of the location committee vis-ited the board of directors of Nick field.Yours truly being one of the mob. It lookslike a good spot for the show. They runtrolleys to downtown and back. Theywould provide food from their refreshmentstand and wanted to know if we wouldallow beer! Silly wabbitt. We waited aleast a nanosecond before replying. Weasked that they consider beer other thanBudweiser and that maybe they could addbangers and mash to the menu. Theywanted to know what we did about theoil leaks. We very proudly told them it wasone of the awards. Largest oil leak winsbig!! Using the field will cost us sincethey are also a non profit and need fundsto care for the field. Other spots are alsobeing considered. The Votech school inNashua (free), Canobie Lake Park, theAmherst flea market field etc. We’vealso been offered a field by one of ourmembers. If you have a suggestionplease let us know since we need to make

a decision soon.

Other new business:Wade brought up the by-laws again – wesort of voted on them and adopted thembut we need to vote on them and discussthem again in March for some reason. Ifyou were not in attendance and would likea copy please contact Wade.

There was also a question raised aboutour tax status. No one knew theanswer.. Do we need to register as a nonprofit with the state? (Editor’s note: Thetreasurer is handling this)

We also discussed moving the meetingfrom the Weathervane. We will be check-ing with T-Bones in Bedford and if youhave any other suggestions please let usknow. We would like a spot with ampleparking, adult beverages, a room wherewe can hold a meeting and can accom-modate up to 50-60 people.

Meeting was adjourned at 8:15.

The Breakdown Laneby Rod Folia

On Rt.95 in Florida, on our way to Sebringto race the National, and towing our 24'trailer with our 30' motor-home, we cameupon another racer who was brokendown. He had a flat tire, so we assumedthat he was without a jack or had another, similar dumb problem. We stopped to lenda hand only to find out that he was with-out a spare tire... now THAT was a dumbproblem; he had forgotten tocheck that essential item be-fore leaving.

Offering assistance to a fel-low racer, I said, “hop on inand we’ll find a local shop thatmight be able to help”. At thenext exit we found an oldQuonset hut garage but it wason the opposite side of theroad. As we passed it, mynew found friend said, “Howthe hell do you turn this thingaround on this narrow road”?Sizing up the situation, I said,“don’t do this at home”, as Iswung my rig around fromsidewalk to sidewalk andpulled up in front of the shop.Everyone from the garagewas standing outside, staringin amazement (they don’t getout much). As it turned out, they had a spare rim and or-dered a tire which showed upin short order and soon ournew friend was on his wayagain.

Fast forward…in the last qualifying ses-sion of the day I broke my driveshaft.Looking for a solution to my problem, Ihopped on my bike and found a hotel witha phone book, called a welding shop inSebring and was told that if I got thereASAP they might be able to help. I re-turned to the paddock area and, as I lookedacross the lane, there, to my amazement, was my new friend, the guy who we hadhelped on the road. I told him my situa-tion and he said that the keys were in histruck and to get going.

When I got to the welding shop,I was told that they were clos-ing for the weekend and towait. In 20 minutes, the welderproduced a driveshaft which Ipaid him for and then I returnedto the track. Once back in thepaddock area, I installed the re-placement driveshaft in therace car and was able to go onand compete.

The long and short of it is thatI was able to race both Sebringand Moroso but the vibration Iexperienced from the replace-ment shaft was extreme. WhenI returned home, I brought thedriveshaft to my welding shoponly to find out that what I hadwas an old, used (and bowed)driveshaft from a Chevy pick-up with my two driveshaft endsattached.

As the saying goes, any port ina storm but at least the missionwas accomplished.

Membership at 148As of February 6th, 2008, BCNH had 148members which is down from 184. Thiswas a result of removing those membersfrom the membership list that hadn’t paidtheir dues for 2008 and/or decided not torejoin for this year. While some of youmay think that this is a significant drop, past history has shown that this is the gen-eral trend from year to year.

Based on past experiences, I usually fig-ure that we’re going to lose 25% fromthe end of one year to the start of thenext year.

Percentage wise, we had a 27% loss for2000-2001, 25% for 2001-2002, and 24%for 2002-2003, 22% for 2003-2004, 28%for 2004-2005, 23% for 2005-2006, and31% for 2006-2007, 20% for 2007-2008.

History has shown that we usually pickup thirty new members between Marchthrough December. We usually averagesix new members joining at the Show of

Dreams but this year we had an all timerecord of twenty join at the Show. Also,we generally have a half dozen membersthat thought they had paid their dues andend up sending them in when the seasongets going or they realize that they haven’tbeen getting their Newsletter. If that holdstrue, we’ll be back at 184 by the end ofthis year.

DEFENDERSOF THE FAITH

by: Mike Sweet

A long time ago, when I was a wee lad ofthirteen, I had a chance encounter withtwo guys out for a drive in a Morgan +4.I had been a car enthusiast from earlyon, and knew about Morgans and theirhistory from the magazine “Car Classics”and the 27 volume encyclopedia set “TheWorld of Automobiles”. These items Ipurchased with my paper route money, and they are still with me to this day. Justin case I forget what a Morgan is...

For me, it was the first time I had everseen a real Morgan, and I was floored. Iran up to it, and started asking questions. All were answered with equal enthusi-asm. One of the gentlemen told my Dadthat he was impressed by my knowledgeof his car and, if they hadn’t been on atight schedule, they would have loved togive me a ride around the block. For therecord, I didn’t ask.

That was in 1976, but the point is, I re-member it like it was yesterday. Silly thing, perhaps, but that day was a turning pointfor me. Seeing that beautiful, dark blue+4 with red leather and a set of Weberswas only part of it. It was the way I wastreated that I recall mostly, and it is thestandard I set when this Club was cre-ated.

We are defenders of the faith, and am-bassadors of this hobby of ours, Britishcars. This past summer, I was reading“Whip’s Wheels”, a hot rod paper distrib-uted free in most places. One of the col-umnists had gone to a “British Marque”

show (I took this to mean a single makecar show) and did not feel welcome. Hiscar was less than perfect, apparently, andmembers of that group decided theyshould enlighten him with what was“right” and how “wrong” his car was. Didthey bother to ask if he was having funwith it?

Not knowing what club it was, but beingin this one, I cringed. Bless the anoraks, for without them we would not see themuseum quality examples of mass pro-duction automobiles that were built by thehundreds of thousands. My experiencehas been that most of the shiny, “right”cars don’t run or drive well because it’sthe badges and picnic hampers on the bootthat win shows, so why spend money onthings you can’t see, like ball joints or thatnasty bottom end knock you hear whenyou start up but that goes away soonenough?

I am proud of British Cars of New Hamp-shire and its membership and know thatthe incident that I have written about couldnot have come from a group like ours.February will mark 17 years, and it hasalways been a fun and enjoyable club forme, every year. We are the best multi-marque club on the East Coast becauseof you.

I know the next bit doesn’t apply to thisclub, but I thought I’d add it. You neverknow where an issue of the Boot, Hoodand Bonnet will end up... mine are, ofcourse, in leather bound cases in a her-metically sealed environment for futurearchivists to ponder and research. Thatis, the boot of my Jaguar.

If you can, give a kid, other than a rela-tive, a ride in your car. If you’re worriedabout being sued, sell the damn thing. Youdon’t deserve it.

Never, ever, tell someone their car is“wrong”. They probably know it, anddon’t care anyway. On the other hand, you may learn some excellent phrases andwords from the UK like “bugger off” and“anorak”

Use your experience wisely, grasshopper.Guide the wayward and lost towards thepath of peaceful and meaningful motor-

ing by lending your reference books, re-counting your times of leather and woodinduced intoxication, and the euphoria thatenveloped you as you realized your SU’swere in perfect synchronization.

Drive your car, and encourage others todo the same. Even in the rain. That’s whythey have tops that go up, and wipers forthe windscreen. Worried it might get dirty? What about the car you’re driving thiswinter? It probably cost more new thanthe classic in the garage is worth. Save itnow so you don’t have to restore it later!

Keep things in perspective. We drivemass produced automobiles, old or not.In today’s world, everything is a collect-able, even Ford Pintos. We don’t have acorner on the market if Hemmings is any-thing to go by. By the way, people willalways think a 20 year old Bentley isworth more than a 40 year old AustinHealey, no matter what the price guidessay.

Long may we reign!

loose parts. After unloading at HorizonAir warehouse, we went to the shipper’soffice, DSV Air & Sea, to complete thepaper work. The documents required toship a car to the UK are as follows:

1. Bill of Lading

2. Shipper’s Letter of Instruction (“shipto”, shipper, freight forwarder, “shipfrom”)

3. Original car title which must match theVehicle Identification Number

4. Inventory of shipment, in my case, onecar, nineteen boxes and 15 banded looseparts. This is called the commercial in-voice in the trade.

5. Owner’s passport and Social Securitycard. They must be originals, not copies

The shipper was paid the exact amountquoted by bank check. There were no“additional” charges. Incidentally, thereare no export duties or import charges for

an outbound shipment to the UK.

The container was packed at Horizon Air,shipped to Elizabethport via truck andloaded on a ship after a one week delaybecause of customs scheduling. Aftertwelve days at sea, the ship arrived atFelixstowe, UK. It was unloaded anddelivered to Davenport Cars a few dayslater. The car and parts survived the tripwithout damage and the inventorymatched my inventory exactly.

Just a few rules of thumb for one con-templating a car shipment:

1. Get several quotes! Understand thedetails of the quote. Is it true door to dooror does it require you to get the goods tothe dock (port to port, door to port, etc.)?

2. Understand the insurance coverageand the rates.

3. Get the documents needed for exportto the country involved.

4. Make sure all the documents agree(VIN versus cat title, etc.)

6. Pack your own goods and deliver themto the shipper’s warehouse.

Good luck with your shipment. It’s nothard to get that car overseas or back asan import.
