EXCERPTYou are a man of extreme passion, a hungry man not quite sure where his appetite lies, a deeply frustrated man striving to protect his individuality against a backdrop of rigid conformity. You exist in a half-world suspended between two superstructures , one self-expression and the other self-destruction. You are strong, but there is a flew in your strength, and unless you learn to control it the flaw will prove stronger than your strength and defeat you. The flaw? Explosive emotional reaction out of all proportion to the occasion. Why? Why this unreasonable anger at the sight of others who are happy or content, this growing contempt for people and the desire to hurt them? All right, you think theyre fools, you despise them because their morals, their happiness is the source of your frustration and resentment. But these are dreadful enemies you carry within your self-in time destructive as bullets. Mercifully, a bullet kills its victim. This other bacteria, permitted to age, does not kill a man but leaves in its wake the hulk of a creature torn and twisted; there is still fire within his being but it is kept alive by casting upon it faggots of scorn and hate. He may successfully accumulate, but he does not accumulate success, for he is his own enemy and is kept from truly enjoying his achievements . written in a letter from Willie-Jay to Perry on page 43-44I chose this excerpt because it explains what one of the murderers is like on the inside and why he chose to kill a family that he did not even know. It really lets the reader into the characters head even though it was written by someone else who had a friendship with Perry.

SONNETIn the dark of a lonely nightThere was a family of fourWere bound up real tight, shot in the face and live no more. No one could figure out whyOr who would even dareTo torture this family and let them die. The murderers just seemed not to care. How could anyone be so heartless,And their friends will never know why How they could leave a family lifeless,But they will understand it by and by.It took the murderers next to no timeTo commit such a savage crime.

BOOK REPORTIn Cold Blood was written by Truman Capote. It was published by Vintage Books, a division of Random House, Inc., New York in 1965. Truman Capote captures the savage murder of a humble family of four in the small town of Holcomb, Kansas.Capote reconstructs the murder of an unsuspecting family on the night of November 15, 1959. The clutter family, a nice, loving family that consisted of the father, Mr. Clutter, the mother, Bonnie Clutter, (she had been sickly for years), the two eldest children Eveanna and Beverly who no longer lived with their parents for they had grown and gotten married. The two younger children, Nancy and Kenyon, who, along with their parents, where murdered that lonesome night.Mr. Clutter was a hard working man. He had plenty of money but handled business strictly by checks, for he never carried large sums of money with him. He was also in good health for a man of 48 years of age. Mrs. Clutter was a different story. She was a depressed woman who stayed locked away in an upstairs bedroom because she was always so sad. She loved her family with all her heart though.

Nancy Clutter was the busiest (apart from her father) in the house. She made time for everything. The things like house work, sewing, school work, school activities, hanging out with friends, spending time with family, and helping young girls with various things of their own. Kenyon, although both kids were great in school, he didnt have many friends like Nancy. In fact, he only had one. He loved to read and spend most of his time in the basement of the house with his inventions.Their names were Perry Smith and Dick(Richard) Hicklock. They became friends when they were imprisoned in the same place. Dick, the most cunning of the two, came from a kind, loving family. He was smart in high school, made good grades, and played all types of sports. He married twice, divorced twice, but still claimed to be in love with his first wife. Dick lived with his parents and younger brother. His parents were real sweet and kept forgiving him for all the horrible things he did wrong. To Dick, though, it seemed like the world was against him.The other, Perry, was different. He had a hard life. His parents separated. He felt his father did not love him, for they had had a fight and never spoke to one another again. Perry had a weak bladder and was constantly wetting the bed. He was a self educated man with a large vocabulary. Perry was musically talented, too. He knew how to play the harmonica and the guitar the very first time he picked them up. He taught himself to write exactly like a handwriting book he bought for himself. He was a deeply frustrated man whose anger and resentment resulted from others happiness.

It took the investigators a long time before they caught up with the murderers Dick and Perry. At first, neither would talk about the murders. Neither gave in until Dick blamed it all on Perry. Then Perry came out with the whole story.Dick had obtained the entire layout of the land from a previous cell-mate who had once worked for Mr. Clutter and gave him the impression that Mr. Clutter kept a safe in the house, even though he did not. They (Dick and Perry) parked the car under the trees near the house. Then, they went inside through Mr. Clutters office door, for they knew that he never locked the doors to the house. They snooped around for the safe but never found a thing. Both of them decided to look throughout the whole house when Mr. Clutter woke up. Dick got him to show them the rest of the house after he repeatedly said that there was no safe in the house. He took them upstairs and showed them where the childrens rooms were then went to his wifes room and tried to comfort her saying that Dick and Perry did not want to hurt them. Dick and Perry locked the family in the bathroom. They continued to look for the safe but only found between forty to fifty dollars. Then, one by one, Perry tied up the family. They started with Mr. Clutter in the furnace room, then Kenyon in the other part of the basement, Mrs. Clutter in her room, and last Nancy in her room. Dick told Perry that he wanted to rape Nancy but Perry would not stand for it. Perry did not want to kill the family and said so to Dick but then he got angry. So Perry slit Mr. Clutters throat and Dick shot him. Kenyon was shot in the head, then Nancy, and last Mrs. Clutter. When Dick and Perry were finally caught, the two culprits were hung after three years of imprisonment.

In Cold Blood pricks the heart with fear and mourning and excitement as the investigators got closer and closer to catching the murderers. It took great courage and faith for the investigators to keep searching. At first, they did not have anything, but they came a long way. This chilling tale will have you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end. What happened in Holcomb will be one unforgettable night, but one unbelievable story.
