One was a conversation with my son who is in his 50’s, lives alone with two cats in Georgia. I told him that I was working with a congregation which was experiencing serious decline. And if they did not succeed in turning things around eventually the church would die. His response was a question. “Why not let it die?” I looked at him and said “I don’t have an answer.” No one had actually asked me that question before. I slept on it. Next day when he and I talked I said, “I have an answer for you.” What would have been your answer? Since June of last year we have been pursuing an answer to that question. I don’t think I will tell you mine just now. Let’s think about it before the next pastor arrives. Tell me yours sometime and I will tell you mine. We’ll see who has the best one. Better yet, tell yours to each other. You can get some clues from Hebrews. That Bible book was addressed to a church which was about to give up because things had just gotten too hard. (Hebrews 10:23-25) Even better than that tell it to your new pastor when you share with him your excitement at his coming and your plans for “stirring one another up to love and good works.” Also tell him that you plan to be faithful to meet together. I will give you a clue, however, as to my answer. The church universal is eternal. Individual churches, on the other hand, do die. Like all living things they die when they no longer have a purpose for living - when they no longer have a mission. All living things go through times when they thrive and times when their life needs to be renewed. They need to recover their “mission.” We have one thing left to do before the pastor comes - get clear about our mission and renew our commitment to it. To this end, I am asking for our church to begin praying and thinking about the mission of Knightdale Baptist Church. I am also calling upon the leadership of this congregation to set aside a Friday evening and Saturday to write a Mission Statement as soon as we can. Here’s another reason why we need to agree on where we are headed to plan how to get there. In Wonderland, Alice said to the Cheshire cat, “Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?” “That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,” said the cat. “I don’t much care where…,” said Alice. “Then it doesn’t matter which way you go,” said the cat. ― Charles Dorman Carroll, Lewis. 1865. Our Mission

“Marking time” is an expression I haven’t heard recently. The best I can recall it means standing still, doing nothing of real significance waiting for something of importance to happen. At this juncture of our wilderness journey, it feels a lot to me as though we are “marking time.” So I began to reflect on the times we have been through together up to this point and came up with a couple of things (short-time memories at that). One was a conversation with my son who is in his 50’s, lives alone with two cats in Georgia. I told him that I was working with a congregation which was experiencing serious decline. Nominating Committee Update

Our individual responsibility in the church could be compared to a clock: In order for a clock to keep good time each part must do its work and do it well. If one part stops working, then it will stop working. Each of us needs to do our part/work and we must do it well. And finally the Bible states how one day we will give account of how we used our talents and abilities in fulfilling our personal responsibilities in Church. Romans 14:12 it states “Each of us will give account of himself to God…” Listed are the committees and their responsibilities; if you feel your talents meet the needs of a committee then inform a member of the Nominating Committee of your

What are “Your Talents & Abilities?”

It is that time of the year where the Nominating Committee will be looking for volunteers to fill the church’s leadership positions, including persons willing to serve as a deacon. We would like for you to reflect on your personal talents and abilities and help us fill the positions within our church by volunteering to serve. The Lord has not given us all the same talents and abilities, but He has given us all talents and abilities. And Jesus says that talents were given “to each according to his own abilities”. (Matthew 25:14-15). Some may have more talents than others, but we must use each talent to serve Christ.

choice. Also, sometimes we need someone else to point out our gifts to us. So, if you know of someone who may fit a particular role please recommend them to the committee. Be in prayer, our goal is to have everyone in place by the first of August. ―Susan Sauls & Committee
