Hopefully, as you age and gain more experience, you realize the folly of that outlook and grow out of it. If not, life continues to be painfully difficult, as it rarely does acquiesce to your desires. It was during those angsty, woe-is-me teenage years that I discovered a grand realization. I can still remember exactly how it happened. Lying in bed one night, waiting to drift off to sleep, fuming among the raging hormones of being a teenager, I started thinking about all I had. I remember thinking, here I am, feeling sorry for myself, moping and complaining that things haven’t gone my way, and yet, I’m about to fall asleep in my own room in a warm home with a full stomach. Life actually isn’t that bad. In fact, it’s actually pretty good. It was a simple statement, really, but one with a continuous impact on how I attempt to view the world. Granted, over the years, I have not come close to perfecting it, as there are still those momentary lapses into self-pity city. Let’s be honest. Everyone has them. Likely, you have, too, maybe even recently. I remember that realization because it created a dramatic shift in my outlook, from a focus on lack to focusing on abundance. I had a home, bed, clothes, food, parents who cared about me, and there were plenty of others who couldn’t say they had even one of those. My mind thought of all those people out there in the world who didn’t have those things I had been so generously blessed to receive. In that moment, and from that point on, I decided to change my approach. Whenever I started feeling down or sorry for myself, think about how much I have. In church life, we call counting your blessings, perhaps naming them one by one. *Cue song here I share this because it remains a poignant lesson, not just navigating the teen years, but throughout life. When you really focus on abundance, all that you have been given, you can’t help but be thankful. Sure, someone will always have more, better, or newer, but that misses the point. When you shift your focus to a theology of abundance, you cultivate a heart of gratitude. You learn a deeper appreciation for all things, seeing them as they truly are, gifts from a loving God. Then, you can’t help but give thanks with a grateful heart. *Cue song here — Trent Sessoms Volume 12, Issue11

Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

- Ephesians 5:20 Every person goes through the angst-ridden adolescent years. Some might seem to never grow out of it. Please note: If for some reason you are not available to help on the day that you volunteered to work, we ask that you please don’t forget to find a replacement for yourself so there is adequate coverage during the worship service. Also, if you have a change in the schedule for the children’s nursery or children’s church, please contact the monthly coordinator so that the change can be made prior to the printing of the worship bulletin. However, any permanent changes in the schedule should continue to be handled by the lead coordinator.

Thank you for all your help
