I didn’t realize I could love something so much. That sensation brings me back around to the notion we find represented in scripture. Never before could I fathom the capacity for love I feel until seeing it smiling, crying, laughing, drooling, and learning to move about all over the living room floor. As I reflect on the experience, this must be a sample of the way God must feel for His own creation. In a season marked by celebrating love, I think about the love I have felt firsthand in my life. Love from my wife, my family, my friends, and the churches I’ve been fortunate to have served over the past 13 years. Most of all, I’m thankful for the love of God, given that all of those relationships are possible because we stem from a loving Creator who first saw fit to share His own love with us. Because of that love, we have the capacity to love one another. It is that love that continues to astound, amaze, and captivate, love that surpasses all understanding (Ephesians 3:19) so much that we still write, sing, think, and celebrate it. The depths of love we experience are part of the grand mystery of our existence because throughout life we continue to learn more about the levels to which we can receive and distribute love. And that all comes back to one simple statement: we love because he first loved us. This time of the year, when you think about those in your own life who have brought such an immense joy through your loving relationships, may it be a reminder to give thanks to the one who instilled something of his own nature within us, the ability to love and be loved. May you know that you are loved by Him whose love is beyond our comprehension. INSIDE This Issue

Beyond Our Comprehension

We love because he first loved us. 1 John 4:19

It’s like your heart takes form outside of your body and is walking around. That was a description shared with me of what it’s like to have a baby. (Thanks for that, Brandon.) In sharing the joys of anticipating and experiencing the arrival of a new addition to the family, this comment struck me as one that truly summarizes the emotion attached to having a child. It really is like my heart is walking, or in my household, army crawling, all around the room. When I got married, it felt like my heart had grown more than I could ever expect to make room for someone else. That feeling magnified at the birth of my own son. Happy Valentine’s Day.
