OPENING PLENARY—“LAW ENFORCEMENT EMOTIONAL SURVIVAL: STAYING BITTER OR GETTING BETTER”
8:45 am to 10:00 am | Salon A-C
This is a motivational “life-balancing” presentation based on real-life concepts. It offers practical solutions for increased and continued motivation and stress management. It will provide the audience with the knowledge and personal skills necessary to continue to perform productively, effectively, and ethically. State-of-the-art, up-to-date information concerning trauma, ethical leadership, coping with change and adversity, and positive motivation in today’s law enforcement workplace is presented. Included is information regarding the (1) nature and uniqueness of stress in the law enforcement profession; (2) the importance of attitude; (3) concepts regarding integrity and ethical behavior; (4) dealing with demands and deadlines; and (5) the eight keys to stress-free living, motivation, and success in your profession. Simple concepts and reminders will turn your job from a pension into a passion. It is time to get better, not bitter.

MENTORING: INSTILLING RESPONSIBILITY & ACCOUNTABILITY
1:30 pm to 3:00 pm | Garden Pavilion
Mentor refers to one who imparts wisdom to and shares knowledge with a less experienced colleague. It is not a new phenomenon. The concept originated in ancient Greece when Homer’s Mentor advised Odysseus and thus lent his name to this very human activity. Mentor-ing is a method of capitalizing on the vast knowledge and experience that veterans can pass down. Organiza-tions are only as good as their employees, and good employees can greatly influence others. Mentoring is essential in that much of the information necessary to do the job well is experiential, and therefore not sub-ject to classroom learning. Many organizations have not established a mentoring system to develop their most promising talent. Understand “formal” versus “informal” mentoring; learn 15 characteristics of successful men-tors; and know 10 tips for improving mentoring. This presentation is easy to understand and brimming with practical advice.
Speaker: Dr. James T. Reese, FAAETS, D.P.C.P.
INTERACTIVE PANEL DISCUSSION: BUILDING THE VALUE OF THE ORGANIZATION
3:30 pm to 5:00 pm | Salon D-E
Police employees are a fundamental part to building the value of the organization. Typically the structure of law enforcement is a vertical organizational structure which designates a formal reporting relationship (chain of command). The chain of command can sometimes hinder police employees’ abilities to add value to an organization by dissuading employees’ innovative ideas and suggestions.
How do law enforcement agencies overcome the bureau-cratic limitations of a formal chain of command to help their employees build the value of the organization? At-tend this panel presentation and find out!
Speakers: Chief Eve Irvine, Manhattan Beach PD
Chief Ken James, Emeryville PD
Sheriff Sandra Hutchens, Orange County Sheriff’s Department
Moderator: Chief Jackie Gomez-Whitely, Cypress PD
CRUCIAL CONVERSATIONS: HOW TO SUCCEED IN THOSE TOUGH CONVERSATIONS
3:30 pm to 5:00 pm | Garden Pavilion
Have you ever lost your temper and wish you hadn’t? Ever kept your mouth shut when you knew you should have spoken out? Here is a workshop that will help you gain control, confidence and credibility when the stakes are high, opinions vary and emotions run strong. The workshop will inform you why we get stuck and give you an opportunity to try some guaranteed new skills that will keep you in dialogue in your professional and personal relationships. The workshop will cover the fol-lowing topics:
• Why men and women respond differently

WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY?
10:30 am to 12 Noon | Garden Pavilion
“What Did You Just Say? A Real World Guide to Organi-zational Communication” is the one of the most popular conference workshops offered by “Winning Mind Semi-nars.” Taught by Betsy Brantner Smith, this presenta-tion offers a unique mix of motivation, leadership, body language awareness and real world communication skills, designed to enhance your organization’s ability to “accomplish the mission,” both on the street and in the station.
The fast-paced, multimedia format immediately gets students’ attention and keeps them engaged while providing tips, tactics and information that anyone can easily adapt for their own use long after the seminar has concluded. The principles explored in this workshop are a realistic and dynamic look at incorporating effective communication skills into all aspects of law enforce-ment, from dispatch to supervision, from patrol work to investigations. This presentation will go far beyond the usual in-service training and teach everyone to really communicate!
Speaker: Betsy Brantner-Smith, Retired Sergeant/Lecturer
CLOSING PLENARY—FIRST, BE STRONG ON YOUR OWN (SO WE CAN BE STRONG TOGETHER)
12:45 pm to 2:30 pm | Salon A-C
It’s much easier to talk leadership than it is to live it. That’s why we’ve all known some people who read about, study about and talk about leadership, but who practice lazyship, losership and loonyship. If we want to be strong together, we need to be individually strong. This session will give you some easily applied ideas for strengthening your influence, your reputation and your leadership role. Some of them you can begin right in the meeting room!
Speaker: Tina Lewis-Rowe, Retired Law Enforcement/Lecturer
