The Sunday of the Passion

March 20, 2016 The Triumphal Entry: Mark 11:1–10

Now when they drew near to Jerusalem, to Bethphage and Bethany, at the Mount of

Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples and said to them, “Go into the village in front of

you, and immediately as you enter it you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever

sat. Untie it and bring it. If anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord

has need of it and will send it back here immediately.’” And they went away and found a

colt tied at a door outside in the street, and they untied it. And some of those standing

there said to them, “What are you doing, untying the colt?” And they told them what

Jesus had said, and they let them go. And they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their

cloaks on it, and he sat on it. And many spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread

leafy branches that they had cut from the fields. And those who went before and those

who followed were shouting, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the

Lord! Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David! Hosanna in the highest!”

Invocation P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C Amen.

Exhortation P Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto

God our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us

forgiveness.

P Our help is in the name of the Lord,

C who made heaven and earth. P I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord,

C and You forgave the iniquity of my sin.

Silence for reflection on God's Word and for self-examination.

Confession of Sins P O almighty God, merciful Father,

C I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with

which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal

punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and

I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent,

bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and

merciful to me, a poor, sinful being.

Forgiveness of our Sin (Absolution) P Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant

of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the

command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the

Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C Amen.

[10:30] Sunday School Children's Anthem: “Crown Him With Many Crowns”

Salutation and Collect of the Day P The Lord be with you.

C And with thy spirit.

P Let us pray.

Almighty and everlasting God, You sent Your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ, to take

upon Himself our flesh and to suffer death upon the cross. Mercifully grant that we

may follow the example of His great humility and patience and be made partakers of

His resurrection; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with

You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C Amen.

Old Testament Reading: Deuteronomy 32:36–39 The LORD will vindicate his people

and have compassion on his servants,

when he sees that their power is gone

and there is none remaining, bond or free.

Then he will say, “Where are their gods,

the rock in which they took refuge,

who ate the fat of their sacrifices

and drank the wine of their drink offering?

Let them rise up and help you;

let them be your protection!”

“See now that I, even I, am he,

and there is no god beside me;

I kill and I make alive;

I wound and I heal;

and there is none that can deliver out of my hand.”

A This is the Word of the Lord.

C Thanks be to God.

Second Reading: Philippians 2:5–11 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was

in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but made

himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And

being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of

death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him

the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,

in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is

Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

A This is the Word of the Lord.

C Thanks be to God.

Anthem: "Crown Him with Many Crowns" Adult Bells

Holy Gospel: Matthew 21:10–17 P The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the twenty-first chapter.

C Glory be to Thee, O Lord.

And when he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred up, saying, “Who is this?”

And the crowds said, “This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee.”

And Jesus entered the temple and drove out all who sold and bought in the temple, and

he overturned the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those who sold pigeons.

He said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer,’ but you

make it a den of robbers.”

And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple, and he healed them. But when

the chief priests and the scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children

crying out in the temple, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” they were indignant, and they

said to him, “Do you hear what these are saying?” And Jesus said to them, “Yes; have

you never read,

“‘Out of the mouth of infants and nursing babies

you have prepared praise’?”

And leaving them, he went out of the city to Bethany and lodged there.

P This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C Praise be to Thee, O Christ.

Confession of Faith (Creed of Nicea) C I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all

things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His

Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God,

begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things

were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and

was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and

was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And

the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into

heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with

glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from

the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped

and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian

and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and

I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life T of the world to come.

Amen.

Hymn of the Day: “Prepare the Royal Highway” LSB 343 1 Prepare the royal highway;

For He fulfills God’s Word!

2 God’s people, see Him coming:

Your own eternal king!

Palm branches strew before Him!

Your king, yet ev’ry nation

Its tribute too should bring.

All nations, now adore Him! Refrain

4 His is no earthly kingdom;

It comes from heav’n above.

His rule is peace and freedom

And justice, truth, and love.

Prayer of the Church

Preface

Proper Preface P It is truly meet, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give

thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our

Lord, who accomplished the salvation of mankind by the tree of the cross that, where

death arose, there life also might rise again and that the serpent who overcame by the

tree of the garden might likewise by the tree of the cross be overcome. Therefore

with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify

Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying:

Holy, Holy, Holy (Sanctus)

Lord's Prayer

P Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will

be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us

our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into

temptation, but deliver us from evil.

The Words of Our Lord P Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He

had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is

My T body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.”

P In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks,

He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in

My T blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as

you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

“My Song Is Love Unknown” LSB 430 1 My song is love unknown,

My Savior’s love to me,

Love to the loveless shown

That they might lovely be.

Oh, who am I

That for my sake

My Lord should take

Frail flesh and die?

2 He came from His blest throne

Salvation to bestow;

But men made strange, and none

The longed-for Christ would know.

But, oh, my friend,

My friend indeed,

Who at my need

His life did spend!

3 Sometimes they strew His way

And His sweet praises sing;

Resounding all the day

Hosannas to their King.

Then “Crucify!”

Is all their breath,

And for His death

They thirst and cry.

4 Why, what hath my Lord done?

What makes this rage and spite?

He made the lame to run,

He gave the blind their sight.

Sweet injuries!

Yet they at these

Themselves displease

And ’gainst Him rise.

5 They rise and needs will have

My dear Lord made away;

A murderer they save,

The Prince of Life they slay.

Yet cheerful He

To suff’ring goes

That He His foes

From thence might free.

6 In life no house, no home

My Lord on earth might have;

In death no friendly tomb

But what a stranger gave.

What may I say?

Heav’n was His home

But mine the tomb

Wherein He lay.

7 Here might I stay and sing,

No story so divine!

Never was love, dear King,

Never was grief like Thine.

This is my friend,

In whose sweet praise

I all my days

Could gladly spend!

“Christ Is the World's Redeemer” LSB 539 1 Christ is the world’s Redeemer,

The lover of the pure,

The font of heav’nly wisdom,

Our trust and hope secure,

The armor of His soldiers,

The Lord of earth and sky,

Our health while we are living,

Our life when we shall die.

2 Christ has our host surrounded

With clouds of martyrs bright,

Who wave their palms in triumph

And fire us for the fight.

Then Christ the cross ascended

To save a world undone

And, suff’ring for the sinful,

Our full redemption won.

3 Down through the realm of darkness

He strode in victory,

And at the hour appointed

He rose triumphantly.

And now, to heav’n ascended,

He sits upon the throne

Whence He had ne’er departed,

His Father’s and His own.

4 Glory to God the Father,

The unbegotten One,

All honor be to Jesus,
