InvocationP In the name of the Father and of the a Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen.

Confession and ForgivenessP If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in

us.C But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive

our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

(Silence for reflection on God’s Word and for self-examination.)

P Let us then confess our sins to God our Father.C Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and

unclean. We have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, bywhat we have done and by what we have left undone. We have notloved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors asourselves. We justly deserve your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive

3

us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will andwalk in your ways to the glory of your holy name. Amen.

P In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for his sake God forgives us all our sins. To those who believe in Jesus Christ he gives the power to become the children of God and bestows on them the Holy Spirit. May the Lord, who has begun this good work in us, bring it to completion in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.

C Amen. The Kyrie

C Amen.

THE SCRIPTURE READINGS

First Lesson Isaiah 35:4-7aSay to those with fearful hearts, "Be strong, do not fear; your God will come,he will come with vengeance; with divine retribution he will come to saveyou." [5] Then will the eyes of the blind be opened and the ears of the deafunstopped. [6] Then will the lame leap like a deer, and the mute tongueshout for joy. Water will gush forth in the wilderness and streams in thedesert. [7] The burning sand will become a pool, the thirsty ground bubblingsprings.

L This is the Word of the Lord.

C Thanks be to God.

The Psalmody (Sung by all) Psalm 146

Praise 1 | the LORD!*Praise the LORD, | O my soul!

I will praise the LORD as long 2 | as I live;*I will sing praises to my God while I have my | being.

Put not your trust in 3 | princes,*in a son of man, in whom there is no sal- | vation.

When his breath departs he returns 4 | to the earth;*on that very day his plans | perish.

Blessèd is he whose help is the God of 5 | Jacob,*whose hope is in the | LORD his God,

7

who made heaven and earth,6

the sea, and all that is | in them,*who keeps faith for- | ever;

who executes justice for 7 | the oppressed,*who gives food to the | hungry.The LORD sets the prisoners free;

the LORD opens the eyes 8 | of the blind.*The LORD lifts up those who are bowed down;the LORD loves the | righteous.

The LORD watches over the sojourners;9

he upholds the widow and the | fatherless,*but the way of the wicked he brings to | ruin.

The LORD will reign for- 10 | ever,*your God, O Zion, to all generations. |Praise the LORD!Glory be to the Father and | to the Son*and to the Holy | Spirit;as it was in the be- | ginning,*is now, and will be forever. | Amen.

Second Lesson James 2:1-10, 14-18 My brothers, as believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ, don't showfavoritism. [2] Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ringand fine clothes, and a poor man in shabby clothes also comes in. [3] If youshow special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, "Here's agood seat for you," but say to the poor man, "You stand there" or "Sit on thefloor by my feet," [4] have you not discriminated among yourselves andbecome judges with evil thoughts? [5] Listen, my dear brothers: Has notGod chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faithand to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him? [6] But youhave insulted the poor. Is it not the rich who are exploiting you? Are theynot the ones who are dragging you into court? [7] Are they not the ones whoare slandering the noble name of him to whom you belong? [8] If you reallykeep the royal law found in Scripture, "Love your neighbor as yourself," youare doing right. [9] But if you show favoritism, you sin and are convicted by

8

the law as lawbreakers. [10] For whoever keeps the whole law and yetstumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it. [14] What good is it,my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faithsave him? [15] Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food.[16] If one of you says to him, "Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed,"but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? [17] In the sameway, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. [18] Butsomeone will say, "You have faith; I have deeds." Show me your faithwithout deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do.

L This is the Word of the Lord.

C Thanks be to God. The Verse

P The Holy Gospel is written...

Holy Gospel Mark 7:24-37Jesus left that place and went to the vicinity of Tyre. He entered a house anddid not want anyone to know it; yet he could not keep his presence secret.[25] In fact, as soon as she heard about him, a woman whose little daughterwas possessed by an impure spirit came and fell at his feet. [26] The womanwas a Greek, born in Syrian Phoenicia. She begged Jesus to drive the demonout of her daughter. [27] “First let the children eat all they want,” he toldher, “for it is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.”

9

[28] “Lord,” she replied, “even the dogs under the table eat the children’scrumbs.” [29] Then he told her, “For such a reply, you may go; the demonhas left your daughter.” [30] She went home and found her child lying on thebed, and the demon gone. [31] Then Jesus left the vicinity of Tyre and wentthrough Sidon, down to the Sea of Galilee and into the region of theDecapolis. [32] There some people brought to him a man who was deaf andcould hardly talk, and they begged him to place his hand on the man. [33]After he took him aside, away from the crowd, Jesus put his fingers into theman's ears. Then he spit and touched the man's tongue. [34] He looked upto heaven and with a deep sigh said to him, "Ephphatha!" (which means, "Beopened!"). [35] At this, the man's ears were opened, his tongue was loosenedand he began to speak plainly. [36] Jesus commanded them not to tellanyone. But the more he did so, the more they kept talking about it. [37]People were overwhelmed with amazement. "He has done everything well,"they said. "He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak."

Starting Sunday, September 12, we will start a new Adult Sunday School series. We will return to

the subject of the Trinity, and do a deep dive on this important doctrine of Christianity. Where is

the Trinity in the Bible? Does the doctrine of the Trinity imply that there are really three gods and

not just one God? Or is it that God plays several roles and switches between those roles? Is the

doctrine of the Trinity something that was added later by certain councils and not part of the

"original Christianity"? Join us as we deep dive the doctrine of the Trinity and learn how this

doctrine is critical to a proper understanding of true Christianity. This interactive discussion should

be appropriate both for those new to this doctrine and for those who are well-versed and want to

dive more deeply into this doctrine. This new Adult Bible series will last six weeks and will be

facilitated by Jason Tolbert in-person in Klein Hall at 9:50 AM.

We have returned to using lay crucifers at both in-person worship services. All lay people (men and

women) middle-school age and older are welcome to serve as crucifers. This is an especially

important and wonderful way for our youth to serve God and participate in the worship service in

a formal capacity. All crucifers must complete a short training prior to serving - to volunteer/schedule

your training session, please contact Pastor Lissy.

Donations to Living Savior Lutheran Church to continue our ministry are always welcome. If you are

attending today’s service in person, place your offering in the offering plate near the exit from the

Sanctuary. We also accept online contributions which you can access through our website

(www.livingsaviorlutheran.org) and going to the “Contribute Online Here” link at the bottom of our

home page.
