Independence Day lessons for church life • Return to the basics — On July 4 we commemorate the origins of our country. In terms of faith, we also periodically need to hear again the foundational stories of Creation, the Israelites and, of course, Jesus. • Honor the gift of freedom — “For freedom Christ has set us free … do not submit again to a yoke of slavery” (Galatians 5:1, ESV). We strive as citizens to preserve and live out our national freedom. Likewise, as citizens of God’s kingdom we live gladly in the freedom of salvation and share that gift with others. • Enjoy community — July 4 is known for picnics, parades and other community gatherings. Similarly, the church is nourished by coming together for worship, meals and other special events. • Be light in the darkness — As fireworks brighten the sky with light and color, the church is called to display the Gospel’s unique light in a dark world. Our word dynamite and the Greek word for power — as in, “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you” (Acts 1:8) — share a root. Through God’s power in us, we share Jesus — dynamically! — with others. —Heidi Mann

STAR-SPANGLED THANKS

The Men’s Group and M.O.S.T. (Military Overseas Support Team) are off to a star-spangled start this year thanks to the help and participation of congregation members. About two weeks ago, we shipped the July 4th Shipment which should already have arrived in Guam, South Korea, Germany and a Navy Aircraft Carrier off the coast of Japan - - all the places our service members are stationed. Thank you so much for your generous contributions of supplies and empty aluminum cans. We recently took a load of aluminum to the recycling center and were reimbursed $60.00. We are making money for M.O.S.T and we are keeping the community beautiful and the environment healthy. How good is that!!! We are now working toward the Labor Day, Halloween and Thanksgiving/Christmas shipments and are making plans for a church-wide event sometime in late October or early November perhaps close to Veterans Day. Thank you again for your support of our servicemen and servicewomen so far from home!!! If you want any information about the Men’s Group or M.O.S.T., please contact either Brad Heine (954- 253-7584), Bill May (954-261-7810) or Karen Walbridge (954-917-4896).

The Lay Ministry has been working on how to adjust the service times to help our ministry here at Our Savior. This process has been going on for several years with congregational surveys, cottage meetings, and focus groups. We believe the changes to our services is in the best interest of Our Savior going forward. The changes are meant to keep what our members like the most about attending Our Savior. This proposal will be presented at the annual congregational voters meeting for approval. Here is a summary of the changes.

The early service will be at 8:15 am and will consist of traditional liturgy and music.

The 9:30 am time slot will be opened up for more gatherings, breakfasts and educational opportunities for all ages, such as Sunday School and Bible classes.

The late service will be taking what is enjoyed the most about the Shout for Joy service, contemporary music, and moving it to 10:45 am and bring the 9:30 and 11:00 am participants into fellowship with one another on Sunday mornings.

There will be a separate children’s activity during the 10:45am service

The voters meeting is on July 15th and upon approval the changes will be effective on July 29th

SERVICE TIMES

Save me a pew

The world’s largest Protestant Christian congregation is Yoido Full Gospel Church in Seoul, Korea. Since its founding in 1958, the church has grown exponentially. By 1983, seven Sunday services weren’t enough to accommodate all the worshipers, so satellite churches were established. The main church, located directly across from Korea’s National Assembly, can seat 26,000. But membership is so large that people are told which week of the month they can attend worship. What an incredible witness in a country where only about 30 percent of the citizens are Christians! What would it take for our church to have a similar “problem”? And what can you do about it?

PASTOR TONY SHARES ABOUT HIS RECENT TRIP TO JAPAN………..

“Are you okay?” asks Megan, 15, the youngest of seven high school students Tony Durante is chaperoning in Japan. She notices that Durante is quiet, downcast and melancholy as he lines up the group’s suitcases in the hall of the El Inn in Kyoto in preparation for the 7,000 mile flight back to America. It is 8 a.m. June 16

th, the last day of a very successful week-long

Student Ambassador trip to Miyazu, the sister city of Delray Beach, Florida.

Sisters of Delray Beach, Inc. has biennially selected local high school students to send to Miyazu since 2001. Students Stephanie Altamirano, Ashley Backus, Joshua Bowes, Rebecca Lepp, Megan O’Connor, Neissa Philemon and Dylan Tran were chosen for the 2018 tour. In a coastal town on the Japan Sea the youth participate in home stay and the daily school life of youth like themselves for four days. The trip concludes with two days in Kyoto, Japan’s historic and cultural capital sightseeing at famous, centuries old sites. The seven students spent nine months in orientation doing fundraisers, learning about Japan and the language and about the City of Delray Beach prior to their departure on June 8

th.

Although Sister of Delray Beach, Inc. is unaffiliated with any church, its student ambassador program is a personal mission for Durante. Over the years it has allowed for students and their families of different or no faith backgrounds in the ambassador program and in Japan to develop a relationship with a Christian pastor. Durante shares his faith during his home stay with his hosts Mr. and Mrs. Okamoto, Buddhists who reside in Miyazu. He spoke at the farewell party on his group’s final evening in Miyazu and related his experience to Mark 3:31-35 when Jesus visited someone’s home and found an adoptive family in the crowd that had gathered there to hear him. Durante, motioning to all present at the party and then to Mrs. Okamoto, said how the people of Miyazu had become his brother, sister and mother during the tour.

When it was time to return to the U.S. on June 16 Durante was overcome with emotion as he realized the mission was concluding—the culmination of months of preparation, sleepless nights and day-long vigils minding the students in Japan was completed. The students had made him proud in how they applied manners that Durante had taught them in orientation, being respectful of their hosts, using Japanese phrases, politely trying exotic dishes that they were served. The success was most evident when a local asked Durante about his students. As he began to respond, Megan answered for herself in perfect Japanese! Co-chaperone Nancy King agreed with Durante that the student ambassadors represented the City of Delray Beach well among the people of Miyazu.

bringing in supplies to fill them, but we need your help.

You can drop off the Items listed below in the black bin located in the front

entrance of the church:

Paper towels/Disposable rags • Glass cleaner • Cleansing powder

• Liquid cleaner • Bleach (1‐gallon size) • Scrub brushes

• Rubber gloves • Sponge(s)

And join us on Monday, July 16, at 7:00 p.m. to help fill our Flood Buckets. We look

forward seeing you then!
