From Sep. 7 to Oct. 31, ShanghART gallery is so pleased to present Waterworks, an exhibition which brings together new works by Geng Jianyi, Wu Shanzhuan, and Yang Fudong, three of the key figures in the Yangtze River Delta art scene over the past twenty years. Drawing titular inspiration from “Tap Water Factory,” an unrealized 1987 installation by Geng Jianyi which questions premises of seeing and being seen through a maze-like configuration of walls.

Geng Jianyi’s water-related installation uses cameras to set up a curious connection between what happens inside and outside the space; Yang Fudong’s film unfolds in-side a movie-lot snowstorm with a selection of documentary material; Wu Shanzhuan presents a suite of five hundred meticulously rendered drawings, playing on his mythi-cal character of the Butterfrog. On the most basic level, each of the three suites of work maintains some connection to that most basic substance, water, and to its ma-nipulation by human structures. Follow! Follow! Follow! The exhibition Follow! Follow! Follow! with Ji Wenyu & Zhu Weibing’s recent works will be showed to public in ShanghART gallery from Sep. 6 to Oct. 8, 2011. It is prob-lem consciousness that makes Ji and Zhu’s installation to be teeming with experimen-tal spirit. It is also what makes cloth the best option for them to make a breakthrough. Soft and gentle as it is, cloth can be used to cushion sharpness and hardness, it pos-sesses more possibilities, also in this exhibition:

It is almost a mode of development. Individuals need to seek the feeling of security and belonging in groups, thus individuals follow the groups and listen to their opinions. Among the grand narrative, the individual self has become insignificant, and groups

become more powerful and invincible. They climb up and down the mountain, move

like a great flood.

The universality and everydayness of the scenes are important features of Ji Wenyu and Zhu Weibing’s work. In their work, everyday scenes such as photo taking, meet-ing, sightseeing, and watching television are considered as cases with special mean-ing, an ironic metaphor to daily reality. Ji Wenyu and Zhu Weibing’s installation work epitomizes the development of modern philosophies and cultures. It showcases the confusion and excitement, obsession and inspiration, progress and recession of peo-ple and their history

Yang Zhenzhong’s “If you disagree with “Future Festival” please raise your hand – “TOP Events” documentaries series” is a series of documentaries about all the con-temporary art activities related to “Future Festival” and “TOP Events” in Shanghai, in 2011. This project was created and displayed, simultaneously and progressively, as part of these art events.

“Future Festival” is an art activity initiated in February 2011 by a group of artists in Shanghai, that will last for one year. The topic of “Future Festival” was inspired from French poet Mallarmé who said that the role of the artist is to prepare for future projects. This quotation allude to a certain reversion in contemporary art action, suggesting that participating artists turned from the act of criticizing and making experiences to a new attitude of bidding, gathering and mingling.

During this period, discussions between local artists and a philosophy professor (Lu Xinghua), as well as interviews in artists’ studio and exhibitions will be held. This con-tinuous symposium is more than a simple combination between philosophy and art, the organizers insist on the fact that: it is neither a talk, nor an exhibition, neither an art project, nor one of those academic topics we were used to, an inertia processing in an experienced thinking. It responds to art introspection, surprises, conflicts of opinions, differences, and unknown. Everyday becomes a festival. It is actually more a final fes-tival, a kind of decisive conviction.

As a project in parallel with “Future Festival”, “TOP Events” showed this conviction, located in a building of The Outstanding Park in Shanghai, a venue for art events. From July to October, “TOP Events” will continuously present three sessions of art and cultural interdisciplinary activities including: art exhibitions, music, theater and dance performances, poetry readings, film screenings and philosophy symposiums, all initi-ated by artists, architects, poets, musicians, philosophers, etc.

During this year of “Future Festival” and four months of “TOP Events”, this documen-tary will be regularly updated, completed with real-time reports on people and activities coming and going in the building.

Ni Hao! My name is Carli. My father comes from a little village up in the Swiss mountains in the canton of Grisons. He used to herd the goats in the Mountains when he was little, now he‘s retired Engineer. My mother comes from the other side of the planet, from Tainan on the island of Taiwan. She used to buy loads of bean-ice cream when she was little, now she‘s the most patriotic Swiss person I know of. Until a couple of years ago, I didn‘t have much to do with China since I had been living all my life in Switzerland and had never visited Asia. But then, in 2007 I met a guy on facebook who told me he had been doing a lot of business in China for many years.

He looked kind of Asian so I asked him where he‘s from anf he replied that his father was a native American, a Cherokee indian. That‘s why everybody thinks he‘s from Asia, he smiled. One day, he asked me whether I would be interested to help him build a new business in China. It was going to be a social network in which the participants could teach their peers things like languages or stories about far away places. I happily agreed to help him. In this project I got to know several people from Beijing, Shanghai and other parts of China who would trans-late the website text that I wrote down in English. My Chinese back then and even today is very poor, but I‘m going to change that soon! The coworkers in China were very helpful and always very kind, and after a while we got to be good friends with eachother, speaking basic English matched up with some onli-ne-translation Chinese skills on my side :) About a year later I went to visit them in China. I had a great time with my friends in China, whom I‘ve never personally met before, but still they would do whatever they could show me around Beijing and Shanghai. With great memories about China I went back home to Switzer-land. In Switzerland I saw more and more almost constantly negative articles in the Swiss and western media about China. I was a little bit confused, since it was completely different from what I‘ve experienced with my friends in China. I thought this was not right. My friends in China and all other Chinese people sure-ly didn‘t deserve to be looked down like this. This was he moment when i decided to create a page on facebook, on which I wanted to show the people in Switzer-land what I experienced myself in China. I named the page „The China Switzer-land Connection“. To my surprise, I wasn‘t the only one such thoughts, soon the-re were dozends then hundreds and now over 2000 likeminded people on this page. Some of the fans of the facebook page suggested to do events where peo-ple of the page could meet up with each other. We have done two events so far, in Lucerne and Bern, and more of them will follows soon :) Today, together with some likeminded friends, we have founded a Swiss association called „The China Switzerland Connection“. The aim of this association is to help Chinese and Swiss people to make friends with eachother, so that they may one day experience the same happiness that I did, when I visited my friends in China.
