AFTER years of accidents and poor trafficflow, the community of Bizana is happy towelcome the town’s first traffic lights.

The Mbizana Local Municipal Manager,LuvuyoMahlaka, said that the installation ofthese traffic lights – along the busy R61 – hadbeen long overdue.Mahlaka said the reason for identifying this

route was two-pronged.“The road is very busy and it is lined with

shops, attracting a lot of traffic. We are alsoin the process of building a Driver’s LicenceCentre and we will need the use of trafficlights for driver’s tests.”The Driver’s Licence Centre is one of the

developments that would put the small town

of Bizana on the map.“Many people would benefit. Instead of

having to travel to other towns for licenc-es, they will now be tested right here intheir home town, saving them travellingcosts.”Siyanda Khuzwayo, one of the motorists

that use the Bizana road daily, said it wasabout time that the traffic lights were in-stalled.“It is difficult for traffic to flow properly,

since the road is extremely busy.“People should look out for this small town

of ours. It is going to be bigger and better withall the shops and entertainment we need, thanks to ourmunicipality,” concludedKhuz-wayo.

Sadly, in June 2006, while I was at work, someone broke into my garden cottageand Rugby Museum. Among personal be-longings, original amateur 15 man codeInternational and South African Provin-cial memorabilia, including books, lapelbadges, long sleeved match worn num-bered jerseys andmatch day programmeswere stolen. Details of stolen memorabil-ia and wants are available on request. The acquisition of the much sought af-

ter rugby memorabilia took 47 years.I appeal to anybody who gets offered

any of the stolen memorabilia to contactme without any delay. In addition to locating the stolen goods,

I’m looking for the following memorabil-ia on Transkei Rugby: Commemorativetie, lapel badge, match day programmes,

match worn numbered Transkei jerseywithout sponsor’s logo and withoutstriped sleeves and player’s tie.Furthermore, apart from former Inter-

national and South African Provincialplayers from the amateur era, I appeal toreaders who could help me to obtainmuch sought after memorabilia to con-tact me.I am supporting the following sides:

London Scottish and Villager’s RugbyClubs, Blue Bulls, British Lions, Scotlandand South Africa.I can be contacted on 0 083 689 0896. Or

SIMBONGILE MDLEDLE

MTHATA Fever reporter Simbongile Mdle-dle was among the hundreds of media at-tending Nelson Mandela’s funeral and wasin Qunu in the days before the funeral.Re-porters usually tell readers about otherpeople’s views and experiences. In this re-port Sim tells about his personal experi-enceasareporterandbeingpartof this sad, though historic, occasion.

“I really feel honoured to have been part ofSouth Africa’s history during the reign of itsbeloved leader, Tata Nelson Rholihlahla Man-dela.

Even though journalists were not allowed togo close to the grave, just covering the eventand telling the world how history was beingmade, was absolutely out of this world.

The next generation will only learn abouthim in history books whilst the present genera-

tion had the priviledge of spending time withthis international icon whilst he was stillalive.

I was only 15 years old when Mandela wasreleased from prison. As a boy from the bun-dus I would never have thought that one dayI would be part of his funeral, let alone to seehim face to face.

The first occasion was in 2003 at the Lusik-isiki College of Education where he was hand-ing out ARVs to patients with HIV/Aids.

In 2005 I saw him at the funeral of his secondoldest son, Makgatho Mandela, and 2007 atthe wedding of his grandson Mandla Mande-la.

Even though I never even shook his hand,it was just a wonderful experience seeing himin real life at not only on a television screen.

His funeral and the days preceding it were, for me, a combination of sadness, celebrationand anger. On the first announcement thatTata Mandela was no more, sadness was writ-ten on the faces of the people; sadness over the

Fever reporter:MystoryaboutMandelaloss of a dearly loved leader who changed thelives of many people in this country.

At prayer services held in Mthatha and its sur-rounds, the mourners’ faces were grief-stricken.

After the announcement Qunu was as quiet asthe grave. People just sat in front of their televi-sions trying to believe that Madiba was no more.

As the first initial days of unbelief and denialpassed and people started to accept his depar-ture, they began to celebrate his life. Duringgatherings, such as his night vigil, people startedto sing songs praising him as a hero and empha-sizing there would be no one like him.

In his hometown and Mthatha, thousands ofpeople were eagerly waiting from early in themorning for his remains to arrive at Mthathaairport.

Many people in Qunu complained of not beinggiven an opportunity to see his body, despite thefact that he was born here.

The military plane carrying the body of TataMadiba arrived at 13h30 in the company of twohelicopters. The human chain started in front of

Mthatha Airport and stretched to his home inQunu.

Mandela has been laid to rest after a longwalk to freedom. May his soul rest in peace. So-pitsho, Yemyem, Vela bembhentsele.

pho Ncelile thanked the centre for savingtheir kids from what she called “vicious actsof society”. She said the centre had helped tomould and protect their kids from brutality, rape and violence.“Andwe don’t consider them disabled. The

Pastor Mtshazi is one of thefemales who followed the call-ing of preaching the word ofGod.Shewas ordained recently at

Ibandla laseMthini Evangeli-cal Movement, in Mthatha, bythe founder of Kum Bible Col-lege Bishop Dr Joseph Kobo.“It is not easy when you are

a woman because you are un-dermined most of the time andpeople or congregations some-times don’t want to give you a

chance to show your calling. They don’t trust you and some-timestheyjudgeyoubylookingat your appearance,” she said. She added that it was not

easy for her to follow this call-ing, because she knew shewouldbe judgedand fewpeoplewould accept her. But againstthese odds, she decided to fol-low her calling. She said females who are

A MAN from Mthatha was left speechlesswhen he was announced the winner of theChevrolet bakkie, after entering a competi-tion at the Pick n Pay Supermarket.

Baby John couldn’t believe what he’d heardafter he was told that he had won.

During an exclusive interview with the Fe-ver, he could not utter even a single word. In-stead he asked his daughter, Sarah John, tospeak on his behalf. She said they were so hap-py that their father had won the bakkie in thePnP competition after submitting his detailson the back of a till slip which he put into thecompetition box.

“We are speechless. There is really nothingmore I could say,” she said.

The Assistant Store Manager of Pick n Pay,Noma Magadla, said they have drawn final-ists at the end of each month, starting at theend of March this year.

“In order to qualify to enter the competitioncustomers had to spend a minimum of R100in any of their Grahamstown, Mthatha andPort Alfred stores. It was the first time a com-petition of this nature was hosted here in Mt-hatha,” said Magadla.

She said they were happy for the John Fam-ily. “They’ve received the best Christmas giftever, from Pick n Pay.”

Sohlala sisitsho ukuba ungalikhuphaiphuthi ehlathini mara ubuhlathi soze

Uyazi guys, what we are saying is a fact, nomatter who sayswhat. If you are amoegie, you will always be like that no matter if peo-ple around you try to build you up. Even in-gagqokakahle iphathe i-style but there is thatbehaviour which shows that this mntu be-longs to the jungle and he or she does not de-serve to be in town if not township fellows.Futhi xa ungalazi ukuba lihlathi kuthathaixesha ukulibona. Ingakumbi xa kukhonaoomangane or well presentable peoplebuyavela ubuhlathi. Ubokuze uwaqaphele keayathanda ukuzibeka phambili kanti akazinex. Recently singama-outie we drove our ve-hicles to one of the expensive restaurants inUTA to spoil our girls because they don’t visitthese shebeen areas. Ukuba beningazi kenathi sikulo eli qela lizi-victims in thisworld. But uku-spoiler umntu akusosono neh?Kwakukudala ke uGesh wayemana esithi leoutie ilihlathi nokuba ingagcoka kahle, maraathi ama-outie hai Gesh ubona kabi. Ok, safi-ka e-restaurant sathi abantwana mababize.Yes, within no time the table was full of deli-cious food, drinks and every ncam-gce owakewakhona la emhlabeni, phela besis’tanile. Sa-betha and all that was accompanied by sweetconversations. Nantso le outie iyaphuma, wethought iyobhema. After ten minutes iya-buya i-outie iphethe i-litre yeBanana Ma-hewu ijoyina ngayo la kwi-table, ithi yona ay-ilungi kwezi-drinks. HOO! Shame bonke ba-jonge kuGesh bekhumbula into owayeyishiloukuba lihlathi eli. Ucinge ke besiphethe ii-imports fromEngland to test out iUTAukuthihow farwith the 2010 preparations, maranowle outie nantso isishaya ngamarhewu e-Wimpy. WHOO! Hai shame kusekude eng-qinibeni ngomlomo. Perhaps abantu bakhebayomphucula. Akukho nto i-wrong ngamar-hewu akho as proudly South African productmara mfanakithi akangeni e-Wimpy phoffnakweyiphi i-restaurant ekwela nqanaba.Uvile neh?

To jump a certain stage in your life is dan-gerousIf someone jumped one of the stages in life

at the end he or she becomes a joke. Every

thing he or she is doing it’s like he or sheis a “half done” (incomplete person) especial-ly wrong ones. If uyaphuza kunobaxo, uyat-handana kunobaxo uyabanjwa boomanganekunobaxo and whatever he or she is doing. We don’t know whether you use to noticewhat we are talking about, if not, afteryou’ve finished reading this paragraph startto verify ifwhatwe said is true ornot.Anoth-er thing which results in such behaviour isgrowing up being spoiled. Apho ukhula un-gayazi into e-wrong ne-right, so ubhidekewakubamdala kuba zininzi izinto ezi-wrongand they need you to pull yourself out ofthem. If you didn’t get that education of com-manding yourself, you are a joke in life. Andno one is going to feel sympathy for you ifyou ruin yourself. Angani imfundiso iqalaekhaya. Actually, dear readers, we are refer-ring to a guy who we met at KwaNongolozarecently. If you don’t knowwhereNongolozais, keep on watching this space - we will tellyou as time goes by. Eintleik yindawoyobumnandi. Da man was in a company ofthree girls, but we don’t think all of themwere his girlfriends. He was buying liquorlike nobody’s business. Amanye ama-cher-rie ubusowubona ukuba aphuza kuba nantsiintaka ibhabhela kufutshane koko ngen-gasaseli because bekucaca ukuba khangekulalwe kwangezolo. Phela angani umfethuebesamkela nge 25. Ebethenga obunyebusekhona obunye emotweni. Athenge i-20ye-cigarettes enye esayiphethe ngesandla.KWAKHUU! Madoda into kanantsi. Thinasohlamba ezantsi kwakho nje ngokuba uh-lamba ngasentla nje wena. Uzothula nje um-gosi kuba kudala kuthiwa uthanda iindabazabantu. Seno-commenter ke xa nithandangalomhlekazi. Nokuba nincokola nobabinixa nigqiba ukufunda lo mgosi.

Doyouknowwhat they sayabout you la-dies?HEY! Girls amajimbos akhala engashayi-

we la phandle si-style senu, but ke what youcan do because is the way eniphanta ngayoand anifaki sandla pokwethweni yamntuand anibizi mntu nguye ovele eze kuwe adi-like qha. So, uzothi ke wena awufuni? Unot-she is’bunu selawu, ungagxothwa kwakok-wenu, uyeke intaka indizela kufutshanenawe. Niyafuna sinixele ukuba bathini?Yithani “EWE” kaloku kungenjalo songat-sho thina singanyanzelekanganje………….Ok, bathi bayaphela ngama-cherrie ongenokwazi ukuwa-“visitor”ngaphandle kokuba uphethe something toeat if not to drink. Bathi this is not only yourparcels they are supposed to carry as theyare also compelled ukuthi baphathele nee-tshomie zenu kuba nifike nibabuze ukubabacinga ukuba ii-tshomie zizothini zona. In-jalo? If is like that bakhipheni ootshomie ababazipantele nabo, kutheni nje bona besolokobefuna ukudla emdudwini iintaka zingakaapha phandle? Nyhani baxeleleni kungenja-lo lamadoda athi azaku-stoper ukuni-visitorkwezi-tertiary institutions. They don’t havea problem to spoil their partners, but whenit comes to friends it’s too much. That’s whywhen we drive our turu-turu in the streetsof UTAonweekends, we always see one driv-er in the company of more than six girls inone car. Nazi ke nani xa nimbona ukuba lomfo usengxakini kuba aba bantu ba-zokondliwa nguye bonke and they drink dif-ferent types of ciders. Akumnandanga kekwi-outie mara ifakwe ngu-girlfriend ngent-loko. SIMBONGILE MDLEDLE

THIS week, our Legends’ corner shines thespotlight on a formerTranskei soccer great, who was the Achillesheel of his opponents.

Mhlekazi “Gindla”Mkatini grew up in theNgangelizwe Townshipin Mthatha and thename Gindla was givento him by his friend,Monwabisi Jojo. His family later

moved from Ngange-lizwe to Eagle Street intown.Gindla started play-

ing football at the age ofeight, playing for ateamcalledCovers. Lat-er he played for CityBirds and after that forthe Thembu Royals. The Thembu Royals’

scouts saw Gindla’s im-mense soccer-playingpotential while he was stil a pupil at Ngange-lizwe High.

He played alongside prominent players oftheday, likeZola ‘Wajima’DunywaandLevy‘Membra’ Tom. “Those guys had a great in-

fluence on my footballcareer, because theymotivated me.”Gindla regards

Fisher Galo as a per-son who assisted himto grow in his footballcareer.“I was never on the

bench. I was always inthe starting line-upandFisheralwaysmo-tivated me to keep mygame up.”For Thembu, Gind-

lawas a deadly strikerwho always torment-ed the defence. In 1976 he moved to

St John’s College, stillplaying for the Them-bu Royals.Themost successful

year for Mkatini was1977 when he becameThembu Royals’ Foot-

baller of the Year. In 1981 he left Thembu tojoin Bush Bucks. Bush Bucks had top strik-

ers like Tsidiso Letlaka and Cooper Didishe,so the coach groomed Gindla to become a de-fender, playing alongside Lloyd Mahlangu.Among other soccer greats Gindla played

with at Bush Bucks were Richard Herman,Kena Phosa and Barracks Ncandane. He cap-tained Bush Bucks for four years. He saidthere was a time when they were collectingeach and every point in their matches in theTranskei and winning all the cups.“Wewere punishing our opponents by scor-

ing up to 25 goals in a single match. We werereally a strong team.”His highlight-match was playing for Them-

bu Royals against Bush Bucks at SecludoPark in the Castle Shield Knockout Final.“Theywere leading by 4-1, but we equalized

and the gameended 4-4.Wewent to extra time, but there were no goals, so we went onto thepenalty stage and we eventually won thegame. In that game I scored two goals.”He revealed that no defender had given him

sleepless nights while he was still a striker.“But when I played defender, the late EvansScheepers gave me a hard time.”Due to injuries, Gindla was forced to retire

from football and he subsequently changedhis focus to education. After his illustrious football career, he ob-

tained two national diplomas. He worked atMr Bread, Cash Pay Master Services and iscurrently working at the OR Tambo DistrictMunicipality as an Acting Director in Rural,Economic Development and Planning.Gindla is a family man who stays with his

mother and children. He urged young sport stars to arm them-

selves with a good education. “A career insport could be short-lived and therefor a goodeducation is paramount. Youngsters shouldalso make sure they stay fit and stay awayfrom drugs.”
